"I played some extra layers of reverberating synth ambience on the Teenage Engineering OP-1, Kaleidoscope by Vadim Minkin processed through the Teenage Engineering EP-135 Sidekick Mixer as well as additional plate reverb and tape echo emulation in Ableton Live as I was recording in. Ableton Live was playing back a composition with Arturia Pigments, NI Reaktor ensembles (Razor, Steampipe 2), GForce Software OB-X synth plugins

Trick or treat! Here we go again with another live performance in the studio! This time it's inspired by the spirit of Halloween! And, once again, it's been captured on video by Colleen Padilla.

'First Light Over Aurora' was performed in front of my wife's parents. Colleen had suggested that they should be here for this recording because they hadn't personally experienced one of my live performances. Thankfully, they enjoyed it. And their energy in the room during the performance was inspiring. It's always a treat for me to be able to play my music for others in a live setting.

_Touch, press, transform

The new XYZ touch matrix brings performance, modulation, and navigation onto one surface.

Assign modulation with direct, color-coded feedback, swipe through presets, or watch reactive visualizers follow your playing.

Switch to Freak Control and put the sound under your fingers.

Push a Macro further, tighten the Gate, or use Spice to introduce variation.

Bipolar and vector layouts let you move between contrasting settings and blend across four corners, with pressure adding a third dimension of expression.

Room to play

49 full-size semi-weighted keys with velocity and mono aftertouch give chords, melodic lines, and two-handed performances room to breathe. Aluminum pitch and modulation wheels keep expression under your left hand.

Push every sound further

Audio-rate Filter FM from either engine adds harmonics, grit, and vocal-like textures. Dedicated Type, Wave, Timbre, and Shape controls, plus three selection shortcuts per oscillator, make sound shaping more immediate.

Six voices in stereo

Voice Panning spreads individual voices across the stereo field, adding width to chords and spatial movement to sequences.

MiniFreak 49

Three FX slots, each with a dedicated access button and 13 algorithms, cover everything from chorus and reverb to distortion and vocoder processing.

The Freak architecture

Two digital engines offer 30+ oscillator modes, with algorithms from Arturia, Mutable Instruments and Noise Engineering. Blend their sounds or use Engine 2 to process Engine 1, then shape each voice through its own resonant analog filter.

Shape every step

A 64-step sequencer and four modulation lanes keep notes and timbres in motion. Long-press a step to adjust its length and velocity on the touch matrix. Add arpeggiator ratchets and repeats, or introduce fresh variations with Spice & Dice.

Your Freak in the DAW

Included MiniFreak V brings the hardware’s sound and architecture into your DAW, with preset management and bidirectional control. The MiniFreak 49-compatible version is exclusive to registered MiniFreak 49 hardware owners.

"Michael from Synclavier gave us a quick history from the original New England Digital systems through Cameron Jones' continued development, the Arturia Synclavier V, Synclavier Go, and the current Regen hardware showing here.

Regen is based on the original Synclavier sound engine and is 12-part multi-timbral. Each timbre can contain up to 12 partials, and each partial can use additive synthesis, subtractive synthesis, samples, re-synthesised sample frames, or FM. The oscillator and modulator can both use edited harmonic content, so FM is not limited to sine-wave carriers and modulators.

The demo covered layered partials, stereo detuning, a supersaw-style subtractive layer, and direct sampling from a USB microphone. The sampling workflow includes pitch detection, normalisation, auto-start, manual stop, looping, and conversion into additive synthesis frames.

Regen is shipping at $2,499 USD.

The Knob controller is $349 USD, and the combo kit is $2,749 USD.

PSV-IO is due in Q1 2027 and adds audio I/O with R2R ladder DAC outputs.

The Filternator from Kanawha Music & Art - vintage-inspired resonator

"We look at the Filternator from Kanawha Music and Art, a Eurorack module designed to recreate the sound and behavior of vintage high-Q filters or resonators, like those found in instruments like the Solovox. It's circuit is based on capacitors and inductors, which can be switched on and off to change the frequency and resonance of the module. It is also passive and doesn't require any power.

We take a close look at its behavior with a controlled oscillator signal from our trusty Arturia MiniBrute 2, including CV-based mix modulation. We then try it out with an electronic organ sound from our Cherry Audio Blue3.
