KeyStep Pro Workflow Firmware Update 1.3

What’s new in KeyStep Pro v1.3?

A set of workflow improvements designed to streamline your creative flow. Let’s take a closer look…
MIDI channels per project

You can now determine specific tracks’ output MIDI channels per project, for easy navigation of multiple MIDI devices in performances and sessions.

MIDI input enhancements
MIDI In information has also been expanded so that pitch wheel, mod wheel and sustain messages are transmitted to their respective tracks/channels.

Expanded Mod CV functions
The individual Mod CV outputs can now send data using either the velocity, aftertouch, or modwheel output values.

Transpose refinements
Transpose now also applies to arpeggios currently playing, and Transpose Compensation keeps newly-recorded notes in key with the sequence when transpose is cleared.

Tie / Rest behaviour

The Tie / Rest button’s functionality has been improved to allow extending steps in a more intuitive and familiar way.

Workflow upgrades
We’ve expanded a number of workflow functions, including improved Quick Editing, instantly switching drum mutes off, streamlined page erasing, intuitive note overlapping, and more.

Streamlined utility functions
We’ve updated a number of essential utility functions, including Factory Reset, MIDI channel shortcuts, refined screen & LED visual feedback, and much more.

Various bug fixes
Based on user feedback and extensive testing, we’ve improved a number of functions to make KeyStep Pro more reliable and efficient.

Polyphonic: Using the Keystep Pro for 4-Voice Polyphony in Eurorack Modular - with AJH Synth MiniMod

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This video demonstrates the Arturia Keystep Pro controlling a MiniMod system in polyphonic mode, and show's how to enable up to 4 voices of polyphony on the Keystep Pro controller keyboard. The MiniMod system uses just 4 VCO's, envelope generators, VCF's and VCA's to supply 4 simple, single-oscillator voices, which are then complimented by either an LFO or noise source to add interest to the sound. This really is about as spartan as you can get for a modular 4-voice setup, so adding further modules would greatly expand it's sound palette, but this is just a proof of concept. Since it's fully modular, even with such a simple voice structure a surprising range of sounds can be achieved.

This was partly inspired by the earliest polyphonic synths, which were initially huge modular systems controlled by polyphonic keyboard controllers, and then the first polyphonic Oberheim synths, which controlled 4 or 8 individual monophonic synth voice modules individually (the superb-sounding SEM), each needing to be setup and tuned. However, this meant that each voice was free to be whatever the user wanted - similar or completely different than the others, something conventional analogue polysynths can't do.

The Gemini 2412 is used here as it has extensive multi-mode filter options, and conveniently contains 2 fully-featured VCF's per module, but also since it is directly based on the filter from the classic SEM module. A pair of Contour Generators serves as a simple and convenient dual envelope per module, although here they are shared for both VCF and/or VCA.
It's unlikely that many would buy a complete modular system purely to use as a polyphonic synth, but as your system grows it may eventually provide sufficient modules to be used in a poly configuration, even just as 2 voices, such as here: [posted here]

POWER: This module setup and PSU is just an example of the concept - it isn't necessary to arrange the modules in this way, and you should always ensure your power supply is sufficient to provide significantly more power to your selection of modules than is needed, across the +12V, -12V, and 5V power lines. For example, in this setup I'm using roughly 400mA on the -12V rail, but the PSU only provides 500mA to -12V, so this is pushing it a little too close to the limit than is ideal. Modulargrid.net is a great tool to use for designing your system and calculating your power needs, but also consult your PSU's documentation for advice on power usage.

MODULES USED:
Vintage Transistor Core VCO x4
Gemini 2412 x2
Contour Generators x2
Discrete Cascaded VCA x4
Dual LFO + VCA x1 (optional)
Entropic Doom x1 (as a noise source, optional)
Precision Voltages (as an offset for Gemini D-FCV, optional)
V-Scale x1 (as a buffered multiple, optional)

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Étude No.2 - Arbhar/Lúbadh/Morphagene/Desmodus Versio/Mimeophon/Rampage/Muxlicer

Omri Cohen

"If you like what I do and want to support my work, consider joining me on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/omricohen

Here are some patch notes:
--------------------------
- Arbhar is set to wavetable mode and the Keystep Pro is sending pitch information to it.
- I'm using a looping function from Rampage to modulate the spread, and the other function is being triggered by the Keystep Pro, and it's opening the density of Arbhar.
- I'm also clocking Muxlicer with the Keystep Pro, which is sequencing the position of the wavetable.
- Arbhar is set to have its built-in reverb.
- I recorded Arbhar into Morphagene and Lubadh.
- Morphagene is playing the recording one octave lower and is going through Desmodus Versio.
- Lubadh is playing a small segment of the recording and its starting point is being modulated by the MIN and MAX outputs of Rampage. It's then going through the Mimeophon."

Superbooth 20HE: Arturia Keystep Pro with Sébastien

Published on Apr 24, 2020 sonicstate

"One person we always enjoy catching up with at the tradeshows is Sebastien from Arturia. So we were happy when he agreed to talk to us from isolation and show off the Keystep Pro. We do actually have one in for review but Nick just hasn’t had the time to look at it yet considering everything that has been going on…

In this video Sebastien takes us through the Keystep Pro and gives a run down of one set up using the Micro Freak, Drum Brute Impact and a vast array of Eurorack modules. He starts by building up a beat in record mode then adding everything else in real time to build a composition in a couple of minutes."

Lunar - Ambient Noise 🎄 (Arp 2600 m // Waldorf M + Red Panda Particle 2 // Arturia Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"For the last video of 2023, I really wanted to spotlight the raw sound of the amazin ARP 2600 M 🤩
So throughout the whole track, you'll only hear the sound coming directly from the ARP 2600 M without any external effects, though I did use its onboard spring reverb (+ a bit of EQ/comp where used for mixing purposes).
Contrary to my previous (which was the first) video featuring the ARP which was an uptempo track, no beats or kick here! Only the ARP and the Waldorf M (+ Particle granular delay).
The same track from the Keystep Pro is sequencing both synths.

As you can see, I use some patching in this one for the ARP:
 - The VCF output is going through its preamp input to make the distorted sound you gradually hear (it's being played in parallel of the dry sound coming out from VCF output)
 - I also used the LFO to modulate the filter and pulse width of oscillator 2
 - I did did some patching as well, in order to play portamento with one of the ARP's oscillator (using the voltage processor "Lag Time")

* Hardware used *

// SYNTH:
 - Korg ARP 2600 M (semi modular analog synth) - RAW sound
 - Waldorf M (8-voice hybrid digital and analog wavetable) + Red Panda Particle v2 (digital granular delay)

// SEQUENCER:
 - Arturia Keystep Pro"

Étude No.9 - Freak/Rampage/Muxlicer/ReduXer/Mimeophon/BIA/Desmodus Versio

Omri Cohen

You can find additional resources from Omri Cohen at https://www.patreon.com/omricohen

Here are some patch notes:
---------------------------------------------
- I have Freak set with a built in dual VCA, and both channels have the resonance all the way up.
- The Keystep Pro is triggering both sections of Rampage, which are opening the VCA of Freak.
- I have S&H from the 1U Noise Tools modulating the fall times of one channel, and the Muxlicer sequencing the fall times of the other channel.
- Freak is going to ReduXer from VoicAS, and from there to the Mimeophon.
- I have S&H coming from the Disting modulating both the color and repeats controls of the Mimeophon.
- The Keystep Pro is also triggering the Basimilus, which is going to the Desmodus Versio with the regen all the way up so it's side chained to the Basimilus.
- I'm clocking the Mimeophon, the Disting, and Muxlicer with the Keystep Pro.

Sky Fly 💫 (Vermona Perfourmer + Lethargy + H9 + Particle + Bigsky + Pill // Tanzbar // Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"Wishing you a happy New Year for 2023 ! May it be filled with music 🎶, peace 🕊️ and love💕!
After experimenting during the last month of 2022 by publishing 7 'Shorts' let's start 2023 with a more than 2-minute video in order to compensate a bit this special month of December 😅

So for this one, only the Vermona Perfourmer was used for the synth parts (Bass, Arp & Pads) and MFB Tanzbar for the drum parts, with both instruments sequenced by the Arturia Keystep Pro.

* Hardware used *
- SYNTH: Vermona Perfourmer
- BASS (Voice1) Dry
- ARP (Voice2) + Dreadbox Lethargy (Analog Phaser) + Eventide H9 Max (Vintage Delay engine)
- PADS (Voices3&4) + Red Panda Particle 2 (Granular Delay / Pitch Shifting Pedal) + Strymon Bigsky (Reverb) + Pill (ducking pedal, triggered by the kick from Tanzbar)
- DRUMS: MFB Tanzbar
- SEQUENCER: Arturia Keystep Pro"

Étude No.6 - Arbhar/BIA/Mimeophon/Magneto/Freak/Desmodus Versio/Muxlicer/Rampage

Omri Cohen

"If you like what I do and want to support my work, consider joining me on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/omricohen Here are some patch notes:
----------------------------
- I have Arbhar set to the delay mode, and I'm modulating the delay times/amount with S&H from the 1U Noise Tools module.
- I'm triggering a grain with the Keystep Pro, which also triggers at the same time the S&H so with each grain, the delay is different.
- This is then going to the Desmodus Versio, and I'm using the S&H to modulate its size.
- I'm sequencing the Basimilus, the kick drum, also with the Keystep Pro, and I'm splitting the signal once to the Mimeophon, and once to the Disting in the mixer algo.
- I'm triggering the Muxlicer with the same trigger as the Basimilus, and it's sequencing the wet amount of the Mimeophon.
- The snare is coming from Freak, which is loaded with the Braids firmware, and it's also being sequenced by the Keystep Pro.
- I'm splitting it as well once to the Disting, and also once to Magneto for some short delays.
- The mix from the Disting is going to both inputs of Rampage for some extra grit."

Roland System 100m | Nexus

Published on May 8, 2020 Alex Ball

Break down video further below.

"Following on from the 'closer look' video [posted here], here's a full performance with the Roland System 100m from 1979.

I tried to demonstrate the versatility of a setup like this by making things like full drum kits, squelchy basses, phased and delayed textures with sequenced filter mod, synth guitars, ring mod nastiness, audio rate down-sampled formants, voltage processed LFOs, lush Jupiter-esque polyphony, a singing and gliding lead, sounds that can't really be described and more.

Many sounds were also created in groups together at one time because you can!

The eagle eyed among you may have noticed that there were actually five 191-J cabs used in the video, although only four at one time.

Across those cabs we had the following modules (and duplicates thereof) and I used every single one of them at some point in the demo.

110 VCO / VCF / VCA
112 Dual VCO
121 Dual Filter
130 Dual VCA
131 Output Mixer
132 Voltage Processor / Mixer
140 Dual Envelope / LFO
150 Ring Mod / S&H / Noise / LFO
165 Dual Portamento
172 Phaser / Audio Delay / Gate Delay / LFO
182 Sequencer
184 Polyphonic 4CV Keyboard*

The only original modules not present are:
173 Signal Gate / Multi
174 Parametric EQ

*The original 184 keyboard arrived in the mail right when I was finishing recording and filming this track, so you only see me using it in one section at the end. I thought I'd explain this for those of you wondering why I used the Arturia KeyStep Pro for almost all of the keyboard duties instead of the original top-of-the-line keyboard. (Side note - the new KeyStep is fantastic).

Other gear used:
Roland RE-201 Space Echo
Roland RE-5 Digital Space Echo
Arturia KeyStep Pro
Ibanez RM-80 Mixer
Ibanez Jem 7DBK
Alvarez ABT60 Baritone Acoustic
TR-808 clap sample
TR-606 Hi-Hats
Oberheim DXa (final choruses)

Mixed by Jakob at Sonic Peak Studio. He breaks down the mix of this track here:"

A Magical Night in Madrid: Synthesizer Symphony Under the Stars

video upload by Al Platino

"Last night, in the heart of Madrid, a sonic spectacle resonated between the walls of the imposing Almudena Cathedral and the majestic Royal Palace. With the stage set between these two iconic landmarks, I delivered a performance inspired by the rich history, culture, and spirituality of the Spanish capital.

Using the Nord Lead 4R, Elektron Octatrack, and Arturia Keystep Pro, I aimed to capture and convey the essence of Madrid, a city that has deeply inspired me since my first visit. Each instrument played a crucial role in creating this mystical and vibrant atmosphere.

The Nord Lead 4R, with its modulation capabilities and vast sound palette, allowed me to evoke the rich tones of the cathedral bells, mixed with the bustling life of Madrileño streets. I could mimic everything from the gentle tinkle of morning bells to the powerful toll marking the passage of time.

On the other hand, the Elektron Octatrack acted as my sonic canvas, enabling me to sample and manipulate sounds in real-time. I recorded snippets of Madrid's ambient noise: laughter, footsteps, the gentle hum of conversations on terraces, and the distinctive sounds of traffic, to later weave them into a rich musical tapestry that underpinned my performance.

Finally, the Arturia Keystep Pro was the bridge that tied all these elements together. With its sequences and control capabilities, I could steer the direction and flow of the music, adding melodies and harmonies inspired by flamenco, fandango, and other traditional Spanish rhythms.

As the first chords echoed, a visual projection unfolded on the façade of the Almudena Cathedral, showcasing scenes from Madrid's history, from ancient times to the bustling metropolis it is today.

As the night progressed, attendees were taken on a sensory journey. From the dark mystery of the Spanish Civil War, through the cultural renaissance of the Movida Madrileña, to the vibrant pulse of modern Madrid.

I deeply thank everyone who joined me on this sonic journey. It was an honor to share my love for music and Madrid in such a spectacular setting. Here, under the starlit sky and between buildings that have witnessed centuries of history, we all felt the eternity of the moment.

Until next time, Madrid. Thank you for the inspiration. 🎹🌌🎶"

If you like what I do and want to support my work, consider joining me on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/omricohen

I created a document full of patching techniques and ideas that I will continue updating - https://www.patreon.com/posts/documen...
Here's a sneak peek of it - https://bit.ly/patchdocexample

Here are some patch notes:
------------------------------------------------
- One sequence of the Keystep Pro is sequencing the Basimilus, and another sequence that has a different length is sequencing its Morph function, and one more sequence, again, with a different length, is sequencing its register.
- I'm using one channel of Lubadh in delay mode, and it's patched together with the Aux in and out to add some feedback. This channel is going through the Desmodus Versio.
- The second channel of Lubadh is recording this, and it's receiving a trigger for record and erase from another sequence of the Keystep Pro, and again, this sequence has a different length.
- I'm sending this channel to Microcell for some reverb before it goes into Freak for distortion. From there, it goes to the Mimeophon for extra space.
