Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode Has Passed Away

This post features two images of Andy. One from Wikipedia, and one from Discogs. The following bio is from Wikipedia. Don't miss the last sentence.
"Andrew John Leonard Fletcher (8 July 1961 – c. 26 May 2022), sometimes known as Fletch, was an English keyboard player, DJ, and a founding member of the electronic band Depeche Mode. In 2020, Fletcher was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Depeche Mode.[1]
In the late 1970s, Fletcher and schoolmate Vince Clarke formed the short-lived band No Romance in China, in which Fletcher played bass guitar. In 1980, Fletcher met Martin Gore at the Van Gogh pub on Paycocke Road in Basildon. With Clarke, the trio, now all on synthesizer, formed another group called Composition of Sound.[2] Clarke served as chief songwriter and also provided lead vocals until singer Dave Gahan was recruited into the band later that year, after which they adopted the name Depeche Mode at Gahan's suggestion.[3] Clarke left the group in late 1981, shortly after the release of their debut album Speak & Spell.[2]
Their 1982 follow-up album, A Broken Frame, was recorded as a trio, with Gore taking over primary songwriting duties.[4] Musician and producer Alan Wilder joined the band in late 1982 and the group continued as a quartet until Wilder's departure in 1995. From then on, the core trio of Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher remained active, up to the release of their 2017 album Spirit and ensuing world tour.[5]
Fletcher's role within Depeche Mode was often a topic of speculation. In early incarnations of the band, he played (electric and later synth) bass. As the band evolved after Vince Clarke's departure in 1981, Fletcher's role changed as each of the band members took to the areas that suited them and benefited the band collectively. In a key scene in D.A. Pennebaker's 1989 documentary film about the band, Fletcher clarified these roles: "Martin's the songwriter, Alan's the good musician, Dave's the vocalist, and I bum around."
Andy Fletcher and Daniel Miller talking about Depeche Mode early days
video upload by Michele Bisceglia
"This interview was shot in november 2015, but never edited and published.
We were in Verbier, Switzerland, for the 3 days happening Audi-o-Rama.
Depeche Mode founding member and keyboardist Fletch & Mute Records boss Miller remember the day they met and discuss other stories about the early days of the band"
A search on the first video to feature Depeche Mode comes up with the following 1981 performance from Top of the Pops. Andy Fletcher is on the Moog Prodigy.

Depeche Mode - Photographic / Some Bizzare Version (Cover by Synthfluencer)
video upload by Synthfluencer
"'This is Photographic!' - Depeche Mode fans know these words Dave Gahan yelled when playing live in Hammersmith Odeon in 1982. Actually, Photographic is a song from the very, very early days of Depeche Mode and might be created when they still called themselves 'Composition of Sound'. The 'Some Bizzare Version' is actually the first song they officialy released ever on a compilation named 'Some Bizzare Album'.
The song is one of the darker, harder DM songs and this version is even more raw and gritty. It is very reminiscent of the transitions from punk to wave, and the DIY aesthetic of punk in particular comes to the fore here with the hand-played synthesizers. Well before Depeche Mode redefined the genre of synth pop this early version of 'Photographic' is recorded on the gear they could afford back in the days: A Kawai S-100F, a Yamaha CS5, a Moog Prodigy and a Korg KR-55 drum machine. In my cover version I use two of the original synths, the Kawai and the Yamaha to recreate an authentic sound. The role of the Prodigy is taken over by a Behringer Model D, some support sounds by Pro-1 and Pro-800."

I noticed he recorded it mainly with a Yamaha DX7. In fact, he used six cartridge preset sounds (that I switched live). So I decided to recreate it. None of the backtrack sounds were recorded with MIDI or other clock resources.
All sounds (*unless stated): Yamaha DX7.

Drumbox: Boss DR55 (sampled)

Interview with Henning Krane of Don Juan Dracula

I recently discovered Don Juan Dracula back on March 4th, this year, when their manager Shane Chisholm contacted me about doing an interview with the band. I'll be honest and say I was a little reluctant at first because this site is about "the synths and not the band," but I liked what I heard, so I asked him if it would be alright to focus on synths and run the interview with their keyboard player. I got the thumbs up, and the following is that interview. I've been listening to their album for some time now and I must say I really do like it. Catchy stuff that will get stuck in your head for days and keep the energy going. Don't miss the videos below. One of which, "Run Away With You" features a kid in the video with a custom toy keyboard. Apparently the kid in the video made it when he saw Hennings keytar and they decided they just had to let him use it in the video. Pretty cool. That said...

Henning: Our songwriter Henrik uses keyboards as well as guitar when he writes songs, but while recording and live it's me who playes the keyboards.
2. When and how did you get into synths?
Henning: In 2000 I think, Henrik asked me to play keyboards in his new band. I hadn't really played keyboards before, but like a lot of kids I was forced to take piano lessons when I was growing up, so I still remembered a little. When we started out, all we had was Henriks old Casiotone MT-800 and a Casio SA-10. Those two keyboards were the basis of our first EP and live-shows for a couple of years.
3. Do you view yourself as a synthesist, keyboard player or both?
Henning: I don't really see myself as neither actually. I like to collect old keyboards, synths and gadgets that make cool sounds. And I play them in a band.
4. What synths do you use in the studio and on tour.
Henning: Live i mainly use a Yamaha SHS-10 as a MIDI-Controller for the Korg Microkorg. That way I'm able to move around more on stage. I really like the diversity of the microkorg, and the simplicity of it's interface. Being able to quickly switch between custom sounds and finished presets makes it ideal for live use, which is probably why everyone is using them these days. Though it seems everyone is using one these days.
I also still use that old Casiotone and a Yamaha kids organ once bought at a flea-market for the lead-sound of "Take Me Home". We have gradually moved away from the pure Casio-pop sound, using more real instruments as well as synthesizers and not just FM-keyboards.
In the studio we have started to use more soft-synths lately as well, mainly because it's easier, and cheaper. Unfortunately we don't have the money to buy every synth we want.
We will be recording our next album soon, and we're looking to purchase the new Korg MicroX before that. I'm also trying to get hold of a Korg MS-10 for the studio-session. Everytime I buy a new synth or keyboard we try to use it somewhere in the recordings. That way we get a variety in the sound. I try to not use the same sounds more than once... We have used quite a lot of different gear over the years. Mainly cheap kids-like stuff, I just like the sound...

Henning: The Casio VL-1. Just because it's so small, and still so funny sounding. And it's a calculator as well. A friend of ours actually used his on a math exam once...
6. What do you think about the role of synthesizers in music today and it's influences in the past? What would you consider to be you main influences (musicians, technologies, anyone)?
Henning: The last couple of years you have started to hear more and more bands becoming popular using synthesizers in their songs, and I like that of course.
-Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yazoo -not so much Erasure) and OMD has influenced me a lot with their simple monophonic style of playing and composing.
-As well as Casio.
7. What is your dream synth and why?
Henning: I have been dreaming of getting a Moog Prodigy and a Yamaha Cs-5 for a little while. Because they are the synths mostly used on my favorite album by Depeche Mode "Speak & Spell".
8. Do you prefer a particular type of synthesis (analog, digital, modular, FM, etc) and why?
Henning: I do (of course) prefer real vintage analog stuff, because it's the "real deal". But it's very hard to get hold of here in Norway, and lately americans on ebay don't want to send their stuff to Europe anymore. I also have a love for beaten up kids' casio stuff. I still look for them at flea markets every spring.
9. BTW, I was wondering what the little keyboard in the "Run Away With You" video was?
Henning: haha !
-it's actually a danish kids toy keyboard called "elektronisk keyboard 11 -100" gaffa-taped onto a kids guitar!
-The kid in the video made it himself actually before the videoshoot after he had seen pictures of me with my keytar. So we had to let him use it...
--------------------------
And there you have it. I want to thank Shane Chisholm and Henning Krane of Don Juan Dracula for taking the time out for the interview. I also want to give a big thanks to Shane for giving out 20 free downloads of DJD's album to Matrixsynth readers (they are all gone, btw). DJD is about to break out on the international scene and I wish them all the luck. I had a great time going back and forth with them for this interview. When they get big, remember... You saw them here first!
I'll leave you with two of my favorites from the band:
Don Juan Dracula, Runaway With You
Don Juan Dracula, Take Me Home

Wax - (Re-uploaded with new mix) Yamaha Montage - Ableton Live - Akai APC Mini
Published on Jul 31, 2016 Earmonkey Music
"EDIT: One nice thing about using Ableton and tracking this jam is that I could go back and remix. I noticed that the synth parts I was playing live were too hot so I went back and remixed those and replaced the audio track with the new mix.....Noice!!! ... So here's what is going on: I picked up an APC Mini because I was hoping it would allow me to create more complex live performances. Wow does it! This is a live jam with 100% Yamaha Montage. I recorded a bunch of loops into Ableton then used the APC to trigger them. All tracks were either played live and recorded for playback from Ableton, or just straight played live from the Montage. Such a phenomenal instrument this Yamaha thing.... I love it. Oh and I have to thank Depeche Mode for inspiring the first few bars that spawned this whole thing"

80s synth-pop/Italo disco LIVE from the studio - Old school MIDI sequenced setup
Published on Nov 23, 2017 Espen Kraft
"- Never Let You Go
80s inspired synth-pop Italo Disco LIVE in the studio
Everything is played by hand and/or sequenced live. Nothing pre-recorded.
The Emax II bass in the verse and the underlying drum-loop in the verses are lifted/sampled from my own released version of this track. The track can be heard on my website:
https://www.espenkraft.com
Gear used:
Drums: E-MU ESI4000, Akai S1000, Roland TR-626 (sequenced for the most parts, some live playing in the bridge)
Bass: Roland S-10 (sequenced) and Emax II (live playing)
Synths: Roland D-550, Roland JX-8P, Roland Alpha Juno 2, Yamaha TX802. (all sequenced)
Emax & Korg DW-8000 (live playing)
Strymon BlueSky & TC flashback delay effects
Sequencer: Roland MC50 sequencer drives everything through a Opcode 128X MIDI patchbay
Drums, Bass, Synths are recorded through a Yamaha 01V digital mixer and piped optically into Audient ID4 and into Nuendo. From there I have 2 separated stereo tracks + two mono bass tracks ending up in Nuendo for further processing/mixing.
This gives me a much better chance of balancing the mix instead of having just a stereo track of everything without the possibility to adjust the separate “stems”.
My tracks pay homage to all synth-pop acts of the 80'ies like Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, Ultravox, OMD, Euryhmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha and many more.
A use mostly old gear in my music and among them Roland Juno 6, Alpha Juno 2, D550 and JX-8P.
Korg DW-8000, Elka EK22, Yamaha DX7 and TX802 and drum machines Yamaha RX11 and Roland TR-626.
Effects are usually handled by Strymon and TC electronics.
Sampling is done on my E-MU ESI-4000, Akai S1000, Roland S-10, Emax II."

"Arturia advances history-making Minimoog to iPad musical masses!
"The iMini turned my iPad into an ‘old skool’ analogue bass monster! Its sound is irresistibly ‘phat’ and very close to the original. If you want that typical dirty Moog sound then the iMini is all you’ll ever need. It’s by far the most powerful and hypnotising synth app on the market.”
- Stefan Bodzin, 2013 (DJ/producer, remixer of Depeche Mode, Booka Shade, and more)
GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of iMini, an authentic recreation of the all-time classic Minimoog monosynth for Apple’s all-conquering iPad, as of February 27...
iMini is based on the TAE® (True Analog Emulation) synthesis technology found in Arturia’s award-winning Mini V soft synth, meticulously modelling the distinctive tones and analogue nuances of the legendary Seventies-vintage Minimoog Model D monosynth. Moog changed the musical world with the Minimoog and Arturia helped change the music software world with the Mini V.
Arturia now brings the still-sought-after classic Minimoog sound to the musical masses, transforming any iPad mini, iPad 2, or iPad with Retina display into the ultimate analogue synth emulation! Those timeless three oscillators and that 24dB per octave fabled filter are all present and accounted for in iMini. It also successfully sports the look and feel of Dr Bob Moog’s namesake iconic synthesizer for all to see (and hear). But being a game-changing iPad app for 2013 and not an analogue synth design dating back to 1970 means there’s a whole lot more to iMini than first meets the eye...
Any serious synthesizer connoisseur will instantly recognise the MAIN mode screen as an eye-catching rendering of the Minimoog Model D front panel, albeit with welcome additional ‘analogue’ CHORUS AMT. and DELAY AMT. level controls, as well as a POLY switch for playing polyphonically — impossible in 1970, obviously! Other subtle supplements include a gearwheel icon above the keyboard — press to reveal GLIDE, DECAY, LEGATO, and SCROLL switches for performance keyboard control, plus a SCALE function to choose from no fewer than 26 different scales and modes. Meanwhile, iMini comes complete with hundreds of superb sounds showcasing its supreme sonic versatility; press LOAD from the menu bar and choose from sound designer or category — couldn’t be simpler!
But ‘behind’ that familiar-looking MAIN screen lies a wealth of truly 21st Century audio action: the PERFORMANCE page accesses an arpeggiator with two latch modes and two assignable XY pads for creating all kinds of patterns and real-time morphing sounds; the FX page provides iMini with the same wide-ranging CHORUS and accurate ANALOG DELAY models found in the above-mentioned Mini V software — subtle sound thickening to wildly modulated effects (chorus) and sync to external tempo (stereo delay) possibilities abound here! Handily, all onscreen knobs and switches in each iMini page can easily be assigned to MIDI CC allowing automation from any external MIDI source. The default MIDI map will automatically work with Arturia MiniLab or Analog Player 25 Universal MIDI Controller keyboards!
And that’s not all: the CONNECT page is the gateway to making iMini talk to the outside world (using the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit) — use WIST (Wireless Sync Start Technology) to sync the arpeggiator and delay to other iPad or iPhone apps, and integrate iMini into a complete studio environment via Retronyms Tabletop. This free iPad app allows multiple iMini instances to be simultaneously run; real-time performance recording into a sequencer; parameter automation; processing of third-party, Tabletop-ready apps through the iMini filter, and more. “iMini is an ideal Tabletop-ready app,” says Retronyms Co-Founder John-Paul Walton. “It’s a fresh take on a legendary synth, and comes packed with a ton of amazing presets — everything from retro space sounds to contemporary bass noise.”
Thanks to iMini, today there’s really no excuse for not taking that history-making Minimoog sound anywhere anytime. And in recognition of the groundbreaking instrument to which it owes its very existence, for every iMini sold, Arturia will make a donation to The Bob Moog Foundation, whose Executive Director, Michelle Moog-Koussa, kindly adds: “We are grateful to Arturia and Retronyms for donating part of the proceeds from the iMini in support of our mission to ignite creativity at the intersection of music, science, history, and innovation. A portion of this funding will go to support our educational initiative, Dr Bob’s SoundSchool, which teaches children the science of sound through the magic of music.”
For Frédéric Brun, Arturia’s President, the feeling is mutual: “We are delighted to donate to The Bob Moog Foundation and acknowledge our gratitude to Robert Moog, who helped us when we released our first virtual instrument, the Modular Moog V, back in 2003. We are also thrilled to work with Retronyms, who are a great company and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to iOS. The iMini sets a new standard for what a virtual instrument should sound like on an iPad.”
So let’s make music and help history come alive with iMini in more ways than one, and also support the dream of building the Moogseum (Bob Moog Museum), the convergence of The Bob Moog Foundation’s goals of inspiring and educating people through electronic music.
Appropriate iPad owners can purchase iMini directly from Apple’s App Store during a three-week introductory launch pricing period for €8.99 EURO/$9.99 USD (rising to €19.99 EURO/$21.99 USD thereafter)."

Follow-up to The Toa Mata Band - Tiny Robots Playing Tiny Synths
"Toa Mata Band is known as the World's first LEGO robotic band controlled by Arduino Uno which is hooked up to a MIDI sequencer. In this video, the third episode, the robots are playing some unconventional drum-percussions made by some food packaging are captured by a contact microphone (piezo) and processed in real time in the D.A.W. Ableton Live. A brand new device appears for the first time, it's a moving platform on x-axis, made of Lego bricks, gears and servo motors that permits to move with semitones-steps the tiny synth.
The song is a cover of the famous synth-pop band Depeche Mode, it's a personal tribute to the band who made my days in the 80's.
The performance was recorded live in July 2014.
This video is only a showcase of my works, it's not for commercial
