Modular Synthesizer Ensemble at Superbooth 23

"The 'Modular Synthesizer Ensemble' is a social-acoustic and participative music project and offers the possibility to make music together in an ensemble without any previous musical knowledge.

The project makes it possible to design the process of creating electronic sounds with the analog Modular Synthesizer. The participants experiment, improvise and compose together and perform the results live in public.

In collaboration with the Miller-Zillmer Foundation which supports people regardless of their social and national background and promotes projects that are sustainable, that empower and create education, while adding value to the broader community.

Driven by a cultural led philosophy delivering interesting visions. We stand up for human rights and integration, for social inclusion, respect and tolerance, world openness and the protection of cultural assets. A foundation for important works of collaboration and engagement.

About the Artist

Honeysmack is an electronic musician hailing from Melbourne, Australia. He has been actively producing music and performing live Techno for almost 3 decades, earning a reputation as one of Australia's leading electronic music pioneers.

Honeysmack grew from the underground rave scene of the early 90s, combining Acid and Techno to create a unique sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Labelled a maverick artist who brings a punk-rock aesthetic and philosophy to electronic music. He has released numerous albums and EPs, toured extensively and completed a PhD in Acid Techno! Honeysmack's performances are widely acclaimed for their high energy, dynamic and spontaneous character, all fuelled by his electronic music hardware.

Dr. David Haberfeld, his real name, firmly believes the essence of electronic dance music resides in a live improvised approach, very different to DJing. Equal parts performer, producer, prankster, punk and disrupter; Honeysmack’s reputation for challenging audiences by pushing the creative boundaries of Techno and how it is presented is consistent throughout his work. "HERE is a test run (minus knobs) of the AUDIO ARK, a handmade box designed for allowing a guitarist to make some very far out noises.

This video is a very basic demo and does not get too heavily into the modulation abilities of the box. Lot's of people have been asking me if it tracks well. I think it does the job. But this box was really meant for WEIRD sounds more than hot licks.

please dont judge based on audio quality, or camera work. and the bad hot licks are simply to show how the machine tracks the guitar.

It's been ages since my last live video so I thought I would post up a little jam I was playing with for an hour or two today. This is a concept track really - every sound that is in this track is made from with a sine wave or white noise. The track itself is a super-stripped techno track, using 13 parts all playing live on the Virus Ti2 which is being sequenced by Ableton Live.

Some of the parts are brought in and out using the UC-33 controller, and the rest I am just selecting clips in Ableton using the mouse. It's nothing special really - just a techno groove that I was bobbing about to!

As a bit of an update on me, things are going great just now - I've got a lot of gigs these days including a European tour in April / May and also getting the chance to warm up for my hero Alex Under at the Sub Club in Glasgow in April - amazing. At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Caroline from MyVolts, and they've added to their panoply of useful power solutions for musicians. MyVolts showcased their new product, the Alchemist power distribution hub, which harnesses the versatility of USB-C to deliver various voltages from 5V to 20V. This means you can power a range of equipment, from vintage synths to modern gear, with one device. They've also taken their USB power innovation to the next level with a step-up 12V power tip, allowing users to draw 18W from USB to power gear like the Electron Analog Four on the go. 2. Synthfest UK 23: Rides In The Storm - SED CSM Synth Voice

At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Uwe from Rides In The Storm to get a glimpse of their upcoming modular synth voice module, the SED CSM. This module is a powerhouse of sound design possibilities, offering a wide range of features packed into a single unit. With two oscillator sections, three waveform options, pulse width modulation, and a wave folder, there's plenty of sonic flexibility on tap.

The SED CSM also includes a robust mixer section, a ring modulator, wave folder, noise source, and an external input, expanding its sound-shaping capabilities. Uwe demonstrated how the module can be used for lush soundscapes and dynamic modulation with its various features. SED CSM offers envelope generators with loopable modes and versatile LFOs and filter options.

3. Synthfest UK 23: Analogue Solutions - Ample Desktop Pin matrix

We returned to the Analogue Solutions booth to chat again with Tom who showed us the second synth he’s released this year, Ample. Ample is a 3 VCO synth which combines some of the greatest bits of other Analogue Solutions synths, including a patch pin matrix similar to the Vostok, a sequencer taken from the generator, an interval generator similar to that on the Fusebox, and a 24dB filter akin to that of the Pro One. It even has the same delay circuit from the new Maximus.

There are 3 types of pin for the pin matrix with resistances of 0 ohms on the black pin 10k ohms on the red one and blue giving a value of 100k, which allows for more flexibility in attenuating the signals you patch. Tom told us that Ample is particularly suited to percussion, with its snappy filter, and various clock sources available, and though Ample is in a desktop format, Tom has given us plenty of space between the controls so no accidental knob bumping can occur.

4. Synthfest UK 23: Expert Sleepers - Analogue Modules

At Synthfest UK 2023, we had the chance to chat with Os from Expert Sleepers, known for their versatile digital modules. However, Os has been exploring the analog side of modular synthesis and has introduced a range of eight analog modules.

Among the analog modules, Os showcased a squelchy filter, oscillators with unconventional sine wave cores, and an intriguing octave fuzz effect. He emphasized that these analog modules offer a different approach to sound generation and signal processing compared to their digital counterparts. Os also pointed out that once an analog module is designed and built, it's a finished product, offering a sense of completeness that's distinct from the continuous updates often associated with digital modules.

5. Synthfest UK 23: Yamaha - DM3 - Super Compact Digital Mixer

At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Chris from Yamaha to take a look at their latest offering, the DM3 digital mixer. This compact 16-input mixer packs some impressive features into a small footprint, making it suitable for a variety of applications. With a focus on pro audio and audio versatility, the DM3 boasts brand-new microphone preamps inspired by Yamaha's high-end CL and QL series, ensuring top-notch audio quality. 6. Synthfest UK 23: Tone Science - Triple Cross - Chance Delay

At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Ian Boddy from DIN Records, known for his prolific work in the electronic music scene. While DIN Records is celebrating its 25th anniversary next year, Ian has expanded his creative endeavors with the release of two modules under the sub-label Tone Science in collaboration with AJH Synth. The Triple Cross module offers versatile signal manipulation capabilities, enabling crossfading, morphing, panning, with non-synchronous LFOs and DC-coupled outputs. The Chance Delay module introduces a unique concept of probability-driven gate delay. Musicians can control the likelihood of triggers passing through, allowing for rhythmically intricate and ever-changing sequences. These modules are designed to enhance the performative aspect of modular synthesis, providing musicians with dynamic tools for evolving soundscapes and rhythmic complexity.

7. Synthfest UK 23: 1010 Music - Bluebox Eurorack Edition

At Synthfest UK 2023, we had the opportunity to chat with Steve from 1010 Music about their latest creation, the Bluebox Eurorack Edition. This module was born out of customer demand, as users of the original Blue Box desktop unit clamored for a Eurorack-compatible version. The Bluebox Eurorack Edition packs all the power and versatility of the desktop version but with a few key differences. It offers mono inputs and outputs that can be combined into stereo, six CV inputs for mapping to various parameters, and two dedicated USB-C ports—one for MIDI and the other for USB audio. This means you can connect your Blue Box to a Mac, PC, or iPad, send and receive audio tracks, and still record all 12 tracks, plus a master track and two effects sends, separately on a micro SD card. An upcoming firmware update will also bring stereo audio in both directions to the Blue Box Desktop Edition, offering even more flexibility in routing and recording. 8. Synthfest UK 23: Nonlinear Labs - C15 - Software Updates

At Synthfest UK 2023, we had a conversation with Tim from Nonlinear Labs, the creators of the highly expressive C15 synthesizer. Tim shared some exciting updates that have recently been implemented with the inclusion of LFOs via looping envelopes providing musicians with more sonic versatility. The C15's unique concept, based on a two-operator FM synthesis engine, remains intact, but these new LFO capabilities expand its sonic palette. Tim also showcased the expanded key tracking options, which can stretch pitches to create unique tonal textures. Furthermore, he highlighted the new twin-engine feature, which allows for cascading delays and creating captivating stereo soundscapes. Tim also hinted at future developments that owners of this expressive synthesizer can look forward to.

9. Synthfest UK 23: Kenton - LNDX Midi Line Driver

At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with John from Kenton Electronics to check out their latest offering, the LNDX Line Driver, a handy solution for extending MIDI signals over long distances. Designed to address the challenges of maintaining stable MIDI connections in large venues and studios, the Line Driver utilizes Cat5 cables to transmit MIDI signals up to an impressive 500 meters. The stock from the first two low-volume production runs of the NES Poly (completed earlier this year) quickly sold out. The primary objective of this Kickstarter campaign is to raise funds for a third, higher-volume production run of the synth. (Producing a larger volume of synths will help lower the per-unit manufacturing cost.) Hopefully, the campaign will also facilitate the sharing of music and custom NES Poly Chiptune Synth patches created by the community of backers.

The NES Poly Chiptune Synthesizer is a MIDI-controlled polyphonic synth that emulates the sound of the Nintendo Entertainment System video game console, allowing musicians to create NES / Famicom style chipmusic by simply connecting a MIDI controller.

The NES Poly Chiptune Synthesizer is designed to work with a variety of MIDI controllers, including keyboards, sequencers, and most other MIDI devices that feature a standard MIDI DIN output. Musicians can even control the synth with a laptop or desktop computer via a MIDI interface cable."

PERCUSSA INTRODUCES XMX EURORACK MODULE AT SUPERBOOTH 2024

Los Angeles, CA, May 14th 2024 - PERCUSSA is set to return to Superbooth and is introducing its new eurorack module to the market, the XMX, at Superbooth 2024 in Berlin, this week.

"The XMX is the smaller brother of our succesful SSP (super signal processor) eurorack DSP module, which has found its way into recording studios and live on stage around the world over the past years, enabling eurorack modular synthesists to build compact and powerful systems, for sound design, synthesis, effects processing, recording and live performance", says Bert Schiettecatte, Founder of PERCUSSA.

With the XMX, PERCUSSA aims to make the synthesis and effects modules and features of the SSP available to a wider audience at an affordable price and smaller form factor.

The XMX is available through PERCUSSA's website at an introductory price of $499, starting on May 16th, the first day of Superbooth 2024. PERCUSSA plans to start shipping the XMX in early July. Eurorack dealers wishing to stock the XMX are welcome to contact PERCUSSA for dealer pricing and ordering.

Similarly to the SSP, the XMX combines a number of functions into one module:

The XMX uses the same preset format as the SSP. Users can build and save patches on the XMX and exchange patches with SSP users.

The XMX comes with a fast microSD card and factory firmware and boots from microSD similarly to the SSP. The XMX allows the user to build patches including multiple instances of the above modules in any combination. The XMX runs the same software as the SSP, with an improved and simplified patching system.

The XMX supports the same open source plugin SDK as available for the SSP, which 3rd party developers can use to develop their own plugins. The XMX is a linux platform and just like the SSP, also supports development of standalone software which can replace the factory firmware.

Additionally, The Technobear, one of PERCUSSA's active community members and SSP users, has developed an alternative firmware for the XMX called Trax, which he plans to release over the coming months. He has also adapted his popular plugins for the SSP, to run on the XMX, and will be presenting his work in a video to be released during Superbooth.

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #122: Yamaha TX81Z - Song 1

"This is the first song with the Yamaha TX81Z. It's an 8-notes, 8-part multitimbral FM synthesizer from 1987. In contrast to the DX-7 it use 4-Operators instead of 6 but supports additional waveforms other than just a sine wave.

This song is based on 'My Lord Willoughby's Welcome Home' by John Dowland who lived 1563–1626.

I used for the recording the following FX chain: TX81Z - DigiTech Ventura - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

"In the first enclosure there are two 4770 Watt Block power modules for 8 and 18 VDC, there is a 4740 Envelope Generator, a 4710 Balanced Modulator, a 2720-12 Inverter Buffer and a 2720-11 Envelope Follower.

In the second enclosure there is a 4771 Regulated Power complex power generator with variable voltages and polarities (rare), a 4730 Voltage Controlled Filter, a 4711 Four Into Two Mixer, a 4761 Wing power block, a 4720 Voltage Controlled Oscillator, two 4710 Balanced Modulators and a 4750 Control Oscillator Noise Generator.

There is included also the May 1973 Radio-Electronics article by John Simington (PAiA founder and recently unfortunately passed) titled Build A Modular Electronic Synthesizer wich provides wonderful background and support infos for the line of PAiA synth modules.

Also included are original copies of the documents for the 2720-1 Voltage Controlled Amplifier, 2720-2A Voltage Controlled Oscillator, 2720-3B Voltage Controlled Filter (Band-Pass), 2720-3L Voltage Controlled Filter (Low-Pass), 2720-4 Function Generator, 2720-5 Control Oscilator / Noise Source, 2720-7 Power Supply, 2720-8 Keyboard/Case ( and the assembly diagrams, the 2720-11 Envelope Follower/Trigger, 2720-12 InverterBuffer, and 2720-14 Sine Converter / Pulse Width Modulator. These manuals provide a great amount of context for the 4700 modules and included schematics are basic to the functions they describe. There is also a wealth of information out on the net as you'd expect detailing the internals and functions of these PAiA modules. Check out http://www.synthdiy.com/files/2008/4700ug.pdf which is a User Guide for the 4700/S synth system.

These hip PAiA pieces have come into their own recently as Doepfer, Moog, etc, modules have skyrocketed in price and the vintage analog synth community recognized in the PAiA modules the value engineering and forward thinking design John Simington employed when he created this line of analog treaures.

There are a number of great articles about this fine (very underrated, known as "Poor Man''s Buchla" in some hip synth circles) series of vintge synth modules. One article is http://www.johnnypumphandle.com/johnny/Paia/paia.htm, but the most comprehensive is the legendary http://www.musicofplexus.com/paia4700/. In this extensive photo journal essay one can see the scope and depth of the capabilities of these modules when properly handled and with only quite modest upgrades made (High quality caps, ten turn pots on teh VCOs, etc)"

MB Sound Design #2: "Project Blue Beam"

"Aliens descend :) In terms of sound design, it'll likely take years before the full potential of the MB's sound design possibilities are fully realised by the musical/sound community, what with the modulation possibilities. Even with patches like this one, I'm only scratching the surface. Sound design potential is one of the true strengths of the instrument, and one of the main motivating factors for my own purchasing the MB. There aren't many standalone monos with the same level of sound design potential; working with the MB in this style is likely the closest one can get to working with a full modular rig/setup.

Personal taste RE tone of analog monos will always be subjective (i.e. Moog/Arturia etc), but sound design on the MB will, objectively, likely remain in a league of its own for quite some time.

The included patch is quite involved. You'll initially hear microtonal drifting on the voice-like treatment of VCO 3's sine wave. The drifting works well to create the 'other-worldly' effect (check out Penderecki's music for fine acoustic examples of microtonal drift). There are numerous modulations on VCO's 1 and 2, plus an envelope on the blue noise."
