4 vids on triggering synths live with drumkits

via Stuff Linear/Amsterdam

"I have found some nice examples of the incorporation of synths and drumming.
In all the videos the drums trigger envelopes and/or drive the clock.
Mostly i notice people using the very versatile Nord Modulars for this kind of stuff.

This one is all analogue with Juno and Doepfer, by Analogueeak (he has several vids up, check m out)

YouTube via analogueak. [You might remember this one from this post.]

This one is starring Andre Duracell playing the BubbleBobble Theme. He allso has several vids up. I chose this one because you see a bit of gear.
He uses the Nord G2 Engine and a laptop.

ARP Sequencer 1611

via this auction
"Lots of features make it stand out against other analog sequencers. For example the random function is interesting, it is able to skip steps(!), there are 3 gate busses(!), it can run at audio speed for use as a wave shaper(!), run as 1x16 steps or 2x8 steps, etc."

Moog 1150 Ribbon Controller

via this auction

"Original Moog Ribbon Controller. This fits nicely on your Minimoog (same width, there is a youtube video where you can see it on the mini above the keyboard). As you can see on the instruction sheet there are 2 modes: Mini and Sonic Six. It can probably be used for other synths too. It is powered by the Moog accessory output on the synth. Outputs for Pitch, S-trig and Aux control."

Korg MS-03 Pitch to CV & Ring Modulator

via this auction

"One of the rarer Signal processing boxes from the Korg MS-range. If you have MS-20, MS-10, MS-50, SQ-10 etc. then this would fit nicely. It can also be used in other setups as it features both V?Hz as wel as V/Oct outputs! Hook up your guitar or flute and play your synth with it... This one has been modified and now also has an internal ring modulator with signal mixer on the front."

Syntecno TeeBee mk3 Tb-303 clone 4x CV converter

via this auction
"As said the best sounding tb-303 clone and it has some other uses too. 4 cv/gate outputs for controling your vintage analog synths. Both v/oct AND v/hz CV, positive AND negative gate etc. so you can control moog, arp, roland as well as yamaha, korg etc. synths at the same time! There is a nice ring modulator and you can use it as a filter bank and route external audio thru its filters... Some handy midi features too, 2 midi merge inputs and a Din-sync output for syncing other gear like tr-808, tr-606 etc."

Roland MD-8 MD8 - Original Roland Juno/Jupiter Midi-DCB

via this auction

"Roland MD-8 for controling synthesizers with DCB like the Juno60 and most Jupiter8's. Manual included. This is a very nice MD-8, almost like new(!). Also included are a DCB cable and Roland power cable."

Roland JSQ-60 Sequencer for Juno-60 Jupiter-8

via this auction

"The JSQ-60 is a polyphonic sequencer connectable with DCB synthesizers such as the JUNO-60 or the JUPITER-8.
Due to its large memory capacity of approximately 2,000 notes, the JSQ-60 can memorize a complete musical composition . The JSQ-60 can also memorize changes in the patch memory of the JUNO-60. The JSQ-60 is capable of both real-time and single-step loading. In the real-time mode, all performances played by the keyboard are loaded. And in the single step mode, the pitch of each note is loaded in each step. While listening to previously loaded per formances, you can overdub up to three times in real time. Shifting the JUNO-60's patch memory and starting/stopping the JSQ-60 can be controlled by a DP-2 pedal switch. A cassette interface is provided for limitless data storage. Two Sync out jacks are provided to sync with devices such as the TR-606 DRUMATIX or TB-303 BASS LINE."

Roland Vocoder Plus VP-330

via this auction

"Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus synthesizer. This instrument was only produced between 1979-80 and features the most otherworldly, goose bump inducing string section, choir, and human-voice sounds. Incredibly warm, rich and harmonic, and similar to that of a Mellotron (Tony Banks of Genesis replaced his onstage with a VP-330). It was also famously used by Vangelis for the 'Blade Runner' soundtrack. A much desired instrument possibly due to it sounding like little else. If it is ultimate lushness you seek, look no further. This is a MK1 version with the rocker switches for a nice vintage feeling.

Just a heads up, but a few auction posts came in. It looks like we are on another run. Enjoy the pics and remember to just skip by posts that don't interest you. A lot of this is just eye candy. "

ÉuCuE xxvii - Jan. 2009 - "Plugged"

"Concordia University’s Music Department (Electroacoustic Studies) and Concordia Electroacoustic Studies Student Association (CESSA) are happy to announce EuCuE "Plugged" - a series of six electroacoustic and multimedia concerts taking place between 28 and 30 of January 2009."

I'm obviously a bit late posting this, so my sincere apologies. I like to keep posts focused on specific synths vs. synths in general and I completely missed this one. That said there are still performances tomorrow including Alessandro Cortini (Blindoldfreak, formerly NIN) and his Buchla 200e. You can find more info on the event here.

Note there will be follow up concerts for Blindoldfreak on Feb 1st in Québec, 2nd in Ottawa and 7th in Montréal. Kakihara 079 of Ögenix will be playing with the system pictured in this post (Sid the cat), with slight module changes (AFGs, Frequensteiner, less Doepfer, etc), Max MSP and a Novation remote 25SL controler. You can find more info on the shows on Blindoldfreak. If you are in the area, this is a great opportunity to see some of this equipment used live.

Sequencer Development (Last Stage)

YouTube via nathanielscott
"So, I have about got the kicks worked out of my first sequencer. Everything works from the start, stop, step push buttons, to the Portamento control, though the portamento is a bit glichey (I need to research way to build that bit with more control).

The video shows some toy keyboards that I hacked to gain gate control over the onboard sequencers. The Casio SK-1 may not really be a total toy but the little grey Lonestar keyboard totally is. I paid three bucks for it at a thrift shop a couple of weeks ago.

I still need to build a better VCO. I have done very little research in this area and I feel that a good VCO would go a long way to a better performance feel, thereby giving better user experience in playing music. (just a thought)

The last bit of the video has music recorded with the sequencer but the VCO is run through a large amp and miked, and also DIed, so are the other keyboards wich include my Poly-61 and Crumar Performer."

"Yesterday I was working on the mix for the track Apple (weird working title but there you go..) The artist is a very talented guy from Poland called Antkowiak and we have recorded a full album that will hopefully be released this spring. A great blend between odd sounds and great songs.

Doepfer Sequencer Novation ReMotezero SL with Ableton

YouTube via inbetweenmovements
"used ableton to trigger NOTES and VELOCITY through a scale. Controlled by Remote Zero SL. 15 steps generate a interesting pattern together with 8 steps triggered by midi clock controlling the a-120 VCF and A-121 VCF2 Filters. drums by er 1 through sherman filterbank and line 6 echopark, some kaoss effects in the end on the drums"

Vermona Perfourmer + TB-303 (video 2)

YouTube via DeathByDinSync. video 1 here
"Video 2 of the Perfourmer / TB-303 combo...
In this video, I have Synth 2 being controlled by CV/Gate from my TB-303 (out of frame). Synth 1, 3 & 4 are being controlled via MIDI, on the different channels, by Ableton Live. Synth 3 & 4 are using melodic oscillators, where Synth 1 is using white noise.

The TB-303's actual audio is brought in later, through my mixer... (around the 4:55 time)

Bass drum is from a TR-606 sample in Ableton

Synare Sensor

"vintage 1970's Synare Sensor Drum synthesizer in its original box with 16 page booklet and insert for adapter should you need it. Made by Star Instruments Stafford Springs Ct. USA. 9 Volt battery required. The unit attaches to any drum rim and is run through a amp, P.A. or headphones. I had alot of fun with it doing weddings and Disco gigs in the late 70's and early 80's. It has many different sounds and adjustments to make it last long or short. Triggered when you hit the drum."
