Consonant Dissonance by John C.S. Keston
"Consonant Dissonance is a series of piano improvisations that examine how human expression in piano performance can be emphasized or contrasted by feeding the signals into a bespoke modular synthesizer designed to sample and reprocess the piano in real-time. For each piece the piano signals are handled in different ways. These include granular synthesis, looping, pitch shifting, reverse, analog filtering, delay, and reverberation, all modulated via a function generator, low frequency oscillators, and a sampling touch controller operated by the performer.
Recorded at The University of St Thomas, Schoenecker Center, Audio Studio on a Kawai RX-3 grand piano. Composed, performed, and produced by John C.S. Keston. Gratitude goes out to Alejandro Vega for engineering assistance, and Adam Krinsky for mixing and mastering consultation.
John C.S. Keston is an award winning transdisciplinary artist reimagining how music, video art, and computer science intersect. His work both questions and embraces his backgrounds in music technology, software development, and improvisation leading him toward unconventional compositions that convey a spirit of discovery and exploration through the use of graphic scores, chance and generative techniques, analog and digital synthesis, experimental sound design, signal processing, and acoustic piano. Performers are empowered to use their phonomnesis, or sonic imaginations, while contributing to his collaborative work. Keston founded the sound design resource, AudioCookbook.org, where you will find articles and documentation about his projects and research."

Ethereal ambient calm | live looping with the Stylosette Keys
video upload by vekoni and Stylophone
"Relax with this soothing, calming ambient track. Live performed simple looping with the almighty Loopy Pro and a bunch of beautiful effects.
Disclaimer: Stylophone sent this product free of charge; I wasn’t paid, and they had no input on the content.
I loved the Stylosette immediately after trying it. It looks like a toy, but the sound is fantastic, and the octave shift and adjustable vibrato makes it more capable than I thought it would be (I didn't even try the built in delay this time, but it also sounds great and can do self-oscillating madness as well).
Most people use the Stylosette through fruits, and other food like sushi and cheese (genius haha), which I might try next time, but I only wanted something simple and conductive for the octave key to play the high-pitched melody after the base loops were layered... so I used a Japanese knife. Mostly because it looks great and sits stable on the table (cutting edge idea...).
Now the usual geeky stuff:
Signal chain:
→ Stylophone Stylosette Keys through a TRS to RCA cable and a stereo to mono adapter
→ IK Multimedia iRig USB
→ iPhone with Loopy Pro as host

SPACE CRAFT: Event Set for Perseid Meteor Shower with Tangerine Dream, Steve Roach, & More
This one is in via Adam G
via https://www.spacecraftjoshuatree.com/home:
Experience the Perseid Meteor Shower
Tangerine Dream, ESG, Laraaji, Steve Roach + more
Every August, the Perseid Meteor Shower draws stargazers from around the world to witness one of nature's most spectacular annual displays.
This year is especially remarkable.
And via the Pioneer Town Gazette:
SPACE CRAFT brings two generations of experimental electronic music to Pappy & Harriet’s Outdoor Stage on Saturday, August 15. Evicshen, Victoria Shen’s performance project, opens at 6:30 p.m. with a 45-minute set of experimental sound and electronics. Tangerine Dream takes the stage at 7:45 p.m. for a two-hour set. Founded by Edgar Froese in 1967, Tangerine Dream brings nearly six decades of electronic-music history to the desert. Saturday’s sequence places Victoria Shen’s contemporary performance project alongside one of the genre’s longest-running groups, then gives the headliner two full hours. Tickets start at $110 and rise to $265 by tier. The festival is all ages, every attendee needs a ticket, and guests under 18 must attend with an adult. The peak of the Perseids coincides with the new moon, creating exceptionally dark skies and ideal viewing conditions that only occur every few years.
But there's another reason: truly dark skies are disappearing — light pollution and the rapidly growing number of satellites in orbit are forever changing how we experience stars.
You can grab tickets at https://www.spacecraftjoshuatree.com/home

Rest in Peace PENELOPE the Synth Kitty
Long time reader Adam Abraham wrote in to let me know his little synth kitty PENELOPE has passed away.

You might recognize these pics from prior posts, Odyssey Cat and KORG MS20 with KORG 35 Filter & Synth Cat.
According to Adam, she's been a synthhead by his side since day one. These little friends keep us company along our journey. She will be sorely missed.

Compilation of SPLIT Patches on the OB-X8
video upload by Adam Borseti
"Ah, the OB-X8, my most cherished synthesizer. Here's the SPLIT mode patches I've made this far, based purely on whatever I happened to be in the mood to play. Obviously these are all cover sounds, but just goes to show how versatile the OB-X8 is. The SPLIT and DOUBLE mode functions are so effortless, like a Jupiter 8, just 2 panels at the press of a button. Makes programming a breeze!"

Tintinnalogia: A 17th-century technique for generative music
video upload by Electrum Modular
"Introducing my second sequencer for the Disting NT: Tintinnalogia. This Lua script (written with Claude) is an implementation of 'change ringing.' Invented in 17C England, change ringing is essentially a procedure for ringing church bells. It’s an early example of algorithmic composition, and is also proto-minimalist in its emphasis on a fixed, deterministic process. So...perfect for music-making on the modular!
All Tintinnalogia needs is a sample player with multiple trigger inputs: eg ALM Squid Salmple, Bitbox, or Disting’s own Sample Player.
Random thought: if the number of bells could be increased to 12, the script could be a twelve-tone serialism machine!
Free download: https://github.com/expertsleepersltd/...
Sources consulted - all highly recommended:
Katherine Hunt, 'The Art of Changes: Bell-Ringing, Anagrams, and the Culture of Combination in Seventeenth-Century England,' Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (2018): connects change ringing to 'mathematical recreations' and to Early Modern ars combinatoria such as anagrams. If there was a meaning to change ringing, it was the 'exhaustion of meaning.'
Margaret Aston, Broken Idols of the English Reformation (2015): specifically, the chapter on bells.
Robert Adam Hill, 'The Reformation of the Bells in Early Modern England' (PhD thesis, 2012): dispels the assumption that bells lost their earlier, sacred meanings in the era of change ringing.
Brian Eno, 'Bells and their History,' Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture, ed. Paul D. Miller (2008). 'The same supply of metal would be made into cannon in wartime and would go back to bells after hostilities were over'

"Nymira is a standalone harmony instrument designed around the circle of fifths. Its sonic engine draws from the overtone series, offering detailed timbral control across seven individual partials. Three distinct models explore different synthesis methods; one rooted in additive FM synthesis, another in classic subtractive design, and one based on granular synthesis. Together, they provide a new, expressive way to shape rich and complex harmonic textures.
Nymira is the only instrument in the world that maps the Circle of Fifths to a physical interface. Nymira is designed with Western harmonic theory at the core, allowing you to discover beautiful chord progressions that are much harder to play on other instruments.
Like all Terraphones, Nymira is assembled by hand, and is housed in solid walnut. Underneath Nymira’s keys are Cherry MX Silent Red keyswitches that offer a clean, tactile experience. With the ability to run on four rechargeable AA batteries, Nymira lets you play anywhere. Inside Nymira are two surface transducers that turn the walnut enclosure into a speaker of its own. Playing Nymira in this mode allows you to hear its warm sonic engine played through the walls of its walnut housing. Nymira also excels in the studio. It is equipped with USB MIDI out, and a stereo 1/4" audio output. If you don’t want to use batteries, Nymira can be powered via USB-C with any device that supplies 4-17 volts.

Nymira is made by Thomas Adam Billings, the sole creator of Terraphones. Every part of Nymira is ethically sourced, assembled by hand, with solid walnut sourced and milled in the United States of America. By purchasing Nymira, you are directly funding the ongoing research and development of a new wave of natural, electroacoustic musical instruments.

Aurelia, by Terraphones
video upload by Terraphones
"Aurelia is a wind instrument that bridges acoustic expression and electronic sound. It responds to both breath and touch, translating natural, human gestures into rich melodies. Aurelia’s key layout is unique to all other wind instruments, giving you the ability to play in every major and minor key with equal ease. Aurelia was created to feel as inviting to the novice as it is deeply expressive to the professional.
Aurelia’s keys use Cherry MX Silent Red keyswitches, giving you the accuracy and speed that can be found on the most well-tuned wind instruments. Housed in a handmade, solid walnut enclosure, Aurelia has a striking visual aesthetic that also feels extremely comfortable in the hands.
Aurelia has a unique sonic engine that uses warm, analog-modeled oscillators, creating a gradient of sound qualities that work well with both acoustic and electronic musical environments.
While playing solo melodies is at Aurelia’s core, it also has a Counterpoint Mode that will harmonize with you as you play. Just choose a key, and Aurelia will figure out the rest.
Aurelia is designed for portability. It can run on four rechargeable AA batteries, and has a built-in speaker. With USB MIDI out and a 1/4" stereo audio out, Aurelia excels in studio and live performance settings as well. Aurelia can be powered via USB-C with any device that supplies 4-17 volts.
