The Roland DriftBox-R Limited is an updated version of the original Reon DriftBox in AIRA green livery. Originally commissioned by Roland to demonstrate the the SBX-1 Sync Box, the DriftBox-R Limited is a cool analog synth module in its own right. You get two oscillators, a great-sounding filter, and an envelope generator, as well as CV/gate I/O that turns this little tabletop unit semi-modular. You can use it by itself and trigger its envelope with the onboard momentary button - or combine it with other hardware and the possibilities are endless. Paired with a CV-equipped keyboard or sequencer, it's a great source for soaring leads and massive bass lines.

"We saw the Reon Driftboxes at last years Korg stand at Synthfest. Korg were seeing what the interest was before looking at distributing them in the UK.

This year, we have prices and limited availability. Because of the small numbers that are manufactured, its tough one to bring in in large numbers. So grab em while you can - Korg are the place to start in the UK."

"Is the First VCA-CV controller + sequencer in the series, assuming a combination of a driftbox S / R synthesizer and an external device such as a sequencer. Two large joysticks control the CV output on the X axis with VCA on the Y axis. Although oscillator is not installed in driftbox J itself, by inputting audio and CV / GATE / MIDI signal from the outside, it is possible to change the level and pan without changing the audio signal groove, output the processed CV It is possible to manipulate parameters of other synthesizers.
It corresponds to synchronization by CV or MIDI as master / slave, and in manual / loop mode it can record movement of two joysticks in real time with built-in 16 step sequencer. You can also use the step mode to input stick motion for each step.

Also, real-time operation with programmed VCA and joystick can be output at the same time. AVP MAD-5 drum synth jam

"Jam session demoing the AVP MAD-5 analog drum synthesizer. The MAD-5 is going straight to my mixer with no effects applied. The synth has 5 drums: kick, snare, open hi-hat, closed hi-hat and clap. It rocks.

The bass is from a Pittsburgh SV-1 Blackbox with a small amount of Reon Driftbox in there too.

Recorded on my Nexus 5.

KORG USA to Exclusively Distribute Waldorf Gear in the US

Thought this was interesting. If you are caught up with this morning's posts you might recall KORG is distributing Reon products in the UK. It appears they are also going to be the exclusive distributor for Waldorf in the US.

This one is in via Soviet Space Child, who spotted it on Music & Sound Retailer.

Note the video above is from March in 2016, so these are not technically new. Reon gear tends to be promoted via Japanese channels. As you can see their website is primarily in Japanese only.  They also do a bit of one off and customized gear. Check out the pink one!

Previously featured Reon driftboxes included the driftbox S, S ver II, R, Q, V, E, C, T, and G announced here, back in 2013. There were also modular versions and a Roland branded DriftBox R model announced in 2015. You can find demos and pics via the Reon label here.

BTW, the different spellings and capitalizations I'm using for Driftbox is on purpose. Roland branded it DriftBox with a capital D and B, and Reon interchanges between driftbox, all lowercase, and Driftbox with the capital D. I have also seen it as Drift Box.

That said, not featured here on MATRIXSYNTH before now, are the driftbox SE, J, and W. The following are some details Google translated from Reon.

REON "System 55" Modular Spotted

You might remember back in July 2015 REON unveiled their M-System C1 modular synthesizer in Moog/dotcom format which consisted of 3 VCOs, 3 VCFs, 2 VCAs, 2 ENVs, 1 LFO and 2 Mixers.

Take a look at the image to the left from Japan's Musical Instruments Fair. Click on it and zoom in. BOTH systems are REON. At first I thought the top was the M-System C1 (with an added step sequencer on the top left) sitting on top of a Moog System 55. It turns out the bottom is made from REON modules as well.

Manufacturer Description:
VCO 1 has controls for frequency, level and modulation depth. HIGH/LOW switches between octaves. Frequency range: 0.2Hz-10kHz
The WAVE switch selects in a rotating fashion one of the wave forms: sawtooth -> triangle -> 50% pulse -> 75% pulse -> 25% pulse -> white noise -> pink noise
EG/FM selects either the envleope generator or the second VCO as modulation source.

VCO 2 is pretty much the same as VCO1 but has only two selectable waveforms (sawtooth and 50% square) and different modulation options (sync or FM by VCO1). The CV LINK switch routes the external CV for VCO1 to input of VCO2 as well.

The filter is a resonant, 24db/octave steep low pass filter. The resonance goes into oscillation. The modulation source for the cutoff can be either the envelope or an external CV; the modulation intensity is adjustable. Two more switches determine if and which VCO is used for filter cutoff modulation.

The envelope is working either as an AD or an ASR, the middle control D/S determines either the decay time or the sustain level. When envelopes overlap, an interesting percussion effect occurs which prevails in the mix.
The INV/NOR switch can invert the envelope. The modulation depth to the VCA is set with the "EG depth" potentiometer.

HOLD opens the VCA and the VOL control sets the output level. The output switch is used for muting the synth.
The white button allows you to fire the envelope manually and it generates a gate signal at the gate output socket."

"This is a little demonstration of what this little synth can do.

Reon Drift Box R is a limited model (only few hundred made) semi-modular analog synthesizer capable of making a huge variety of different sounds and bleebs. Although it hasn't got MIDI, you can use it via CV inputs. In this video Arturia Beatstep is used as a sequencer. There's a hint of reverb coming from a Yamaha mixer."
