Serge Tcherepnin - Waveshaper TV Ep. 9

Published on Mar 21, 2019 Waveshaper Media

"Support us on Patreon: http://patreon.com/waveshapertv

Here's an interview with the one and only Serge synthesizer designer, Serge Tcherepnin! Interviews with Serge are few and far between - in fact we're only aware of one print interview, from the early '80s. As far as we know, this is the only filmed interview with Serge in existence. Serge was a friend and colleague of Morton Subotnick's; Mort is the one who hired Serge onto the staff at CalArts, where he developed his synthesizer system for students to build and use. We met Serge in Paris to film with Mort for our upcoming Subotnick documentary, and after much convincing, Serge finally agreed to also give us a solo interview for Waveshaper TV!"

This is a treat. The influence of Buchla and Moog are covered by Serge Tcherepnin.

Elby Designs ED117 Wavolver II Waveshaper Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS)

"The ED117 produces a wide variety of evolving waveforms in response to an external control voltage.

Driven by a triangle wave, it can produce an output wave that continuously evolves from a triangle to an antisymmetric pulse waveshape. In addition, the section of the antisymmetric waveform that is at a zero-volt level can be replaced by an evolving series of successively folded triangular sections, somewhat in the spirit of the popular Serge Wave Multiplier.

The Wavolver II is a novel, versatile waveshaper that generates a special kind of double-pulse waveform along with an extra folded-wave section added between the pulses. It generates a wide range of timbres from a gentle sine or triangle wave to a very rich signal with multiple zero-crossings per cycle. The module can be driven by any continuously varying signal. For simplicity let's assume a tri wave at the input. The circuitry works by only passing the input signal when its amplitude (positive or negative) is above a threshold set by the pulse width control. When it's below the threshold the output signal is zero. The signal consists of steeple-shaped pulses that can be swept from narrow for high harmonic content to full width, which results in a triangle wave (pulse width and modulation controls). This represents a wider range of timbres than from the familiar rectangular pulse generators, which give a square waves at full width.

In addition to the double-pulse generator, the Wavolver II has circuitry to generate a series of evolving folded waves between the pulses. These are mixed into the output via the "fold mix" control. The folder output is available separately to allow individual processing of the double pulses and the folds.

The double-pulse signal consists of a positive pulse and a negative one, and the resulting signal has odd harmonics only. The capability to produce waves with strong, odd-only harmonics is practically never seen in classical vco/waveshaper designs. There is a wide area of timber space available here that has been largely ignored. Adding the folder output produces high-energy even harmonics in the signal's spectrum.

In the Wavolver II there are several ways to modify the basic waveforms discussed above. First, the amplitude of the second pulse can be continuously tuned from -5V (as shown above) to +5V (pulse 2 amplitude control). At full positive amplitude, the signal has two identical positive pulses, resulting in a signal at twice the frequency of the driving signal. Waves with the second harmonic stronger than the fundamental are musically useful, as some acoustic instruments (bowed strings) share this characteristic.

Another way to change the basic waveforms is to add a DC voltage offset to the input signal (input offset control and modulation). A positive offset makes the first pulse stronger and wider and at the same time it makes the second pulse weaker and narrower. Again this adds even harmonics into the output spectrum and results in some interesting timbres, especially when modulated.

Finally, the wave shape can be modulated by modulating the input waveform. There are many ways to do this, of course.

"Modulaire Maritime - Tarot La Coupe, truly unique waveshaper."

via Modulaire Maritime

Pseudo-paraphonic Waveshaper

Recently MM entered its 8th year of existence. For this occasion this very special module -Tarot « La Coupe » 🏆 is out now! This is the most complex and experiment oriented MM module to date. A true labyrinthe of timbres. It combines several wave shaping sections with voltage controlled morphing between them for a whopping amount of timbres, as well as some internal network of feedback routings from shaped waves throught frequency multiplies for some unheard sonic voices. Those are to be explored with typical oscillator’s waveforms or with all other audio. The module has CV controls over almost every parameter (even hidden ones 🗣️) although it conserves 12hp size.

From the mythic west-coast folding sounds, through tight basses, wild distortions, powerful chorus-pulse width modulated soundscapes and some colorful synth leads & pads Tarot LC can go downright to the harsh-noise territory or chiptune-like artefacts.

The additional small breakout module provides 6 individual outputs available simultaneously for some eventual complex sound designs, post processing, stereo patches, panning, etc. (although every section can be heard separately or in interaction with others through main (mix) Out (therefore the expander module is sold separately)

This Tarot carries well its name - there are many constellations to be explored finding different characters through the shuffling of its sonic deck of cards.

Details & use:

Tarot LC is rather a complex module, it is thought to be the only waveshaping module you would ever need in your rack: this module is like having 6 shapers in one module. You've probably noticed that names of some control knobs (Warp, Shape, Fold) are almost the synonyms, emanations of waveshaping techniques- that's intentional and is thought for that the user could more easily distinguish each shaping circuit separately since some controls are shared or some potentiometers have double functionality depending on the chosen mode.

The easiest way to get to know Tarot LC without reading the manual is if you have purchased the Breakaout module with separate Outs - you can just plug each Out, one by one, to see which controls are operable with corresponding circuit's output and than figure out which one is crossfaded with another thru 3-way switch (CF SWAP) giving mixed Out on the main Tarot LC module."

Salamander Modular Synth Analog Voltage Controlled Oscillator & Waveshaper

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Up for auction is a Salamander Modular Synthesizer single analogue voltage controlled oscillator and waveshaper. It is in museum quality condition and functions and tunes perfectly. Everything electronically and physically is in perfect condition. It is one of few made in San Francisco, California in the late 70's/early 1980's.

This module includes one voltage controlled analogue oscillator that is generated from an E-MU Modular VCO Sub-block and discrete components. The surrounding circuitry has been greatly expanded and the best possible parts were used in constructing the VCO and Waveshaper module by SMS. All of the knobs and switches are military grade (as in literally).

This module comes from the full SMS system that can be seen in the video below. I overtook the modular when I became the sound designer and producer for Asphodel Records/Recombinant Media Labs from Naut Humon. Nothing, and I mean nothing, sounds remotely close to what this module can do.

The bandwidth is so high that I used the SMS to modulate and generate video signals for several installations. From a tuning and musicality standpoint, there is nothing that rivals the absurdly over built quality of the system.

The buyer will have to design their own power supply to run this module. Don't miss a once in a life time opportunity to add one of the rarest synthesizer modules ever made to your modular. All the connectors are standard 1/8" which will interface directly with all Eurorack modulars and similar gear."

"A bit about the studio from which this comes from ... Asphodel Records/Studios and Recombinant Media Labs was San Francisco's cutting edge and award winning production, recording, and performance/research facility. We worked both with artists internal and external to the record label. Some of the clientele has included Academy and Grammy Award nominated M.I.A., members of Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed, Kode 9, Speedy J, Blixa Bargeld, and many many others. The facility was home to many talented professionals who were the users of the equipment we are selling."

"A versatile waveshaper designed by Ian Fritz.

The ED113 5-Pulser waveshaper produces a train of pulses whose number (and widths) are varied with a control voltage. At the lowest control voltage a single square wave is put out, whereas at the highest voltage a train of 5 pulses spanning less than half of the total wave period is produced. This produces all kinds of interesting effects!

Pittsburgh Generator and Genxpander Modules

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction - learn how to sell on eBay here

"A dual oscillator built around two triangle core, wide range, periodic waveform generators. as a multipurpose signal generator, it can provide the basis of a wide range of complex sounds ideal for tuned percussion/noise, abrasive amplitude, frequency and timbral modulation. tones, drones, textures, and drums to atonal, nintendo zipper/fart noises. this module was made for fm madness.

The genxpander is an expander module for the generator. it adds standard waveform outputs, internal fm waveform selection, and extensive waveshaping capabilities to the generator module.
the genxpander has 4 separate sections.

Waveshaper:
the waveshaper circuit uses a triangle wave and square wave from one or both of the oscillators on the generator module to create a saw wave and a pulse wave. attenuated cv control of the pulsewidth and saw shape is available. a switch for the triangle wave and a swith for the square wave determine which oscillator the seed waveforms are taken from.
selecting the same oscillator for both triangle and square will provide a clean saw wave. selecting different oscillators for the triangle and square waves will provide a very interesting modulating, saw-triangle-square type waveform.

FM wave switch:
determines the waveform used by oscillator 1 (gen1) to internally modulate oscillator 2 (gen2). the generator ships with the internal fm set to the variable waveform. the switch allows the frequency modulation waveform to be changed to a triangle wave.

Standard waveform outputs:
Separate triangle and square wave outputs for both oscillator 1 (gen1) and oscillator 2 (gen2)

Bad outputs:
An odd/even harmonic detector, frequency mixer & waveshaper. it inverts the polarity of the triangle waves based on the frquency relationship between oscillator 1 (gen1) and oscillator 2 (gen2).

Oe output:
Regular polarity oscillator 1 triangle if the differance between oscillator 1 (gen1) and oscillator 2 (gen2) is an even number. inverted polarity oscillator 1 triangle if the differance between oscillator 1 (gen1) and oscillator 2 (gen2) is an odd number.

Dif output:
Polarity of oscillator 2 triangle is changed at a frequency equal to the differance between oscillator 1 (gen1) and oscillator 2 (gen2). if oscillator 1 (gen1) and oscillator 2 (gen2) are the exact same frequency then the dif output is the same as the oscillator 2 triangle output.

size: 8hp
depth: 35mm

attaching the genxpander to the generator:
the genxpander attaches to the generator using 2 ribbon cables attached to header 1 and header 2.

header 1 connects the power and waveforms of the generator to the waveshapers and outputs of the genxpaner. the ribbon cable attaches stripe down to header 1 on both the genarator and genxpander.

header 2 controls the selection of the waveform used for the internal fm of the generator. it replaces the jumper on the back of the generator with a switch. header 2 is a single row 4 pin header on both the generator and genxpander. the outside row of the ribbon cable attaches stripe down on the generator and stripe up on the genxpander. attaching this ribbon cable incorrectly will not cause damage to either module.

the genxpander receives power from the generator through header 1. the genxpander does not attach directly to a power supply."

SERGE by Random*Source TRIPLE+ WAVESHAPER / a more detailed look / synth & guitar

video upload by BRiES

"In this video I run a guitarloop and a saw wave through the waveshaper. By adding modulation you can drastically alter the behaviour of the module. You can follow along on the scope.
Later in the video I link the three waveshaper sections and add loads of modulation (slow and audio rate) to completely mangle the original saw wave."

Hendrikson Patch Demos

Published on Aug 23, 2018 Bastl Instruments

"Hendrikson is a guitar/ instrument amplifier and an interface for
external effects processors like stomp boxes. It offers a cheaper
way to have great quality effects in your eurorack system.

0:10 REVERB FEEDBACK

Hendrikson, cinnamon VCF and a reverb pedal are in an
oscillating feedback loop. Dynamos inverted envelope follower
compensates the feedback level to prevent clipping.
Tromsos sample and hold is randomly changing cinnamons
cutoff frequency resulting in different tonal resonations.

0:56 PITCHSHIFTER+REVERB FEEDBACK

This is the previous patch without random filter modulation.
A pitch shifter is inserted in the feedback loop.
Hendriksons output volume and the pitch shifters semitone value
are tweaked by hand. The output volume starts and stops the
feedback oscillation, the semitone shift is set back and forth
between -6 and -7 semitones.

2:21 GATED DELAY

Hendriksons wet/dry crossfader is modulated by an envelope.
This controls the amount of pitch delay applied to the master.
The envelope is triggered in sync with the patch by little nerd.

2:54 VOLTAGE CONTROLLED WAVESHAPER

Hendrikson is used as a voltage controlled waveshaper.
A distorted sine wave from cinnamon is used as a sound source.
Tromso modulates the amount of fuzz applied. The modulation ranges from LFO to audio rate and hits some harmonic spots.

3:22 VOLTAGE CONTROLLED SYNCED WAVESHAPER

Hendrikson and skis control the amount of fuzz on the master
in sync with the rhythm. With the fuzz deactivated there is still
a distortion due to high signal levels going into Hendrikson.
This distortion is also voltage controllable with the crossfader CV
Input.

4:07 GATED REVERB

This is the previous patch with a reverb istead of a fuzz and no
distortion.
Hendrickson is perfect to create gated reverbs from any reverb
pedal."

Paperface 50 | Serge Origins

video uploads by Cinematic Laboratory

Playlist:

1. Paperface 50 | Serge Origins | Episode 01 | Visual Language
This is the first video of a seven episode playlist. It features the Paperface 50 'Helios' and 'Tempo di Roma' panels which are part of the 50th anniversary release and updated by Serge himself. These are the designs that started it all back in '70-71.

Serge used pre-drilled grid panels where all kinds of DIY circuits could be added. The front was made of a paper template where you could write down your labels. Commercial designs followed, where the typical flowchart symbols were used. This video tries to explain what they mean.

I will not be doing more 4U videos because this channel is focused on eurorack only, and focus is important. However, I recently committed to a lot of Serge euro modules and the Paperface started this fever. I was completely unfamiliar with Serge except for his contribution to Maths. So this is a bit like an 'origin' story and a tutorial for those who are interested in Serge. All episodes can be used to learn what the Eurorack modules have to offer.
2. Paperface 50 | Serge Origins | Episode 02 | OSC and OSC+
The Helios panel has two VCO's, named OSC and OSC+. The extended VCO also features a pulse out with PWM and three noise outputs. They have three (3!) 1V/OCT inputs, where two are attenuverted. The Sine outputs have a waveshaper CV. Simple, but amazing and really powerful for all kinds of modulation scenarios.
3. Paperface 50 | Serge Origins | Episode 03 | Smooth Stepped Generator
The SSG is one of the most versatile utilities in modern synthesis. At first glance it's just a triangle wave (smooth) and a sample/hold circuit, but it can perform a lot of different tasks. The SSG also has a modern V2, the GTO.
So this video may be of some use for new SSG and GTO owners in 4U and 3U.
4. Paperface 50 | Serge Origins | Episode 04 | Noise and Feedback
I didn't expect too much from this episode, just filtering a bit of noise, triggers and self-oscillation on the filter. But it made me understand why Serge is so often used to make feedback patches. I am aware I am only scratching a huge surface here. Feel free to share your feedback tips in the comments so we can all benefit.
5. Paperface 50 | Serge Origins | Episode 05 | The Rhythm of Rome
My borrowed Paperface 50 also features the Tempo di Roma panel, a clever classic sequencer featuring two 4-step sequencers, each with three rows of CV values (roughly equal to notes), a gate row when a stage is reached, and stage selectors that double as keys and length controls.

It also has an 8 step gate sequencer, two bidirectional temporary sequential switches and one bidirectional alternating switch. Finally it features a logic circuit that can output the Min or Max of two CV values (Peak and Through).

It may be a powerful sequencer for 1970's standards, but it's really classic and vintage in the digital 21st century. However, it's also responsible for that classic vibe you will not find on modern sequencers where everything is perfect.
6. Paperface 50 | Serge Origins | Episode 06 | Waveshaping
This episode is about the original Serge Triple Waveshaper, that can be used both in series as in parallel. They are three identical rectifiers, capable of turning basic waveforms into many different complex shapes, or turning complex shapes into more basic waveforms. Since the Helios panel doesn't have a dedicated VCA, I found a way to use a waveshaper to turn the filter into a convincing low pass gate. I don't think I've heard this trick before since most Helios videos are 'legato'. But maybe everybody knows this already :).

When I started this video I had a 'problem' with working with raw sounds and scopes. I don't want to be such a channel because it also gives the impression that I have a technical background. I don't. So I turned it into a Symphony for Orchestra and Waveshapers. In C minor. It's actually quite fun to 'score' a noisy VCO.
7. Paperface50 | Serge Origins | Episode 07 | Integration
This is the final episode of the series, where we'll go from 4U Banana to Eurorack and back. I was expecting a lot from this episode because i could finally add a quantizer and stereo effects. Sure it worked like a charm, but it also took away a lot of the magic and purety, degrading the Serge to 'just a bitg module' in a larger collective. I think I understand now why so many 4U users don't add too many bells and whistles and listen to all the little details hiding in the waves.

Wind Synth Eurorack Demo

Jeff Hopkins

"Alright... putting together my first Eurorack setup.... These Fricko modules are amazing. Here's a short demo, with a saxy-ish patch.

00:00 - Start of demo
00:48 - Low register demo
01:13 - Mid/highish register demo
01:36 - Talk through of the setup

From left to right I have:
-OWP Custom module (instrument interface and power)
-Tiptop Audio MISO (Mix Invert Scale and Offset) utility
-Fricko Blip! (Pulse waveshaper)
-Fricko Shell (odd harmonic waveshaper thing)
-Pitsburgh SV-1b (Oscillators, Filter, mixer etc)
-Fricko Splice (Filtered combiner, takes highs from one source and mixes with low from the other)"

Impressive! Some additional notes:

* it uses his non-MIDI analog wind controller (very smooth!)
* it explains his rig
* it use my Fricko modules so the emphasis is on the cohesive variation of tone over the range of notes:

# Blip! waveshaper (constant breadth waves, like Variophon),
# Shell wavershaper (gappy waveshapes whose harmonics don't monotonically decrease in level),
# Splice combiner (36db/8ve reverse crossover, to give effect found in many wind instruments).

I've made an update of the web page, showing how to configure this PCB as an ordinary Interpolating Scanner, a Tracking Generator, a Waveshaper, and a hybrid of Scanner and Waveshaper. The latter produces sounds that are less static than are common in normal waveshapers. Here's a sound sample (first dry, then thru the Scanner/Waveshaper):

It's all explained on the web page, here.
