4ms Percussion Interface (PI) & Expander - Teaser

4ms Company

Note the Percussion Interface made its first appearance at SUPERBOOTH 2019 and 2020.

"The Percussion Interface (PI) and PI Expander are a pair of Eurorack modules that generate gates and envelopes from acoustic drums, samplers, drum machines and virtually any audio source. Converting microphone, instrument, line and modular signals into CV and clock/gate signals, the PI and PI Expander are suited for synchronizing sequencers or other modules to the rhythm of an audio track or live percussion. The modules can simultaneously be used as a pre-amp for microphones or line-level signals, while generating inverted envelopes useful for side-chaining. The PI module contains all the core functionality and can be used without the Expander to conserve space. The Expander requires the main PI module and adds three gain stage options, a modular-level audio output jack, a 1/4” (6.35mm) input jack, and envelope attenuation capabilities.

------------------

Percussion Interface and PI Expander features:

Sensitivity knob, Low/Medium/High gain switch, and clipping LED

Sustain control to prevent misfires, increase gate length, and control the envelope

Envelope decay control

Non-inverted and inverted envelope outputs, useful for side chaining

Four envelope outputs: two attenuated with independent attenuators, and two non-attenuated

Envelope following or generation modes

Gate output for clocking sequencers or any unit with a clock or trigger input

Compatibility with drums, samplers, microphones, drum machines, etc.

1/4" input jack (6.35mm)

4HP each

$165"

4ms Ensemble Oscillator (ENOSC) - Learn Mode

4ms Company

"The Ensemble Oscillator allows users to create their own custom scales. Here we have a CV keyboard inputting notes, and a QPLFO used for modulating waveforms and Root control. Make sure to listen in stereo when possible. Sound is straight from the Ensemble Oscillator with no processing or effects.

#4MSENOSC Ensemble Oscillator #modbap Jam 2

Published on May 16, 2020 BBoy Tech Report

"The Ensemble Oscillator is a unified polyphonic voice of sixteen complex oscillators combining additive, FM, phase-distortion and wave folding synthesis techniques in new unorthodox ways. By quantizing the oscillators to scales or series of harmonics, the Ensemble Oscillator allows you to explore the sonic boundary between musical chords and rich evolving textures. Easily create a wide variety of sounds ranging from aggregates of pure sine waves to pulsar synthesis or pristine harmonic tones and lush wide chords to rich dirty drones and rumbling glitches. Custom scales can quickly be “learned” and saved using a CV keyboard or by manually entering notes with the controls.

The Ensemble Oscillator is designed by Matthias Puech and 4ms Company.

Cheers

The Spherical Wavetable Navigator (SWN) is a six-channel synthesizer that makes it easy to create slowly morphing drones, polyphonic melodies, evolving sequences, and rich textures. The SWN features six wavetable oscillators with independent pitch, level, and waveform controls. Six LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) can be used as modulation sources and/or envelopes, making it easy to add dynamic motion to your patch. Each channel is a full voice and can be “played” using the top row of buttons, the internal LFOs, or note-change detection on the 1V/oct jacks. The SWN ships with 12 three-dimensional (spherical) wavetables and an easy interface which allows you to record and edit custom wavetables from live audio. Open-source software for Mac, Windows, and Linux called SphereEdit can be freely downloaded and allows you computer to create, edit, and convert .wav files into Spherical wavetables to transfer into the SWN with an audio cable."

How to DIY Properly (how I prep for successful builds)

Published on May 7, 2019 LeoMakes

"Have you ever messed up a DIY build? Maybe you made a synth or pedal that didn't quite work right? I've gotten questions about this so in this video, I'll walk you through how I prepare for a build and set myself up for success. (Hint: it's mostly down to organization.)

NOTE: This video is mostly about preparation and organization. For detailed tips on the actual soldering (with lots of gorgeous close-up shots) I made a whole separate video for that: [posted here]

I'm certainly not the world's best DIYer or anything so tell me... How do YOU prep? Please share your tips below!

Thanks to the people of 4MS (www.4mscompany.com) for providing the QPLFO (Quad, Pingable LFO). This module is awesome because it packs a lot of functionality (4 LFOs!) in only 12HPs of space--perfect for smaller/portable rigs! This video ran long so I'll have to show this product in-use in a future video.

Here is a link to that product:

When not making videos I run Strange Science Instruments,

a modular synth company based in Sweden & California:

4ms Listen Modules & Battery Powered Pod Setup

Published on Feb 19, 2019 4mspedals

"Create a small but ultra flexible system for music production using Pods and Listen modules from 4ms Company.
The Listen IO module is your interface between Eurorack and external gear. Here we use the Listen IO to connect a KORG Volca Beats and Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator into our Eurorack system made of two Pod32's and a Pod20. Two headphone jacks on the Listen IO let you and a friend listen along in stereo.
At the end of the signal chain is a Listen Four, which mixes up to four signals in stereo and outputs to headphones and line level. A bigger version of the Listen Four is the Listen Four Quarters, which has 1/4" (6.35mm) balanced TRS outputs.

The entire setup is being powered directly from a Krisdonia laptop battery using our standard DC barrel cables, and offers hours of continuous low-noise use."

Listen Four

The Listen Four is a four channel stereo mixer with line, modular, and headphone outputs. Two mono channels with Pan knobs and two stereo channels with dual inputs provide optimal compatibility with both stereo and mono signals. The Listen Four can be daisy-chained to other Listen modules to create a larger mixer with sub-mix outputs.

PATCH & TWEAK - Exploring Modular Synthesis Book on Kickstarter

via Kickstarter:

"The new book about modular synths, their makers, and masters. Patching secrets, performance tips, history, modules, and techniques.

'Hello!

My name is Kim Bjørn – welcome to the PATCH & TWEAK Kickstarter campaign! Following our book PUSH TURN MOVE about electronic music instruments - we are now creating a book on modular synthesis.

We want PATCH & TWEAK to provide an opportunity for new and experienced users to become true masters of their modular systems. In the style of its predecessor, PATCH & TWEAK contains inspirational interviews with significant creators and major artists who all share their passion for modular. Explore their systems, philosophies, patching secrets, and performance tips.

Besides a comprehensive introduction to synthesis and its history, the book covers systematic sections on concepts, purpose and creative possibilities of specific modules. Enjoy colorful diagrams, presentations of both popular and rare modules, semi-modular and software, as well as techniques for patching and how to get started.

PATCH & TWEAK has a foreword by Suzanne Ciani, is written by Kim Bjørn and Chris Meyer, and edited by Paul Nagle.

So what exactly is PATCH & TWEAK? Watch the video, take the tour below, and please support the book by selecting a reward if you like the idea.'

Kim Bjørn, Copenhagen, May 2018

About the book

Meet the makers, and artists

Apart from systematic sections and general subjects PATCH & TWEAK features interviews with the passionate makers of modules and systems, and the artists who use them, and influence them. We have already started interviewing - and when more artists are confirmed, we will keep you updated!
