Deepmind 12 Vs Prophet 6: Why the huge price difference?
Published on Nov 8, 2018 Starsky Carr
"A look at why some synths are more expensive than others. The Prophet 6 is 3.5 x the cost of the Behringer Deepmind 12. Is one overpriced, or the other amazing value...?
From a practical perspective what are the differences and is the price difference really justified?
I'm not saying one is overpriced or the other is cheap or poor quality, I'm really trying to take a completely unbiased view of the differences.
If you can't get your hands on ether or both you may have wondered why yourself.... hopefully this can go some way to answering the question.

Sequential FOURM vs Prophet 5
video upload by Starsky Carr
"Is the Sequential FOURM effectively a "Prophet 4"? In this deep-dive comparison, I put Sequential’s compact powerhouse up against the legendary Prophet 5 to see how closely it recreates that iconic vintage DNA.
While the FORUM shares a strikingly intuitive Prophet-style interface—complete with dual oscillators, a resonant low-pass filter, and a dedicated polymod section—it also brings modern innovations to the table that the original Prophet simply can’t match.
We’ll explore the sonic character of the FORUM’s SSI chips, which act as modern recreations of the warm, fuzzy SSM chips found in the original Prophet 5 Rev 1 and Rev 2. By recreating classic factory patches side-by-side, we reveal the subtle differences in envelope behavior and modulation flexibility between these two analog beasts.
🎹 What’s Covered:
• The "Prophet 4" Factor: Comparing the interface, layout, and "familiar" feel of both synths.
• SSI vs. SSM vs. Curtis: Breaking down the filter and oscillator chips that define their warmth and grit.
• Modern Upgrades: Exploring the FORUM’s Poly Aftertouch, built-in arpeggiator, and digital clock sync.
• The Feedback Circuit: A demo of the FORUM's unique feedback loop that adds "MiniMoog-style" grit and prevents bass loss at high resonance—something the Prophet 5 famously struggles with.
• Patch Recreation: A side-by-side listening test of 8 classic patches to hear the real-world sonic differences.

Starsky Carr's Studio: Vintage & Modern Synth Setup Explained
video upload by Starsky Carr
"Welcome to a full synth studio tour — a look inside my hardware setup featuring vintage analog synths, modern wavetable instruments, modular gear and classic drum machines.
See how a mix of vintage synths, modern instruments, modular gear and drum machines all come together in one integrated setup. In this video I walk through the studio, explain how everything is connected, and show some of the instruments that regularly appear on the channel.
The studio is constantly evolving as new synths arrive, others get repaired, and different setups are tested for videos. In this walkthrough you'll see how classic gear like the Juno-60, Prophet series, Minimoog, TR-808, TR-909 and Jupiter synths sit alongside modern instruments such as the UDO Super 8, Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave, Waldorf M, Arturia PolyBrute and Roland System-8.
I also explain how everything is routed through the studio — from CV-controlled vintage synths integrated with MIDI, to the AudioFuse interface and Neve summing mixer that handle the audio side of things.
If you've ever wondered how to organise a hardware synth studio, integrate vintage CV instruments with modern DAWs, or just want to see a room full of iconic synths and drum machines, this video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the setup behind the channel.
You’ll also hear a few stories along the way — including the slightly ridiculous “six degrees of separation” link from my studio gear to Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon through the Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels soundtrack.
Whether you're into analog synthesis, wavetable synths, modular gear, or classic drum machines, this studio tour is packed with gear, ideas and inspiration.

Softube Model 80 and U-He Repro-5 are the two main contenders for the Prophet 5 Rev3 plugin crown, while the Arturia Prophet 5V is carrying the flag for the rarer Prophet 5 Rev 2. There are minor differences in the 2 models - the filter and envelope responses are different, but they all sound like Prophets.

Cherry Audio Introduces Mercury-4 - Detailed Roland Jupiter-4 Emulation
Mercury-4 🌌 | Cherry Audio video upload by Cherry Audio
"The new Cherry Audio Mercury-4 is a detailed emulation of one of the best-sounding and quirkiest polyphonic synthesizers of the late 1970's, the Roland Jupiter-4.
It’s the rarest and most sonically unique of the fabled Jupiter series, and we’ve gone to great lengths to recreate the subtle (and not-so-subtle) nuances and character of this beloved classic.
Every aspect of Mercury-4 has been expertly modeled upon a vintage Jupiter-4 originally owned by Greg Hawkes of the legendary 80’s new wave band The Cars, and played on their double-platinum 1981 album Shake It Up.
In Greg’s own words, Mercury-4 'sounds just like my old Jupiter! It’s nice to have it back.'"

History:
Left: Greg Hawkes’s Jupiter-4, atop the Prophet-5 in the center, at The Cars’ Syncro Sound Studio, during the Shake It Up sessions, 1981. (Photo courtesy of Greg Hawkes)
Originally released in 1978, the Roland Jupiter-4 synthesizer was one of the earliest instruments to combine voice-assign polyphony with digital patch storage - that is, the ability to store and recall sounds to a digital memory and recall them at the touch of a button.
The Jupiter-4 rapidly became the go-to polysynth for numerous English and European acts in the 80's including Duran Duran, Thomas Dolby, The Human League, Simple Minds, and more, and for good reason: the Jupiter-4 sounded fantastic, with a raw, raunchy tone not found in any of the other beloved Juno and Jupiter synths. Its analog oscillators have a uniquely aggressive tone quality, the built-in sub oscillator adds girth, its oddly fast and deep LFO modulation capabilities allow it to create uniquely whacked-out modular synth-like tones, and Roland's famous stereo chorus "ensemble" circuit is beautifully implemented, adding a boatload of width and dimension.

Behringer Pro 800 vs Prophet 600 // SOUNDS ONLY
video upload by Starsky Carr
"While I'm putting the finishing touches to my full comparison video here's some sounds to demo the similarities and differences between the Behringer Pro-800 and an original vintage Prophet 600 with the GLiGLi upgrade.
Simpler tones can be copied easily as the raw tone is all there in the oscillators. The filter envelope amount, sustain and cutoff work together slightly differently than the original so adding filter envelopes makes things a little more difficult, add to that the linear envelope shapes aren't the same - GliGLi updated the linear model in 2022 to reflect a more natural Prophet 5 Rev1/2 curve but this isn't in the Behringer. Plus Behringer have made the Pro-800 snappier, so the envelopes are not going to match on every occasion... not an issue in any way, every Prophet 600 with different GliGli firmware will be slightly different I imagine too... unless everyones updated to the 2022 version.
Other differences include the Poly-Mod, filter and LFO modulation ranges aren't as wide in the Behringer"

Novation Summit + Peak // Recreating Classic Vintage Patches
video upload by Starsky Carr
"Classics Vintage Patches from The Novation SUMMIT and PEAK Just a bit of fun... not meant to be identical, but I attempted to recreate some of my favourite patches on my Juno 60, Minimoog, Prophet 5, DW-8000 and OB-X8 - and it was going so well I ended up creating a soundbank.
These were selected to give a nice wide range of tones - single, dual and triple, VCO, DCO and digital oscillators
It can't do everything, obviously, but it gets really close on loads of tones - I was not expecting them to be identical but it can get close to the characters.
For this I created a few wavetables for the Summit/Peak from the DW-8000 waves and also the stacked waves from the Prophet 5. You can select multiple waves on the Prophet, but you can't on the Novation's so it was simple enough to create a wavetable to give all options.. saw+sq, saw+sq+triangles etc.

And it just so happens this also works for the Prophet VS waves. The way the samples are processed gives us all the lovely 80s musical artefacts that make the classics so special.
Here I demo the Prophet VS waves and show how to load PPG style wavetables. So ... effectively we have a Waveterm - we can load any 128 sample based wavetable that has 64 waves.,
Check out my wavetable vid for some tips on how to do that." [posted here]

Hurray... Take 5 and TEO 5 Desktop Units
video upload by Starsky Carr
TEO 5 announced here
"The Take 5 and Teo-5 from Sequential and Oberheim make fantastic desktop units. They feel like they were made for this form factor - no compromises, simply great sounding synths in a high quality enclosure. The keyboard versions may have felt lacking in keys (even though they have a great keybed) - just a bit too short for some. I found it was quite handy having one that could fit on my rack! But with these the only decision you have to make is which one is best for you.
Luckily I'm here to confuse you further (they both sound great)! The decision will be whether you prefer the Oberheim or Sequential style of VCO programming, the filters, and the X-Mod/FM. And these just so happen to be the bits I look at in this :)"
