Roland Juno 106

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"First part I demo a few presets and most of the controls.
On the second part I enter test mode and let you listen to the 6 voices filter calibration.
This is a good test to check if your Juno 106 needs calibration. Most of the calibration procedure is dedicated to the filter setting, since oscillators are DCO they won't drift, but the filters can. By entering test mode and selecting bank 3 you basically recall a patch that has filter in self oscillation with keyboard tracking, thus you can easily hear if any of the 6 voices is off. Just play notes in the high and low notes and listen to the pitch (and amplitude). The 6 voices should sound the same, like on this unit. If one or more is way off it's time for calibration."

Roland MKS-30 Kiwi Technics-30 JX3P SN 502531

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is essentially a hybrid of a Roland JX3P (oscillators) and Juno 106 (envelopes and filter) in a 2U rack. Thanks to the Juno filters, it has a more refined sound than the JX3P, but it still retains the crucial features of 2 DCOs and 3 envelopes of the KIWI mod....putting into Jupiter 6 territory. Actually smoother than a Jupiter 6 (I had one next to it for comparison for a while). If you like the Juno 106 sound but wish it had more advanced features, this is your dream synth.

Also including 6 extra original Juno voice chips that I pulled from my 106 when I upgraded to Analog Renasiance chips. This unit still has the original chips but they have been refurbished, so with this unit you'll have a total of 12 original Juno chips...plenty to last you if you're a stickler for the original sound (as am I).

Upgrade performed by a pro-technician. Here is the list of features:

1536 Tones in 3 Sets of 512 can be stored and all can be edited. It is also possible to edit any Tone using the front panel, PG-200 or midi.

Tones are stored in Flash memory so no battery is required.

MidiCC & Sysex support for parameters edits and Midi Sysex support for Tone Load. The Kiwi30 will support full midi control and editing in real time. Midi thru maintained on this unit.

SOLTON PROJECT 100

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Frankly we're not that well versed in 80s Digital or hybrid synths - MIDI sync, sub menus accessible by pressing three buttons simultaneously while peering into unsexy tiny screens trying to figure out what parameter you're actually tweaking...

It can be demoralising.

But we like the Solton Project 100 a lot - maybe because it looks like the Solton Programmer 24 - and they match up very nicely sound wise as well - more of that to come.

It's a 6 voice DCO synthesizer with SSM filters and came out around the same time as the Roland Juno 106. In this video we're only using the Solton Project 100 - and especially its built-in sequencer - basically just recording patterns and then flipping through the presets to create something.

The sequencer doesn't quantize at all from what we can tell - which is a bit odd - but also kind of cool.

It definitely grants you textures and phrases that you might not have settled for were they perfectly in grid.

Jason Basson made a ton of impulsive videos of the Solton Project 100 a while back - does anyone know what happened to him? [He's still around. You can find some of his Solton videos in previous posts here]

Roland Juno-106 Synthesizer - The little brother in the shadow of the Juno-60?

Many consider the Juno-60 to be the best Juno synthesizer. This is reflected in the great admiration and in the second-hand market prices. And yes, I like the Juno-60 a lot too. It was one of my first synths and I made most of the tracks with it. But, I also like the Juno-106 very much. The sound character is slightly different. Some people say it sounds plastic. I think they mean that the sound is less lush and more sterile. Well, the Juno-106 sounds like the link to the later JX series to me. But the sound is more deep. But he only has one DCO and one sub oscillator per voice. With the Juno-106 you can achieve wonderful sub-basses that the Juno-60 cannot do exactly as well. The Juno-106 pad sounds are also wonderful. I think there should be more love for the Juno-106. It's not a Juno-60. But the Juno-60 is not a Juno-106 either.

And here is a 90s dance music demo track

Nymphes & Juno 106 // ACTUALLY Compared

video upload by

"Nymphes First Impressions : [posted here]

// MY ENTIRE POINT // TLDW : They're totally different, although the seeing them as similar is not totally unfair. Careful, informed programming can help you get where you want.

I can understand why people are comparing these, the Juno 106 is so ubiquitous, it will get brought up no matter what.
And I, and many others, see most of the Juno's "essence" is superficially here ; 6 voices, 1 osc, a proper sub oscillator, with stereo chorus easy to add.

Then, with even a bit of proper investigation, you'll find that they behave quite differently. VCO vs DCO, the relative phase of the saw and square, potential LFO routings, among more.

BUT in the end, the "Juno thing" is not a static goal, or really quantifiable. And with careful, informed programming, many synths can give you some element of that "thing", whatever it is to you in that moment. If the Juno patch has only a saw and a sub, the Nymphes has no trouble at all re-creating the sound with a really impressive amount of accuracy. If it has a saw and a square, with an open filter, they will sound radically different. But not bad. Just different. And often, different in a way that is insignificant to the final sound, certainly irrelevant to what compositions a sound can be used for.

So, there's so much nuance at play here and so many things to teach and learn about, that I view a 14 minute video riffing on an open sawtooth as a pretty huge blunder. 👀

KAWAI SX-210 - Analog Synthesizer Review, Sounds & Demo

video upload by

"Kawai SX-210 analog synthesizer review, sounds and demo. This Kawai SX210 synth review covers various features of the Kawai SX-210, a demo of Kawai SX210 sounds and patches, and concludes with my final thoughts including pros and cons of this vintage 1983 polysynth.

The Kawai SX-210 is an 8-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer manufactured in the early 80s, and competed with the Roland Juno 106 and Korg Polysix. It has 1 analog DCO with saw, square (adjustable pulse width), PWM and sub-oscillator waveshapes. The VCF and VCA are both analog (VCF uses SSM filters) and have adjustable ADSR envelopes, and there is a high-pass filter onboard as well.

The Kawai SX-210 has 1 LFO with adjustable delay and speed, and uses sawtooth, square and sine waveshapes, all of which can be reversed. The LFO can modulate the DCO, VCF and VCA all simultaneously, as well as be used for envelope triggering of VCF/VCA.

The Kawai SX210 also has a 4-voice mode using 2 DCO per voice, a monophonic unison lead mode, and chord memory mode that allows you to stack oscillators for big fat sounds. The built-in Ensemble effects can help to widen the stereo image and is great for pads and strings.

Additional features on the Kawai SX-210 include adjustable pitch bender w/ adjustable bender range, key hold, portamento and glissando, 32 patch memory locations, large LED display, and dial wheel for editing.

Overall the Kawai SX-210 is a somewhat obscure synth with its own distinct features and sound character. The layout is easy to understand and uses buttons to select functions and a dial wheel to adjust their parameters. There were only a few thousand Kawai SX210 manufactured so it is not as common as other synths, but its certainly an interesting vintage synth with some cool features for the time. Keep your eyes peeled for the Kawai SX-210 if it interests you!

Cherry Audio Introduces Quadra - ARP Quadra Emulation, Synth Stack 2, Year 3 Collection

video upload by Cherry Audio

Right on target.

"The Cherry Audio Quadra is a super-accurate and immensely improved emulation of the ARP Quadra synthesizer, originally released in 1978 - a rare and coveted “unicorn” instrument in the synthesizer world, reproduced for the first time as a virtual instrument.

We've wildly expanded it for an experience that blows away the real thing in every conceivable way. Each of its four sections is independently assignable to any region of the keyboard for endless splitting and layering flexibility. The overall sound quality has been improved for a richer and fatter tone. And not only did we make a killer emulation of the onboard phaser effect, we added a stereo chorus/flanger, a syncable echo, and studio-quality reverb - all individually routable for unprecedented effects flexibility."

CRUMAR BIT-99 Vintage CEM Synthesizer + Original Case & Schematics

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction - demos here

"Crumar Bit-99 in superb conditions. Comes with the original schematics and hard case. Always handled with love and care this unit has been recently serviced: fully recapped and checked, this beauty looks great and works like a charm.

The Crumar Bit 99 is a spectacular polyphonic analog synthesizer made in Italy in 1985. Originally designed to compete against the Polysix and Juno 106, this compact black tank went further by implementing a dual-osc voice structure, more similar to that of the OB-8 and Prophet 5. The 2 DCOs, 6 CEM filters, 6 VCAs, 2 LFOs each per voice and a powerful Unison/Double Mode make the Bit-99 a very warm and flexible synthesizer.

Key Features :

6 CEM 3328 VCF
Velocity sensitive keyboard with keyboard sensitivity pot
Full access to all the parameters via MIDI Sysex
99 memory locations
Normal Mode: 6 voice polyphony
Double/Split Mode: 3 voice polyphony for each sound
2 DCO (TRI - SAW - PW - Noise)
VCF : Cutoff, Resonance, Tracking, Invert , ADSR
2 Assignable LFO (VCA - VCF - DCO 1/2)
1 VCA ADSR with Dynamic Attack and Amount

The Bit-99 has its own very distinctive, solid and bright sound. Exceptionally bright compared to most analog instruments. This total black beauty can surprisingly generate DX-style electric pianos and harps, woody and dissonant percussive sounds, brilliant string ensembles, punchy basses and brasses, funky leads and organs and a wide array of classic synth sounds.

The Bit-99 is also very easy to use. The printing on the front panel reminds you the various settings for sound editing. Just type the parameter number and change it's value using the + and - buttons. But thanks to the Sysex implementation, the Bit-99 can also be edited using free Editors available for Mac/Win."

1983 KORG Poly-61 Programmable Polyphonic Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by keyboard resource

via this auction

"Works good. Some damage to bottom edges. Joystick is bent. Number 1 button sometimes re-triggers. See pictures.

This was Korg's answer to the Roland Juno-60 and it looks like a Juno-106 but the Poly-61 is more interesting in many ways.

Features:
- Six-voice polyphonic analog synth with digital controls
- Two digitally-controlled oscillators using square/pulse or saw waveforms
- Arpeggiator with latch, one-, two- or full octave range and up, up/down or down modes
- Polyphonic and Chord Memory/mono (unison) modes
- Hold button (any key pressed stays on until polyphony reached or turned off)
- Pitch bend joystick with DCO (pitch) modulation (up) or VCF (filter) modulation (down)"
