DSI Prophet 08 | The other side of dreams | An ambient soundscape

video upload by MIDERA

"I think I'm convinced that the Prophet 08 is the best DSI synth. I didn't really care for the OB6 myself and haven't played the P6 or Trigon 6, so I can't say anything about them. The P12 just is very tame, while the Poly Evolver, as interesting as is it, just doesn't have something the P08 has, besides missing 4 voices. The PE is very hard to use because each oscillator is spread to L/R channels and when you mix them to center, the special stereo sound goes away. Since the sequencer only works as steps, not in a range of values, it ends up not being that great IMO.

The Prophet 5/10, is a much better synth though, so don't take this to think I like the P08 more, but I think it's equally special and sounds phenomenal. I gotta say though, I think the P08 is just fantastic and goes into really crazy territory very easily.

So the question I will be asking myself is... do I need the P12 and PE? Surely people would say to keep them, and the Polaris... but I have so many synths. These seem like they were supposed to do what I love about the P08, but don't.

Strymon Volante used for delay and Eventide Blackhole used for reverb."

Moog Matriarch | Why He Got One

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Moog Matriarch. A semi-modular analog synth that is the perfect source (pun intended) for sampling. I'm working on a epic sample bank for the Prophet X and the Matriarch sounds incredibly good and it has a very wide sweet spot. Almost everything sounds good coming out of it.
Many of the monophonic and unison sounds works very well when you play them polyphonically in the Prophet X afterwards too.

Sequential Prophet 5 rev4 - Factory Presets Demo (Sounds Only)

video upload by wolfgang S vukan

"So... this is THE LEGEND - new version (rev4) of the first polyphonic synth with preset memories - The PROPHET-5!

What to say... so many old and new records were recorded with this synth, it's created by synth pioneer Dave Smith (who created MIDI too) and it sounds spectacular. I just try to imagine how people reacted to this synth back in 1977.! It's amazing.

I was so interested in how VINTAGE knob react when you change Prophet-5's revision modes (from rev1 to rev4) - it's really interesting and sounds different. In rev1 mode P5 sounds more archaic with, fex., slightly different decay on keys - this remind me that my Jupiter 4 (1978) reacted at the same way.

All sounds are recorded directly from Prophet-5 to Tascam DR-05x recorder in 24bit/96kHz resolution, without any FX processing.

Thanx to Marko Milosavljević and Audio Pro Artist (Beograd, Srbija), official Sequential importer for Serbia and for this synth presentation."

Moog One, Prophet 5, Kronos, Space Echoes and a Fostex R8

video upload by Guido Scognamiglio

"I call this song 'Project #7', inspired by some Sci-fi shows that I like.
Instruments used:
- Korg Kronos: drum and bass on tracks 1 & 2
- Moog One: the pad sound on track 3
- Prophet 5: all other sounds on tracks 4, 5, 6 and 7
Only tracks 1 & 2 processed by a Drawmer DL-241, all other tracks have no compressor and no EQ.
Effects are only the Roland Space Echo RE-201 and the Chorus Echo RE-501 for all tracks except 1 & 2.
Track 8 is the SMPTE signal but is unused.

The Fostex R8 is a lovely tape machine..."

Sequential Introduces New Trigon-6 Desktop Module

Following Sequential's desktop adaptations of their classic keyboard line-up, the Trigon-6 is now available in desktop form.

Press release follows:

Introducing the New Trigon-6 Desktop Module

Ultimate Polyphonic Power
San Francisco, CA — Today, Sequential announced the desktop module of the powerhouse Trigon-6 polyphonic synthesizer, their modern take on a true-classic analog design. The desktop version is a compact and portable instrument that still packs in all the sound generation capabilities of its formidable keyboard sibling. It features three oscillators per voice and a ladder filter that has been updated with a dedicated drive and feedback control, making it easy to go from silky and smooth to bold and crunchy with the twist of a knob. This versatility makes Trigon-6 the perfect companion for your studio or live performance.

The desktop module is more than just a smaller version of the keyboard Trigon-6. It’s an expressive and potent instrument that delivers warm, organic, analog sound in its own right. “Desktop module designs continue to be a popular choice with our players,” said CEO David Gibbons. “We spent a little extra time on MIDI polyphonic expression capabilities as we finalized this one, in anticipation of people pairing it up with some of the awesome MPE-capable controllers on the market. We’re looking forward to hearing what people will do with it!”

Three is a Magic Number
The Trigon-6 desktop module offers a classic three-oscillator synth architecture with an enhanced ladder filter, inspired by some of the most iconic analog synths of all time. The three oscillators provide a rich and flexible sound source, with familiar waveforms from triangle to more complex saws, and variable-width pulse. You can mix and match the oscillators to create intricate harmonics, detune them for thick chorusing effects, or sync oscillator 2 for hard-edged growls.
Meanwhile, the ladder filter completes the heart and soul of the Trigon-6, providing a smooth and musical response that can shape your sound from creamy and mellow to mangled and aggressive. The filter has a 2/4-pole switchable slope and adjustable resonance that can add a distinctive peak or even self-oscillate for screaming leads and sci-fi effects. And with Drive and Feedback engaged, get ready to melt some faces!

Greater Expression Through MPE
Now Trigon-6 lets you shape every note with MPE. MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) is an extension of MIDI that allows compatible devices to control multiple parameters of individual notes within MPE-enabled synths. This provides for more expressive instrumental performances, as each note can have its own pitch bend, filter cutoff, amplitude, and other modulations. You will be able to bend, slide, vibrato, swell and morph your sounds with unprecedented feeling and subtlety. Experience the classic 3-oscillator, ladder filter sound like never before with Trigon-6, the groundbreaking polyphonic analog synth that lets you truly perform every nuance of your music with MPE.
The Trigon-6 synthesizer is a testament to Dave Smith’s legacy and innovation. It has all the best qualities of Sequential’s acclaimed Prophet-6 and OB-6 synths — 6-voice polyphony, unrivaled playability, and easy programmability. It
also features a global LFO, a polyphonic step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and a dual effect processor with chorus, ring modulation, flanger, phaser, delay, and reverb effects. Don’t miss this opportunity to get your hands on the Trigon-6 desktop module, the polyphonic power-synth that fits your studio, your music, and your life.

Specifications
Trigon-6 desktop module weighs approximately 10.9 lbs. (4.95 kg) and measures 22.00” L x 8.45” W x 4.54” H (55.88 cm x 21.46 cm x 11.53 cm).

Trigon-6 desktop module is available for pre-order now, with a US MAP price of $2,499. Shipping worldwide in August. For more information about the Trigon-6 desktop module, visit us at: https://www.sequential.com/product/trigon-6-desktop-module/

Replacing the Main Board in a Sequential Prophet 5/10

video upload by Retrothusiast

"I had to replace the main board in my Sequential Prophet 10 because when the Rev 1/2 filters were selected, some of the notes would drop out. This is, however, after I had already replaced this keyboard because my first keyboard would not stay in tune. I'll be posting another video touching on this in the near future.

Sequential sent me new boards and I recorded a quick, down and dirty video documenting the procedure for anyone else who might have to replace their boards and wanted to see what's involved.

I followed these instructions provided by Sequential Support:

Hats off to Sequential Support. This company really is top-notch and despite the issues I had with the hardware, I can tell the Sequential team really cares and is extremely helpful and supportive! Thank you, Sequential!"

Behringer Introduces The Smallest Full Featured Synth in History? JT-4000 Micro

video upload by Behringer

"Introducing the Behringer JT-4000 Micro a Portable 4-Voice Hybrid Synthesizer with 2 Analog Modelling Oscillators Per Voice, Analog Filter and Arpeggiator."

New Behringer Micro Line. The JT-4000 is based on the JP-8000. Only 4 voice polyphony vs. 8 though. I still don't understand the 4 voice poly thing, especially when it comes to digital synths. What's interesting is the JP-8000 is a digital software based synth. Aside from the Prophet-VS, Behringer has been mainly focused on cloning discrete analog designs. Discrete analog is typically easier to clone as the components are usually visible and traceable. Not so much with software synths based on code alone. Curious if the "Analog Filter" is analog or digital like the JP-8000.

Prophet 600 twins: Prophet 1200

video upload by Valmont

"I've been wondering about that one, I thought this would make a P10-esque stack, but happens that not really! The problem I had capturing this video is that P600s are phasing out, non stop. It drifts so much that it is impossible to merge them in a coherent mono signal! (Yo, 24 unstable analog VCOs at the same time??) So it's nice on headphones, sweet on largespeakers, but hell on mono devices. Also having twice the same instrument that has this very strong signature makes it not really simple to stack. It is more meaningful to have 2 different ones, like I did here: [previously posted here]

Anyway, it had to be done, and I'm happy to know I don't need a second Prophet 600 x))

Oh and about the question, 'Do two Prophet 600 sound different?', the answer is a bit yes! To my ears, one was brighter and thinner. The other one's VCOs were harder to tune, and it was darker in the way that it didn't bring as much overdrive as the other P600. The thing is that you can't trim the VCA load, so no way to adjust this. Also I have the voicepanning board installed, that I bypassed for this video (All trims to left side), but it may change the sound. I guess all of this is mostly due to different aging of CEMs? Like my friend's one slept for years, and mine is being daily used and taken on stage idk but I prefer mine x) Funny thing tho, they didn't have the same build quality, pots were feeling a slight bit different, and inside there was differences for capacitors used (none had ever been recapped tho), for connectors and power supply too. Early models look less reliable, late ones are safer.

KIWI by Siel: 15 sounds (Ex Opera 6/DK-600)

video upload by Valmont

"I made one demo here but I could just go on more, it sounds too great!
The KIWI, more often branded Opera 6, or DK-600, is a super rare super great italian synth.
Sometimes reminds me of the Jupiter 8 and the Oberheim OB-8, if we put appart the abscence of crossmod. The EG are hella tight, the DCOs are damn bright and full, the filter so mellow...... The epitome of the analog polysynth, far away from the cliché of italian synths.
Also an expensive instrument in the 80's as it cost 50% more than a Korg Poly 61, a Juno 60, a SX-210 or Yamaha DX9... Nowadays it would be about 4.400€ if we adjust the inflation, so definitely not an amateur synth! It was just about the level of a Prophet 600, which funny thing is that they are absolutely opposite in sound characters (and in components, 100% CEM for P600, 100% SSM for KIWI), but they go so well together! They are probably my 2 fav synths in my room :)

Thinking about installing the voicepanning on this one too tho :D

1984 Akai AX-80: 17 more great sounds

video upload by Valmont

"I played for hours straight so I had to change my camera's battery 4 times and my SD card, then assembling and sorting all the cuts I realized it moved a bit, sorry for that!
One of the great thing with the AX80 is the stability: it doesn't move of a single cent, which is fundamentally important for live performances! (Also there are 64 presets it's nice). More than being stable, it's also really in tune thanks DCOs drivers. (too much in tune..?)
It's nice to know this synth has a double-mode crossmod section, an ADSR to DCO routing and an additional sub waveform. On 8 voices so it goes big! I especially like the crossmod. It's not as versatile as a Prophet 600, but it does have a sonic difference. The filters are a question of taste, I'm into the 2044 reference and those CEMs don't sound quite the same, they have a more aggressive resonance... They're just different (in a CEM way by definition :p)
And well that look, with astonishing neon LEDs behind opaque plexiglass, and this fantastic keyboard feel! Oyy we don't speak enough about it, but it's amazing, it's perfectly balanced and nice to play with.

As usual with mono sources, I preamped the AX-80 thru a Golden Age Premier PREQ-73, and since the Akai output level is super high it easily went on overdrive. The Akai doesn't drive by itself, it's on the contrary really clean!

The Synthesis Technology E340 is a super-saw/sine oscillator capable of generating up to 8 waveforms per output. If you want massive bass and lead voices like the JP-8000 supersaw, or thick ambient drones as if played from a slow rotary speaker, the E340 is the perfect audio source for your synth patches.

Detune the swarm of oscillators using SPREAD or with randomly filtered noise using CHAOS and CHAOS BW (bandwidth). Reset the phase of all waveforms using the SYNC trigger input, which can use another oscillator to produce a sync-lead sound.

This module supports VCV Rack’s polyphonic cables, so with 16 voices, you can generate a total of 128 waveforms per output.

This VCV Rack software module uses the original firmware from the hardware Synthesis Technology E340 module.
