Sand Blind

Published on Sep 22, 2019 davidryle

"5U Large Format Modular Synthesizer. This self-playing piece is structured around a simple sequence from the synthesizers.com Q960 step sequencer.
It is generating a seven step "circle of fifths".
There are three VCO's - Synthetic Sound Labs Double-DekaUltrasonic VCO, an SSL VCO through a 5-Pulser and a trio of Mos Lab 901's and 904-B filter.
The DDVCO is tuned to the low root, the Mos Lab's are tuned to a ninth above and the SSL is a fifth above that. The mix from a STG Soundlabs mixer is then run to an Empress reverb in modulation mode and a TC Electronic tape delay DSP from the D-Two rack delay.
A secondary voice from the Sputnik West Coast Random Source module to a FSFX Braids in Harmonic mode is the detuned sliding discordant background melody. It has a slew integrator FM modulation to give it the slowly bending pitch effect. Timbre and Color are modulated from the WCRS as well. It is further flanged by an SSL Digital Delay.
Several filters (dotcom Q107, STG Sea Devils, Yusynth Arp 4072 and a Mega Ohm Audio CdS) are being pinged by various envelopes - some looping. They are STG Soundlabs EG, Q109's and Oakley Sound Labs VCADSR (Krisp1 build).
A pair of STG Voltage Mini Stores are producing a rapid loop step sequence to a pair of Q106's which come and go in the background.
There are a couple of noise pads in the background. One is from a pink noise to an Oakley VCSVF in band pass which is modulated from the WCRS and an LFO then on to a Strymon Blue Sky pedal. The other is a quick fluttering high white noise sound through an Encore frequency shifter (which is pitch modulated from a Q960 sequencer) and then sent to a Jurgen Haible Tau "Pipe" Phaser.
Further gate and LFO timing is handled with the Moon Modular M563 Trigger Sequencer, the SSL V-Gates, a pair of Q962 Sequential Switches and Q961 Interfaces.
Other modular delays involved are the Modcan 73B Dual Delay and a custom Behringer DD400 digital delay."

MU - Dark Dream

Published on Aug 17, 2019 Precarious333 Music

"Stressful dream. Dark presence. Infinite dimly lit corridors. What does it mean?

Recorded as 4 tracks into Ableton Live 8. EQ, compression, panning and effects added in post.

Patch Notes:

BASS - Q106A saw wave and Corsynth C104 soft clipped saw sequenced by SymplSEQ 1 into Q105 low pass modulated by C106 channel B and AD ENV. C104 starts out static with no CV to pitch until 45 seconds in.

CHIME - Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Magnus controlled by a second SymplSEQ.

MELODIC - Noise Engineering Ataraxic Iteritas Magnus through Q107A low pass filer modulated by AD ENV. Also sequenced by the second SymplSEQ. I love the Noise on this module. Not standard noise but adds instability to the pitch. It's a really nice effect.

GATED - Same Noise Engineering Ataraxic Iteritas Magnus but through Q107A high pass filer into Oakley Deep Equinox modulated by C106 A-B Out then VCA gated 16th notes.

The MELODIC and GATED components coming from the same source and running through the same multimode filter are balanced by the filter frequency knob with GATED high pass fading at high frequency settings and MELODIC fading as the low pass filter closes.

TIMING - MIDI to clock pulse supplied by Buchla 225e syncing Oakley LFO multed to SymplSEQ 1 and CGS01 Sub Oscillator acting as a clock divider/gate mixer creating the odd cadence of SymplSEQ 2. Irregular gate pattern from SymplSEQ 1 triggering an ENV and channel A of C106. Irregular trigger pattern from SymplSEQ 2 runs to sync of the other Oakley LFO re-triggering the cycle. This allows me to control the gate length by using the square out of the LFO at low rate and adjusting the pulse width adding sustain time to the ENV and NE BIM it triggers. The sine out of this LFO modulates wave shape on NE AIM."

Oakley Sound Systems Goes Eurorack

Oakley Sound has been known for their larger 5U/MU DIY projects. It looks like they are now entering eurorack.

"PCBs are available right now. Documentation is already available but I'll be adding more details on the construction side of things to the Builder's Guides over the next week or so.

I hope to port most of my 5U modules into Eurorack over the next year or two. As well as some newer ideas I want to build."

You can find details on their DIY Eurorack Synthesizer Projects page.

Pictured:

"The 8HP wide fixed filter bank is based on my own human voice module which was first released as a half rack project and then a 5U module some time ago. Those modules were originally based on the human voice presets of the VP-330. This time I've given each of the seven band pass filters its own level pot."

The ASV - Complete Synthesiser Voice by Oakley

via Oakley Sound Systems

"The Oakley Analogue Synthesiser Voice, or ASV, is a complete analogue synthesiser in a 5U wide, or four MU width, module for the MOTM and MU formats. It consists of the traditional synthesiser architecture of two oscillators feeding a single filter, via a mixer, and then to an amplifier. Two identical four stage envelope generators (ENV1 & ENV2), and one sine wave low frequency oscillator (LFO) act as modulation sources to control the sound in a dynamically interesting way.

Each voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is based around a classic sounding sawtooth core. VCO2's frequency can be hard synchronised to VCO1 by a front panel switch. Both sawtooth and variable width pulse waves are generated. These are both available from the socket field but only one from each VCO may be selected in the audio mixer that feeds the filter. An additional triangle wave from VCO1 can mixed with the audio signal from the filter prior to the final amplifier.

The AVS also has a sub-oscillator. This produces a triangle wave output that is half the frequency of VCO 1, that is, one octave below the pitch of VCO1. By default this is sent to the third level control on the mixer although this can be overridden by inserting a jack plug into the 'mixer in' socket. The sub-oscillator's output is also available on the socket field.

The pitch of both VCOs may be controlled by a master tune control on the front panel. Two octave switches independently control the base pitch of each of the VCOs. Each switch covers a range of three octaves. The pitch of VCO2 may also be offset from VCO 1 by the VCO 2 Tune control. The range of this control covers just over one octave from unison at the 9 o'clock position to an octave above at around 3 o'clock.
Pitch may also controlled by external control voltages (CVs) and internal sources such as the LFO and ENV1. Front panel pots control the depth of this modulation.

The pulse wave output from each VCO can be manually controlled by the pulse width controls. At their middle settings both pots will produce a 50% pulse wave, ie. a square wave. The pulse width of both VCOs can be dynamically altered with external CVs, or internal sources. Both VCOs use special circuitry to make the their average voltage output equal to zero. This reduces audible thumping when the pulse width is modulated quickly."

New Oakley ADR30 DIY Analogue Delay Line and Chorus Module

via Oakley Sound, where you'll find full details and build instructions. A snip for the archives:

"The Oakley Sound Systems ADR30 is an analogue delay module that processes audio signals to create echo and chorus effects. It uses two Xvive MN3005 bucket brigade delay (BBD) integrated circuits to produce a very distinct 'vintage' sound. Classic companding noise reduction circuitry further adds to the sonic characteristics.

Delay time is controlled by a single control on the front panel as well as a built in low frequency modulation oscillator and/or an external control voltage. With short delay times using the modulation oscillator can create both subtle and deep chorus effects. A front panel switch controls whether the signal runs through one or both MN3005 devices. Anti-aliasing filtering is achieved by two 6-pole discrete switched capacitor low pass filters that track the delay time, giving the maximum audio bandwidth for the specific delay time. Thus short delays remain reasonably bright sounding while longer delays become increasingly dark. Delay time can be varied continuously from 15ms to 300ms in short mode, and 30ms to 600ms in long mode.

The unit is mono but features separate outputs for the wet/dry signal and the delayed signal. The audio input and outputs are balanced but are compatible with non balanced connections. A two LED level meter helps you keep signal levels at optimum ensuring a respectable signal to noise ratio without clipping. The unit will not be damaged by driving the unit into overdrive and interesting sounds can be obtained by deliberately doing so, either by turning up the input level or by allowing the feedback to build up to self oscillation. Although the unit does feature noise reduction circuitry the delay line devices are inherently noisy and have a very restricted bandwidth. The signal will deteriorate in an interesting manner as the delay time is increased and/or feedback is heavily applied."

Yamaha CS-80 Blade Runner 2050

Published on Oct 14, 2017 MrFirechild

"This track is using sounds only from the Yamaha CS-80, an iconic analog synthesizer from the late 70s. Vangelis used it a lot for the soundtrack to the original Blade Runner movie and it appears Hans Zimmer used it as well for the 2049. This track is produced and composed by www.firechild.se using the Yamaha CS-80 as the only soundsource. Additional effects include the AVID Revibe Reverb, Oakley SE-330 Ensemble Chorus and Oakley Human Voice which give a choir like sound when feeding it with pure sawtooth waves. This piece of music is an original composition but of course inspired by the mood and vibe of the original Blade Runner soundtrack. Listen in big speakers for the best sound experience. Oakley Introduces the SRE330 - Enhanced Stereo Ensemble and Chorus Module

via Oakley where you'll find additional details.

"The Oakley SRE330 is a multi mode stereo ensemble unit designed to mimic the behaviour of the multichannel chorus and ensemble units of late 1970s and early 1980s. The SRE330 uses up to four channels of bucket brigade delay (BBD) lines and up to four voltage controlled low frequency oscillators (LFO) to achieve a sound reminiscent of various types of string machines, guitar chorus pedals and studio rack effects of yesteryear.

Unlike the original devices the SRE330 allows greater control over the modulation depths, speeds and waveforms, as well as featuring a wet/dry control. Input and output level control pots are also provided to allow maximum flexibility in dealing with a variety of input signal levels. Both the stereo input and output connections are balanced but can be used with unbalanced connections if desired.

The unit features classic companding noise reduction circuitry which keeps unwanted noise levels to an acceptable level while also adding a 'vintage' sound of its own. A four LED level meter helps you keep signal levels at optimum ensuring a good noise to signal ratio without clipping."

Roland System-100 Moogerfooger

Published on May 13, 2017 djthomaswhite

"DIY Roland System-100 filter (Curetronic pcb) version of a Moogerfooger with Oakley Sound LFO (shapeable Triangle and Pulse), relay bypass and plenty of ins and outs. This resonant filter is total vanilla tone compared to the Moog ladder design, but sometimes you just want that smoothness. It has a switchable high pass filter with 4 settings. The LFO can be switched out and replaced with an external signal. The LFO out can be routed to other Foogers or modular gear. There is a Low-High switch controlling rate on the LFO and you can change the shape of the LFO (ramp to trip to saw) or the width of the pulse by turning a knob. LFO waveshape is controlled by a switch. This was a fun one to build and took some time to get right. On to a better video and custom panel legending design."
