RIP Gert Jalass of Moon Modular
Some sad news sent my way via John L Rice who helped man the Moon Modular booth at NAMM every year. Gert Jalass, the man behind Moon Modular has passed away. I met Gert serveral times at NAMM and he was always a pleasure to talk to. He always welcomed me with a smile. He was genuinely passionate about synthesisers and the synth community. I haven't been able to make events lately and was looking forward to seeing him again. I'm so saddened that I won't be able to. I am sincerely going to miss him.
You can find posts featuring Gert here, and of course posts featuring Moon Modular here.

Behringer Pro-800: Retro/Vintage Lead Presets. Demo. No talk
video upload by Anton Anru
"Retro Leads is a collection of 50 patches for Behringer Pro-800. The bank is dedicated to vintage/retro/lo-fi sound: detuned, noisy, tape-style with flutter, wow, jitter, and it covers a wide range of tones: warm and soft, cold and distant, bright and dark, static and evolving.
The presets are expressive: they are velocity-sensitive, aftertouch opens the filter, modwheel adds vibrato.
🔮 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/pro-...
The soundset is suitable for many genres: ambient, electronica, IDM, trip-hop, lounge, downtempo, funk, jazz, pop, chill out, new age, cinematic, trance, deep, progressive, techno, breaks, jungle, drum and bass, dub and others.
Performed by Dmitry Chemyrev.
Drum and chord samples from the demo are not included to the soundset."

Elektron Model Cycles / MELODIC TECHNO / by G I P N O Z E R
video upload by G I P N O Z E R
"Making electronic music is an amazing feeling! This is not only a great way to express yourself creatively, but also to make others happy. Working on a track and turning it into something more than just music that can be shared with the whole world is a unique experience. It's so nice to be able to translate your ideas into sound, and then hear the reaction of people who say how much they liked it. Electronic music can be an incredibly powerful way to communicate with people and make them smile.
Good luck to everyone.

Serge 5u Tones and Timbres
video upload by Rhythmicons
"These are 5u Serge circuits by Ken Stone/Catgirl Synth and Elby designs, assembled and paneled by by Lower West Side studios. The Dual Universal Slope Generators are the sound sources going into the STG Soundlabs mixer before heading into the Resonant EQ and '73 Filter. From there the signal is going to a Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo, a Roland DC-50, and an AKG BX-10. With this program I tried to capture what it is like to try to maintain a smile while feeling awful inside. I began with the desire to create something beautiful with the Serge, but the pull towards the experimental is sometimes far too great to resist."

New Casio Watch Inspired by John Mayer's Childhood Keyboard
video upload by Hodinkee
"The G-SHOCK Ref. 6900-PT1 By John Mayer features a dusty matte blue case and strap, a more playful color combination that’s an excellent companion to the first two collaborations. Peach, coral, and turquoise from the PT-1 keyboard were brought in to highlight the 'Triple Graph' display, which sits right at home in the soft cream dial. Darker grey was pulled from the sharp and flat keys of the PT-1 keyboard and added to the illuminator button. All four indicators for the buttons share the navy color from the writing on the PT-1, a perfect accent on the lighter blue background. The G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1 By John Mayer gives you both the toughness you expect from a G-SHOCK with a colorway that will make your inner creative child smile."
"Being musicians and music fans, we here at Reverb know John Mayer for his guitar-playing and his best-selling signature Silver Sky. But he's also deeply invested in a whole other type of gear: watches.
Mayer, the horologist, is as much a figure to fellow watch lovers as he is to Boss BD-2 enthusiasts, sitting down for multiple interviews about his extensive collection and even getting into the watch design game himself.
In recent years, he's collaborated with the premiere watch site Hodinkee and a brand that, like Mayer, straddles the world of music gear and watches: Casio.
The partnership's latest creation is the Casio G-Shock Ref. 6900-PT1, a digital watch inspired by the PT-1 Mini Synthesizer.
Casio first built the PT-1 synth in 1982 and continued production until 1988, meaning it was one of the many affordable synths and samplers the company released during Mayer's early childhood.
The toy-like PT-1 is a monosynth — meaning it can only play one note at a time—but it packs in more features than parents probably expected. While there are just four simple tones (piano, violin, flute, and the mysterious 'fantasy'), there's a built-in drum machine with the same spread of rhythms you'd find on an old Roland or Korg, and—pretty amazingly, especially to a kid—a sequencer.
To really seal the deal for 'home keyboard' playing, it can run on four double-AA batteries, has its own speaker, and a headphone output.
John Mayer's new G-Shock takes cues from his own childhood PT-1, with its blue enclosure, though you can also find the synth in white, pink, black, and red."

You might remember the recent break-in at Malekko Heavy Industries posted here, and on Malekko.
Joshua Holley is selling his Sequential Prophet-5 Rev3.2 previously owned by the late Dwayne Goettel of Skinny Puppy to recoup funds.
From the lising:
"Ugh, this suuucks...but here we go.
Up for sale is Dwaynes old P5 Rev 3.2 (no MIDI)
I purchased this a while back non functioning and restored it back to playing condition. I left the keyboard chassis and keys with black spots from touring back in the day so it's super cool to see. The keys aren't perfectly level..for some reason I decided to keep it as close to original as possible...just functioning perfectly. cEvin signed it and dated 2003..its still there and puts a smile on my face when I play it. The only reason I'd consider selling this is due to a theft at my shop..there will be lots if instruments up for sale. Read about it in the link below."

Theft at Malekko Heavy Industry
Joshua Holley of Malekko Heavy Industry wrote in to let us know there was a break-in at his shop. The thief stole about $65,000 worth of personal items. The insurance company won't cover most of it, so he is offering modular art pieces for sale to hopefully recoup some of his losses.
The following is a repost from his site. Please share this with others.
"On August 7th 2022 two males broke into an adjacent business in my building and managed to make their way into my shop via a shared back door. The thieves stole many personal items, sentimental gifts from colleagues, friends, things I will never see again, about $65,000.00 worth of personal items stolen. After almost 2 months dealing with Insurance companies, ultimately they offered little help, citing a convenient loophole stating since stolen items were personal property the business policies won’t cover most of it, giving me about 12% of the loss.
Out of the many stolen items, the one that hurt the most is a one of a kind Minimoog used by the band Skinny Puppy. Anyone that knows me knows how important of an instrument this is and how devastated I’ve been since the break in. With the exception of a Facebook post hoping to flush the thieves out I haven’t been able to talk about it much, watching the video surveillance of the guy carting it out sickens me, I’ve had to watch it several times, each time waiting a week or so in between viewings because I’m so pissed.
A month ago I came up with an idea to right a wrong so I decided to make a set of art based off the stolen Minimoog. My thought is that to have a set of art based on such an iconic synthesizer would make a great conversation piece, look great on any wall, bring happiness to fellow synth nerds and help replace some of the items that CAN be replaced, and basically help turn the negative energy surrounding this ordeal into a positive.
I’m calling the set “The Greater Right of the Wrong” (see what I did there). I sourced a frame maker to make some custom frames in brown to represent the wood from the instrument, and then I had 5 individual pieces of aluminum made to size, brushed, and anodized. I will laser etch all 5 pieces with the blocks of the instrument. They will look like what’s pictured except each edition will be numbered and have “GROTW xxx/200″ small in the lower corner.
The frames are approximately 12” tall and side by side touching the set is about 2ft 10 inches, and about 3ft with nice spacing in between. This is a pre-order. I have approved the metal and frame samples and now they need to go into production. I anticipate shipping at the end of December. This will be limited to 200 sets, numbered in order sold, and once they are sold I will not make any more.
Thank you in advance to everyone who supports this endeavor. It’s been an extremely personal project that I hope puts a smile on all our faces for years to come."

"An abandoned modular session. In a famous small village, in the south west of France, there is a little mountain. At the top of it, what used to be a cableway station for 60 years, have been still standing there, in the hands of Entropy, for more than two decades now.
The abandoned sessions in Nature are always the most challenging, but also the most transformative. The path that leads to the chosen place is often long, steep, and lined with many obstacles.
Climbing this mountain, In the full darkness of the middle of the night, with only headlamps, and all our distorted senses, as only indicators, quickly becomes a type of active meditation, especially on the session day, with our heavy equipment.
And finally, you start to distinguish the contours of the huge station’s antenna, getting bigger and bigger, as we move on, meter by meter on the last hundred ones.
When we arrive, the connection is immediate. There is nothing comparable to this precise sensation. The surrounding sounds blend together, compose these familiar but unique melodies, in a calm and quiet mind, ready to receive.
Patch Notes:
In this session, the combo XPO + QPAS is at the heart of the patch, omnipresent.
The multi-dimensional aspect of these two modules truly resonates with the multi-dimensional experience I live through my process, and in these post human places.
In this patch, I use the XPO’s Pulse Width modulation and wave-folding stereo outputs, as well as the triangle wave one. The signals are then multiplied and sent through different filters and effects, QPAS being one important of them, here using its Low Pass and Smile Pass outputs. The different parameters are modulated by Wogglebug + hands.
This combo is accompanied, among others, by extra MN family’s members; Strega, STO(x3), DPO, Optomix, Morphagene, Maths, Mimeophon, Erbe Verb."

A spiritual & musical pilgrimage on a mountain,
in the south west of France.
For those you've been following me for the last years,
you know i've been working around and refining a
special creative process.
The different steps of my creative process are ;
1. The Research of the Place
2. The First Exploration
3. The Retranscription
4. Layers of Perception (session day)
5. Sharing the Experience.
In this mini documentary, step 2 "The First Exploration",
and 4 "Layers of Perception (session day)" are mixed together.
The ascension on the session day was so challenging
physically & mentally, that we couldn't record a lot during it.
We are a small 2 people team 👥
It is an excerpt of a longer documentary that will explore
all the steps of my process, coming in 2023.

"Out Soon...
It's been a while since I sat down with the Novation PEAK and decided to make Zenith Vol 3, which also works for the Novation Summit. Again, another 128 Patches, however with Vol 2 I concentrated on using the additional Wavetables for the Patches, so had a more "Digital" edge, however with Vol 3, I've just made Patches that I want to hear, play and put into Music.
There's Analog Pads, Poly's, lots of Motion Pads and Stringers. Plenty of Bass & Lead and some beautiful Digital Soundscapes. All 128 Patches have Animate Buttons assigned, often to multiple parameters, as well as Aftertouch and Mod Wheel.

Dave Smith Has Passed Away
I just heard the news.
I am at a loss for words...
Update: I added some words below. As you likely are, I am in complete shock. Please be kind.
via @SequentialLLC
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Dave Smith has died. If you’d like to share your thoughts and memories of Dave, please reach out to us on our website: sequential.com"
Update: a statement from Sequential:
"American Synthesizer Pioneer and Sequential Founder Dave Smith Passes at 72
San Francisco, CA—June 1, 2022 — It is with great sadness that Sequential today shares the news that its founder, American synthesizer pioneer Dave Smith, has died. The company and his family take solace in the fact that Dave was on the road at the time of his passing, doing what he loved best, and in the company of family, friends, and artists.
Focusrite CEO Tim Carroll commented: “Dave’s passing is a great loss to not only the music community and music technology, but to the world itself. To say that he changed music is no exaggeration. Dave’s legacy is one of creative passion and a deep and lifelong love for music, music technology, and the musicians that continue to enrich our world by using his instruments. At 72 he was still actively designing his next generation of synths. At the same time, he had the foresight to mentor and build Sequential into a team that will continue his work and legacy without pause. Dave will be greatly missed, but his contributions to music will never be forgotten.”
Though Dave Smith and Sequential had been scheduled to appear at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim from June 3 to June 5, Sequential will now decline to participate out of respect for Dave Smith’s memory.
For those wishing to send condolences to the Smith family and share thoughts and memories of Dave and his creations, Sequential invites the public to send comments to RememberingDave@sequential.com.
About Sequential
Originally launched in 2002 as Dave Smith Instruments, Sequential was founded by legendary electronic instrument designer Dave Smith and is helmed by respected audio and music industry veteran CEO David Gibbons. Dave Smith’s many accomplishments included the creation of the Prophet-5 — the world’s first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer — and his legacy as the primary driving force behind MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)."
Update:
Some words: I am in complete shock. I don't know what to say. As you all know Dave was so vibrant and full of life. It's difficult for me to process that he is gone. I met Dave a few times at NAMM and he always had a smile on his face. He was always welcoming, honest, and supportive.
My first Sequential Circuits synth was a Multi-Trak, followed by a Six-Trak, Pro-One, Prophet-5, and finally a Prophet-VS. I picked up an Evolver desktop early on, and I picked up an OB-6 desktop after selling my OB-Xa.
As you know, there are two large Sequential banners on top of the site. Sequential (and previously DSI) has been the site's largest sponsor to date. They have supported the site since October 15, 2015. Knowing I had Dave Smith's support meant the world to me. It's a humbling experience to know one of your heroes believes in your work enough to support it. Running a site like this can be challenging as some people can be quick to judge, and it's impossible to please everyone. Whenever I have doubts I'd remind myself I do have people that appreciate and see value in what I do. Knowing Dave Smith was one of them meant the world to me. I'm just one individual he made an impact on. His genuine love for what he did, and his open, kind, approachable, supportive, and just fun demeanor made our world a better place. His instruments will continue to have a positive impact on others for generations to come.
If you ever want to know what the most difficult aspect of running a site like this is, it's this. It's when we lose our heroes and we have to post something that doesn't even come close to describing how incredible a person was to you. I don't know what to say... Just, the older we get, the more of our heroes pass, and the more we realize how short and precious life is. We are all running out of time. Cherish life and those you love. Make life better for yourself and for others. Appreciate life and appreciate your heroes. Don't dwell on those that refuse to see the best in you. Focus on those who do. Dave Smith was that to me and I will miss him so much.

A Special Birthday Message from Bob's Wife, Ileana Grams-Moog via Moog Music
via Moog Music
"We have the privilege to share a personal message from Bob's wife, Ileana Grams-Moog, composed for the occasion with you all in mind. We hope it brings you a smile today:
It is always a pleasure to talk or write about Bob, as it gives me the chance to revive happy memories I may not have focused on for a while. Joy, humor, and fun are especially appealing, because they were such wonderful features of Bob's character.
Bob's vitality and engagement with whatever he was doing stood out when you met him. His smile lit up his face; and his voice, very resonant and mellow, lit up as well when you asked him how he was, and he responded, "Great!" That engagement and enthusiasm was contagious, so that sharing an experience like a dinner, a show, or a trip with him made it so much more enjoyable for me. And it persisted into any conversation you had with him, as he was fully focused on you. If you said anything funny, you got to hear his wonderful hearty laugh as he enjoyed what you said and often responded in kind.
Bob loved humor. He was a lifelong reader of the New Yorker (his hometown magazine, one could say, though he came from Queens), and the cartoons were his favorite feature. On the weekend, what he most loved to do indoors was to lie down on the sofa with the latest issue, and read it from cover to cover. I could tell when he got to a cartoon that tickled him by the whole-body guffaw he would suddenly give, and I would always go over and see it so I could share it with him.
Other than Roz Chast, who is still active, I think, most of the cartoonists he loved are no longer around, and their names may be unfamiliar unless you are a fan of old cartoons. He enjoyed quirky drawing, like George Price's or Koren's, and the gentle goofiness of Koren and Barsotti, among others, though he could respond to more pointed and sarcastic wit as well. In general, though, a certain wry incongruity or insightful depiction of human oddness was most likely to touch off his delighted response. A cartoon that stands out for me was one of his favorites: A man is mowing the lawn on a mini-tractor. His wife is watching. The man's thought bubble shows him seated on a monster earth-mover; his wife's shows him as a little boy on a toy tractor. His delight in this cartoon clearly included his awareness of how he felt riding his own farm tractor when we went out to his old house. This self-awareness and gentle self-mockery was part of his character.
He was certainly a delighted responder to the humor of others—in drawing, writing, or conversation. But he was also a great teller of anecdotes, especially funny ones, and I think everyone who heard him enjoyed it. He was a very acute observer, with insight into how behavior revealed personality and motivation, and he had the rare gift of being able to apply these skills both to painful situations and to himself. So a number of his anecdotes were about situations that might not have seemed funny at the time at all, especially to him. He told me about a very difficult time in his life, when his company had been bought by an investor who insisted that he go on the road to sell shares in the company he was now a subsidiary of. He must have loathed the assignment, but he did it to the very best of his ability. He noticed that his prospects—picked out for him in advance—were men who prized power and prestige, polar opposites to him.
So, when he was sent to Chicago in the winter, although his taste in clothing ran to comfortable work pants and a work shirt, he bought himself a suede coat with a full fur lining to put over his business suit and tie. His reception, wearing this coat, was dramatically different—it was clear that he was impressing his prospects. The punchline, as he told this story to me, came as he was trying to persuade a prospect of something that wasn't going over well. So he stood up, loomed over the man, and opened his coat to show the full fur lining, at which point the man visibly shrank back and conceded the point Bob saw the resemblance to a dominance contest between animals, and it struck him as funny as well as a sad commentary about how much decision-making is done.
My retelling lacks the life-giving vividness, enthusiasm, and laughter of Bob's telling, but I hope gets across a tiny bit of the extra-ordinary person I was privileged to be married to.
