BROOKLYN, NY — The Brooklyn Synth & Pedal Expo returns October ‎17–18, transforming a 7,000-square-foot Greenpoint warehouse into an immersive playground for electronic music creators.

Following up in similar fashion to the Frank Zappa Synclavier video, I wanted to tell a little story about Keith Emerson and the GX-1. Emerson Lake and Palmer are probably names you know, but Keith on his own is known to many synth and keyboard players/enthusiasts. I thought I’d tell a little story about Keith’s GX-1, and possibly a little about how its existence and where we are today collide in a strange way almost 50 years later. Just another FYI. Lately I picked up another synth... yeah, GAS hits hard 😅 My first jam with the Gray Meanie! I still remember loading up Arturia's ARP 2600 emulation years ago and thinking, "what is this shit?" I didn't understand anything back then. I gave up on it pretty quickly and forgot all about it. Later, I found out through deadmau5's MasterClass that it was the synth behind R2-D2's voice, which got me interested again... but only for a while.

Fast forward to now, I finally bought one and decided it's time to actually learn it. I think it'll be a great addition to my semi-modular setup. I'm really enjoying it so far! Behringer did a solid job with this one: the leds looks great, feels really well built, and works really well with my korg sequencer.

Anyway... hope you find this little noodling session interesting! 🤘🏻

4. Behringer 2600 Gray Meanie | Noodling Session

Gray Meanie stuff... I really need to learn this synth, feeling quite lost while jamming, so yeah... This isn't even a jam, it's just a noodling session, trying things out with the Korg SQ-64...

5. Paraphonic mode on Behringer 2600 | Noodling Session

First time using the 2600 in duo mode. I used the Arturia MicroBrute strictly as a keyboard controller, there's no sound coming from it here. The whole thing is just a raw jam with a many mistakes, but I was having a blast. I really love how the 2600 sounds as a paraphonic synth and I was completely lost in the zone while noodling...

The Strangest, Most Interesting Synth He's Played This Year (Morphor Echon6)

"The Morphor Echon6 is the world's first analog modal polysynth — a genuine departure from the wall of subtractive synths flooding the market right now. In this review and demo I dig into its Karplus-Strong-based exciter and resonator, six voices you can split into six independent monosynths, and a modulation system so intuitive it doesn't need a menu. Full raw demo at the end so you can hear it completely unprocessed.

WHAT IS MODAL SYNTHESIS?
Modal synthesis uses a Karplus-Strong oscillator — an exciter (like a pluck, bow, or hammer) run through a resonator (like a string or instrument body) — to fake physical, plucked/struck sounds. First proposed by Kevin Karplus and Alexander Strong back in 1982, you'll recognise the concept from modules like Mutable Instruments Plaits, Rings and Braids, and digital oscillators in synths like the Arturia MiniFreak and Korg Minilogue XD. The Echon6 takes that same idea and builds it entirely in analog circuitry — as far as I know, the first synth to pull that off.

MY TAKE
The Echon6 is a genuinely fresh alternative to the current glut of subtractive synths — your Jupiters, Junos, Prophets, and OB-style clones. It felt natural within minutes, the modulation is some of the cleverest I've used on any hardware synth, and the build quality is excellent. Compared to the Erica Synths Steampipe (digital modal synthesis), the Echon6 is easier to learn, while the Steampipe can get more chaotic, faster, thanks to its distortion and reverb. Both are worth a look if experimental modal synthesis is your thing — but the Echon6 gets a big thumbs up from me.

"Its been a long time with out my friend the Vermona Perfourmer. Pulled it out and decided to share some music. The OP-XY is sending a generative sequence. OP-1 Field recorded a few bars of this and slowed down by 50 percent for a pad. FX are the new Slate & Ash Halo, Arturia Ocean Reverb, and a new Reverb called REVERSIDE (former designers of 2c audio Ather i believe)."

Erica Synths and Moritz Klein DIY Compressor module.

"An impression of the Erica Synths and Moritz Klein Compressor module. This is the most fantastic module in My Modular. The compressor works great and the Sidechaining input makes it a very valuable module.

The module is a great module to make with the explanation of Moritz. Very nice done.

As Reverb I use also a Spring Reverb from Doepfer.

All is synced from the Arturia Drumbrute to the 960 sequencer. The Sidechain comes from the Rim shot of the Drumbrute which triggers the Sidechain input of the Compressor.
