The Vanishing Night

video upload by davidryle

"Good things happen in pairs sometimes...

Two new Synthetic Sound Labs 1201 TZ-VC Oscillators are the main project center. I sent the lower tuned sine wave (modulator) to the higher tuned (carrier) phase modulation input. I routed the modifier through a vca with a random S&H amount to give it a little life. The modulator was pitch tracked from one of a pair of Matrix Algorithmic Composer modules from SSL. The carrier was pitch stable. The wave of the carrier is a triangle wave through the Grove Audio G294A LPF. It is the final tuned percussive sound trailing at the end with the drone.
The other paired oscillators were the drone duet played by the STG Soundlabs vco's through a Q107 SVF in low pass. The pair of STG VMS sequencers are the pitch source.
The bass part is a trio of Mos-Lab 901's and an SSL 1200 vco. They are low pass filtered with the LWSS M401 Multimode Filter/Resonator. The upper Q960 step sequencer is the pitch source.
The opening synthetic pan drum sound is a Q106 saw wave and the square wave output of the second Matrix module run through the Oakley Ring Modulator and a Q150 LPF. The Q106 is pitch controlled by taking the Matrix cv through a quantizer and then a S&H to limit the cv range.
The second percussive voice was the PWM output of the modulator 1201 through a Mega Ohm Audio MA20 vcf in high pass then a EHX Grand Canyon reverb and finally stereo phase shifters from the Lexicon MX200.
Snare sound is the SSL Woven Spirits (MI Plaits) and the Kick is the Delptronics LDB-2e. Percussive timings are handled by the Moon Modular 563 Trigger Sequencer.
The drone loop arpeggio is the Dove Audio D900 Mu-Seq into a Q106 saw wave to an EHX Canyon pedal in multi-tapped delay mode."

In The Ninth Season (demo).mov

YouTube via davidryle | October 22, 2010

"This is a demonstration of the new Synthetic Sound Labs 1310 Digital Delay module. The device is capable of subtle doubling, hard timed delays and super flanging. I mostly am using it as a gentle flanger in this demo but it is far more powerful than what I demo here. You can get one for your 5U MU modular synthesizer by checking out the website at http://www.steamsynth.com/

I also finished a project where I was modifying a stock Q111 Pan/Fade module from Synthesizers.com. I added an attenuator pot to the control input and added an inverter circuit to the output #2. This enables the Panning portion of the module to output audio to two channels of my mixer in stereo. I have control over how wide the panning is and both output channels are normal (un-inverted) so there is no cancellation when sending to effects etc..

I am using several other delay units as well in this demo. TC Electronics D-Two is way in the background so it isn't really a factor. Strymon 's Blue Sky Reverberator is the heavy plate reverb in the background. The Korg Kaoss 3 pad is used to have some looping fun, but I tried to keep it low level so not to interfere with the demo of the 1310 delay module.

There are four separate voices playing in this piece from the modular. The sequencers are generating various time signatures and loops but all of the distorted flanging effect is the 1310 Digital Delay. This is one fun unit and a great addition to my modular synth.

The title is about the amount of time since I got serious about building a modular synth to work with. It has been a little over two years (9 seasons) since I made the commitment. No looking back and I am very happy with the move away from dedicated keyboards and soft synths (although I still use them for other things).

Thanks to Doug Slocum at Synthetic Sound Labs for the great delay module. He has other ideas in the works and I am very excited about the future of his endeavor."

A Progression of Angels

Published on Oct 2, 2013 davidryle·128 videos

"A new Encore Electronics Frequency Shifter prompted me to patch the modular synthsizer for this piece. This consists of a single vco (Synthetic Soundlabs 1200) with PWM from a Segwencer and CGS dual LFO. The pulse wave goes direct to the Encore FS and the Up and Down outs are routed to the Modcan 73B Dual Delay. The Frequency Shifter has a cv input from a Yusynth voltage controlled Quadrature LFO to make the bowed or pulsing sound.

The pitch voltage is from a synthesizers.com Q960 and Q119 sequencer pair. The Q960 is run into the Q119's ADD INPUT and the Q119 is shifted every 16th division of the Q960 by way of an SSL TTLFO and Moon Modular 554 Octal Divider. The divider also sends sync timings to the 73B delay

A final mix of the outputs of the FS are routed to the studio mixer through a panner and each channel is split off to a Strymon Blue Sky reverb. A final pair of reverbs are the Lexicon MX200 and TC Electronic D-Two.

Recorded in Cubase 6 and video processed by Apple Final Cut Pro."

"A first experiment with MakeNoise Maths and the 5U modular synth.

Patch is basically;

West Coast Random Source (Sputnik) fluctuating random voltages to Maths input 4.
Slewed S&H of the same into the Maths input 1.
Stored random voltages to the Maths input 2.
STG Voltage Mini Store through Q171 quantizer into Maths input 3.
Maths 4 out into channel 1 Both.
Maths 1 out into channel 4 Both.
Maths Sum out into quantizer then Q106 VCO 1v/oct.
Maths EOR to ADSR for filter and vca.
VCO waveforms to Manhattan Analog cp3 mixer.
Mixer to STG Soundlabs Sea Devils filter.
Filter to Strymon Blue Sky then VCA.
Post mix includes Lexicon digital delays and TCE D-Two delay.

Three tracks in Cubase with adjustments to the Maths and octaves of the Q106 VCO."

Heracles Eats A Milky Way

YouTube Published on Jun 25, 2012 by davidryle

"Moon Modular 554 Octal Clock Divider and the Moon 553 Midi To Clock modules. Steinberg's Cubase 6.5 is sending midi clock to the 553. The reset control and 1/96th pulse out to the Suit & Tie Guy Time Buffer is used along with a 1/16th pulse out to the 554 divider. From there various gate and trigger timings throughout the modular synth.

The clock divider is a temperamental beast but does offer some awesome control when in the mood. A delicate flower with a strong aromatic force."

Ehrbody Duzzit

Published on Jul 7, 2013 davidryle·115 videos

"A short clip of a live session in the studio. Endless questionable noodling but fun for me anyway.

All sounds are the modular synth except the keyboard part. The keyboard sound was comprised of a Waldorf MicroWaveXT, MicroQ, FM8 and Hollow Sun's VP330 vst. The keyboard looper was a Korg Kaoss 3 Pad.

The video features a few of Ian Fritz' and Douglas Slocum's (Synthetic Sound Labs) module designs such as the Double Deka Ultrasonic VCO, A Teezer Thru Zero Oscillator and a pair of 5 Pulser wave shapers.

The DDVCO was used as a two channel step sequencer and sync'd to the Q960. The vco's were Q106's and filtered through a Q107 in band pass mode.

The first bass line was the STG Voltage Mini Store sequencer with a pair of Q106's into a Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter. A Trigger Mini Store handled the timing.

The secondary mid-bass line was a pair of vco's (Q106 and SSL1200) through the pair of 5 Pulsers and an Analog XOR. Several LFO's and an SSL 1520 Segwencer IV module permitted various timbral enhancements to the sounds. All the blending was done using a YuSynth Mixer.

The Q960 and Q119 Sequencers and quantizers managed most of the other melodic pitch stuff along with Moon Modular trigger and divider duties. A CGS Master Divider split the long division duties for voices coming and going.

The drone sound is a single Q106 into the Strymon Blue Sky reverb and through an Oakley Deep Equinoxe phaser.

A pair of pulse clicks were a Sputnik WCRS into a Polivoks Filter and the second was the Fritz Teezer vco and a CGS BiNTic filter. The envelopes were all Q109's.

A groaning formant sound was WCRS into a Sputnik VCS, through a FFB and SSL Digital Delay, then a Grove PM Resonator.

A final harmonized sequence was a Q106 to an Oakley Diode Ladder Filter."

Night Horse

davidryle

"Slow melodic ambient piece using 2-Q960's, Q119, 2-STG sequencers, and an Instruo Harmonaig. Oscillators include a Q106, MI Braids, and four STG oscillators. Filters include Sea Devils, Oakley SVF, Q150 and Yusynth Arp 4072. Delays include EchoFix tape delay, Modcan Dual Delay, Behringer DD400, Empress Reverb, TC Electronics D-Two, and 2-Lexicon MX200.

The main looping line from a Q960 into the Harmonaig is steady until midway when I disconnect the gate pulse from a quantizer and insert a random gate source from a Yusynth Random Gate module.

An additional faster sequence from a second Q960 through an STG Switch module is playing a Dove Audio WTF vco and a Q106 through the Q107 bandpass filter. It comes in around midway and fades out again."

A Tincture As Needed

davidryle

"A 5U modular patch with the new STG Soundlabs Oscillators. Using a pair of synthesizers.com Q960 step sequencers and a pair of STG Envelope Generators as well as a Post Lawsuit LPF and Yusynth Arp 4072 filter. Other processors include EchoFix tape delay, Maestro phase shifter, Klark Teknik 3rd Dimension and Hedra pitch shifter. The modulation aspect of the STG VCO's is very useful for detuning right on the front panel. These are very alive sounding and have plenty of character."
