Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave — The COMPLETE Review (Every Feature Explored)

video upload by Scott's Synth Stuff

"The Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave is a 24-voice wavetable synthesizer with real analog filters, three oscillators per voice, and a 6-stage wave envelope that can independently sweep each oscillator through 64-position wavetables. It's built as a modern successor to the PPG Wave 2.2 and 2.3, carrying the original PPG wavetables alongside 56 high-resolution modern wavetables, analog-modeled waveforms, and — as of OS 1.8 — a built-in sampler. In this review, I go through every major feature of the 3rd Wave in detail: the four oscillator types (PPG legacy, modern user wavetables, analog-modeled, and samples), the dual filter architecture (4-pole analog low-pass plus 2-pole zero-delay state-variable), all four envelopes, the four LFOs, the 16-slot modulation matrix, 11 built-in effects, the arpeggiator, the pattern-based sequencer with parameter automation, 4-part multitimbral layering and splits, the Wave Maker custom wavetable tool (including Serum wavetable import), unison with chord memory, MPE support, and more.

Whether you're considering buying one, comparing it to other hardware wavetable synths like the Waldorf Iridium, Modal Cobalt, or ASM Hydrasynth, or just curious what a modern PPG-inspired instrument sounds like in 2025/2026, this is the full picture. I cover every section of the signal chain with sound demos, explain what makes the wave envelope system unique, show how to build patches from scratch, and give my honest take on where the 3rd Wave excels and where it falls short. Timestamps for every section are below — jump to whatever interests you."

The Crow Hill Company Introduces the THE SH*T SYNTH

The Sh*t Synth - Walkthrough video upload by CROW HILL XTRAS

Press release follows:

The Crow Hill Company turns to extensive and rare collection to turn out THE SH*T SYNTH as compendium of 48 circuit-, wave- and sample-bent instruments

EDINBURGH, UK: The Crow Hill Company is proud to turn to its own extensive and rare collection of hardware to turn out THE SH*T SYNTH — available as a compendium of 48 circuit-, wave- and sample-bent instruments inspired by some of the Edinburgh-based enterprise’s eclectic musical favourites (spanning the likes of Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Joe Maus, Jon Brion, Laurie Spiegel, Radiohead, Throbbing Gristle, and Yazoo) to create something that they collectively ask: is it just shit or ‘the shit’? — as of April 7…

Whatever way anyone chooses to read into the titling of THE SH*T SYNTH as the latest entry into The Crow Hill’s ongoing ORIGINS series of sample-based virtual instrument plug-ins, one thing is for sure: it readily represents a broad selection of three categories of 16 workhorse instruments each, effectively wrapped up into a single plug-in designed to bring a cohesive approach to making music more edgy, lo-fi, retro, and — swimming against the technological tide of so-called progress — decidedly AI (Artificial Intelligence) slop-free. From pianos to strings, plucks, beeps, bass, and pads, the compendium that is THE SH*T SYNTH has been lovingly sculpted by the Edinburgh-based enterprise’s media composer and ‘samplist-in-residence’ Christian Henson to take the hassle out of making existing sounds less refined, catering to those looking for an entirely new bank of Mellotron-style sounds as well as synths that have been long forgotten — for good reason, too!

KONSTRUKT-8 is an expressive live performance instrument and sound design tool – plus a hands-on deep dive into electronic circuit design. Each of its eight DIY modules comes with a detailed build guide and can be explored on a breadboard first, letting you trace every circuit design decision before assembling the final instrument.

KONSTRUKT-8 includes four fully analog drum voices:

• Kick Drum. A resonant bridged-T network produces deep, punchy kicks.

• Snare Drum. A burst of filtered transistor noise layered over a tuned resonator creates a crisp snap.

• Hi-Hat. Six dissonant square-wave oscillators are mixed, filtered, and overdriven to create metallic percussion.

• FM Drum. Two interacting oscillators form a versatile percussion voice capable of kicks, toms, bells, and cymbal-like sounds.

A four-channel drum sequencer lets you tap in rhythms that loop automatically. Under the hood, shift registers store the pattern as a circular sequence of binary data.

All voices feed into a four-channel mixer with per-channel FX sends and a master insert, allowing you to shape the entire beat with external effects or the built-in distortion and compressor.

Two effects modules complete the system: an analog bucket-brigade delay (BBD) with flanger and delay modes, plus a diode-based compressor with sidechain capability.

Bad Gear - He tried his best to HATE IT

video upload by AudioPilz

[Funny side note: I just saw that episode of Myth Busters with the truck plowing through cars, just yesterday.]

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. There are a few learnings to be taken from years of ploughing through music production gear like an 80s rock band shopping in a liquor store: don’t believe the hype, everything has been done before and never trust a stylish instrument sold with the promise to give you all you need in a compact form factor without compromising sound quality and usability.

Today we are going to talk about Dirtywave M8. This hardware tracker and mini DAW comes with more red flags than the average dating app experience like a cult-like following, a Game Boy-inspired workflow and believe me - I tried my best to hate it.

FUTURE SOUND SYSTEMS CRIC

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this eBay listing

"Cric is a fully-analogue patchable synthesiser, designed to showcase our approach and attitude towards subtractive sound synthesis. It is not a clone or derivative of a pre-existing musical instrument, nor is it simply our Eurorack modules cased up in a box. Whilst some of Cric's functionality descends directly from our experience in designing modular synthesiser components, it has been designed as a fully fledged, standalone instrument, which can easily be introduced into an existing electronic music studio, or even form the heart of an entirely new set-up.

Rock solid voltage-controlled oscillators give the user both pitch precision and FM flexibility. A comprehensive filter section affords timbral sculpting from basic filtering to total transformation of incoming tones. Four cyclical function generators can be used as envelopes, LFOs or even audible VCOs. Pin matrix patching allows for the synthesiser to be configured as a standard triple-VCO subtractive synth, or a paraphonic synth, or a drum machine, or a noise box, and so the list goes on. Four inputs and outputs allow for audio processing, external CV control, feedback routing and more - there's even a microphone pre-amp on input 1. Steel casing, Mirrl -clad HIMACS end-cheeks and hand assembly and testing ensure a rugged and durable build quality.

Technical specifications:

Oscillators : Three SSI2131-based analogue VCOs in Recombination configuration, white noise generator
Filter : SSI2164-based 18dB/octave state-mixable analogue VCF, with wave-folding, based on the Timbral Sculptor
Dynamics : SSI2164-based VCAs present in DNA oscillators, filter section and as a standalone VCA
Modulation : Sample and hold + four cyclical function generators offering AD and ASD envelope configuation, cycle mode, and slope and pulse sources
Routing : 24 source x 32 destination active pin matrix allowing for splitting and summing of all signals
I/O : Four DC-coupled inputs and outputs for multi-channel audio and CV use. Microphone pre-amplifier assigned to In 1. Headphone amplifier on Out 1
Dimensions : 550 x 310 x 80 mm, 5.3 kg

Waldorf M 1.11 Update Adds Varysaw VA Oscillator, CS80 Based Oscillator, Extensive FM & More

You can find the update here

Details form the release doc follows:

Disclaimer: This is an unofficial add-on to the M user manual, describing some of extra features added from firmware 1.05 up to firmware 1.11. This add-on also covers some complex aspects of the Multi Mode, which remains somewhat unusual.

Author: Vladi Salnikov aka VladiS.

Algorithms of FW version 1.11:

Varysaw: A VA oscillator ranging from SAW through PULSE to TRI.

Wave (red encoder): Mixes from 0 to 31 from SAW to PULSE; 32 is pure PULSE, and 33 to 63 mixesfrom PULSE to TRI.

Meta parameter: Pulse width for PULSE, adjustable from 5% to 95%.

CSAW: A famous Yamaha CS-80 saw oscillator with mutation towards a parabolic oscillator.

Wave : Controls the amplitude of the “step” component of the saw wave.

Meta parameter: Mixes between this saw wave and the parabolic saw wave.

Waveshpr: A SAW to TRI oscillator fed into a mild waveshaper.

Wave : 0 is pure SAW, 1-62 mixes between SAW and TRI, and 63 is pure TRI.

Meta parameter: Depth of the waveshaper.

TriplSaw: A stack of three SAW oscillators; two are detuned slightly higher and lower than the third.

Wave : Controls the amplitude of the “central” SAW oscillator relative to the two “side” SAWs.

Meta parameter: Detuning factor, from 0 to maximum detune.

S/T Fold: A SIN wave folding oscillator that folds the chosen crossmixed wave between SIN and TRI waves.

Wave : 0 is pure SIN, 1-62 mixes between SIN and TRI, and 63 is pure TRI.

Meta parameter: Folding depth.

FM 2 OP: Classic simple two-operator FM synthesis. OP1 (modulator) generates a sine wave that modulates the phase of OP2 (carrier). Both operators generate sinewaves; the algorithm's output is the carrier signal.

Wave: Maps values from 0 to 63 to harmonics ratios of 1 to 8 in stepped increments.

Meta parameter: Amount of phase modulation applied to the carrier.

Fors Introduces Junior 4-bit Wavetable Synth 【 VST + AU + CLAP 】

video upload by Fors

"Get Junior: https://fors.fm/junior

VST3 + CLAP + AUv2 for macOS, Windows & Linux

Junior is a 4-bit wavetable synthesizer based on the soundchip of our favorite vintage handheld video game console, bringing the raw and primitive tones of the original into present day.

All sounds in this video are 100% made with Junior without effects."

Junior – Walkthrough

video upload by Fors

"Junior is a 4-bit wavetable synthesizer based on the soundchip of our favorite vintage handheld video game console, bringing the raw and primitive tones of the original into present day.

Not only is Junior the perfect lo-bit playground but also a completely unapologetic synthesizer with a unique palette that holds a very special place in many of our hearts. Perhaps it can find its way into yours too.

Based on the limitations and characteristics of the Nintendo Game Boy™ soundchip, Junior emits raw and harmonically rich 4-bit values that will cut through anything. From 0 to 15, there is nothing more and nothing less.

The tone generator in Junior plays back a custom wave buffer of 32 4-bit values which gets transformed by different sound shaping controls. Paired with a 7-bit LFSR noise generator, they form the perfect lo-bit palette.

Junior has four flexible modulators inspired by modulation sequencers often used in trackers (LSDj, Defmon, M8 ..) called Tables. The 16-step modulation table in Junior can be configured as an LFO, envelope, arpeggiator, MIDI input mapper and more.

While Junior simulates the Game Boy™ sound, it's not a strict emulation by design. It expands upon the original capabilities with a modern feature-set and control while staying true to the original. The balance between accuracy and fun is just right.

The Fancyyyyy K-Accumulator - A Complex Oscillator Made of Complex Oscillators 👽

K-ACCUMULATOR - 21st Century Complex Oscillator video upload by Fancyyyyy Synthesis

Note, this appears to be the first Fancyyyyy post on the site. :)

Currently exclusive to Perfect Circuit

"The Fancyyyyy K-Accumulator is a revolutionary stereo complex oscillator that combines cutting-edge synthesis techniques in an intuitive, hands-on architecture inspired by classic complex oscillators. Designed in collaboration with Grrrwaaa aka Graham Wakefield, creator of Max/MSP's gen~ platform, fans of experimental timbres and novel synthesis techniques are right to celebrate K-Accumulator's emergence into the Eurorack landscape. Seamlessly combining pulsar synthesis, phase modulation, and complex 3D waveshaping, K-Accumulator pairs its modulation and carrier oscillator pairs with an onboard function generator, pattern generator, and flexible root frequency quantization and manipulation, providing fruitful terrain for exploring captivating timbres in systems of any size.

Starting from a core sine and cosine wave, K-Accumulator provides an innovative morphing matrix architecture which progressively remaps panel controls to waveshaping positions for the carrier and modulator oscillator section. Expand tones with complex harmonic wavefolding, blended frequency shifting, and harmonic stretching. Shape tones into newly mangled forms with formant synthesis, sync damping, and asymmetric phase modulation, or invite chaotic movement and surprise with damped cross phase modulation and damped self-feedback. Even the onboard function generator can sing, enabling audio rates for pulsar synthesis that can be operated independently from the main oscillator. Despite the PhD in DSP you might need to fully understand K-Accumulator's synthesis engine, the morphing matrix architecture allows these many manipulations to be smoothly and seamlessly explored through intuitive manual control.

Even further possibilities abound when employing K-Accumulators twenty-three patchable points of external signal integration, with most primary CV inputs featuring dedicated attenuverters for precision control. In addition to CV control over the frequency, shift, depth, morph, and shape controls, the primary oscillator in K-Accumulator offers CV inputs for thru-zero phase modulation, damped/pulsar control, and an external input which can be used as an external sync source or for pitch-tracking an external source to use K-Accumulator to harmonize with external sources. Its outputs offer both the sine and cosine waves, creating unique stereo space through the phase differences on each output as it is manipulated by the waveshaping engine. Control root frequency for the oscillator section, function generator, or both, with both 12-TET and Just Intonated quantization, multiple scales of frequency control, and a dedicated detune control in the modulation oscillator for inharmonic applications.

At the left side of K-Accumulator, a highly flexible function generator is onboard for additional modulation or audio sources. Multiple unique internal trigger modes, looping capability for LFO and audio rate oscillation, thru-zero FM, and onboard waveshaping make this a potent source of signal manipulation for either K-Accumulator itself or anywhere in your system. To the right of the function generator, a Delta-Sigma pattern generator enables stepped and smooth pseudo-random pattern modulation, providing an onboard sequencer for root frequency, or any other parameter. With its immensely capable and unique synthesis engine alongside flexible and creative onboard modulation sources, Fancyyyy's K-Accumulator offers a new vision of complex oscillation for contemporary modular synthesis, translating vanguard digital signal processing into a familiar form factor for deep sonic exploration, intuitive skronking, and new musical forms yet unheard."

100 Oberheim Matrix 12 URBANEK Patches BY Peter Urbanek

video upload by Really Nice Audio

"After the last set of whacky sounds [posted here] I wanted to document some more 'classic' Matrix 12 vibes. I found this great bank by Peter Urbanek.

From the .txt

PATCHES BY PETER URBANEK (free)
Reviewed by Mike Metlay

Peter's patches tend to be organized in sets, with several subtle variations on a theme, and named accordingly: VOICE 1.1, VOICE 1.2, etc. It seems that when a patch deviates enough from the basic form, he gives it a name of its own and groups it after the others of its ilk. For this reason, Peter's patch tape is organized quite neatly, making it easy to audition all of a particular type of patch. Heavy use is made of both Levers, both Pedals, Pressure, Velocity, and Release Velocity on many patches, for effects ranging from vibrato to ENV shape changes and resonant sweeps on note attacks. It should be noted by all that to Peter, "vibrato" means everything from triangle-wave warbles to deep noise-wave growls. His Multi Patch setups are meaningless: they're left over from the factory patch tape. Blanking them would've been nice.

In contrast to the previous set, the patches here bear little resemblance to the sounds after which they're named. Each sound group, like VOICE, STRIN, CHURCH, etc., appears to describe the general character of a sound rather than it's true intent. Peter seems to enjoy the "analog synthesis for its own sake" approach to programming; he eschews realism in favor of timbre.

And what timbres-thundering basses, blasting church organs that seem to belong to any church I've ever heard of, bizarre sound effects (though not on the level of the next tape reviewed) with random LFOS, rich filtered string pads ... all heavily overlaid with a grimy analog crunch that threatens to bury the listener. There are a few slightly altered factory patches as well, but these have also fallen to Peter's grim analog touch.

In fact, there aren't that many different kinds of sounds on this tape; it has a definite "one flavor" feel to it throughout, and that flavor doesn't lend itself to realism, so if you're looking for variety or realistic sounds, look elsewhere. But if you want to learn exactly why no digital synth can cross an Xpander and live, these sounds would be a fine place to start."

Echograin Tranzwave 2 Software Synthesizer Inspired by the Ensoniq Fizmo

video uploads by Echograin

video upload by AMAZONA Music Mag

via Echograin

Introducing Tranzwave, a powerful wavetable Synthesizer, inspired by an unsung hero from the late 90’s: The Ensoniq Fizmo.

The flexible modulation engine, coupled with creative editing and randomization features, simplifies the creation of new, innovative sounds. Tranzwave brings all the wavetables from the Fizmo into the modern age for new creative explorations. With its user-friendly interface, Tranzwave provides complete control over wavetable and effect controls, making the creation of new sounds both fun and easy.

Tranzwave – A Tribute to Fizmo’s DNA

In the late 1990s Ensoniq pioneered “Transwaves”, a unique form of wavetable synthesis notably featured in their Fizmo synthesizer. Unlike earlier forms of wavetable synthesis, which could sometimes produce more static or stepped sounds, Ensoniq’s technology facilitated fluid transitions between different waveforms within a wavetable.
This innovation led to the creation of evolving, dynamic soundscapes. Ensoniq’s approach allowed for a more seamless and organic morphing of sounds, enabling musicians to craft rich, textured audio experiences that changed over time. This method offered a fresh and novel way to explore sonic possibilities, distinguishing it from the more digital and discrete transitions of previous wavetable synthesizers like the PPG Wave. Although the Ensoniq Fizmo, which utilized Transwaves, did not achieve widespread fame, its distinctive approach to wavetable synthesis marked a significant development in the evolution of electronic sound and influenced modern synthesis techniques.

Tranzwave brings this older, unique wavetable concept, known as Transwaves, into the modern era of music production. By sampling each frame of these Transwaves, Tranzwave offers a rich and dynamic sonic palette that captures the essence of these early digital synthesizers. It’s akin to having a vast library of colors and shades at your disposal, offering endless possibilities for creating new and innovative sounds.

"Distortion has been an essential tool for my music making for most of my life, whether that was playing guitar, working with synths in amps, re amping synths and production stems through pedal FX or smashing mixers, tape machines and other gear I've always found it fascinating and with the options to CV control distortion in modular it's even better!

Head Banger from Setonix Synth & Robots Are Red takes the Swedish Death Metal sound of the Boss Heavy Metal pedal, heavily re vamps it for a wide range of input sources, adds CV control and a creative feedback path and presents itself in Eurorack form. While the name and styling lean on the metal heritage it's been interesting to find a subtler warmth and crunch, synths in tube amp like tones and blown out noisy cassette style grunge for more ambient music.

"How is this even possible? The sounds of 80’s new wave, techno, dance and electronic in drum kit form all in their original boxes. 😱

Vintage 1980’s Tama Techstar analog drum synthesizer system.

Complete TS-500 drum kit/pads, TS-305 6 voice analog synthesizer, and I do have TDA-60 amplifier available but not included in this auction.

A rare opportunity to own a distinct analog sound that’s totally functional and complete. In most other cases, these would be highly used and abused.

Per the previous owner, these sat in the boxes for the past couple decades. In excellent condition and don’t look to have much heavy play time if any at all.

Check out the video but keep in mind I’m not a drummer! But you can be, with headphones too! 😎

These are vintage and like all vintage gear expect some wear and scuffs associated with age."
