NAMM 2024 - Modal - Carbon 8

video upload by sonicstate

"Christian from Modal Electronics unveiled their latest synthesizer, the Carbon 8, at NAMM 2024. This synthesizer is the culmination of Modal's years of experience and knowledge in developing wavetable and virtual analog synthesizers. The Carbon 8 boasts a sound engine that is twice as powerful as their previous models, the Argon 8 and Cobalt 8. It features two distinctive oscillators that generate up to 56 digital core waveforms, allowing users to mix algorithms and wavetables in one synthesizer. The Carbon 8 is designed to cater to modern music styles with rough, edgy sounds, while still offering features like a sequencer, arpeggiator, and various effects.

For more information on the Carbon 8 and other Modal Electronics products, you can visit their website. Stay tuned for updates on future projects from Modal at events like Superbooth. And for existing customers, Modal will continue to provide customer support and their app, which will be updated with a Carbon 8 version upon release.

Carbon 8 Available: Summer 2024. Price 1,099 USD"

Superbooth 2023: Modal Electronics - Carbon 8 & Limited Edition Cobalt And Argon 8

video upload by sonicstate

"Christian at Modal Electronics gave us a preview of the forthcoming 8 voice experimental digital synth Carbon 8.

Carbon 8 employs over 40 complex waveform algorithms, and is geared towards the more agressive and harsh modern spectrum of sounds. With two discrete oscillators, the Carbon 8 has a similar form factor to earlier Modal Synths, but has a new mixing stage with independent level controls for each oscillator. While the synth is in development, it already boasts a total of 33 filters to give total control over sound shaping, a 512 note sequencer, arpeggiator and 26 effect algorithms.

Available September 2023

Price: TBC"

Superbooth 2023: Modal - Limited Edition Cobalt And Argon 8

"At Superbooth 2023, Sonic State caught up with Christian from Modal Electronics who showcased the limited edition Argon 8 and Cobalt 8 synthesizers. In celebration of Modal Electronics' 10-year anniversary, the Argon 8 pays homage to the Modal 002 with its color scheme and comes with firmware version 3.0 and new features. The limited edition synthesizer will be available in stores in September and there will be only 100 units worldwide. It will be priced the same as the regular Argon 8, and it is only available in the 37 key version.

The Cobalt 8 synthesizer, which comes in the dark color scheme of the Modal 008, will be availablearound Christmas time. Modal Electronics is currently seeking customer feedback to decide if they will release the Cobalt 8 in a 37 key version, 61 key version, or as a module. If you want to get your hands on these limited edition Modals, keep an eye out for their release at the end of 2023."

Ever since the K4815 Pattern Generator module was released to great praise in 2010 we have been planning a follow-up product that would take the Pattern Generator concept to a whole new level. After five years of planning and exploration we are proud to present: CARBON

CARBON offers several distinct and powerful functions that will change the way you compose and perform.

Sequencer
CARBON is primarily designed as a pattern-based sequencer. It has six tracks which can each hold 64 steps. Steps can be generated randomly, edited interactively, or recorded from a MIDI keyboard one step at a time, or in realtime while the sequencer is running. Polyphony and CC recording is supported so each step can contain chords or other performance data.

The fun begins once you've got some notes playing back on a track. Choose a region to play back, say, the first 8 steps. The track will play those same 8 steps over and over. Now move to another track and record a new sequence. This sequence can be a different length, or play back at a different speed. It can even play backwards while the other sequence plays forwards.

Remix with Patterns and Scenes!
The real power of CARBON is how variations of sequences can be made. By simply turning the PATTERN control, different steps in the sequence can be enabled and disabled. The patterns will surprise and inspire you by creating new rhythms and motifs with a simple twist of a knob. These are all based on your original sequence and can be changed at any time.

Adding in the concept of scenes lets you quickly switch between different parts of a song or different variations. Scenes can store the range of steps to play, the pattern, track mute state and a number of other parameters. Switching back and forth between scenes offers endless performance potential without ever missing a beat.

The best part of the CARBON sequencer is that all the recording and editing can be done in real-time without ever stopping the sequencer.

Oberheim OB-8 with MIDI and Silver Side Panels

via the listing:
" Power Supply Rebuilt – Re-capped entire power supply with rare and awesome-sounding Samwha RD caps. Samwha caps, in general, are difficult to obtain here in the USA. However, many top notch OEM’s know how good they sound, which is why Marshall, Moog & Orange amps use them almost exclusively in their production. This alone, should speak volumes about their “tone”. However, as an OEM audio engineer, I have access to these wonderful caps and they are “sonic-sleepers” in my opinion. They sound awesome in quality analog synths too, of coarse, yielding big, fat, fluffy, smooth tone. Far superior to Illinois, Sprague and other brands. Try them for yourself, (if you can get them) and hear the difference!
Power Supply Rear-mount TO-3 regulators – were all replaced with custom gold electro-plated units. (Not available on open market, as these are custom plated parts).
Power Supply cable harness- rebuilt with thicker, high-quality copper strand wiring. This helps the power supply “breath” better due to reduced resistance.
Power Supply 723 regulator sockets- replaced; gold plated.
Power Supply 7815 (+15VDC)regulator – replaced; gold plated.
OB-8 Main processor board – Every IC, carefully removed, cleaned, tested and/or replaced as needed.
Power Supply trim pots - replaced with Bourns “plastic-conductive” type, The very best sounding trims available, since all pertinent power supplied to the OB-8’s specified pcb’s must pass through these pots. (Plastic conductive material has a superior “open” tone compared to carbon type pots).
OB-8 Voice Boards - were removed and cleaned. All CEM VCO & related chips were removed and cleaned and replaced with socket enhancement fluid. Both OB-8 voice boards also had all major capacitors replaced with Samwah RD caps.
OB-8 Panel Pot Boards - were removed and cleaned and all pots thoroughly cleaned, lubed and tested.
Special audiophile-grade solder -used on all replaced components for maximum sonic tone and transparency.
Midi Output Jacks -all replaced with Nuetrik/Rean brand.
Bend Lever Assembly -fully cleaned and lubed, All IC’s removed, cleaned, tested and/or replaced.
Keyboard assembly -was removed from chassis and disassembled. Rubber boot contact covers were removed and cleaned. Keypad contacts were all replaced with Sound Doctorin NASA type conductors. OB-8’s are notorious for key contact and misfire issues over time and this solution is the best yet.
Side-End Caps - were refinished/painted with special “stainless-steel” particle paint and then clear lacquered with many coats to achieve glass-like finish. Absolutely stunning and totally says; “I’m Special”!
Inner Chassis - was completely cleaned and new black colored end-cap fasteners were employed.
Fresh Data Dump - was re-loaded with Standard patches.
Midi & Arpeggiator Included! – This OB-8 has both midi and a fully functioning arpeggiator, which is not found on other Oberheim models such as Matrix 12, OBX-a etc.
Owners Manual & Technical/Schematics Manual - both included and bound & printed on high-quality gloss paper!

To top it off, the unit went through a full final check-up with Five Star Engineering in Mesa, AZ. (Dean there,is an ex-Oberheim employee/tech and extremely knowledgeable)! Unit is in full working condition."

NAMM 2024: Modal Carbon8 Sounds Only

video upload by sonicstate

"Jim Heywood from Earmonkey music responded to multiple requests via our Instagram comments to take a closer look at the Modal Electronics Carbon8.

It looks like after a period of uncertainty, that Modal will be back, and the Carbon8 will be in production.

Carbon 8 employs over 40 complex waveform algorithms, and is geared towards the more aggressive and modern spectrum of sounds. With two discrete oscillators, the Carbon 8 has a similar form factor to earlier Modal Synths, but has a new mixing stage with independent level controls for each oscillator."

The Casio XW-P1 Appreciation Video

Published on Dec 24, 2018 ProckGnosis

"This is just an appreciation video for the Casio XW-P1, which I decided to sell. Like a lot of Casio products, there is some really inventive and creative work that went into the synth that often goes unnoticed or underappreciated (by myself even).

I bought it mostly as a cheap keyboard option for gigging with a "classic rock" band, and though I was curious about the sequencer, arpeggiator (which I don't mention in the video at all, unfortunately), and phrase sequencer, I had little reason to use any of those features, and therefore I didn't explore them so much. And that's unfortunate, because I think they are some of the stronger features on the synth, and would likely be appealing for someone wanting to get started with some DAW-less sequencing for not much money. I'm just more of a DAW-full kind of guy.

Loose Timeline for the Video
Intro - 03:08
The Step Sequencer - 11:30
The Phrase Sequencer - 16:16
The Drawbar Organ - 18:00
The Hex Layer Synth - 20:16
The Solo Synth - 22:58
Some Final Thoughts - 27:06
Bonus - Alt versions of ProckGnosis Theme with the XW-P1 - 28:22

For folks even more curious about the keyboard, I've copied Casio's specs on the XW-P1 below, though the formatting was mostly lost.

"The 'Emissions' expansion for Carbon Electra has been designed with warm sounds influenced from the natural world. The collection will suit all producers looking to add depth and mysticism to their work.

Containing 64 presets focusing on lush keys, rich bass timbres, smooth pads, beautiful leads and hypnotic sequences. Layering and fusing with processed beats will ensure emotive textural productions, reminiscent of Warp Records.

Utilising Carbon's built in sequencer, this pack lets you access complex sequences and bass rhythms at a single keystroke. Build harmonic layers with delicate keys and full bodied pads or inject energy into your compositions with crisp leads.

The collection is also suited to audio/visual composers wishing to bring thought provoking electronica to their scores.

Kilpatrick Audio Carbon Live Jam 1

Published on Feb 12, 2017 Jae Ryan

"First jam with the Kilpatrick Audio Carbon. It's sequencing the Prophet 6 (arpeggio), OB-6 (hi-pass bass) and the Model D (melodic arpeggio) and sending clock to the TR-8 but drums are sequenced from the TR-8! I haven't figured out nearly all this machine can do yet and this doesn't take advantage of the bias tracks or song mode. It's just a simple repeating sequence and hopefully in the next jam i'll explore the scenes function more deeply. A transposed version of the sequence at some point would have made it much better!

I forgot to arm recording on the Juno so what you hear when I play it is strictly just the wet signal of it hitting the Strymons. It sounded ok that way and I was much to lazy to re-do! The Strymon pedals were the ONLY effects used and they were not used sparingly.

If anyone has any questions about Carbon or Suggestions/Tips if you're a user that would be fantastic! Otherwise, thanks for listening and send me some links to stuff if you think I'd dig it!"

ARP AXXE WITH ORIGINAL CASE SERVICED

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Here's what was done to the Axxe:
-All sliders serviced, with carbon cleaned or replaced as needed,
-The original Decay slider was replaced with a new, dead-stock, slider.
-The internal power supply was completely replaced with a new New England Analog custom made power supply
which is sure to last another 30 years, this obviously will help the synth stay in tune as well.
-The synth was tuned and the filter calibrated.
-1/8" CV input jack added for control of cutoff frequency
-Switch installed to allow LFO to run free, (as opposed to restarting at every new note trigger.)
-1/8" Clock In jack to sync the S&H LFO rate to an analog arpeggio clock or whatever.
(This works best with +8 volt triggers or clock signals)
-New 1/4" High output jack installed
-The actual keys and connections were NOT serviced as it still plays pretty well"

Velocité - full album (Mike Oldfield meets Air & Tame Impala)

video upload by Caught In Joy

"Inspired by the fluid energy of Tangerine Dream, the layered elegance of Mike Oldfield, and the dreamlike pulse of Air and Tame Impala, this album explores the strange intersections of speed and stillness.

Velocité is a deep, cinematic dive into motion, memory, and momentum—an hour-long journey shaped by analog synths, ambient textures, and hypnotic rhythms.

Created live and mixed with obsessive attention to detail, Velocité captures that fleeting feeling of being in transit—somewhere between the past and the future. Best experienced in one uninterrupted listen.

Composed, mixed and mastered by Caught In Joy. Karol Pokojowczyk uses Bitwig, Moog One, Moog Matriarch, Prophet-10, 3x Moog Mavis, TipTop Buchla modules, Make Noise Strega, Strymon Magneto, Arturia V-Collection and an army of guitar pedals. Performed and recorded live on tape with TEAC 80-8.
