Synthesis:
SuperWave is inspired by the analogue world. With a smooth and full sound, these machines are ideal for creating all those well known synth sounds. SID is a faithful emulation of the MOS6581 chip, originally found in the Commodore 64. The SID tones can be strong and dirty. Be careful! DigiPRO offers raw digital waveforms which cut like hot knives through butter. This method also hosts the user waveforms and a set of sampled drum sounds. FM+ uses three customized FM machines each with its own personality. Soft bells or total mayhem, anything is possible. VO is the genie in the box. The implemented formant synthesis, inspired by classic voice modeling, will basically make the Monomachine talk.

The Sequencer:
The Monomachine sequencer offers total control over the tracks. Treat a pattern as an incredibly complex sound, transpose it up and down in real time and enjoy the most powerful compositions in existence. Use slide, swing and transpose functions to fine tune a pattern. On top of this, there’s no less than 12 arpeggiators available.

Parameter locks:
A parameter lock lets a note trig have specific parameter settings assigned to it. Basically every parameter found in the Monomachine is possible to parameter lock. In a melodic sequence every note can for example have unique synthesis, filter and effect settings. Parameter locks open up a new world of sequencing possibilities.

iPad and Toplap for creating atmospheric computer sounds

YouTube via pepemogt — April 27, 2010 — "I was playing with the Toplap app by Click Nilson on the iPad.

TOPLAPapp is a sonic puzzle based around a virtual machine for sound synthesis. This machine only accepts a few valid instructions, and you control it by placing each command letter within a grid, along with setting some associated parameter sliders. The machine runs through the grid, following the instructions to create the output sounds, which are usually of a somewhat noisy character, hopefully interestingly so. The historical antecedents include instruction synthesis as pionneered at the Institute of Sonology in the 1970s, and the live coding movement, of modifying a running program as it acts. This app is intended for those interested in more experimental sound art, and is in no way a traditional diatonic melody generator. Don't download this unless you are open to stranger computer music sounds.

Be careful of your ears, this app can produce wild sounds at high volume. Program this sound synthesis puzzle machine by dragging letters TOPLAp to the grid; you can also set a parameter for each position via the slider at each slot. The audio engine whizzes through the states many times per second. Press ! to clear the grid, and ? to randomise. No save or load is allowed, to promote improvisation. Live coding engineered by Click Nilson.

Click Nilson emerged from the Swedish algorithmic music scene in the mid 1970s with his groundbreaking piece "An Instructional Game for 1 to many musicians". This piece, whilst entirely unrealiant on digital technologies, formed a key part of the techniques - along with other pioneering artists such as Sol Lewitt and the Alan Turing Five - that formed the basis of what has today become the production of software in a live performative context - i.e., livecoding."

SPEKTRUM SYNTH TUTORIAL 1

YouTube via DonGarbutt — April 27, 2010 — "Reaktor Spektrum Synth by Don Garbutt: Wavetable sound section is examined. This section came from the Reaktor Library instrument "Oki Computer 2.1". It is similar to the PPG and Waldorf instruments, in that multiple waveforms are placed in a list and the list position is controlled and morphed by various mechanisms such as step-sequencer, envelope generators, low frequency oscillators, automation and MIDI controllers. More features of the Spektrum Synth and some cool sounds in subsequent videos."

Voltage Controlled Wah Wah for Modular Synths

YouTube via thecmpguru — April 27, 2010 — "This is a circuit I designed, based off of a multiple feedback active filter described by R.G. Keen (http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/wahpedl/wahped.htm).

The effect is a band-pass like response with a movable center frequency. Unlike Keen's circuit, however, the frequency of this circuit is voltage controllable (instead of manually using a pot). Also, I have increased the input impedance and made it non-inverting overall.

The circuit takes an input signal (typically, 5 Vp-p audio) and an input control voltage (tested ranges of -5V to 5V). It outputs the filtered audio with a potentiometer for controlling volume.

This demo shows a MOTM synth generating the input signal (a sawtooth wave) and the control voltage signal (from the LFO). The control voltage sweeping up and down is akin to a guitarist rocking a wah-wah pedal back and forth. But instead of guitars, here we're dealing with a modular synth.

Next steps..... make a prototype board of this sucker!"

Arp Solus

YouTube via HenfieldJ — September 30, 2008 — "This is a video of the ARP Solus, done both for Historical sake, as well as for my eBay auction. The Solus was a low cost budget analog monophonic synth made by ARP in the late 1970's and early 1980's before ARP went bankrupt. Some of the main features are its built-in case, 2 VCO's (which are super stable and stay in tune!), a 24db low pass filter that can be made to self-oscillate, a ring modulator, oscillator sync, ability to add Freqeuncy Modulation (FM) to oscillator 2, full set of CV ins/outs, and an external input to route through the filter and envelopes.

This is my first youtube video, it is not as easy as it looks! It was very difficult to do by myself. Also, please excuse my lousy keyboard playing"

Note this is a SynthEdit VST. SynthEdit is a synth engine that allows you to make your own custom synths. You build your synth with the basic building blocks in the program and then create your own custom UI. Think of this as DIY for soft synths. When you see an "emulation" like this based on SynthEdit, realize the sound engine is based on SynthEdit. The UI is just a skin. This is not custom code built from the ground up to emulate the detailed characteristics of the classic synth featured. Companies that do produce custom code emulations include GForce, Way Out Ware, and Arturia. That said, these VSTs are synths, can be edited, and many are free. Both KVR and MyVST.com are great resources to explore the world of soft synths.

If anyone knows more about SynthEdit and it's capabilities, feel free to comment.

via kvr on Reality:

"Reality is an emulation of the Realistic MG-1, a synth that was sold by Radio-shack but was made by the Moog company. Special attention was given to the oscillators, analog instability and overall oddness of the original.

Features:

* 2 analog style oscillators (tone sources) with saw/square waveform, sync and ring modulation (bell).
* Noise generator.
* Tempo sync LFO (modulation) with triangle, square and random waveforms.
* ASR envelope (contour).
* VCA with multiple mode, envelope, key (gate) and continuous.
* 24db filter modulated by the LFO and Envelope.
* Monophonic or polyphonic modes with separate tuning."

The Gristleizer is 100% analog, hand-built, and made in America."

Armonyx 8000 Synthesizer

via eBay

"If you collect extreemly rare keyboards and synthisizers this is it !

This is a mint.. like new, ( 1985 ) never used Armonyx 8000 system ! The keyboard alone weighs over 32 lbs. The keyboard is made with extreem quality. It uses a light pen to draw your waveform and the light pen must use an RGB graphics card with light pen port on it. Yes that's right, we're talking XT DOS systems.

What a beautiful collectors item... for personal collectors or musems.

It comes with software, computer card, light pen, all cables, maunal, keyboard, custom sewn vinyl keyboard cover, in original box. ( box is over 4 1/2 feet long .)

I'm sure it all functions fine, but am selling "as is "... no returns.. the box is too big to shuffle around much. I'll double box it which will take some time.

The software should be good... but setting that many years in a box, I don't know if the sofware is still good on not. ( should be. )

This company was light years ahead of other systems when they intruducd this fantastic synthisizer. You could just draw any waveform you wished and imediately hear the sound you just created on the multi voice polyphonic keyboard.

Installation Requirments:
IBM-PC hardware and software compatibility.
At least 256K system RAM
IBM-PC color graphics adaptor or compatible.
1 5 1/4" floppy drive
10" X 4 1/4" minimum board space.
Dos 2.0 or higher

It notes that if you own a Tandy 1000 computer.. that it has a light pen port on the back of the computer. Other wise, you'll have to make sure your RGB card supports light pen port.

SHIPPING: This thing is heavy and large box. $60.00 on shipping within upper 48 states, Email me if you live else where for a quote.

Happy bidding on this extremely rare keyboard."
