Musikmesse: New from Akai

"AKAI PROFESSIONAL ANNOUNCES MINIAK SYNTHESIZER

Virtual-Analog Synthesizer with Vocoder Developed in Partnership with Alesis

Cumberland, R.I. (April 1, 2009) – Akai Professional, the name synonymous with music production, announces the MINIAK, the synthesizer specifically designed for today’s music production and performance styles. The MINIAK will make its debut in Akai Professional's stand, B 21 in Hall 5.0 at Musikmesse, April 1 - 4, 2009. Held in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Musikmesse is the world's largest fair for musical instruments, live music and the music business.

The MINIAK is the first synthesizer from Akai Professional developed in partnership with the world-renowned Alesis synthesis team. The MINIAK brings together Akai Professional’s excellent control feel with powerful DSP sound-generation technology. The MINIAK is a perfect synthesizer for producers in the studio and live performers on stage because, while it is extremely compact and portable, it is also a powerful instrument for creating sounds for performance and production.

The MINIAK enables users to create programs with up to eight multi-timbral voices, each with three oscillators. The user can create interesting and unique sounds and take advantage of the synthesizer’s more-than-600 preset sounds. Users can create complex and refined sounds using the MINIAK’s two multimode filters, three envelope generators, two LFOs, stereo effects and 40-band vocoder with gooseneck microphone. The MINIAK also has a comprehensive sequencer with step and dynamic real time phrase sequencing, a drum machine/rhythm sequencer and an arpeggiator.

Users will appreciate the MINIAK’s high-resolution, 24-bit balanced quarter-inch inputs and outputs for excellent sound quality. The MINIAK has a 37-key semi-weighted keyboard with velocity sensitivity for all-in-one performance. It can also be used as a sound source for MPCs, computer software and keyboards via MIDI.

“We have been watching a trend in music production towards using more synth sounds alongside samples,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Akai Professional. “The MINIAK is the perfect way for anyone to get into synthesis, yet it is powerful enough for any professional to create the precise sonority they are after.”

The MINIAK will be available from musical instrument and professional audio retailers Q3, 2009."
"AKAI PRO FURTHER EXPANDS MPK LINE WITH 88-KEY MODEL

MPK88 Performance Controller Features Exclusive MPC Technologies

Cumberland, R.I. (April 1, 2009) – Akai Professional, the name synonymous with music production, announces the MPK88, a new addition to its popular MPK series of keyboard controllers with MPC pads and technology. The MPK88 will make its debut in Akai Professional’s stand, B 21 in Hall 5.0 at Musikmesse, April 1 - 4, 2009. Held in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Musikmesse is the world's largest fair for musical instruments, live music and the music business.

The new MPK88 draws on the design of its siblings in the MPK series. The MPK49 and MPK25 each combine a MIDI-over-USB keyboard controller with genuine MPC pads and a sampling of the technologies that have made Akai Professional’s MPC series such an iconic music-production tool. The MPK88 brings the utility and creative control of its siblings to more dedicated piano and keyboard players, thanks to its fully-weighted, hammer-action keyboard with assignable keyboard split and aftertouch. Akai Professional designed this performance keyboard controller to specifically deliver the feel that serious keyboardists demand in a high-quality instrument.

In addition to the premium keybed, the MPK88 gives the player 16 MPC pads that are velocity and pressure sensitive and can access four banks of sounds each, for access to 64 sounds at any time. The MPC pads are the most recognizable feature of the MPC series, which has been among the most influential devices in the creation and production of music for the last two decades. The MPK88 also puts the player in command of their software with assignable Q-Link faders, knobs and buttons. The user can assign any Q-Link to control nearly any parameter in their software for hands-on, mouse-free performance. The MPK88 also has two assignable footswitch inputs and an expression pedal input.

Two technologies pioneered in the MPC series and built into the MPK88 are MPC Note Repeat and MPC Swing. These note-modifying features can be heard in many of the most popular tracks over the last two decades. MPC Note Repeat is a capability that enables the MPK to automatically play a rhythm pattern, such as 16th notes on a hi-hat, for accuracy and speed of entry. MPC Swing is sometimes referred to as "the heart and soul of hip hop," because it turns perfectly aligned sequences into human feeling time alignments. Users can specify exactly the degree and timing of swing they want to apply for the perfect feel. The MPK88 also has an arpeggiator, which enables performers to build creative riffs instantly.

The MPK88 sends MIDI values over USB and a traditional MIDI jack. The controller works with most MIDI recording, sequencing and performance software as well as sound modules, synthesizers and other MIDI-compliant hardware, for musical performers from keyboard players to producers to DJs and VJs.

The MPK25 and MPK88 come with Ableton Live Lite Akai Edition software, one of the most popular and powerful performance and production programs in the world. Ableton Live Lite enables musicians to spontaneously compose, record, remix, improvise and edit musical ideas in a seamless audio/MIDI environment.

“Professional keyboard performers now have the control they need on stage and in the studio,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Akai Professional. “The MPK88 has weighted keyboard action plus the performance flexibility and control of the MPC pads and technology.”

The MPK88 joins the semi-weighted MPK49 and MPK25 controllers, which have 49 and 25 keys, respectively.

The MPK88 will be available from pro audio and musical instrument retailers in Q3, 2009."

"AKAI PRO MPD18 BRINGS MPC PAD CONTROL TO ANY SETUP

MIDI-Over-USB Pad Controller is Small and Portable for Versatility

Cumberland, R.I. (April 1, 2009) – Akai Professional, the name synonymous with music production, announces the MPD18 portable pad controller. The MPD18 will make its debut in Akai Professional's stand, B 21 in Hall 5.0 at Musikmesse, April 1 - 4, 2009. Held in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Musikmesse is the world's largest fair for musical instruments, live music and the music business.

The MPD18 is the smallest-sized model in Akai Professional’s line of MPD pad controllers. DJs, programmers, producers and other musicians will find this MIDI-over-USB controller to be perfect for triggering samples, controlling software, and a variety of other applications. Its small footprint makes the MPD18 easy to integrate into any setup for stage performance, studio production or musical creation on the go.

The heart of the MPD18 is its bank of 16 velocity and pressure-sensitive genuine MPC pads, an Akai Professional exclusive. Users can access three different banks of sounds from the pads for a total of 48 sounds at once. The MPD18 also borrows the MPC series' assignable Q-Link controllers, enabling users to control nearly any parameters in their software in real time on an assignable Q-Link fader and an assignable Q-Link button.

Users will find the MPD18 to be convenient, sending MIDI information over its plug-and-play USB interface for use with Mac or PC without installing any drivers. The USB connection also powers the MPD18 so musicians can use the controller with no power supply. The MPD18 can control nearly any MIDI software, as well as MIDI hardware, such as synths, sound modules, samplers, sequencers, drum machines and more.

“The MPD18 gives you the iconic control feel of the MPC in a compact footprint that's easy to fit in any setup,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Akai Professional.

The MPD18 will be available from musical instrument and professional audio retailers Q3, 2009."

George Duke has also worked as musical director at numerous large-scale musical events, including the Nelson Mandela tribute concert at Wembley Stadium in London in 1988. In 1989, he was the interim musical director of NBC's late-night music performance program Sunday Night.

THE EXHIBIT
Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog focuses on Bob's Moog's work and the impact that he had on the world of music. It features rare vintage synthesizers and other related Moog instruments and memorabilia from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives and from various private collections. The exhibit explores the numerous musicians, engineers and colleagues who played a vital role in the evolution of the Moog sound and the relationship between and the inventor/toolmaker and the musician, as well as the genesis of a variety of musical interfaces.

Bob Moog (1934-2005) was a pioneer in the field of electronic music, inventing the Moog synthesizer in 1964. His invention made synthesis accessible to musicians for the first time and in doing so provided them with new realms of sonic expression. The instrument revolutionized the face of music and was used by such early synthesists as Wendy Carlos, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Jan Hammer, and more.

“The Moog synthesizer defined the sounds of progressive rock and was regarded as the best sound in synthesizers. ” – Keith Emerson (Emerson, Lake and Palmer)

The Moog synthesizer is widely used today in almost every genre of music and continues to be coveted for its rich, warm analog sound and high level of expressiveness.

“Bob Moog was one of the great visionaries of our time. His ideas far transcend just music, and to this day continue to have impact on everything from rock to rap to quantum physics” – Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)

Moog's career spanned over 50 years and his work left an indelible impact on music, musicians and music-lovers alike. Bob Moog's unique legacy is one of expanding musical expression through innovation and inspiring musicians to explore the boundaries of sonic reality. Tens of thousands of musicians worldwide were, and continue to be, inspired by Moog's work, and the sonic palette it provides.

Bob Moog was awarded two GRAMMYs for his work: the NARAS Trustee's Award in 1970 and Award for Technical Achievement in 2002. He also won the Polar Music prize in 2001 from the King of Sweden and numerous other prizes that recognized his contributions.

Introducing The Mune Open Source Wireless MIDI Touch Controller Instrument

Published on Aug 22, 2015 Mune

A new wireless controller with included software featuring control apps and an FM synthesizer.  The video description and official press release follow below.  No word on whether this can be paired with an iOS or Android device or whether it supports OSC as well as MIDI.  I reached out to them and will post a follow-up if I hear back.

Update: I heard back.
1. Sysex support is being tested but may end up as a stretch goal in their kickstarter campaign along with OSC support.
2. The Mune will pair wirelessly with iOS and Android.
3. And... specs on the FM synth are forthcoming, however, regarding the drum synth: "the drum machine is a pairing of a 16 step sequencer plus a fairly straightforward sample-based playback system"
4.  This is a the evolution of the arc instruments controller posted earlier here.

Video description:
Demo videos coming shortly...
Music by Biathlon: https://wil-ru.bandcamp.com/album/bac...

The Mune is a new instrument that combines the power of digital with the soul of an acoustic instrument. It's wireless, incredibly expressive and flexible.

'Mune' comes from the word 'commune' - because a new instrument should live up to today's open and collaborative standards. If you're interested - please join us in designing and pushing this device out into the world!"

And the official press release:

"THE FLEXIBILTY OF A DIGITAL CONTROLLER + THE SOUL OF A TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENT

CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN LAUNCHING IN JULY 2016

The Mune story began four years ago when Scott Stevenson met Andrew Staniland, a Canadian composer and music professor. Andrew had been composing “electroacoustic” music, combining the instrumentation of classical music with digital sounds and effects. Andrew had found that performing using current digital interfaces left him and his audiences unsatisfied.

'I FOUND THAT I WAS AT A DISADVANTAGE MAKING MUSIC ELECTRONICALLY, BECAUSE WHILE I WAS DOING A LOT OF THINGS
ON STAGE LIKE THE OTHER MUSICIANS, THERE WAS NO VISIBLE CAUSE-AND-EFFECT BETWEEN MY ACTIONS AND THE SOUND' - ANDREW STANILAND

With that, Andrew began a research project with the objective of creating a more satisfying electronic music performance instrument. Andrew and Scott initially focused on the problem of creating an interface that could face towards the audience and make interactions fully visible - but along the way they learned that there were other core elements that desktop interfaces were lacking. Attempting to match the expressiveness and sensitivity of an acoustic instrument became an integral part of our mission while developing a solution.

The rst prototype of the Mune, (called the “Arc”) was so successful that it was decided to produce the instrument commercially. Four prototypes and many performances later, the Mune team is proud to emerge with a device which is truly a hybrid between a classical instrument and a digital controller.

WHAT IS THE MUNE?
The Mune is a new electronic music instrument. It combines the functionality of a MIDI controller (used by DJs and producers) with the expressiveness and simplicity of an acoustic instrument.

Unlike a traditional DJ controller, the Mune can be held by the performer to face the audience, allowing the audience to view the musician’s interactions with sound. The built-in wireless technology allows the musician to step far away from the glow of their laptop.

The Mune offers an expanding variety of “apps” that run on a laptop and connect to the Mune. The Mune also includes an expansion port to allow the connection of future onboard sound processing modules. Like any MIDI controller, it can be used to control virtually any audio software, like Ableton Live, Reason, Logic and Max.

BUILT FOR PERFORMANCE
Take your performance off the table and show the world that electronic musicians do more than 'push play'. The Mune makes your interactions with sound expressive and visible to your audience.

BEYOND MELODY AND RHYTHM
The Mune is designed to be equally proficient at traditional performance and digital production: play melodies, shape sound, program loops, control effects and mix tracks.

MUNE COMMUNE
The Mune instrument is just the beginning. Further development and design decisions of the Mune will be driven by our community, the Commune. The Commune will also offer a simple platform for software developers to share new apps they’ve created with Mune musicians.

Future: New Touch Panels
The Mune hardware is built to be as exible as its software. It’s hardware interface allows completely new control panels to be designed and connected.

TONTO Week: Malcolm Cecil, A Tribe Called Red, and The National Music Centre in Calgary

The Story of TONTO Published on Jan 22, 2014 National Music Centre

"The Original New Timbral Orchestra (TONTO), the world's largest analog synthesizer, has found a new home at the National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta. This is the story of how TONTO went from a dream to a reality, and then found a new life and home at NMC."

Note the above video is from January 22, 2014. You should all be familiar with TONTO.

Update: It has come to my attention that John Leimseider has passed away. He was scheduled to give a TONTO Demonstration with Malcom Cecil on Nov. 17 per below. The demonstration will remain scheduled with Malcom Cecil, however the Synthesis 101 course on Nov. 14 has been canceled.

Details on the event:

TONTO Week puts "holy grail of synthesizers" in the spotlight from November 14-18

Week of activities to feature TONTO co-creator Malcolm Cecil, A Tribe Called Red, Phantom of the Paradise screening, and more

(Calgary, AB — September 13, 2018) After years of careful restoration, the National Music Centre (NMC) will commission one of the crown jewels of its music and technology collection, The Original New Timbral Orchestra (aka TONTO), during TONTO Week from November 14-18.

To commemorate this milestone, NMC will host a week of music programming timed to coincide with Alberta Electronic Music Conference (AEMCON), running concurrently at Studio Bell during TONTO Week. NMC Members receive discounted or free admission to all TONTO Week events (not including AEMCON conference passes), so purchase your membership online today at studiobell.ca/members. Individual tickets are available at nmc.ca/whats-on. AEMCON conference passes are available at albertaelectronicmusic.com.

Members of A Tribe Called Red will be the first musicians to create new music with the legendary synthesizer, and they’ll demo TONTO during a public workshop and incorporate the instrument into an evening Studio Bell After Hours set. “After seeing TONTO for the first time back in 2014, I knew that I had unfinished business at the National Music Centre,” said 2oolman of A Tribe Called Red. “I have been waiting patiently ever since to get my hands on that instrument.”

Malcolm Cecil, one of the co-creators of TONTO, will be in attendance to deliver demonstrations and lectures on the history of the instrument. NMC will also host a screening of the cult classic film, Phantom of the Paradise, in which TONTO appeared, and other activities associated with the instrument.

TONTO is one of the world’s largest analog synthesizers. Created by Malcom Cecil and Robert Margouleff in 1968, its creation marked the first attempt at making a universal language for different synthesizers to communicate with each other, which was a revolutionary achievement. Under the band name Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, Cecil and Margouleff released the highly influential album Zero Time. The album demonstrated the rich, layered sounds of the massive synthesizer and attracted significant attention.

Used on multiple Stevie Wonder and The Isley Brothers albums in the 1970s, TONTO helped shape albums by a long list of notable artists such as Minnie Riperton, Joan Baez, the Doobie Brothers, Quincy Jones, Randy Newman, Bobby Womack and more, and was prominently featured in Phantom of the Paradise.

“I needed to find a home for TONTO that would survive me and where it could be used,” said Malcolm Cecil after NMC acquired the instrument in 2013.

“We made a promise to Malcom to ensure that TONTO would be used again in the creation of new music and that its legacy would live on,” said Adam Fox, NMC’s Director of Programs. “It took several years to properly restore the instrument, and now it’s finally ready to enter its next chapter. We couldn’t be more excited to hear where NMC’s Artists in Residence take TONTO next.”

March 21, 2017 - Moogfest will dedicate its main stage on opening night to exploring how creative technology tools and protest music can be used as instruments for change. This Protest stage will be led by local and international artists Talib Kweli, Omar Souleyman, Mykki Blanco, BEARCAT and Pie Face Girls, MIT Open Doc Lab, NEW INC, and app developers at Goldsmiths University. The diverse Protest stage program will include performances, talks, and participatory technology experiments. Moogfest invites all presenters and attendees to explore sonic resistance and emerging technology tools for counteraction while celebrating radical inclusivity and intersectionality. New technologies for educating, organizing, and art-making echo Moogfest’s rallying cry: Synthesize Love.

Protest comes in many forms, and no single genre can contain the musicians participating in Thursday’s program. Talib Kweli is a renowned recording artist, entrepreneur, and social activist who uses hip hop to educate, inspire and agitate. He is well known for his work combating racial stereotypes, the prison-industrial complex, and police brutality. Syrian artist-activist Omar Souleyman represents culturally diverse musical traditions that include Kurdish, Ashuris, Arabic, Turkish and Iraqi communities. Fearless noise rap poet and performance artist Mykki Blanco was raised in Raleigh, N.C., but has traveled the globe from art-world stomping grounds in New York to his current home in Los Angeles, spitting subversive rhymes on race and LGBT issues. British DJ/Producer BEARCAT makes politically-charged bass-heavy mixes and represents Discwoman, an esteemed collective showcasing cis women, trans women and genderqueer talent in electronic music. Raleigh-based band Pie Face Girls uses defiant punk music to promote a DIY ethos and attack issues like North Carolina’s HB2. Music is one of the oldest forms of protest, but each of these artists makes their causes urgent anew with the music and community they build.

Intermixed with the musical performances, technologists participating in the Moogfest Protest stage program will present recent and developing projects that empower and facilitate social action. Gan Golan and Ron Morrison of NEW INC present their countersurveillance armor for citizens, The Argus Project, a head-to-toe mobile suit embedded with cameras that allows the wearer and its audience of remote viewers to monitor and record environmental behaviour. Taeyoon Choi, also of NEW INC, presents a protest sign-making workshop, exploring signs as a poetic medium for social engagement in an inclusive space that promotes learning from people with differing views and priorities. Halsey Burgund of MIT Open Doc Lab and Joe Zobkiw present the Land Marking app, which captures the sounds of social movements around the world. During the festival, attendees are invited to contribute their voices or listen to the location-based mix of music and voices contributed by previous participants. Vivan Thi Tang, a postgraduate in the Graduate Entrepreneur program at Goldsmiths University in London, created a customized beta of her irlbb app for Moogfest 2017, that presents a unique opportunity for participants to connect with potential collaborators.

via Moog Music:

"Re-Introducing Werkstatt-01

Werkstatt-01 is a patchable and compact analog synthesizer. A gateway to the expansive world of analog synthesis, the instrument is a must-have for anyone interested in exploring classic Moog sound and circuitry through the unique, hands-on experience of a DIY synthesizer project. This affordable, easy-to-assemble kit requires no prior electronics experience and is a perfect afternoon (or Christmas morning) project.

The straightforward simplicity of Werkstatt-01’s design makes it an ideal jumping-off point to discover a limitless new world of analog sound design, and the included 3.5mm CV Expander makes it a no-brainer for everyone wishing to integrate the iconic Moog sound into their music. The 9" by 6" musical machine may be small, but the raw power and spectrum of the sound it produces is immense.

From Musical Exploration to Experimental Education

First introduced at Moogfest 2014 as part of the event’s Engineering Workshop, the Werkstatt-01 analog synthesizer has been admired as an essential introductory synth, a powerful standalone instrument, and an enhancement to any integrated electronic music ecosystem. Based on classic Moog circuitry, Werkstatt-01 was created to provide a hands-on understanding of how analog synthesizers work and encourage experimentation with sound through patching and interconnectivity.

The research and design that went into Werkstatt-01’s circuits, and the demand for more semi-modular exploratory analog instruments after its initial release, ultimately led to the development of some of today’s most expressive sound design machines: Mother-32, DFAM, Grandmother, Matriarch, and Subharmonicon.

More than a musical instrument, Werkstatt-01 has also served as an interactive educational tool in STEM curricula. The compact, versatile synthesizer has been the heart of the Georgia Tech Hackathon, a weekend-long competition that takes place each February at the Atlanta university’s Center for Music Technology, for six years and counting. The 2021 Georgia Tech Hackathon will be held virtually; see details here.

The easily mod-able analog synth kit has also proven to be a perfect learning ground for DIY modifications and the science of sound. This page of our website features a series of instructional videos to walk you through how to expand your instrument through breadboarding and arduino integration.

Classic Moog Sound & Circuitry

Werkstatt-01’s 100% analog circuits deliver the classic soul and futuristic sound Moog synthesizers are known for. Featuring a full-range analog oscillator with selectable waveforms for powerful sound and the legendary Moog Ladder Filter for precision harmonic sculpting, this instrument covers a vast expanse of sonic territory. Adding movement and modulation is as simple as engaging Werkstatt-01’s analog LFO circuit to simulate the motion of gently breathing waves, or crank up the LFO speed and summon cosmic laser beams. A two-stage analog envelope generator with sustain gives you control to shape dynamics, dialing in everything from lush electronic string swells to punchy basslines and organic percussion hits—and everything in between.

The included CV Expander allows you to enter the endless realms of modular synthesis, where new connections can be made and original sounds are unlocked. Patching inputs and outputs together from the 12 jacks of the 3.5mm patch bay will reconfigure Werkstatt-01’s circuits to create new signal paths and empower new sonic explorations. The included CV Expander also makes it easy to connect Werkstatt-01 to other Moog semi-modular synthesizers, Eurorack systems, or drum machines, enhancing any configuration with powerful analog sound."

Abbey Road Institute: The Moog session - The synth that shaped musical history

Streamed live on Dec 1, 2017 Abbey Road Institute

"On the 1st of December we are featuring another historic instrument that shaped musical history: The MiniMoog!

How did it become such an icon?
What makes it so special?
And why does it sound so massive?!

We got you covered. Tune in on the 1st of December.

Shaping musical history:
The Minimoog was designed in response to the use of synthesizers in rock/pop music.
Jazz composer Sun Ra was the first to use a prototype of the Minimoog in his music and Keith Emerson (musician and composer) was the first musician touring with a Minimoog, demonstrating some amazing pitch-bending techniques for the first time with many keyboard players following his example afterwards. Just like the Hammond organ (as shown in our previous event) the Moog became a serious competitor to the electric guitar, making guitarist looking for eleven on their volume control as the only way to compete. Because of its fantastic and cosmic sound, it soon was embraced by the gods of the new progressive rock with bands like Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer.

As keyboardist of Yes, Rick Wakeman said the instrument 'absolutely changed the face of music.'

Besides progressive rock, Jazz legends like Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock added the Minimoog to their arsenal, delivering devastating jazz solos and Bob Marley introduced the Minimoog when the band first played in the UK on the BBC.

After taking the progressive rock and jazz world by storm, it made its way back towards the synthesizer’s roots, in electronic pop and experimental music. One of the most well-know band using the Minimoog for this purpose was Kraftwerk on their albums Autobahn and The Man-Machine. Shortly after that, the characteristic sound of the Minimoog became an important part of the synth-pop era and inspired an entire generation of electronic musicians like Brian Eno and Ultravox.

Since then the Minimoog transformed the music landscape of every musical genre, from the R&B/Soul of Earth Wind & Fire and the most successful recorded album of all time, Thriller from Michael Jackson, till the West-Coast sound of Dr. Dré and the industrial music of Trent Reznor.

But a major transition occurred when electronic music was slightly forced back into the underground and analog synthesizer started shaping the sound of House Music, Techno and all other genres of electronic music. This is where the Minimoog found a new homebase in the hands of producers and bands like Carl Craig, 808-state, Portishead and many more leading to the iconic sound in today’s electronic music and the production of new Moog synthesizers and soundalikes.

The original Minimoog is a true classic. But what makes the sound so special?
On the 1st of December, MarcoAntonio Spaventi (music producers, mastering engineer, analog synth evangelist and Abbey Road Institute lecturer) will give a Masterclass about the Minimoog and it’s unique sound at Abbey Road Institute Amsterdam. In order to share his love for the Moog, this masterclass will be live streamed through Facebook Live.

MarcoAntonio will talk about the differences between the original Minimoog Model D and the Minimoog Voyager, the unique features of both instruments and the technical aspects that makes it sound so special. But most important, you can hear them live including a jam with an hardware sequencer at the end of the session!

Next to the above mentioned synths, we will have a variety of other Moogs to explore the different sounds and flavours of Robert Moog’s legacy. With one very special model…

The Memorymoog!
Many say the Memorymoog is like having 6 Minimoogs stacked in one machine! While thats not entirely true it does sound like no other poly synth with a very specific and massive character. Just like the Minimoog, the Memorymoog gets his monumental sound due to certain imperfections of the instrument. A perfect example of finding perfection in imperfection! MarcoAntonio will explain you all about the different features that makes this synth so unique."

Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living

Published on Jan 21, 2013 MoogMusicInc·222 videos

"In honor of the new Moog Sub Phatty analog synthesizer's release today, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam 'Lilfuchs' Fuchs collaborated on a short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. You can hear the new Sub Phatty analog synthesizer in Flying Lotus's original score for the animation."

"New Moog Sub Phatty Synthesizer Sets New Standard for Analog Sound Design

ASHEVILLE, NC – January 21, 2013 – Moog Music is proud to introduce the Sub Phatty analog synthesizer, a 25 full-size key, 31 knob production instrument that melds the soul and functionality of vintage analog synthesizers with new and unique sound design tools. Building on the tradition of Moog’s highly successful Phatty family, the Sub Phatty grinds and screams with a uniquely aggressive voice — making it the new standard for synth bass, analog percussion, and a wide range of sound design applications.

The engineers at Moog Music have reimagined the Sub Phatty’s sound engine. The instrument features two variable waveshape oscillators that perform with extreme clarity and accuracy while requiring almost no warm-up time. Users can simply power up, dial in settings, and put their fingers to work on the keys to summon crisp and detailed waveforms with vibrant sound that brims with high-frequency harmonic content, yet stays true to the rich sonic density that has become synonymous with Moog synthesizers.

“We set out to design the grittiest Moog synth ever, one that still offers all of the great sound and flexibility that Moog synthesizers are known for, but that also really has teeth,” said Mike Adams, President of Moog Music. “One of the great advantages of the Sub Phatty is its ability to conjure aggressive sounds that cut through a dance mix, stand out on-stage, or burn up the studio. We think that everyone from producers and sound designers to DJs and synthesists will have a blast using it.”

The Sub Phatty’s filter includes the transformative new Multidrive circuit, a unique combination of OTA distortion and FET drive, which serves as the sparkplug in the instrument’s powerful sound. At low settings, Multidrive adds warmth and width; when pushed, it delivers a screaming snarl that is highly reactive to resonance, waveshape, and oscillator level.

Users can access a total of 16 definable presets via the 4x4 preset matrix on the Sub Phatty’s front panel. This matrix also doubles as a control panel for the instrument’s subcutaneous nerve center — users can select filter poles, set pitch bend amounts, toggle between legato glide modes, and more. These functions can also be accessed via the included Sub Phatty standalone/plugin editor.

The configuration of the Sub Phatty’s mixer section allows users to easily determine, at any given moment, which sources overdrive the filter and which simply pass through it. The mixer section further hosts controls for a square wave sub oscillator; those operating the Sub Phatty can utilize this tool as a third oscillator for added depth, or to craft their own customized incarnations of monstrous Moog bass. Also in the mixer section is a noise generator voiced to deliver rich, punchy low-frequency content, designed for analog percussion and sound effects.

In honor of the Sub Phatty’s release, experimental multi-genre music producer, Flying Lotus, and Adult Swim veteran, Adam Fuchs collaborated on a psychedelic short animation called Moog Sub Phatty: New Machine For Living. Flying Lotus’s original score was made primarily with the Sub Phatty synthesizer and dynamically shows off its bold sound. This unique animation can be viewed on Moog’s website at www.moogmusic.com/animation.
The Sub Phatty brings a fearless new voice to the Moog family of synthesizers. With its streamlined interface and dynamic sound design flexibility, this new synth fuses an unparalleled connection between human & machine, opening the door to unprecedented sonic exploration.

And the press release:
"Dave Smith Instruments Announces Sequential Prophet X Synthesizer, Featuring Samples-plus-Synthesis Sound Engine

New Instrument Boasts Samples by Acclaimed Sound Developers 8Dio, Stereo Analog Filters, and Full Synthesis Capabilities

San Francisco, CA—May 1, 2018—Dave Smith Instruments today announced the Sequential Prophet X, a new, bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo (16-voice mono) synthesizer that combines samples and synthesis. At the heart of its sound is a newly developed engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters.

Dave Smith commented: “The Prophet X is a powerful evolution of the Prophet series. Musicians have been asking for samples through real analog flters for a long time. We’ve given them not only that, but also all of the synthesis capabilites and awesome sound you’d expect from a Prophet.”

For sample content, Dave Smith turned to acclaimed sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling,” a detailed approach to sampling that aims to capture all of the nuances and idiosyncracies of a particular sound or instrument. 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann put it this way: “We’re known for going anywhere and everywhere with sounds. We embrace all sounds as music and feel that if you can capture the musical soul of a sound, you can make it into an instrument. The Prophet X gives musicians a very immediate and responsive way to access this expressiveness.”

The 150 GB sample library in the Prophet X includes numerous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as an extensive collection of ambient and cinematic effects. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the synthesizer’s many sound-sculpting functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and other tools. The Prophet X also provides 50 gigabytes of internal storage for importing additional samples. Several sample libraries will be available from 8Dio at launch. Support for user-created sample content is planned for December, 2018.

A dual-effects engine provides multiple reverbs, two delays (standard and BBD), a chorus, flanger, phase shifter, rotating speaker, high-pass filter, and distortion. In stacked or split voice mode, you can apply two different effects to each layer. Effects parameters can be modulated through the mod matrix as can the samples themselves. A polyphonic step sequencer allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step, per layer. The Prophet X features a premium-quality, five-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, USB support, and three OLED displays.

Dave Smith summed up the new instrument: 'Composers will love the Prophet X for soundtracks and synth geeks will love it for its sound mangling potential. But it’s really for everyone because it covers such a wide range of sounds. The new analog filter design we’re using is not only fantastic for synth sounds, but also does something special for the samples.” Added 8Dio co-founder Tawnia Knox: “The Prophet X has almost infinite posibilites. But more importantly, it has a soul. It’s alive. You can touch your sounds in a different way than you ever could.'

The Sequential Prophet X will be available in the second quarter of 2018 with a projected MAP of $3,999."

"Program 24 brings you the pure sound of '80s Italo Disco inspired by two wild synths nearly lost to time, the Solton Programmer 24 and SM100. The Programmer 24 is an unassuming 3-octave keyboard released in 1985, it contained everything necessary to produce complete arrangements, and real time performance features perfect for backing up the band. It sported a full 8-bit PCM drum section, analog bass and lead arpeggio with analog filters, violin, cello, and 3 flute voices (8', 4', 2'), a featured arranger, chord and pattern sequencers. To top it off, it had individual outputs for 8 drum parts and bass, full MIDI, and a tape interface for storage.

What really caught our attention with this little beast was the sound. Right out of the box it just sounds good, packed with an '80s character we simply adore. The drums are clean and punchy, the bass and arpeggio pack vintage funk, and all the voices work together to create a full and truly classic sound.

The SM100 is another cool analog synth, with DCOs and a phenomenal chorus/ensemble effect. We multisampled every sound allowing you to engage the chorus effect just like you would on the real thing. All-in-all these two fantastic machines deliver tons of flavor and great sounding voices ready to lay down the groove for a new generation.

Program 24 delivers sounds and arrangements from a special period of time, and new and unique ones inspired by these machines. We captured every drum sound (and some extras from mythical machines like the DMX, Linn, 8o8 and more), along with the full range of each analog voice, MIDI drum patterns, classic and chord follower arpeggiators, and discrete preset recall for each sound. Numerous included multi kits, single sound presets, arpeggiators, drums kits and drums MIDI files deliver both pure vintage and all-new sounds and patterns designed by our team, giving you a huge variety of both classic '80s sounds and contemporary patch designs.

For those looking for the complete package the included multi instrument offers a fully-loaded and fully-programmable workstation allowing you to program complete arrangements with your DAW, using all the hardware voices together. For added convenience and sound sculpting potential we've included 2 reverb sends and 2 delay sends that can be fed by any of the drum or instrument voices, along with per-instrument multimode filters, drive, phasor, and EQ. Finally, 2-bus effects including drive, compressor and EQ help you add punch and polish to the mix without leaving the UI.

As well, we've made each of the instrument sections available separately, allowing you to call up only the drums, bass, strings and organs, or accompaniment voices as you need them. Each individual instrument is identical to its multi counterpart, offering the same effect section, sends and presets. A terrific way to focus on sound design, or simply add one or two layers to your production."
