HAINBACH Recreates His Test Equipment Setup in a Eurorack Modular Synthesizer

Published on Feb 17, 2020 HAINBACH

"In which I solve my Eurorack crisis by using test equipment techniques to build a better modular synthesizer.

Me and my eurorack had our problems in the past year: I had built a system based around wavetables and powerful sequencing, but every time I sat down with it I made what I can only describe as stupid music: chatty happy pseudo-housy bouncy stuff that i could maybe use as a bed for a video, but nothing I really enjoyed. I had fun making it, but I did not like the results. All the sequencing power and tonal variation was too much, but also too little for the size of the system to make truly good tunes.

So I had a revelation: what if I build a system based on my favourite instrument now, my wall of test equipment. [check it out here]

So this is the system I put together from everything I had in my racks. Some modules were so long in there I had to drill the screws. It is a mini version of my test wall, and I feel super-inspired again to play with the eurorack. Translating what I have learned in the past year to the modular makes this feel like a very powerful yet small instrument, and I am back to making music with it that I actually enjoy.

Hainbach - Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen | tape loop ambient

Published on Jan 7, 2018 HAINBACH

"For a play I am scoring I recorded the first few bars of the vocal melody from Gustav Mahler's Song "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen" on a tape loop and went up to an old chapel in the Black Forest. Winds shook the camera, but it was a fitting atmosphere to perform and record this piece.

Exploring the Cosmic Beauty of the Elgam Carousel

video upload by HAINBACH

"Form changes function - the Elgam Carousel first appeared as part of a big organ. Elgam quickly realized that they could a make a standalone product out of this, for the more mobile musicians entertaining crowds at business and family functions. They set a trend - CRB and Elka followed with the Computerband 2000 and Wilgamat. These standalone keyboards can be called the first groove boxes. In this video I demo this cosmic sounding wonder and show real world applications in scoring.

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"We are proud to share Hélène Vogelsinger's "Whales Patch," her contribution to Sarah Belle Reid's Imaginative Listening Project.

The Imaginative Listening Project was an experimental collaboration between Sarah Belle Reid, Hainbach, Hélène Vogelsinger, and Tim Held in which they co-created a new piece of music. It premiered on April 29, 2021 on Sarah's YouTube channel and has been a favorite of ours since.

Each artist utilized Strega in their composition, and its unique character and voicing shines throughout the project. [see below for the complete Imaginative Listening Project video]

The Toy Sampler That Inspired Generations of Musicians

video upload by HAINBACH

"The Casio SK-1 was my very first electronic music instrument that allowed for some degree of experimentation. Its crunchy 8BIT sound got me hooked in a way that shaped my entire music career. 25 years later and with a bunch of SK-1 inspired instruments incoming on Kickstarter, I wanted to revisit this beautifully crappy sampler.

KOMA Strom Mobile Now Available

KOMA Strom Mobile - How does it work?Published on Oct 3, 2018 KOMA Elektronik

"Strom Mobile is a portable power solution for music makers and everyone who needs reliable voltage source at all times! The Strom Mobile transforms the output voltage of USB power banks (5V DC) to either 9V or 12V DC to power any (music) device running on those voltages. There are two independent channels which can output individually set voltages. The Strom Mobile includes an input current feedback system to save the user from exceeding the maximum output current of the USB powerbank in use.

1 unit consists of the Strom Mobile, 1 x USB B Cable and 2 x DC Cable and an English user manual. Please note: USB Powerbanks not included."

Previous posts...

And the press release:

BERLIN, 3 OCT 2018 - “After releasing the Field Kit and Field Kit FX, we received many requests from customers who want to be able to run their DC powered devices outside of their studios; at places where no power is available, like in an aircraft, while hiking through the mountains or simply with friends in the park.”
We developed the Strom Mobile, a standalone device that converts the 5V DC power from an USB power bank into clean low noise 9V or 12V DC power optimized to run all your music machines off the grid, for hours!

Using the Strom Mobile is very simple. It boasts two channels that both can handle a current draw up to 2.5A. You plug in an USB power bank to one of the channels (or both) and plug in the standard DC barrel connectors on the bottom side. You can select or 12V or 9V per channel. An orange light above the channel outputs shows you which output voltage you are using. Both channels also have a dedicated Current Monitor which shows you much current you are using, so you know when you reach the limit of your USB power bank and how many more devices you can add to your off the grid setup!

To get you started, Strom Mobile will be shipped with 1 x USB B cable (specifically designed version, to minimize voltage drop), 2 x DC-DC cables and User Manual. This runs one channel of the Strom Mobile. Additionally we offer a Strom Mobile Cable Pack, which includes 1 x USB B cable (specifically designed version, to minimize voltage drop), a 1-to-5 daisychain DC Cable, 2 x DC Cable and 1 polarity changing DC Cable.

We have been playing out and about with the Strom Mobile and its a great to be able to power our gear everywhere and to get inspired by the world around us. Here is a video of Hainbach and KOMA’s Wouter project ODD NARRATIVE, performing and recording at Berlin’s Tempelhof Flugfeld, all powered by Strom Mobile:

Strom Mobile together with Hainbach and Wouter

Premiered Sep 14, 2018 HAINBACH

[Odd Narrative is a project that I am running with Wouter Jaspers of KOMA Elektronik since 2017. We have pretty defined roles in how we make music - I create the scenery with tape loops and melodies, he creates the narrative trough his electro-acoustic setup. In this track which we created at my favorite place in Berlin, Tempelhof airport, he is playing two field kits, a synth I don't know, a tape loop and does cat/birdsong with his voice and Field Kit FX. I am playing a tape loop, TR606 and the OP1, mixed with the Field Kit FX. All is powered either by battery or the Koma Strom Mobile.]
The Strom Mobile is available from today onwards from the KOMA Elektronik website and through KOMA Elektronik dealers world-wide for a MRSP of 175EUR, the Strom Mobile Cable Pack for a MRSP of 35EUR."

HAINBACH: A Filter So Good I Kept It a Secret

video upload by HAINBACH

"For three years now I had the HP3581A Wave Analyzer in my studio, and I only told selected nerds about it. Now its time to show what this beautiful piece of test equipment can do when used for music. This and the UBM are the only pieces I got four of, simply because both are wonderful instruments.

Making Nuclear Music with Hainbach

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Join me for a rare opportunity to step into the incredible world of Hainbach at his studio in Berlin—filled with vintage nuclear test equipment he’s brilliantly turned into musical instruments… and plenty of other wild synthesizers!

Hainbach is known for making haunting, immersive soundscapes using everything from lab gear to tape loops to modular synths. His music feels like it's from another dimension—organic, rich, hypnotic and totally captivating. In this video, I explore his unique setup and we dive into a completely new palette of sounds together. It was inspiring to see how he breathes life into machines that were never meant to make music… and to try my hand at making "nuclear music" myself.

If you're into experimental sound design, synths, or just curious how scientific gear from the Cold War can become part of modern composition—this is something you’ve got to see (and hear)."

Syn-Ket: Portable and Powerful In 1963

video upload by HAINBACH

See the Synket label for more.

"In 1963, when synthesizers were wall-sized, Paolo Ketoff designed a portable yet sonically rich electronic instrument, the Syn-Ket. Created for film scoring and experimental musicians, the Syn-Ket became a classic of Italian film scoring, with Ennio Morricone being one of the early adopters. Only 8 or 9 where made, and I got to play the only one that is known to work @Museo del Synth Marchigiano .

A Track With: Collide 4 - Joranalogue and Hainbach's Test Equipment Module

video upload by sonicstate

"The ‪@joranalogue‬ / ‪@Hainbach‬ collaboration module - Collide 4 has been out for a little while, Hainbach is building a new live rig based on four of them as they encompass some of his beloved and enormous test equipment gear, but in a way more practical 20HP format.

In this video, our resident modular artist ‪@matthsmatthsmatths‬ uses Collide 4 as the sole sound source and puts together a piece using just that plus some additional processing. Using both the Filter and the Oscillator plus the 8 separate outputs, there's a lot of tonal variation."

How Ancient Electronics Write Music For HAINBACH

video upload by HAINBACH

"I was commissioned to write a piece for solo sax and electronics, something I have never done before. I decided I would approach the composition in the same way that I improvise with other musicians. I would compose as if I was on stage with the performer, Dr. Hall. The 'live' setup I created for this ended up writing a good part of the music for me, in a human/machine feedback loop.

The Surprising Musicality of a Telephone Line Simulator

video upload by HAINBACH

You can find the post HAINBACH mentions with pics here.

"Of all the instruments in my studio filled with many obscure things, this is the one that draws most peoples attention: the vintage telephone line simulator by Axel Electronics. It looks rather disco for a piece of test equipment, with its Battlestar Galactica golden color. In this video I put it through its many surprising musical applications.
