Dave Smith Instruments & Pioneer DJ TORAIZ AS-1 Official Introduction

Published on Jan 18, 2017 Pioneer DJ

"More than ever, producers are making tracks using electronic instruments such as synthesizers and drum machines. And now, in collaboration with Dave Smith Instruments, we’ve created a new monophonic synthesizer for music production and live performances: the TORAIZ AS-1. The synth is the second musical instrument in our TORAIZ series that brings new creative possibilities to the studio and stage, and its release follows the launch of our popular TORAIZ SP-16 live sampler in August 2016.

The TORAIZ AS-1 is driven by a fully programmable, true analog synthesis engine based on the discrete analog circuitry in Dave Smith Instruments’ Prophet-6 synthesizer – a modern reboot of his classic Prophet-5. Working closely with Dave Smith himself, we’ve created a synth that produces powerful analog sound and makes an ideal addition to the set-ups of professional and aspiring producers.

Our experience in making DJ equipment and production gear has been poured into the development of the new synth’s user interface and performance features. The intuitive controls include parameter knobs that let you make both subtle and dramatic changes to the tone of your music to create your own personalised sound. You can use the touchpad-style keyboard and slider to manipulate sounds during performances. And it’s easy to manipulate the seven on-board effects, which – with the addition of a brand-new digital distortion – come from the Prophet-6 synth.

You can connect the TORAIZ AS-1 synth to the TORAIZ SP-16 live sampler via MIDI and use the sampler’s sophisticated sequencer to create even more complex patterns with the powerful analog sounds you’ve created in the synthesizer. Together, the two TORAIZ instruments can be connected to your DJM mixer via Pro DJ Link and MIDI, creating a set-up where the CDJs play the track, the TORAIZ SP-16 adds loops and one-shots, and the TORAIZ AS-1 generates unique analog leads in sync with the BPM of the music.

The TORAIZ AS-1 will be available from March"

Pioneer DJ Debuts TORAIZ SP-16 Sampler/Sequencer with Dave Smith Filters

Pioneer DJ TORAIZ SP-16 Official Introduction

Published on Apr 5, 2016 Pioneer DJ

Dave Smith : The Interview

We now know what this was. The following is the official press release followed by key features. Be sure to click on the images to the left for the full size shots.

"New DJ Live-Performance Instrument Features Filters Adapted from Prophet-6 Synth

San Francisco, CA—April 5, 2016—Dave Smith Instruments today announced that it has collaborated with Pioneer DJ, the market leader in DJ equipment and software, to provide analog filters for the company’s TORAIZ SP-16 sampler/sequencer. Boasting a 16-step sequencer, 16-voice polyphony, and 2GB of pre-loaded samples and loops, the new instrument allows DJs to trigger loops, one-shots, and electronic percussion live with its 16 multi-colored performance pads and other real-time controls.

Said Dave Smith: 'When Pioneer DJ approached us about collaborating on one of their products, we were very excited. Given their expertise and deep knowledge of the DJ market, we knew that it was bound to be interesting.' Added Smith: 'And when they asked us to adapt our filters from the Prophet-6, we immediately saw that it was going to be a great fit.'

The TORAIZ SP-16 features two discrete voltage-controlled filters developed by Dave Smith Instruments: a four-pole, resonant, low-pass inspired by the original 1970’s-era Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 filter, and a two-pole high-pass filter. 'The Prophet filters add real analog warmth to the TORAIZ SP-16. They also allow a lot of creative sound manipulation when you use the live-performance controls of the instrument,' explained Smith. 'DJs will put them to good use, I’m sure.'

The TORAIZ SP-16 features a 7-inch color touch screen for accessing its factory sound library and viewing sound and performance parameters. The 16-step sequencer can store up to 256 patterns. Sixteen sequence step buttons allow color coding of sounds. Patterns can be saved as “scenes” for instant recall in the studio or on stage. When the instrument is connected to a Pioneer DJ CDJ or XDJ DJ Deck using Pioneer DJ’s Pro DJ Link, the system synchronizes its loops and one-shots to the beat of a master deck. (Users will need to update the TORAIZ SP-16 to the latest firmware to use this feature.) MIDI clock support allows users to connect and synchronize other devices.

The TORAIZ SP-16 is manufactured and sold by Pioneer DJ Corporation. It will be available in summer of 2016. Price and specifications subject to change.

KEY FEATURES

1. Create up to 256 patterns using the 16-step sequencer

Drop sounds into the sequencer to create your own 16-step loops and use the six dials to modulate the sounds. The multicoloured buttons reflect the colours you’ve assigned each sound: for example, kick drums in red. You can save your patterns then play them back instantly in the booth or on stage.

2. 7-inch full-colour touch screen with detailed sample information

The large touch screen puts all the information you need in your line of sight. Quickly browse and load samples, and allocate colours to them for a visual guide. Or see real-time waveforms and full details of the sample’s characteristics, and use the dials underneath to manipulate a variety of parameters.

3. Multicoloured Performance Pads with Velocity Mode

The Performance Pads are taken from our DJ controllers to give you a truly tactile experience. Load up to 16 samples to the pads, then finger drum freely to layer sounds on-the-fly. The lights reflect the colours you’ve assigned to each sound, while Velocity Mode lets you control the volume of the sample with how hard you hit the pad.

4. 8GB of flash memory and real-time processing for non-stop music production

The TORAIZ SP-16 delivers 16-voice polyphony so you can play all 16 samples at once – even when you’re using time stretch or editing the sound using the touch screen amp envelope. The 8GB of flash memory means you’ve got plenty of space – and you can use it as a stand-alone unit, with no need for a laptop.

5. Analogue filters from Dave Smith Instruments' Prophet-6 synthesiser

We've collaborated with Dave Smith to add the analogue filters from his iconic Prophet-6 synthesiser to the TORAIZ SP-16. Use the dials to sculpt your sound – manipulating Drive, Cut Off and Resonance – and add true analogue warmth and presence.

6. Pro DJ Link and MIDI clock mean you’ll never miss a beat

Add the TORAIZ SP-16 to your CDJ or XDJ set-up using Pro DJ Link and the sampler will snap your one-shots and loops to the beat of the master deck. So you can layer multiple sounds over your tracks and they’ll always be in sync. It also has a MIDI clock so you can connect other devices via USB and stay in sync, and we’ll be adding connectivity with DAWs and synths at a later date.

7. Other features:

Use the touch strip to control various parameters

Comes with Loopmasters samples already on board

Input ports Phone x 2
Output ports Phone x 8, Headphones
Other ports USB, LAN, MIDI
Max external dimension 436.5 x 261.2 x 74.3 mm (W x D x H)
Weight 3.2 kg

TORAIZ AS-1 - a Berlin School sequencing style sound demo

Published on Feb 15, 2019 Alba Ecstasy

"👉DSI PATCHES?! 👉 https://www.albaecstasy.ro

A short story of my Dave Smith Instruments experience.
Once upon a time I was searching for a cheap keyboard MIDI controller around $150.
I ended buying DSI Evolver (about $600 at that time). Tremendous sound!
Years later, I’m selling it: pots starts to “fall”.

Enters MoPho: fat, dirty yellow box. Instant buy. Years later, I’m selling it: programming was exhausting.

Some strange experiences with Prophet 6: weak knobs, loose top panel.

Years later, Toraiz is released. Me (not impressed): “meh!”...
2019: my friend Robert ask me if I want to test the Toraiz. Me: “what, that fancy Monotribe?! Haha, no thanks!” He brings it to me. Me: plug cables, play notes. WHAT?!

A week later: me, after intense searches I find a cheap B-stock and I’m ordering it!
Yep. I was so wrong about Toraiz. One of the few synths I judged before testing it.
And this is very wrong. First test, and then speak your opinion.

And in this case, I think TORAIZ is BIG.
Look for one. You won’t regret!

In this video, I choose a random a factory preset and start tweaking it. Programming looks much easier on Toraiz, even it has the same linear menu structure as MoPho, but, I don't know: I find it much easier to dive into its menu.

Delay: H-Delay Waves
Reverb: Valhalla Vintagege"

SEQUENCING 2x Toraiz AS-1

Published on Feb 26, 2019 Alba Ecstasy

"Maybe you are interested to hear how two #ToraizAS1 would fit together in a track, both being sequenced.
On the Toraiz that plays bass, I run a 120BPM sequence. On the other one, a #sequence is playing at 60BPM. No connectivity between them, both are manually synced (and this can be heard a little bit later where they become little out of sync)(and this also shows that at different tempos (even I used a ratio of the tempo), two different Toraiz are...different!).
BTW: both Toraiz are siblings, having consecutive serial numbers: my friend bought it first, last year, mine I bought it a few days ago!
Effects: Boss DD7, Boss RV-6, Neunaber Slate (a little reverb for the bass line)."

2x Toraiz AS-1 - ambient Berlin School melodic demo track

Published on Feb 24, 2019 Alba Ecstasy

First: of course it's a Berlin School demo. That's my area of "expertise"!

Second: don't mind the "frying potatoes" noise when gain exceed the maximum admitted by my Neunaber Slate.

Third: no, they're not both #ToraizAS1 mine, only the #ambient pad playing one! It just wouldn't make sense that at &1000 to have ⅓ of a #Prophet6.
FUN FACT: these two Toraiz are siblings, even they're purchased months apart (my friend bought it first, last year!)

Fourth: ...I forgot...

Effects: Neunaber Slate for the Toraiz playing the ambient pads (and because of that distortion I added H-Delay Waves to sugar coat the mess). Boss Rv6 & Dd-7 for the Toraiz playing the sequence.

Enjoy!

"Here's the 2nd video of my new series, the Cave Sessions, where I invite you deep into my woman cave to watch my solo jam sessions, featuring special guest, Ginger! Jamming and improvising is my way of discovering and learning more about my gear, my voice, and creating new ideas without any rules. I also compose a lot of my songs this way. This time I am improvising on the Roland Juno 60, Sequential Prophet-60 (Master) and Toraiz-SP16 (Slave)!

2. Cave Sessions with Sheenah Ko (welcome to my creative process)

"Welcome to my cave....where laundry and synthesizers have their place. I invite you to watch my song-writing process. The way I write songs is through meditative and improvised jam sessions; I press record and let myself go, and because each instrument is being recorded separately, I can go back to my jam and sculpt/chip away and create a new song. MY GEAR: Sequential Prophet-6 (Master), Nord Stage 2, Sequential/Pioneer DJ Toraiz SP-16 (slave), Roland Juno-60"

About Sheenah Ko:
"I'm a professional keyboardist and solo artist based out of Montreal, Canada, and a Sequential Keyboards artist. I am often composing music under my name (Sheenah Ko) or touring the world rocking international stages with so many rad bands like The Besnard Lakes, Antoine Corriveau, Le Couleur... (the roster is looooong). I love geeking out on synthesizers, writing trippy music, travelling, spending as much time as possible in nature, hanging with Ginger cat and spreading good vibes. I have a brand new album coming out on June 3, 2022 called FUTURE IS NOW, stay tuned!!!

"Demoing the sequencer, arpeggiator, two different sounds and the effects on the Toraiz AS-1 mono synth from Pioneer DJ and Dave Smith.

The Toraiz AS-1, from Pioneer DJ in collaboration with Dave Smith, is a phat sounding monophonic synthesizer that brings new creative worlds into the studio. It contains the same filter present in Dave Smith's legendary Prophet-6, as well as continuously variable triangle, sawtooth, and pulse waveshapes for extreme timbral manipulation. Even with the fully analog signal path, there is a digital brain that controls all the parameters, allowing one to save 495 different presets for quick recall of one's favorite sounds. Not only are the filters taken from the Prophet-6. The FX bank is also included in the AS-1, which provides a BB Delay, Distortion, Ring Mod, Chorus and Maestro Phaser.

Sequential Circuits Pro One vs Pioneer/DSI Toraiz AS-1 by INHALT

Published on Sep 20, 2017 INHALTVIDEO

http://inhalt.bigcartel.com/

"Ever since working on the factory bank patches for the Pioneer AS-1, we always felt that the sound hit close to home. And that home, for INHALT, is the Sequential Circuits Pro One. Now, in this video we put both units head to head to hear which one can out do the body music bass line. Both synths were recorded straight to Pro Tools HD via a Focusrite 2802 (Audient Mic Pres) and absolutely no fx or post processing was applied. What you are hearing is the dry signal playing back to 2 discrete channels on the desk. When the cut light is lit, that channel is muted. The similarities are so remarkable between the two synths, that often times we weren't sure which one we were hearing before we put the board tape on the desk. The characteristic is so strong between these two bass monsters that we are now developing an INHALT Pro One Sound Bank for the Toraiz AS-1 which will be available for download through our Big Cartel Shop. We hope you enjoy this comparison and find it useful. The AS-1 is a monster!!"
