DSI Tempest - Impressions by Chris Randall

flickr By Chris Randall

Chris Randall of Analog Industries and Audio Damage put up some impressions of the new DSI Tempest. He sounds pretty impressed.

"To describe this thing as bad ass is to understate the matter entirely."

If you followed the DSI line of synths you know the Evolver has four oscillators, two analog and two digital with the Prophet VS waveforms. The Prophet '08 and Tetra forgo the digital oscillators. The Tempest has the four with additional digital waveforms added. "The digital oscillators comprise several methods of making noise (they did a very good job in the noise selection department), a couple hundred different drum samples running the gamut of styles, and the complete Prophet VS waveform library. They are quite capable, and while being necessarily drum-centric, Tempest can also do a pretty favorable turn as a synth."

The one thing to note is the Tempest is six voice polyphonic, while the Polyevolver is four. Be sure to see the rest of Chris' impressions. He also comments on how the envelops differ, MPC-60 style swing on the unit and it's overall tightness.

"The best thing I saw today was the Schmidt Polysynth. While it is somewhat comical when you're sitting on your couch reading about it (and I laughed when I saw the Messe announcement, just like the rest of you) in real life it is as close to a work of art as a synthesizer can be in this day and age. Completely over the top? Sure. But you get a lot for your synthesizer dollar. Good thing, because it's a lot of dollars. Absolutely beautiful synth, though."

micronaut - axial

micronaut - axial from Chris Randall on Vimeo.
Chris Randall of Analog Industries and Audio Damage.
"This is a video shot and edited entirely by my 16-yr old cousin Michael for one of my micronaut tracks while he stayed with me for his spring break. It was shot with a Cannon HV20, edited in Final Cut Express, with minor post in After Effects. It consists of footage he shot around PDX. Just to be clear, my input consisted almost entirely of explaining to him how quickly the edits should happen for "glitch" style videos, and showing him some Chris Cunningham work. Otherwise, he came up with this entirely on his own.

For the micronaut song, gear used is MKS80 for the melody, Goldbaby samples for the drums, Soniccouture Abstract Bass (pt. 3) for the bass, and some sample I had lying about that I can't remember the source of for the electric piano part. Audio Damage effects, plus the Eventide H8000 for the pitch-shifted part on the melody and reverbs. Recorded and mixed in Cubase."

ambient_02 delay_repeat: rhodes, meeblip, nanoloop, count to five, H9

Published on Sep 23, 2018 Chris Randall

"Some Sunday afternoon vibes. The Rhodes is running through the Montreal Assembly Count To Five pedal, where I grab that initial chord that provides the bed of the song. From there, to an Eventide H9 Max for some reverse delay action, and then in to the iPad.

The Gameboy (running the nanoloop mono cartridge) goes in to the Field Kit, and the Field Kit's aux output is running to a Radio Shack Reverb, and back in to the Field Kit. From there, in to the iPad.

The synth sound is coming from an original MeeBlip, which is driven via MIDI from Bram Bos' Particle MIDI plugin (part of his Rosetta suite of MIDI plugs) running on AUM, which provides the mixing duties and also hosts Audio Damage Eos 2, Rough Rider 2, Dubstation 2, and Discord 4 plugins."

chris randall - clicks and pops

Published on Jan 10, 2017 Chris Randall

"Just a couple of minutes from the bed I'm working on this week. I'm experimenting with using gates and envelopes not attached to anything, just run straight in to the mixer. So the clicky sound sources in this video are Sequencer 1 and White Whale directly, run through effects and stuff."

chris randall - exploration.03

Published on Jul 4, 2015 Chris Randall

"Another workflow exploration, live to 2-track tape. For this one, I made all the drum samples on the Euro and sampled them in to Maschine, so I could have more control over the rhythm than sequencing it 'live.' The 2nd (yellow) bank of Maschine has an instance of Silent Way Sync that is clocking the Euro. First (orange) and third (green) banks have drum samples from the Euro. The two synth lines are playing from the two Audio Damage Sequencer 1 modules."

chris randall - barthes (second return)

YouTube Published on Aug 19, 2012 by Cranda11

"Another Sunday jam, continuing my "old-skool IDM" phase, apparently. This one has a drum loop sliced in the Maschine as the main sound component, along with simple little synth lines from MeeBlip and AniMoog (in order of appearance.) The bass is coming from Massive.

When you see me peck that little Akai MIDI controller occasionally, I'm triggering Audio Damage Replicant's MIDI slicing features, and I have the knobs on the Akai mapped to the two filter frequencies and the "Reverse Random" slider. The only other effects are the Roland RE-201 Space Echo (on the two synth lines) and the Eventide Space (on various other things, for texture.)"

chris randall - big beating

Published on Oct 25, 2013 Chris Randall·50 videos

"We moved house last week, and I just got most of my office set up. Sat down to play about, and this is the result. I'm of the considered opinion that 90s style Big Beat is due for a comeback.

Gear used: Maschine, Elektron Analog Four, Eurorack, Nagra III, a whole slew of Audio Damage plug-ins. As usual."
