Turning A Turntable Into A Sampler

video upload by HAINBACH

"When I first heard of the existence of the rare MIDI controlled turntables VESTAX made, the super rare Controller One namely, I was amazed. A turntable that can can be played with a keyboard? I went on a search for a cheaper alternative to the rare and expensive Controller 1 (6000EUR, only 100-110 made), which luckily worked out. While the turntable was en route from Japan, I commissioned http://darkroom.lt to make dubplates for me. On these special one-off vinyl records I had put sounds I created in my studio that I thought would work well in a track together. I had no idea if it would all work out, and the result surprised me."

V.A.I. 73 : Antonelli Syntorgan 2445 / FBT R-21 Leslie Simulator

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Antonelli Syntorgan 2445.
Lovely and quirky machine with a mono synth and high / low pass filter controls.
It came with legs, preset overlays for a handful of sounds, and a songbook.
There’s a very simple drum machine and auto bass/chords on board as well.
The Antonelli Syntorgan 2445 is actually fun to play and compose with, the two filter types really save this toy keyboard and elevates it beyond Bontempi standards.
Marketed for beginners and kids, it was apparently manufactured by Siel - it’s basically a slimmed down and tinny sounding Siel Cruise : a mono section and a poly section.
On the Syntorgan you can route the poly section through the mono filter, plus it has a kind of hidden two octave bass preset, a drum machine and auto-bass and auto-chord section too.
We used some external effects, this machine really needs it :
the Tekson Fading pedal for phasing the drums, then an odd and crazy rare FBT Dual Channel Equalizer rack-unit for some color, and a Montarbo Analog Delay (actually digital) with a broken chip that somehow distorts things wonderfully.
On some sounds we also pulled out our FBT R-21 Leslie simulator, an optical rack device based around a spinning disc, it looks almost like a tape echo.

Antonelli Syntorgan Specs:
Separate and combinable Poly and mono sections
High and low pass filters
Drum machine with presets
Bass preset sound
Auto bass and chord section
One finger mode."

Blue Lantern Lucky 7 - 24db SH01 Low Pass VCF/VCA // Full Walkthrough and Demo

video upload by Robots Are Red

Introducing Lucky 7 by Blue Lantern Modules. This is a 16hp 24db Low Pass filter based on the famous Roland SH01 filter from 1978. Along with the two input filter, this module includes a built in OTA based VCA with two CV inputs, authentic headphone feedback circuit, two subharmonics generators, built in noise, and a good handful of CV inputs.
Just patch a VCO and an Envelope and you are ready to go!

In the video we take a deep dive into each knob and CV input, listen to the filter in various settings, and even look at some feedback self-patching with excellent results.

Model: BLM Lucky 7
Width 16hp
Current: +69mA -68mA
PCB Stack: 1 Level, Skiff compatible.

Module type: analog filter, sub harmonic generator, internal vca, white noise generator, (self) oscillator

What does this do?

This particular product is my take on the vintage analog filter found on the Roland SH1 Keyboard. Some key differences from the original
are low end correction on the resonance path (audio level would drop), with voltage control, and I used a modern exponential converter.

The bass frequency will retain nicely on this modern version. No more audio level drop. The 'RCV' can be used to simulate Band Pass sounding tones when used with audio rate external sources..

I also included the famous feedback patch that lucky users of the vintage keyboard would do. Users would patch from the headphone output back into the filter external input.
I duplicated the original discrete headphone circuity and internally patched it for you. All you have to do is turn it up with the 'FBK' knob. Small settings go a long way with this.
It can get strange with too much feedback, in a good way.

24db Low Pass Filter.

Features:

(2) Possible External Audio inputs.
(1) White Noise Generator, Switch Jack internally patched to AIN2 input jack.
(2) Sub Hamronic Generators taken from the SH101 circuitry. Both are accessible by level knobs.
(1) Voltage Controlled Rez, with auto low end level correction.
(1) 1V per octave 'Expo' input.
(1) Linear FM input. Best used during Filter Self Oscilation duties.
(1) Bi-polar FM Attenuinverter. Best used with an external envelope generator.
(1) Internal VCA with 2 possible CV inputs. VCA knob is a manual offset to 'open' the VCA.

What you get:
Mixer +WhiteNoiseGen +Subharmonics +VCF +VCA

All you need is a vco, and envelope generator to complete a compact analog mono voice.

If this was literally your first and only module, it is possible to make sound and noise for entertainment.

Red Waves by Doug Lynner

Serge compositions. You can find videos for this release previously posted here. Patch sheet below.

"'Red Waves' is comprised of two groups of pieces, WAD: Trio for Richard Driskell, and, 5 Solos for Simple Slopes.

Though they were recorded about two years apart and did not share the same compositional intents, both pieces share something important about them; they both intentionally use a small module compliment, a panel or less worth, and use the same patch for each of their segments.

In the case of WAD: Trio for Richard Driskell these “limitations” were used to highlight my interactions with a particular module, the Wilson Analog Delay (WAD).

In the case of 5 Solos for Simple Slopes the limitations were imposed to make the point that creativity and musicality can flourish on a small system and indeed can be enhanced by the experience, especially if you have a large system that you have established a workflow for.

For me, the 'Small Modular Aesthetic,' the term I use for this part of my work, is a healthy change-up that I find refreshing and immediate. To use only a single simple patch for multiple pieces extends this even further by necessitating a deeper exploration to find multiple unique voices from it.

For me music made in this way is raw and responsive and relates directly to the real situation for many new synthesists. I hope that Red Waves represents that.

One other thing that all of the pieces on Red Waves have in common is a video recording of each of the 8 performance. The videos of WAD: Trio for Richard Driskell have already been published and can be found on my Youtube channel. I have one of the videos for 5 Solos for Simple Slopes ready and will complete the others in the coming week. Keep an eye out for them!
