Jarre breathes again with Oxygene

"Back in the Seventies, as punk was snarling its way across a world that had not yet gone green, a different sound was heard."

"Now Jarre has returned to his roots, dusted off his aged but robust tools and for the first time embarked on a tour of indoor venues across Europe.

These keyboards and synthesisers look antediluvian but emit warmth and emotion when in the right hands.

'It's not nostalgia, it's not a retro way of thinking. It's just the fact that these instruments - in the history of music - are absolutely unique, like the Stradivarius, or the Les Paul Gibson 58, or whatever," he says.

'Those instruments are very sensual and organic and you can have a very poetic approach to it.

'The difference between noise and music is the hand of the musician.

'It's the reason why I wanted to present Oxygene, which I've never played before in its entirety in a concert, to share this experience in a different venue, with proximity to the audience, to share the experience with the audience in a different context.'"

Click here for the full interview by the BBC.
You can find tour info at the official Oxygene JMJ website. Looks like European dates only. Anyone know if he will be coming to the US?

From 1860 - The First Sample Ever?

"For more than a century, since he captured the spoken words 'Mary had a little lamb' on a sheet of tinfoil, Thomas Edison has been considered the father of recorded sound. But researchers say they have unearthed a recording of the human voice, made by a little-known Frenchman, that predates Edison’s invention of the phonograph by nearly two decades.

The 10-second recording of a singer crooning the folk song “Au Clair de la Lune” was discovered earlier this month in an archive in Paris by a group of American audio historians. It was made, the researchers say, on April 9, 1860, on a phonautograph, a machine designed to record sounds visually, not to play them back. But the phonautograph recording, or phonautogram, was made playable — converted from squiggles on paper to sound — by scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif."

Cloud Generator Expansion module (CGX)

This is an image of the MOTM Cloud Generator Expansion module LCD being tested. Some details on the expansion module:

"* 5 Expansion jacks, comprising:
SAW OUT
TRI OUT
CHAOS CV OUT - user defined DC voltage that is 'mapped' to one particular ChaosEngine element. So it's a wiggley voltage :)
PATCH SEL IN - when a jack is inserted, a negative voltage reduces the current patch # and a positive voltage increases the current patch #. -5V will be mapped to Patch #1, and +5V will be Patch #16 and intermediate voltages mapped accordingly.
AUX CV IN - a user defined CV input that can modulate a CG parameter, ie it has the same effect as 'turning the encoder knob' of that parameter. Mapped to -5V is minimum, +5V maximum, intermediate voltages mapped accordingly. 3U wide module."

Roland MC-202

images via this auction
"This MC-202 has one mod--It has a FINE TEMPO knob, like TR-808 has. It is all working fine with no scratchy pots or sliders. The battery compartment is nice and clean. (see pics). Can run on batteries or 9-12v ac adaptor. It doesn't include the power supply --I will include a set of batteries. A word to the wise -it is much safer to use the TB-303's, 606, MC-202 with batteries as they are kinder to the electronics. If you insist on a power supply get the HFA electronics NZ made Roland replacement for $25 direct from manufacturer. This is a great sequencer/synth which is a kind of half way between a TB-303 and an SH-101. The synth section is basically a SH-101 synth, more than capable of 303-style blips and squelches, plus much more. The sequencer is actually quite powerful for what it is and not difficult to use. It has two channels, so can control a 2nd synth via CV, and importantly has controls for portamento and accent, essential if you're trying to make it sound like a 303. Syncs to TR606/626/707/808/909/303 via Roland DIN sync, or get yourself a MIDI-DIN sync converter and sync it to your "modern" equipment.

Jomox XBase888 with Eventide TimeFactor Delay

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"This is an awesome sounding delay pedal! You can hear the dry signal of the Jomox XBase888 in the first section. It's great having it synced. The TimeFactor's display shows you the delay time in note values or milliseconds.

The TimeFactor is actually two delays in one. It has a mix knob, second from the top-left, that allows you to transition between two different delay times, The first delay in this demo is the "Band Delay", the second is "Reverse" and the third is a "Mod Delay". You can hear at the end how it will actually transition smoothly from one delay time to another, giving you some interesting effects. This super delay pedal also does amazing tape and analog emulations as well as a looper. Nice. bigcitymusic.com"

Centrifuge - Yamaha CS40M Track

via chromium on this VSE post.

Centrifuge (mp3)

"I used a ribbon controller on this track to modulate the CS's filter cutoff as I played. That's what was creating the swells throughout the song, and those rhythmic effects in the bridge.

For those interested, the bass is my Alembic Distillate for both for the bassline and the distorted melody doubling (thru an EHX tube overdrive unit). I used a Fender Strat thru a mic'd (SM-57) Champion 300 amp for the solo. Everything was recorded thru an Alembic F2-B tube preamp, and I used a Moog MF-104z for the delay effects. My audio workstation is pretty modest - consisting of an M-Audio 1814 adapter, and an older version of Cubase SX.

Thanks for listening - all feedback is welcome! I'm kinda new to this recording stuff, but I have a few other tracks up on Myspace and my homepage as well -

The New Cynthia ZOe

The latest Cynthia gadget is the new ZOe ... a Buchla modular format Zeroscillator!

Shown is the second front panel prototype with temporary LEDs and engraved graphics. They're still playing around with the choice of knobs while waiting for a large order of finished circuit boards to arrive.

The actual $1,500 production models will feature the familiar blue silk screened panel graphics and fit seamlessly into your Buchla modular both physically and electronically.

There are no digital connections to the ZOe as it is 100 percent all-analog, liquid-smooth, through-zero goodness - and designed to be a great compliment to any Buchla system.

This is a special limited run in this format.
They are shooting for mid May delivery, and now accepting orders. Please contact Cynthia directly through her website for ordering info!

"The EGG plugs into any stereo Amplifier to create soothing flowing environmental sound textures - and through headphones it's incredible. The chords and notes EXIST in your mind, they pan and swell and phase their way through your psyche in unpredictable patterns, never repeating.

The combination of LSI organ technology with synthesizer type processing and digital randomizing/control elements make the EGG an altogether intriguing package from either technological or metaphysical viewpoints."

Sound Quest MIDI Quest

This is one of those I'm surprised I haven't posted this yet posts. Someone wrote in on the Xpander email list asking for a software editor for his Xpander. Someone else pointed him to Sound Quest's Midi Quest. Midi quest is an editor/librarian for a number of hardware synths, new and old. You can see the full list of supported instruments here. You can click any instrument listed and you will see the details and some screenshots for it's editor. Pictured here is one of the screens for the Xpander.

I'm curious how MIDI Quest performs. Years back I used to use Emagic's Sound Diver. For the most part it was ok, but at times it was a little clunky and had issues with my hardware synths. If you use MIDI Quest, I'd love to hear what you think of it. Right now I use MIDI OX to save patches and the thought of a full boar editor/librarian is appealing.

Nearest launching of the Synthesizer - Acxel II

Press Release
Quebec, Canada - on March 26, 2008: Idarca-audio division of Idarca Inc. is proud to announce the nearest launching of the synthesizer Acxel II - which makes profitable the original Acxel legacy (early 90's) and of a revolutionary dynamic architecture parallel processor - patented by Idarca - the RPP. With its unique characteristics, Acxel II will set new standard of real time synthesis and audio processing.

Acxel II proposes 3 synthesis modes (with integrated sound processing):
Acxelink made up of cells (256 to 1280) independently parametrical: Amplitude, Frequency, Phase, Filter, Waveform. Cells-cells links, signal Inputs integration and processing and many other characteristics including macros.
Additive synthesis
Analog synthesis

Acxel II integrates unique functions on sound resynthesis and processing with full scalability:
Real TIme Resynthesis:
The Acxelink and Additive modes allocate without compromise a complete access in real time to all elements (Envelope, Midi, Modulation) of a timbre, created from scratch or configured with Analysis (integrated into the system).

Open architecture: Acxel II allows, in real time, to introduce external sounds (for example a guitar) into the synthesis elements, for simple effects or extended processes or sound fusions.

Scalable: The Acxelink mode integrates all of the elements to emulate and combine existing or original synthesis modes: Physical modeling, Wave Tables, FM, Wavelets, Vocoder, etc.

Acxel II will be available in 2 versions:
Acxel II - PCI: Sound Card (PCI) with software PC/MAC
- Deliverable in 4 to 6 months.

Acxel II - SAS: Stand Alone System with “preset” use for scenic performances or in Workstation (with PC or MAC)
- Deliverable in 8 to 12 months.

Touch Sensitive Graphic console available in option
- Deliverable in less than 12 months.
