Kashif - Just Gotta Have You (Minimoog Bass Cover)

video by csmcrckrs

"I finally mustered up the courage to tackle one of Kashif's songs ... Kashif being one of the (if not THE) greatest and imo the holy grail of that Minimoog bass sound. Pretty happy with the results! Gear used: Minimoog for the bass, Nord Electro for e-piano, Roland Juno-60 and Sequential Prophet 5 for some synth parts, Fender Strat (JP) for the guitars. Drums, mixing and editing done in Ableton Live."

G-Storm Electro Patches for Roland Jupiter-6 [Demo #4]

video by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2021

Auditioning some original Roland Jupiter-6 patches available for download.
I had the good fortune of getting another Jupe in the studio.
The previous one that had Europa was sold.
This one is an earlier model, and was purchased dead.
After bringing it back to life and calibration...
Soon I had quickly re-programmed all my favorite sounds.

This video is unrehearsed, so lots of noodling.
Not dwelling too long on any one sound, to save your time.
So if you skip around, you might miss something. Just sayin' :D
Chord stabs, sweeps, bass, arpeggio, sound fx, leads.
Patch F7 is my template (default, or blank) patch.
Patch F8 is my scratch patch,
for when I can't remember what location I wanted to over-write.

The Roland Jupiter-6 has only rudimentary midi capability:
simple note on/off and patch change midi message only.
So, these patches can only be dumped all at once using the cassette interface.
BE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR OWN PATCHES BEFORE OVER-WRITING THEM!

Download the patches as an mp3 audio file on my blog:
https://gstormelectronica.blogspot.co...
I have used the JP-6 VERIFY function and confirm the audio file is good.

No additional effects or processing was used, aside from some normalization.
Video was made in great haste - so it's un-edited, some audio levels are clipping.
And sometimes scratchy volume pot."

Soundsauca Roland JD-990 Demos

"1993 must have been a vintage year. The Roland Super JD-990 is a classic digital synth with character.

Though the light from it's near 30 year old LCD may be fading (Photoshop works wonders!), the JD is still a much loved synthesizer today."

Playlist:

1. JD Worship - Roland JD-990 Demo
Spreading the JD-990 love! A little tune I put together with my Roland JD990. No external FX.

Heaven's Horns - a hi-pass filtered horn patch which fizzes down, gradually breaking across the stereo spectrum.

Dark Energy - a disturbing string patch that undulates with ghostly undertones,

Electric Eel - puts the JD990 chaos lfo to use with very short delay FX adding metallic feedback,

Binary Rain - a beautiful patch that sounds like flickering particles - it sounds different every time I play it,

Flangie Angie - a tightly flanged arpeggio sound with velocity sensitive attack, it can sound soft or hard with the mod wheel, tight and loose with velocity,

Magic Clouds - providing the heft down below with thick analog style sweeps,

JD Worship - The inspiration! A classic lead sound with the mod wheel controlling the dry/wet mix of the JD990 effects,

Lunar Mining - A repeating phased noise effect,

JD-8000 - I always wanted to make a supersaw on the JD-990. I finally found the trick, typically after I had bought a JP-8080 :) It does a pretty good impression,

Hazy Freeze - I love this sound! A melancholic lead that morphs into swirling clouds of audio,

Jungle Drums - Snappy self-oscillated S/H filter sweeps create a percussive sound. The JD has these wonderful sample and hold LFOs that slightly soften (slew) the harsh filter transitions. Later JV/XV series synths don't sound like this. The resonance also doesn't blow a hole in your ear drum when up high (always useful!)
2. Roland JD-990 - Superluminal Patches
A collection of 64 finely crafted Roland JD-990 patches. Take the deep dive into the 990’s synthesis, hearing its classic history along with futuristic sound impressions.

Find out more here: https://www.soundsauca.com/sounds/sup...

Superluminal represents a collection of Roland JD-990 patches that showcase my journey programming this awesome synth. From the cosmic interlude of the patch “Superluminal” to some seriously epic pads such as “Vista Grande”, the JD still has what it takes in 2020!

Sometimes I have to remind myself that its existence pre-dates 1993, with the slider infested JD-800 from 1991 and the D-50 from 1987!

I won’t pretend to be the first to praise this synthesizer, as I know I’m walking in the footsteps of great sound designers, but in my own way I hope to contribute to the JD’s legacy. The Roland JD-990 is a timeless classic with hidden depths to it even decades later.

One of the true great digital synthesisers.

Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiter | The Prince of Analoge 80s Power!

video by Espen Kraft

[Clarification in case the synth police shows up: The MKS-80 is closer to the Jupiter-6 than the Jupiter-8.

Internal chips:
Jupiter-6: 12x CEM3340 VCO, 6x IR3109 VCF, 6x CEM3360 Dual VCA
MKS-80 (to serial #511799/early models): 16x CEM3340 VCO, 8x IR3109 VCF, 8x CEM3360 Dual VCA (4 for X-Mod)
MKS-80 (serial #511800 and higher/later models): 16x IR3R03 VCO, 8x IR3R05 VCF/VCA, 4x CEM3360 Dual VCA (for X-Mod)

The Jupiter-8 also used a Roland IR3109 IC for the VCF, BA662 for the VCA, and IR3R01 for Envelopes.

Via wikipedia: "The voice architecture is almost identical to the Jupiter-6 synthesizer, the service manual states that "The module board of MKS-80 features the following in addition to that of JP-6, its brother module. 1) HPF. 2) Low boost circuit in the 2nd VCA. 3) DC supply current boost circuit (IC50)." The unit is fully capable of producing most of the Jupiter-6's signature sounds, in addition to many sounds unique to the MKS-80. In February 1985, Roland started producing a new revision of MKS-80, known as "Rev 5", that had no ties with any previous Jupiter's hardware, as it used a new generation of both Roland VCO's, VCA's and filter. The Rev 5 filter was also used in JX-8P, JX-10 and MKS-70 synthesizers."

And the following which I thought intersting:

"Confusion with Jupiter 8
In 1998, UK magazine Sound on Sound published an article about MKS-80. It contained a critical typo. Instead of referring to Jupiter 6, the comment about the rack version constantly referred to Jupiter 8, leading to serious confusion and even spreading myths across various online forums. However, once we read that article and replace numbers 8 and 6, the whole part of the article suddenly makes sense: 'The MKS80 delivered the entire Jupiter 6 wish-list and more, including a much larger memory and upgraded internal electronics. Now let's get one thing clear -- despite a few commentators postulating otherwise, the MKS80 had nothing to do with the Jupiter 8. Although there were ultimately to be two versions of the instrument (one with the Jupiter 6's Curtis oscillators, the other with custom chips developed by Roland themselves) both retained the architecture of the Jupiter 6, sounded identical to the Jupiter 6 and, apart from their many enhancements, were the rackmount module versions of the Jupiter 6.'." Also see this post for The Story of the Roland JUPITER-8 & JUPITER-6.]

--- That said, here is the description for the video above:

"Roland MKS-80 - the Super Jupiter. Rolands last analog VCO synth and one that packs all the punch of the mighty Jupiter 8 and 6 into one box

With 8 voices, 16 VCOs, fast envelopes, cross modulation, sync, 2 ADSRs, a very flexible LFO and velocity and pressure sensitivity over Midi, the Super Jupiter was the professional musicians dream module in the mid 80s. Used on countless hit records.

Through the years the MKS-80 came out in a Rev.4 and a Rev.5 and the debate over which one sounds the best never seems to stop. I don't care about that at all. The versions used in this video are both Rev.5, but as I actually compare these to a Jupiter 8 here, no one should tell me that the Rev.5 can't sound like it. It DOES sound like it, down to 99% and that's enough for me.

A big thanks to Joakim Tysseng for the loan of the Jupiter 8 and a big thanks to Brynjulf Blix for the one MKS-80 and the MPG-80 programmer. Anders Jensen has as always been very kind too and thanks for the other MKS-80 Anders, as well and for all the driving!

The other MKS-80 programmer I use here is from Retroaktiv and that's a new one. I did a demo of that just a couple of videos before this so check that out if you want to."

Roland Promars - FIVE MINUTES WITH

video by sonicstate

"Battery Operated Orchestra (BOO) have a nice collection of instruments, we had a glimpse when we shot an interview with them for the launch of their album "Yesterday, Tomorrow and You"

Chris from the band kindly recorded this session to give us all a flavour of what it can sound like - which as it happens is pretty tasty.

The Roland Promars is one of the Compuphonic range of instruments that has some basic computer control - eg patch memory (10 user, 10 preset). Its very simillar to the Jupiter 4 and has often been considered a monophonic version of that. However it has 2 VCOs compared to the JP's 1
Chris takes us through some of its unique sonic capabilities."

"Mice in the Attic" & "Love on a Mousetrap" - Yamaha RS7000 + Wavestate + Minilogue XD + Wavestate

Patrick Manderson

"'Mice in the Attic' - 'Love on a Mousetrap'

Recorded live early evening on December 18, 2020 using a Yamaha RS-7000 MIDI Sequencer and a room full of MIDI synthesizers. The sequencer was painstakingly programmed to play all instruments as well as automations, modulation, volume & patch changes. The instruments ran through 3 mixers and a rack of compressors and outboard effects. All parts were mixed and recorded to stereo tracks in a single take. This video was recorded early evening on winter solstice December 21 and edited days later.

The first half, "Mice in the Attic", was arranged on the RS-7000 Sequencer sometime in early 2019 and left without any ideas on how to finish it. At that time it only included the great guitar-like patch on the Korg EX-8000, a Bass Station II patch and a kick drum from the Boss DR660. Early this Fall, the second half, "Love on a Mousetrap", was arranged and paired up with "Mice".

This music was made with a symphony of Korg Synths. Notably the EX-8000 played a very dynamic guitar-like patch through an Alesis Quadraverb from beginning to end. The MS-2000 played various parts, mainly the femenine voice and the Radias played percussions and the masculine voice.

The voice performances on the MS-2000 and Radias were painstakenly edited on The Sequencer to get the articulations *just right*. Lots of pitch, modwheel, velocities and volume/expression CCs were used and getting them right in the basic event editor on The Sequencer was quite tedious. These parts were some of the most difficult and time consuming edits I've ever had to do.

The Wavestate toggled between two versions of the same patch of strings and choir sounds coming in at the start of "Love on a Mousetrap". It also plays the *heavenly* sequence at the end.

The two Minilogues switched quite a few patches - most notably the XD played a wonderful User oscillator named 'Pluck'.

Layering in FM tones at just the right moments was the Yamaha TX81Z - also ran through the Alesis Quadraverb.

The Roland JP-8080 plays *the rise* at the intro and a few quiet pads on the second half. The XV-5080 filled in a few parts emphasizing other instruments.

The Roland TR8S alternated between 3 separate kits to cover the percussion needed on the various sections. One of the kits used a master high pass filter to give it a Casio-like rhythm tone

Dave Smith is represented in not so obvious ways using the Prophet 6 and REV 2. The REV 2 being ambidextrous play 2 patches in a split when needed.

Much care and time was spent on the mix. Two line mixers and a Mackie 1604 VLZ3 routed all the synths and compressors including the Alesis 3630, Behringer MDX 1400, Art Pro Tube Channel, Art Pro VLA II and a Drawmer 1978. May takes were made. Whenever anything needed to be adjusted the entire piece had to be recorded again from scratch.

All MIDI ran through the MOTU MIDI Timepiece MTP AV.

Video was shot using an iPhone 8 through a magnifying glass. Editing was done in Davinci Resolve 15."

Sonicware Liven 8 Bit Warps - Incredibly Dark Cinematic Pad

ChrisLody

"I feel very lucky that the lovely people over at Sonicware have sent me a Liven 8Bit Warp to write some promotional material with. I'm still exploring what it can do but I've been very impressed so far. It's available here: https://sonicware.jp/

So here I'm exploring the FM engine to make pad sounds, a man can it do the dirtiest pad sounds! It has only a few controls for the FM engine, 6 in total if you don't count the common controls for envelope etc, but that still packs in the unusual ability to control the modulators oscillator frequency with an LFO, that's what you're hearing as the tone shifts around slowly as I play.

The only reverb used here is the built in 'INF' reverb which is quite bright so that helps the top end shine. To my ear this almost ends up sounding organic in nature, which is pretty special considering it's one of the least analog piece of equipment I could have built this pad sound on."

Jupiter 8, LinnDrum, Pro-One '80s sequencing

SynthMania

"After the '70s "POD", I'm making an '80s pod in the studio. Next, the '90s pod. The LinnDrum triggers the Pro-One's sequencer. The JP-8 plays chords. (a Garfield synchronizer syncs the Linn-Drum to the Pro-One)"

"Diseased" Roland JP-8000 Classic Analog Modeling Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Hadn't heard of this one before.

"It has the JP-8000 desease. Apparently, this is a very common problem. When you first switch it on, the output is quiet and distorted. However, after about 5-7 minutes (a little warm-up time), it roars into life and stays like this until the next switch-off and cool down. Apparently, this is due to a specific capacitor which costs about 80p and a bit of solder, but this is much beyond my capabilities. This problem started not long after I had it and has never gotten any worse or let me down."
