Modular Jam 48

Published on Mar 3, 2016 ngarjuna

"Patch Notes:

Guitar Loops
Guitars performed and recorded by the fabulous Rich Prewett before being chopped and mangled

Lead Voice
The Rene pattern starts to feedback (via Woggle CV from the Wogglebug being fed Rene's pitch output and clock) at around 4:30 or so. From there the pattern continues to bend and wind as the attenuator gets wiggled until it gets snapped back to the familiar refrain

The patch itself consists of Rene driving the STO and Rubicon which are cross modulating:
Rubicon's sine is going through the uVCA (enveloped by Intellijel ADSR) into the STO linear FM
STO's sine goes through Optomix ch 1 enveloped by Maths into the TZFM input on Rubicon (full CW so not through zero)
The cross modulated output of the STO is additionally shape modulated by SUM out from Maths (which includes some offset and some PEG) and piped into the Optomix ch 2 enveloped by other Maths with Sequencer 1's LFO providing Damping modulation

Unlike most of my patches this one has not been subjected to any post processing: no reverbs, no delays or phasers; processing only seemed to obscure the nicer details of this particular patch.

West Coast Bass Patch
STO vari out to Optomix 2 enveloped and struck by Maths. STO sine out to Timbre input. Dynamic (uVCA opened by Woggle stepped out) FM from Sputnik 2
Timbre modulated by Maths
Optomix 1 opened by Intellijel ADSR and Damp modulated by Sequencer 1
Sequencer 1 LFO modulating Maths fall (Optomix ch 2)

East Coast Bass Patch
Rubicon square out and some noise from the Quantum Rainbow put through the Post Lawsuit Filter into the AJH Minimod VCA enveloped by Minimod EG and Intellijel ADSRs with some gentle PEG'ing and Pittsburgh Oscillator LFO'ing

Robot Humming Patch
In Kaivo I ran modulating Compressor Hiss through the metal string and one of the chambers
Then that rich timbre dancing mess got put through Array where the spectral filtering was sequenced

Pluck Patches
Fairly straightforward Ngarjuna Make Noise plucks: STO FM'd by Rubicon into Optomix, add Maths and PEG
The alternating line with the more common 3 note pluck is a variation using the two Sputniks cross modulating through the Timbre and into the other Optomix channel. Quantum Rainbow provided some additional modulation

Acid cooked in Klanghelm SDRR
Drums in Spark (electronic) and Jamstix (shakers and hand percussion)

and of course my trusty Tektronix 422 scope providing the trippy light show."

Spinatus Tor

Published on Nov 2, 2015 voltlife

"An attempt at making vaguely Raster Noton-style clicky glitch with purely analogue modules and effects that somehow turned into something more like dark industrial.

The clicks are just a sine wave through a VCA with a very quick Maths envelope into a resonant Pittsburgh Filter in HPF mode. The filter's cutoff is modulated by a S&H, while the Maths envelope is triggered by the square sum out of a self-patched A134-4, which also acts as the master clock.

The kick drum is another Maths envelope driving a self-oscillating uVCF, the output of which is also multed into a Synthrotek Dirt filter and A124 Wasp filter to create nasty buzzy swells. Other nasty rhythmic buzzes area created by a couple of Pittsburgh Generator/GenXpander outputs into a R52 valve filter (heavily modulated by a Dreamboat) and a Sea Devils Filter, gated by Optomix or switched abruptly on and off by an A152, which is also triggering various rhythmic elements. The rest of the rhythmic patterns are created by a combination of A160/161/166.

There's also a simple pluck-ish sequence, which is a Rubicon and Mannequins Mangrove through an A108 (I think I used up all of my filters!). The sequence is created by a manually-tuned Pressure Points driven by Brains (which I think was the closest thing to a digital module I used in this patch).

Most elements then went through my spring reverb, which is a Danelectro Spring King pedal that I've hacked up to mount the springs externally. My arbitrary decision to use all analogue modules (I felt I've been relying too heavily on digital modules such as Tyme Sefari II and Erbe Verb for glitchy effects) left me with just the spring reverb for effects, so the overall mix is probably a bit too dry. Time for me to get a BBD delay, I think!"

Sputnik Oscillator Pair Day One

Published on Oct 19, 2015 ngarjuna

"A Tale of Two Oscillators:
A really rough and dirty (sorry about the video) exploration of a pair of Sputnik Oscillators.

Simple patch:
SHAPE out from each VCO to a channel of low pass gate (Optomix)
Sputnik 1 FM'ing Sputnik 2
channel 1 opened by Maths 1 triggered by the clock (Silent Way)
channel 2 opened by Maths 4 triggered by Rene (providing the pitch sequence as well)
LFO (Rubicon) giving waveshape modulation and later into CV in
Looping envelope (PEG) into Sputnik 2's CV in
Audio line in, no effects.

So a bad video (again, sorry!) but some delicious sounds. And the wavefolder hasn't even showed up yet..."

Circadian Rhythms

Circadian Rhythms from Joseph Fraioli on Vimeo.

"a patch focused around the tiptop audio circadian rhythms (CR) as the heart of the system that provides the main clock source and triggers for events.

the programming was done on all 8 channels of the CR in 2x32 mode. fills are set to 16th note. mutes, fills and additional programming are performed on the fly.

patch basics:

CR ch 1: main kick
sound source is the blue lantern BDv4 going through the modcan frequency shifter.

CR ch 2: snare
sound source is the make noise mysteryon who’s pitch is being modulated by the mod can quad lfo who’s synced to the CR main clock output. the output was split into a separate VCA who’s being opened by the sound machines light plane and sent to the mungo d0 with macro machines storage strip. the storage strip is being sequenced by the CR main clock output.

CR ch 3: closed hat
sound source here is the SSF quantum rainbow blue noise.

CR ch 4: open hat
sound source is the SSF quantum rainbow white noise though the intellijel µfold and then a bit of delay from the synth tech e580.

CR ch 5: glass percussion as well as delayed bass and end melodic thing
glass percussion sound source is the noise engineering BI. pitch modulation from the tiptop z8000. delayed bass is an intellijel dixie square run through the cwejman res-4 and.end melodic thing is the harvestman piston honda MKII.

CR ch 6: chord bursts
this is the intellijel/cylonix shapeshifter in sequence mode then run thorough the qu-bit electronic RT60 reverb.

CR ch 7: tonal accents
sound source is braids in meta mode. also being sequenced by the CR and pith modulated by the tiptop z8000.

CR ch 8: sub kick
sound source is the tiptop audio BD808.

acidy bass: trigger source for the acidy bass is the intellijel metropolis that is synced to the CR via the clock output. sound source is the intellijel rubicon thats being FMed by a DIXIE sine, then put through the cwejman MMF1 in low pass.

tonal drones: trigger source here is the divided output of the intellijel metropolis into two make noise pressure points that have been micro tonally tuned. the sound sources here are synth tech e350 and make noise DPO that share a common mutable instruments peaks ADSR. the sounds are then processed through the serge resonant equalizer and tiptop audio zdsp with halls of valhalla reverb card.

hi plucked melody in mid section: this is the qu bit nebulae playing back a sample of mutable instruments braids in PLUK mode playing a melody sequenced on metropolis then fed to the mungo d0. the nebulae is then processed through flame FX6 reverb.

no computers or external hardware were used in this performance :)"

Aion, Macbeth, Synthesis Technology LPF comparison

Published on Jun 4, 2014 jakobsweb·15 videos

"As some have requested, here is a little sound comparision between 3 awesome Eurorack lowpass filters. The very new Aion 904A, Synthesis Technology E440 (MOTM) and the Macbeth Dual SV filter. Aion and SynTech have a 24db slope, the Macbeth has 12db and is a dual multimode filter. All 3 of them boast an enormous powerful very classic synthesizer sound - the kind that makes you go OMG :-)

The sound source is the Intellijel Rubicon VCO with 3 of its outputs (saw, pulse w/mod, sub) feeding the filters with a healthy dose of beafiness. Considering its price, the Aion filter is doing a tremendous job here, compared with the Macbeth which costs about three times as much, the E440 in the mid range. Given its dual outputs the Macbeth filter is the most versatile of them, esp with invertable modulation and jumper settings for resonance intensity. The E440 is a phantastic allround, always sound great filter, a touch cleaner I think than the other 2. The Aion is a downright vintage sounding filter. Outputwise it is a little weak - but add some amp and it will blow you away. The Aion has that wonderful vintage creamy coarsness (can't describe it any else)."
