SUPERBOOTH24 Set for May 16 - 18, 2024

Press Release follows:

Berlin, the 28th of August 2023

The SUPERBOOTH BERLIN is happy to announce the date for the next edition of Superbooth: SUPERBOOTH24 will be happening from the 16th to the 18th of May 2024 at FEZ-Berlin.

Pre-sale tickets for SB24 will be available from the first of November 2023. Brands and manufacturers that are interested in exhibiting at SB24 can already contact us. More information regarding SB24 will follow in the fall.

For the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN, even during the beginning of this year being able to securely plan for 2024 was not a given. Like many large-scale events and festivals, the Superbooth had faced substantial financial difficulties due to pandemic-related cancellations and restrictions. This year’s SB23 was the first Superbooth that could happen without restrictions since 2019, and its success was crucial in deciding the future of the event.

As such, the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN is belated to announce that SUPERBOOTH23 was a resounding success that was able to secure the continuation of the event. As the biggest and most successful Superbooth to date, SB23 trumped even the previous record year 2019 with over 250 exhibitors from all the world and over 9000 visitors and participants.

Even on social media, SUPERBOOTH23 was more present than ever, perhaps because of the event’s continued, but amplified focus on inclusivity and diversity in the electronic music technology industry, a direction that was welcomed enthusiastically by most of the Superbooth’s visitors and participants. With initiatives such as the “Minibooth” for children and adolescents, workshops for women and nonbinary people and a women’s quota in the performance booking, the SUPERBOOTH23 attempted to showcase a way towards a more open and inclusive future of electronic music-making.

The various musical performance stages gave the SB23 the character of a music festival, with a musical focus on special live performances that fall outside the reach of typical large-scale festival bookings. The new session stage brought new genres such as dub, reggae, and different forms of bass music to the event. In the evening hours, the ever-popular Strandbühne (beach stage) with its relaxed vibe and various catering offerings conjured an atmosphere that lived up to the energy of a proper music festival.

During SB23, attendees often remarked that there was a noticeable relaxed, perhaps even euphoric atmosphere that could be felt all across the event. The Superbooth’s unique concept of a “trade fair with the spirit of a festival” has once again proven itself as something unique within the world of electronic music.

For 2024, the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN will further build on the success of 2023 but of course also attempt to make the event even better, so that it can continue to live up to its status as the world’s biggest trade fair for electronic musical instruments. As such, the SUPERBOOTH BERLIN is open and thankful for feedback of any kind (e-mail: info@superbooth.com).

Showcasing the String Armonica: Live Demo of a New Electro-Acoustic Synthesizer

video upload by The Sound Stone

"We are thrilled to showcase our new prototype: The String Armonica. This new electro-acoustic synthesizer employs electromagnets to resonate twelve distinct strings. Using the power of harmonic resonance, we've managed to design it to play up to 48 notes of full polyphony using a MIDI controller. All the sounds that this instrument produces originate solely from the vibrations of the strings themselves. Nested within the body of the instrument lies a a polyphonic synthesizer, which outputs notes that resonate the strings and they're octave harmonics.

The String Armonica works differently than how a guitar sustainer works. In a sustainer (Sound Stone, Ebow, etc), it will resonate a string regardless of its tuning. In order for the String Armonica to correctly work, the strings must be tuned so that they match the resonant frequency of the internal synthesizer. By adjusting the tuning pegs, you're able to 'voice' the loudness of each octave and can make certain octaves louder than others or of equal volume.

When you listen through headphones, the stereophonic output becomes evident as one set of strings is panned to the left and another to the right, creating a rich, immersive experience. However, a monophonic option is available as well.

The name of the instrument, 'The String Armonica,' pays homage to the rare Glass Armonica, an exquisite crystal glass instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin. The resemblance in the sound produced by our instrument to that of a Glass Armonica is very similar which is why we thought of this name.

In our improvisation demonstration, we explore the instrument's potential by adjusting the volume with an expression pedal and using the mod wheel of the MIDI controller to generate a staccato tremolo effect.

It's important to note that this is a prototype. In its current state, it may appear a bit rough around the edges due to several adjustments and changes we've made along the way. The final manufactured version will be significantly more refined and less crude.

For those interested in owning one of these innovative instruments, we encourage you to add your name and email to our pre-order list. Once we are ready to commence manufacturing, we will send you additional information and a purchase link.

Here's the pre-order link:

We appreciate your interest in our creation.

Best,
Will from Merkaba Electronics

Korg PS-3100 Its Alive!

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Pics of the inside below.

"Aesthetic condition 7/10

Electronically 90%

Functionality 65%

Description:

The instrument turns on and makes sound. Keybed is working via the trigger output fully and trigger all notes, however some note behave differently and randomly. This most likely cause by the cracked pcd slots, which is a n issue with most ps-series synths. I recommend you take a look at the youtube video.

Wave forms, vco, is working and can select pulse, saw, noise etc. Other functions seem to be functioning correctly via the eg output. Also all other functions on the control panel seems to be working as it should.

Buttons and knobs are working, but need work or replacement as there is some crackle and noticeable hiccup especially with the switches and selectors. This probably needs cleaning or replacement.

Originally when i bought this synth it did not turn on, so I asked the tech to change all the capacitors (about 100) to see if it will turn on and make sound safely.

As mentioned above, the pcb slots are cracked and need replacement. There is a 80% chance that after replacing these slots, the synth will work properly but i will leave that judgement to a pro.

Also some retracing or treatment need to be done, due to corrosion (10%). I have more photo's and video's available, a drive link can be shared to see."

InstaComposer 2 - Evolved AI MIDI Tool (VST / AU / AAX)

video upload by W. A. Production

Press release follows:

W.A. Production introduces InstaComposer 2 as advanced AI MIDI Tool taking popular MIDI creation station plug-in predecessor to another level

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: W.A. Production, producers crafting creative plug-ins to help anyone achieve studio-quality processing speedily and easily, is proud to introduce InstaComposer 2 as an advanced AI MIDI Tool taking its popular InstaComposer MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) creation station plug-in predecessor to another level — launching new features and improvements that enhance the user experience with more MIDI tracks, scenes, new scales, and new modes married with enhanced generative coding and superior performance to make practicable new ideas flow more quickly than ever before by producing a wide variety of musical elements, including melodies, phrases, riffs, and chord progressions to provide both beginners and professional musicians with endless possibilities for creating unique and engaging music in any genre or style while working with an intuitive interface and advanced algorithms allowing them to focus on the creative aspect of music production without having to think about composing every note — as of July 6…

Ever experienced those testing moments when creativity runs dry? Do not fear, for InstaComposer 2 is the ultimate musical muse. Indeed, infinite inspiration is at the creative core of the thinking behind making InstaComposer 2 what it is — an advanced MIDI generation plug-in designed to revolutionise music creation. By building upon the solid foundation of W.A. Production’s popular InstaComposer — itself released to widespread critical acclaim in its original incarnation in October 2021, InstaComposer 2 truly represents an even more attractive proposition, with exciting new features and improvements to enhance the user experience. Example highlights include an ability to organise ideas and song parts with eight new so-called ‘scenes’ — Scene 1 through to Scene 8 — that provide a convenient way to store different variations within a single preset; upgraded Scale support, with 22 additional scales ranging from Arabic and Spanish through to Miyako Bushi, Ryukyu, and more; a new virtual keyboard and highlighted chord menus to help with scale and chord selection; and melodies that can be generated in different modes and paired with unique chord progressions for each scale. Speaking of which, InstaComposer 2 adds two new-generation modes to its notable name — namely, Drums, enabling effortless generation of drum lines (supporting a wide variety of complexity levels, styles, and time signatures), and Pad 2, facilitating creation of a fuller, richer sound (by combining Pad and Chord modes). AI algorithms have been further improved for rhythm, phrase, and melody generation, conjuring more refined results, while new additions like the Sustain parameter — provides control over the length of the notes that are going to be generated — and a Chord Helper — highlights the notes for the selected chord on the virtual keyboard — help take things to another level entirely.

Each new starting point for InstaComposer 2 generates a unique result to ensure that users never run out of fresh ideas and possibilities for their compositions, ultimately. Unlike random note generation, InstaComposer 2 employs meticulously crafted algorithms and databases to produce musical ideas. Indeed, it constructs rhythmic and melodic structures that sound correct by mimicking human creativity — selecting notes that fit the given scale and context, and creating cohesive phrases that complement underlying chords. Clearly, InstaComposer 2 ‘understands’ the human brain’s affinity for pattern recognition. After all, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is involved in making InstaComposer 2 do what it does — different shapes and formats are used to build captivating combinations of beats and bars, adding rhythmic and melodic consistency often found in chart-topping music. Moreover, by using smaller musical chunks that repeat or occur in various forms throughout the melody, InstaComposer 2 builds larger blocks, creating a sense of unity throughout its user’s music-making interactions. It even harmonises notes to enrich the sonics (depending on selected mode and settings), resulting in a more cohesive composition as it aligns melody to chords. Adjustable AI controls — Generate Chords generates harmonious sequences of chords inspired by the most commonly used chord progressions, for instance — and a convenient Chaos control — ensures everything remains under control by preventing unwanted chaotic situations such as notes repeating excessively, jumping erratically, or climbing too far in one direction — mean that users can comfortably remain in charge of how InstaComposer 2 develops ideas (and how far it strays from any set rules), while fine-tuning of chord complexity, note population, beat and bar structuring, pattern generation, harmonisation, velocity randomisation, and more are always available.

As an advanced AI MIDI Tool, InstaComposer 2 includes complex algorithms for generating Melody (generates a wide variety of melodies and phrases), Riff (similar to Melody, but with shorter phrases, more repeating patterns, and more restricted structures), Ostinato (generates short melodic phrases that keep repeating, often ignoring chord changes underneath), Rhythm (generates more harmonies, focusing on rhythmic patterns and chord notes), Bass (generates bass lines that compliment chords and melodies being played), Chord (focuses on the chord notes with options to inverse chords and add bass notes), and Pad (emphasises longer notes often focusing on harmonies based on underlying chords). Creatively exploring the potential of these modes means users are always uncovering unique and compelling music. Moreover, with those eight scenes available alongside six tracks — Track 1 through to Track 6, InstaComposer 2 offers flexibility and organisation for multiple layers, alternative variations, and different song parts within a single preset.

Put it this way: with a user-friendly piano-roll interface at their fingertips, users can effortlessly manoeuvre, duplicate, and remove notes, and even change velocity to effectively breathe life into their riffs, while the onboard MIDI editor can be used to tweak the output of InstaComposer 2, meaning music can be manipulated before it even leaves the plug-in. Personalised style and creativity can be easily added to the AI-generated phrases, in other words.

Modifying MIDI playback directly within the InstaComposer 2 interface itself is also on offer — simply save the output as a MIDI file or conveniently drag and drop it into a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). It is also worth noting here that each track can be saved separately. Setting up multi-channel instruments as an alternative workflow also allows for routing MIDI from InstaComposer 2 into virtual instruments to preview all six tracks simultaneously — and all without ever having to leave the plug-in environment.

It is fair to say, then, that by taking its popular plug-in predecessor to another level as InstaComposer 2, W.A. Production has surely succeeded in creating the only MIDI creation station anyone could conceivably wish for... today, tomorrow, and into the foreseeable future!

InstaComposer 2 is available to purchase at an attractive 70%-discounted introductory promo price of $32.70 USD until August 17, 2023 — rising thereafter to its regular price of $109.00 USD — as a 64-bit AU-, VST-, and VST3-compatible plug-in for macOS (10.15 or later) and 32- or 64-bit VST-, and VST3-compatible plug-in for Windows (8 or later), as well as an AAX-compatible plug-in for Pro Tools (11 or higher), directly from W.A. Production via its dedicated webpage, which also includes some superb audio previews, here: https://www.waproduction.com/plugins/view/instacomposer-2

Owners of the original InstaComposer can upgrade to InstaComposer 2 for only $10.00 USD.

14-day, fully-functional trial versions of all W.A. Production plug-ins — including InstaComposer 2 — are available by signing up for an account for free from here: https://www.waproduction.com/users/login

A Compact Creation! But Now What? // The "Dead End" of The Groovebox Workflow - Compact Creation

video upload by Ricky Tinez

"I'm curious to know your favorite way of finishing a track that you start on a "groovebox". Do you just leave it there, try to song mode it or pattern chain it into a masterpiece, or stem it out one by one. Which, of course, takes longer but gets the job done. Today I mess around and start a track idea using the OG Novation Circuit and the Arturia Minifreak but quickly come to the roadblock that I usually come across when using Groove boxes and other forms of dawless music making."

Benge - Forms 15 "Dawn" made on the DK Synergy

video upload by zack dagoba

"New album by Benge - part 15 of his FORMS Series - albums made on one synthesis system. Here is an ambient album made entirely on a Digital Keyboards Synergy II+ and Lexicon Model 200 / Primetime early digital FX

https://zackdagoba.bandcamp.com/album...

'The pure digital sounds of the D K Synergy, and the two very special effects units from the same year (1984), feature the same no-compromise approach to digital sound production, which in the early 80s was a very new territory for manufacturers and musicians to explore. To my ears, these abecedarian digital devices have a purity and warmth that is particularly suited to simple ambient pieces of music such as those presented on 'Dawn'. In some ways, it was the dawning of a new era for electronic music in general, and one which I happily reexplore on this album'"

AJH Synth Introduces 2HP Voltage-controlled High Pass Filter

NEW MODULE! Low Fat - 2HP Voltage-controlled High Pass Filter - Features, Examples & User Guide
video upload by AJH Synth Official

"The LOW FAT is a new 2hp Eurorack module by AJH Synth, it's a High Pass filter, with frequency control by either manual pot, and/or external CV with attenuator. It's intended to compliment other filters, particularly low pass VCF modules, in practical tasks such as removing excessive low frequencies, for example when the bass is swamping a mix. However, because it can be voltage-controlled it can also be used musically as with any other VCF. When used in conjunction with a LP filter it forms a fully customisable band pass filter, allowing the range of passbands to be cherry-picked. This can be particularly useful in creating percussive sounds, such as snares and hats, but also on sequenced bass lines. Since it is only 2HP it's a great way to occupy one of those frustrating gaps in your eurorack modular case with something that is deceptively useful, and adds another dimension to the classic bass monster that is the Transistor Ladder Filter. Visit the module page on the official AJH Synth website: https://ajhsynth.com/LowFat.html

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

In analog VCO sound wave is generated by charging and discharging precision capacitor controlled by temperature compensated exponential converter, generated triangle wave then goes to wave shapers producing different wave forms. Such technology outputs supreme audio quality.

Pitch is tuned to standard 1 volt per octave, oscillator provides excellent tracking across 10 octaves, it can be tuned with precision of +-1 cent or 0.01 semitone."

EMEAPP SONIC TEST DRIVE: KORG SYNTHE-BASS SB-100 Feat. DON SLEPIAN

video upload by EMEAPP

"This little gem has to be one of our favorite purpose-built performance synths here at EMEAPP. It is the KORG Synthe-Bass SB-100, first released in 1975. Ideal for live performance, the SB-100 is a single oscillator bass synthesizer monster which offers an extremely powerful low pass filter "traveler" as well as a plethora of wave forms and modifiers to choose from to create monstrously fat and punchy bass tones. In this video, electronic music pioneer Don Slepian will demonstrate the SB-100 and the range that this compact little box can cover."

L-Fusion Dual Analog Triangle VCO 18HP Eurorack module review

video upload by LFusion Electronics

Update: Reworked video demo - Music first, explanation second.

The module is now available on Reverb.

"Introduction to Dual Triangle Core Voltage Controlled Oscillator – Fully analog 18HP Eurorack module, contains two identical VCOs, each oscillator is based on super stable analog SSI2130 VCO IC served by 46 opamps doing precision analog math. In total there are 34 analog ICs and 449 other parts.

In analog VCO sound wave is generated by charging and discharging precision capacitor controlled by temperature compensated exponential converter, generated triangle wave then goes to wave shapers producing different wave forms. Such technology produces supreme audio quality.

Pitch is tuned to standard 1 volt per octave, oscillator provides excellent tracking across 10 octaves, it can be tuned with precision of +-1 cent or 0.01 semitone, this is very precise as human ear can detect detuning from around 3 to 5 cents.

Module can be ordered on E-Bay:"

"Dual analog triangle core voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) 16HP Eurorack module with through zero FM modulation based on SSI2130 ICs that provide precision analog exponential converters, oscillator cores, waveshapers as well as high quality voltage controlled amplifiers for wave mixing. Each VCO in the module outputs sine, triangle, saw and square/pulse waves, also voltage controlled mix of them with sub oscillator an octave below controlled with integrated crossfader mixer.

Both oscillators can be modulated with exponential and linear FM, as well as through zero FM/PM and pulse width CV. To ease modulation for each oscillator we have added separate sine outputs with variable gain controlled with modulation knob.

Module also offers master crossfader to mix the outputs of the two oscillators, octave selector switch for each oscillator, as well as knobs for shape, pulse width, pitch and fine tuning. Module is designed using precision voltage reference and other high quality components to achieve +/-1ct (+/-0.01 semitone) tuning across 10 octaves- well below human ear pitch sensitivity which is around 3-5ct.

All inputs and outputs are ruggedized - able to handle rail to rail voltages +12V..-12V."

Introducing the Arithmophone

video upload by Arithmophone

"The Arithmophone is a new tool for exploring musical intervals from your computer, tablet or phone. It is a musical keyboard for touchscreen devices, you can play it directly from your browser using the built-in sounds or connect it to other instruments via MIDI.

To play the Arithmophone directly from your browser: https://chielzwinkels.net/arithmophon...

For more details and for using the MIDI version: https://chielzwinkels.net/arithmophone/"

"The Arithmophone is a new kind of musical keyboard, a rethinking of the way we interact with electronic music instruments. It provides easy access to many familiar and unfamiliar notes in colourful two-dimensional layouts and is a tool for exploring different kinds of tuning schemes, both just and tempered.

It currently exists in two forms:

The Arithmophone web app is a self-contained instrument that you can play from your computer, tablet or phone. It works best on touchscreen devices in landscape orientation (try an iPad or something of similar size if possible: the bigger the screen, the easier it is to play the keyboards).

The Arithmophone MIDI is a keyboard interface for controlling synthesizers. If you work with a DAW and software instruments, or if you have a hardware synthesizer you’d like to control through your (touchscreen) computer, this might be interesting for you.

Future ambitions for the Arithmophone project include a native iPad app with MIDI output as well as a hardware prototype.

I’ve made a manual that provides more details about the Arithmophone. I’ve also made an interactive guide to the building blocks of melody and harmony that explains some of the basic principles behind the Arithmophone in an accessible way."
