soundscape & improvisation with XTk & MLR

video by junklight

"wasn't really in the mood for patching & programming so just sat down with some trusty tools & made some noises. Really must get around to making some more XTk patches than this small handful I currently have on the go....."

Soundscapes - Microfreak 3 and MLR

video by junklight

"It's been a weekend of experimentation and play on the music front. I upgraded the microfreak to get the superb new Noise Engineering algorithms. As you may have noticed if you watched earlier videos on this channel I really like the NE stuff and these additions to the Microfreak are no exception

For these soundscapes i started with an init patch although for the video I edited the initial 20-30 seconds of getting a starting sound out"

Playing the Cursus Iteritas with MPE

junklight

"The Cursus Iteritas is my kind of oscillator and as soon as I heard a demo I knew I needed one. More often than not though it ends up making percussive sounds. For todays video though I hooked it up to the seaboard via the FH-1 and let it do its thing. The output is routed via the Viol Runia for some extra grit & flavour

Accompaniment is a Christian Henson piano sample and MLR, Morphagene and W/ are adding to the action too. Reverb as ever is Valhalla DSP.

Talking of Christian Henson his recent video is very interesting on the topic of synthetic/natural sounds [below] and goes a long way to explain why I love adding layers of distortion to everything :-)"

Why Are Synths So Difficult To Mix???

Christian Henson Music

"Do you find synths difficult to mix? If so what methods do you employ, a bit of distortion, a spring, a plate?"

disquiet0441 - river stones - MLR with microphones and IPad synth

junklight

"Disquiet Junto Project 0441: Three Stones

This weeks Disquiet Junto is

Step 1: Find three stones from one location.
Step 2: Consider how the stones can be thought to connect (physically, historically, culturally, psychologically) with where they originated, with a sense of region, of place, of terroir.

Now 1 is kind of easy I live at the edge of the English Lake District. Mountains and Sea. I picked up Three River stones on Saturday on our wanderings and was thinking about 2. People tend to think about the Lake District as a natural landscape but of course nothing could be further from the truth. First of all when Stone Age and then Iron Age man arrived here it was covered in trees. Those people set to work in the landscape right away - not just clearing but also working the stone. High in the Langdale valley is a place where green stone axes were made. They seem to have been ceremonial and have been found all over Europe. In Queen Elizabeth the first’s time Copper and Silver were mined here. Slate has been an export for a long time too. As we head towards the coast the abundance of Iron Ore helped the burgeoning ship building trade blossom.

So Industrial Beauty…..

A video and a recording"

"Thanks for listening! Come on a musical voyage with us where we'll send you a new song every day, a cosmic story, and a chance to earn space treasure: https://thegalaxyelectric.lpages.co/5...

Today's trip involves a minimal yet sonically rich pairing; Buchla Music Easel, Vocals,Tape Delay and CV Controllable FX

Come with us as we go on a light cosmic rock hop. We loop our Buchla modular synthesizer using the Monome Grid and MLR.The vocal chain consists of two Boss RE-20s going into a Pigtronix Infinity Looper synced via MIDI clock. We explore many of the various aspects of what the Buchla Music Easel has to offer. It is an endless fount of sound creation and manipulation. The Buchla Music Easel is accompanied by a small Eurorack FX chain including a 4MS Dual Looping Delay, Field Kit with CV Radio, and Mutable Instruments Warps for white noise.

We have NO idea what these performances are going to be. We literally turn on our gear and start sound-checking and before we know it, we have traveled to another planet!

This is the second installment of a series of improvised modular synth performance mixed with pop elements - female vocals and mellotron.
These elements combined with a tempo synchronized looping technique provide a rich sonic landscape of cosmic texture inspired by the early electronic and tape music innovators. This music is especially inspired by Space Age era electronic music or cosmic tape music. The effects are spring reverb, delay and the occasional reversing and pitch shifting of the recorded phrase. Our goal is to combine analog and digital technology to recreate this early electronic music tonal variety in an improvised setting.

meadowrock // sequoia

meadowrock // sequoia from ioflow on Vimeo.

"ambient performance for monome norns + modular synthesizer and rhodes loops.

music on the spot, perched atop a granite outcrop, enfolded by the wondrous natural beauty of a montane meadow. giant sequoias, shadowed ferns, tall pines, and bright sunlight.

four melodies--three from a modular synthesizer and one from a rhodes--were recorded into norns and loaded into mlr, performed on the grid. the melodies and swells are layered, relooped, redirected, scattered into fragments, and recombined in new ways. underneath it all is a field recording: audio from the meadow and surrounding forest.

modular patch notes: instruo cš-l & tòna oscillators running through an instruo tràigh filter; and antumbra knit oscillator in inharmonic string mode. envelopes from instruo cèis and 2hp adsr. the melodies were played live with keystep and squarp hermod as a midi-to-cv converter; captured by ableton live and exported as samples for norns + mlr.

recorded august 14, 2019."

Audulus, Norns MLR, Aparillo, AUM

Published on Jun 7, 2019 junklight

"I've set myself the task of playing a set each day for a few weeks. Recording and videoing each one as part of practicing towards playing live. I know I said I wouldn't share every session but I really liked this segment. I wasn't expecting a lot from tonight - I'm tired after working all week and today has been kind of frustrating work wise (just code debugging nonsense). With not much left in the creative bank I made a patch in Audulus which is kind of stupid - 3 oscillators, random notes, S&H on the filter and a knob that controls the speed of the whole patch. It was interesting enough to start recording with and this is what came out! which I'm kind of pleased with - just goes to show......"

Monome Norns - hedge & the haze

Published on May 31, 2019 Jae Ryan

"I was noodling around with MLR tonight using a sequence I recorded with poly-earthsea on Norns as the mangling material. The whole jam is just that one sample being MLR'd to death. I need to start trying MLR with multiple sources to get the full experience eventually.

A field recording of my street is playing from my phone into Norns but it slowly gets lost in the mix as layers and effects are added. Norns is running through Strymon Volante & then into OTO BAM (as usual)

I also used the UAD studer tape plug-in to get a little distortion/compression for a more lo-fi vibe.

Highly recommend stereo on this one as it really falls apart in mono thanks to copious amounts of extreme effects!"
