The Grainmakers Playlist

video uploads by Cinematic Laboratory

"This playlist features granular eurorack modules that all need to process the same reference sample. I hope this gives a good impression of what the modules can do for you. They're all different, they're all great."

Playlist:

1. Grainmakers Playlist Introduction
I've been working on a huge video over the last few days and when I reached 30 minutes I decided to break it up into a playlist. This is cool! I can make updates and add new modules as they emerge. It's not supposed to be the ultimate grain guide, but it's cool to hear all modules chew on the same sample and hear what comes out. It's easy to be impressed by a bad module with a great soundsource, or underwhelmed by an amazing module that need to process something unworthy of its grains. So it all comes down to what they have to offer. And there are no bad modules. It's great fun to hear how a standard concept can turn into completely different experiences. So this is just a short playlist introduction.
2. Mutable Instruments Beads | Grainmakers Playlist
In this episode, Beads needs to chew on a reference performance.
Beads is an effect, but it can process an internal wavetable synth on its own.
3. Qu-Bit Nebulae V2 | Grainmakers Playlist
Our next contender in the playlist is the Qu-Bit Nebulae. It may be a bit underappreciated, but wow. A unique feature is elastic audio for time stretching.
4. Qu-Bit Mojave | Grainmakers Playlist
Next, Mojave needs to chew on Sebastian Lexer's grand piano.
5. Loopers | Lubadh & Morphagene | Grainmakers Playlist
Loopers are often confused with granular synths, especially with the Morphagene. Loopers don't grain or spray, they're digital tape machines.
Sometimes, when you think you're into grains, you'd actually been looking for a looper. It's time to show the difference, so they're an important addition to the lineup.
6. 1010Music BitBox MK2 | Grainmakers Playlist
The BitBox may not seem an obvious choice for granular processing, but if this playlist were a competition, then BitBox MK2 would be the King of the Grainfields. Granular processing offers limited CV support in the current firmware, but the sheer processing power is almost an insult to the other modules. Fortunately, it can't offer the hands-on experience like dedicated modules.
7. Error Instruments x TINRS Brinta | Grainmakers Playlist

8. Melotus Versio | Grainmakers Playlist
It's a Versio. What can I say. Awkward, special, amazing and breathtaking. It's unique feature is no pitch control. While this sounds like a flaw, it's almost a musthave feature when you run notes, effects and chords through it. Don't touch the melody. Just make it grain. Top 3 module in my list. And if it doesn't fit your needs, install a different firmware! If you own a different Versio, give it a shot. Nothing creates techno atmospheres and backdrops like Melotus.
9. MISO Cornflakes | Grainmakers Playlist
This is the last one for today :). Still a few more modules to cover, but it's already a great list. Here's MISO Cornflakes chewing on the Lexer piano. Again, it's a totally different experience, because Cornflakes adds special harmonizing features and stacking of grains. No other module has it - as far as I know. It can make wonderful new sounds from something familiar.
10. Instruo Arbhar V2 | Grainmakers Playlist
I already made plenty of Arbhar videos, but this is the second V2 video. In this playlist, all granular modules in my collection need to process the same audio file so it's easy to figure out what they do. Now it's Arbhar's turn.
11. Clouds & Clones | Grainmaker Playlist
This playlist would not be complete without a tribute to Clouds, one of the first modules in Eurorack that brought grains to the case. Clouds was launched in 2015 and discontinued in 2017. But that wasn't the end of it. It's been revived and extended in many forms, making it one of the most successful modules in Eurorack even today. From a techical perspective, Clouds is no match for the modern grainmakers in this playlist. But from the perspective of production value it's still a super useful module, especially if you manage to install the Parasite firmware. It's easy to forget that granular synthesis doesn't need big buffers. Sometimes a small 1 sec buffer is exactly what you need to get that desirable classic granular stream.
12. Combinations | Grainmaker Playlist
I got a question if Lubadh and Mojave would make a good combo. I had no idea. I figured this whole playlist is still 1-dimensional. So I patched these two up and then and I just had to make this video! I am still using the reference track so you get a good idea of how big the sonic playground becomes when you combine any looper with any granular engine. Results may vary, but wow. The bottom of the Rabbit Hole simply has a doorway to the next one. And it always gets deeper than the one before.
13. ADDAC 112 | Grainmakers Playlist
I may have unintentionally kept the best for last. The 112 combines a looper and granular engine in one big module. This is the last entry in the playlist.
The 112 will return soon for a dedicated video with some carefully selected samples to play with.
14. I missed a few | Grainmakers Playlist
After finishing the 112 video I was confident I covered enough 'grainmakers' in this playlist. I doublechecked if Disting EX and Phonogene should be in it, but no. The third one definitely needs to be on it! It doesn't show up when you search for 'granular' on ModularGrid, but it immediately went to my personal top #2.

10 mins of Buchla Modular Synth, Looping & Vocals 🚀⚡️GSG SYNTHON 3 Year Anniversary Special

video upload by The Galaxy Electric

"Full video performance available inside THE VORTEX for VOYAGER VIP & COUNCIL Members Only: https://thegalaxyelectric.com/jointhe...

Fun patching with the Buchla inspired 200 series system. We used a combo of modules but some of the stars of the show were the 259 Programmable Complex Waveform Generator. We have the1979 Stereo Microsound Processor getting a lot of love (Mutable Instruments Clouds based). We're usually sampling either bits of cassette tape recordings or the radio. This is the module's strong suit. Very deep vibes in deep space, this one. Don't forget to come back....or not...

Big thanks to our friends and fellow artists the Golden Shrimp Guild for the opportunity and venue for this lovely experience."

Superbooth 2023: AE Modular Break The 100 Modules Barrier

video upload by sonicstate

"AE Modular made a strong impression at Superbooth 2023 with their extensive collection of modules, surpassing the milestone of 100 different modules. Robert, representing AE Modular, expressed his pride in the development and the growing inspiration from the community. Notably, they introduced the Reins and Cirrus modules, which are faithful clones of Mutable Instruments' Rings and Clouds respectively, offering a classic ambient duo in their format. Additionally, AE Modular unveiled a prototype sample player module that allows users to play 8-bit WAV files directly from a micro SD card, providing loop options and crossfading. Another exciting development is the introduction of a high-quality aluminum case, designed by Tom from KUA, which offers sturdiness, expandability, and the ability to remove modules on the fly without screws. AE Modular's commitment to affordability is also evident in their micro modules line, which provides simpler functionalities in a compact form factor. 'Moonlight Sonata' - Eurorack Modular Rendition

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!
#modular #eurorack #moonlightsonata

This time around all sounds that are being heard, come from the modular system, but the entire sequence is comprised of 4 monophonic MIDI tracks inside of Ableton. Each of the tracks has a CV Instrument plugin from the CV tools package. I am using my Expert Sleepers ES-9, which is a DC-coupled interface, which allows me to send clock data, CV, and Gate outputs directly from Ableton into eurorack modular without a need of a MIDI interface. I am using 4 monophonic tracks because the interface has 8 DC-coupled outputs, which are being used as follows:
1- Gate for melody track 1
The first gate out is going into the first input on the Ornament & Crime Digital Multi-function module in 4 x EG mode, which gives it 4 variable-clock envelope generators with a visual oscilloscope. From there, gate output from o_C goes into Mutable Instruments Plaits as a trigger input. The output of plaits goes through the first channel of Qu-Bit Tone for filtering, and then into the first channel on a quad VCA, and then into the first audio output on the ES-9.
2- Pitch/CV for melody track 1
The first pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Mutable Instruments Plaits, to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s first monophonic track.
3- Gate from melody track 2
The 2nd gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the Strum input on the Mutable Instruments Rings, which is the 2nd oscillator in this patch. From Rings we have the identical signal patch as on the first track, but on the 2nd channel of each subsequent module. (Filter → VCA → Out)
4- Pitch/CV for melody track 2
The second pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Mutable Instruments Rings, to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s second monophonic track.
5- Gate for melody track 3
The 3rd gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the CV input on 3rd channel of my VCA: Mutable Instruments Veils. Then it goes right into the audio output 3 on the ES-9.
6- Pitch/CV for melody track 3
The third pitch/CV out is going into the 1V/Oct input on the Instruō Cš-L (Dual Complex Oscillator), to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s third monophonic track.
7- Gate for melody track 4
The 4th gate out is going into the Ornament & Crime’s (o_C) second envelope generator. Then it goes into the CV input on the 4th channel of my VCA: Mutable Instruments Veils. Then it goes right into the audio output 4 on the ES-9.
8- Pitch/CV for melody track 4
The fourth pitch/CV out is going into the second channel’s 1V/Oct input on the Instruō Cš-L (Dual Complex Oscillator), to control the pitch of it, directly from Ableton’s third monophonic track.

Now we get into the surround and miscellaneous modulations, which control the piece’s stereo movement, giving it spaciousness and an emotional feel. The output from Mutable Instruments Plaits is split, the first route is going just like it is described in the first 2 points above. The split output is going into the Mutable Instruments Clouds (which is being heavily modulated by the Divkid øchd module (8 drifting LFO). And then from there, it is going stereo l/r out into the ES-9s extra inputs. The Rings output follows the same convention, as it is also being split, but it on the other hand goes through Instruō Arbhar, and then into Instruō Lúbadh for additional processing. The stereo output from Arbhar is going into the ES-9, and one of the outputs from there is being split to also go into the Lúbadh. (Arbhar is a granular processor, and Lúbadh is a digital 2-track reel-to-reel tape machine)

Additional multi-band compression, EQ, and Limiting are done in the post inside of Ableton on the Bus level to minimize the unnecessarily large amount of processing, for a clear modular tonality.

📀Prophet 10 & MFB Tanzbar Jam💾Unhandled Exception

video upload by

"Hola 🌳

This jam is over a year old but I had not found the right spot to release it earlier in 2022. I made some final adjustments to the mix and video now, and I still really enjoy the piece and the energy of it⚡️

The jam was initially set up using the prophet, keystep, tanzbar, and the Strymon Magneto, Monsoon, and Meris Polymoon as effects pedals. The main and secondary prophet melodies are engaged on the keystep live on separate tracks in order to mute/unmute them. The "bass line" is coming from the Tanzbar toms controlled by the Keystep. Wanted to keep it longer so some additional layers of Prophet pads and ambiance were added in Reaper to spice up the arrangement.

Ambient Explorations pt.37 (Instruō Cruïnn)

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching! #modular #eurorack #ambient
In this episode of 'Ambient Explorations', I am using the recently-released Instruo Cruinn, which is a wonderfully sounding stereo through-zero phase modulated oscillator. All the stereo elements that repeat over time, which are sawtooth waves, are coming from this module, in case you wanted to know what it sounds like. It is being supported by its fellow family members: Instruo Arbhar for stereo granular elements; Instruo Lubadh, which is receiving the summing output from Cruinn, and slowing down or speeding up randomly by being modulated by Instruo/Divkid øchd; Instruo CS-L, which is going through Mutable Instruments Clouds to create a nice yet weird background texture (it sounds like people playing violins in the higher register); and Instruo Lion which is taking care of most of the modulation routings within the system.

☄️The Surface of Jupiter🚀 ~ OB6 | Clouds | Magneto | CXM 1978

video upload by Postmodern Machine

"Hey 🌿

A month or so ago I visited a friend's farm and took some shots that I really loved with the Fuji X-T30. I decided to pair these with an outdoor ambient experiment featuring the looping mode on the Strymon Magneto 🎧

The Sequential OB-6 is fed into the Monsoon (Mutable Clouds Copy) for a bit of texture, then into the Strymon Magneto in sound-on-sound looper mode. The dry signal is fairly low and the loop is quite long (I believe more than 30 seconds). The loop is slowly decaying and degrading. It's such a slow degradation that my previous performance is a bed under the final performance when it starts. I was going for something lazy, hazy, and noisy.

For some polish, the CXM 1978 is run in an effects loop from the modular on a static and drifty setting. It was a joy to perform this. I just had to be careful not to play any dissonant notes which would then be looped indefinitely 🤯

I performed and filmed the jam on my back porch. I have been loving setting up outside and creating with the sounds of nature around me🌱

Cool Ambient Generative Patch on the Pittsburgh EP-420 System

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!

Made this pretty complex patch the other day, and managed to record 20 minutes of it, because that is how much my computer allows to record before it crashes my computer, so 20 minutes it is. Hopefully, in the future, I will be able to create longer generative videos. For stereo effects, I am mainly using 2 Black Hole DSPs by Erica Synths, Instruo Arbhar, and Mutable Instruments Clouds. 1979 CMP - Powerful DSP Effects for Buchla Systems

Pitch Shifter test video upload by Todd Barton

"Initial encounter with the 1979 Compact Microsound Processor. Some fun now!! It is using the Pitch Shift/Time Stretcher mode.

My Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/synthtodd"

via 1979

Powerful DSP effects for Buchla systems.

The CMP is a powerful stereo effects processor which expands significantly on the original Clouds by Mutable Instruments. Dedicated controls for previously hidden functions, additional CV inputs, four memory banks for saving samples, and a digital CV attenuation schema make this one of the most unique audio processing modules in the Buchla ecosystem. Eight DSP modes are available which cover granular synthesis, pitch shifting, glitch-inspired audio looping, and spectral processing along with unique digital reverb and delay effects.

The CMP is a compact version of the Stereo Microsound Processor with the same basic functionality. An upgraded digital brain allows the CMP to support the "Superparasites" firmware which includes eight DSP algorithms. This firmware combines DSP code from the original Clouds by Mutable Instruments, Clouds Parasites by Matthias Puech, and two additional modes by Julius Kammerl. To change the DSP mode, press the TIME switch (upper left) for a few seconds and then press the switch to cycle through the list of algorithms below. The TIME LED will blink slowly to indicate the current algorithm, as shown below. The selection mode will automatically exit after a few seconds.

Mode 1 [●○○○]: Granular Processor
Mode 2 [○●○○]: Pitch Shifter / Time Stretcher
Mode 3 [○○●○]: Looping Delay
Mode 4 [○○○●]: Spectral Processor
Mode 5 [○●●●]: Spatial Reverb
Mode 6 [●○●●]: Resonator
Mode 7 [●●○●]: Beat Repeat / Loop Slicer
Mode 8 [●●●○]: Spectral Clouds

You can find additional details at 1979.

"Main Titles [From Blade Runner]" - Vangelis (Eurorack Modular, Deckard's Voice, Juno, Sub37 & more

video upload by Piotr Garbaczonek

"Thanks for watching!

RIP Vangelis

One of my biggest inspirations in music has died recently, and after rewatching the movie Blade Runner from 1982, I decided to make this little tribute to him. I am covering the 'Main Titles' track by him.

I don't own a Yamaha CS-80, because it costs a fortune and a half :), but I have the Black Corporation's Deckard's Voice module, which is kind of like a full voice of the Yamaha's CS-80. On top of that, all of the typing and machinery and percussion elements were MIDI'd in my DAW, and then through Intellijel's uMIDI module, I sent all that data to Mutable Instruments Elements. All of the noise and resonant filter spikes were made using the ARP Odyssey, all the bass and bass textures were made on the Moog Subsequent 37CV, and all the chords are created on the Roland Juno 60's Patch number 17.

Some extra elements were also created on various other interactions on the eurorack modules, especially the granular engine of Mutable Instruments Clouds and the mix output on the Deckard's Voice. Most effects were done in post, which included various instances of Valhalla Shimmer, and Valhalla Supermassive for Delay. The only element that I kept from the original recording was the voice at the beginning, and I was able to achieve it by isolating it from the rest of the original track, using the iZotope RX8.

Resonator I [ EURORACK ] Mutable Instruments RINGS + BEADS + SHADES

video upload by R. P. Gould

"I don't think anybody has ever tried going from Rings into Beads or Clouds before ;)
Was just missing a succulent plant and I think this video would be the most groundbreaking synthesizer vid ever. Shockingly, Rings and Beads make a good pair.
Also shockingly I had never been interested too much in Rings, although Elements was almost my first module purchase ever in this module synthesizer journey through the land of eurorack.
Cheekiness aside, I am happy with the results, and it is a bit bitersweet knowing that we will probably not have any new Mutable Instruments modules due to Émilie Gillet retiring.

So patch notes:

I build on a simple loop, find a sweet spot in the granular landscapes of Beads, run it all through Strymon Magneto. Go from Rings internal synthesis to running a nice square wave oscillator through it, good times.

Percusions via Basimilus Iteritas Alter and Intellijel Plonk."
