Algorithmic Composition In Pure Data
YouTube via dapoulter — May 03, 2010 — "This is a patch I made in Pure Data for my second year university project to explore computer aided composition. It works using live looping. Play into the patch with a midi controller to build up a basic song/tune/beat/vibe, which is then used to populate a first order markov chain, so that you are able to switch between what you played into the patch and the markov generated sequence.

A syncing theme
YouTube via attorks — May 05, 2010 — "Today, on the 5th of May, the 65th Liberation Day is celebrated in Holland. And I came up with this improvisation after some fiddling around. Did several takes because the lighting was horrible and could not get the picture sharp in order to read the text on the modules. Still not satisfied but it is as good as it gets with the current webcam. The Doepfer MAQ16/3 is playing two 8 step sequences. One driving the self built Modular and one driving the Ian Fritz Through Zero VCO, 5Pulser and All-in EG modules together with the Resonant LoPass Gate. The TZ VCO is synced by a VCO from the self built Modular. Turning the sync depth knob on the TZ VCO I can sort of alternate between the sequences. I have to find out if the sync depth knob is wired correctly because it seems it behaves to wrong way around."

Niio Iotine Core - Analog Filter / Processor
via this auction
"The IOTINE CORE is an analog powerhouse. The IC features 3 separate processing layers that each includes a Filter, VCA, and a selection of Saturation circuits. Both channels feature a smooth 12db VCF, ideal for audio filtering and reminiscent of 12db synth filters but with very low noise and full frequency range.The dual channel SAT selection with variable DRIVE offers rich texture and intensity circuits designed to alter sound density through analog distortion and waveshaping techniques. Dynamic movement of frequency and amplitude of the layers is a base design feature of the IC. The movement is derived from envelopes that are triggered by the input, resulting in organic and flexible modulation that conforms to the sound and creates a living animation that pulls out or pushes down elements of the sound. Further processing can be applied by separating the layers on output from the IC, allowing external mixing and effecting options that expand the unit into an incredibly flexible processing system.
Features:
ENV x2
* H-AR envelope with full HOLD/ATTACK/RELEASE/THRESHOLD controls with triggering from either INPUT or VCF.
* EXT TRIG allows triggering from a separate audio or voltage control source
FILTER x2
* 12db VCF for shaping the sound pre-SAT. Normal and inverse mod from the ENV and direct mod via 1/8” jack allows frequency animation that can be triggered by or follow either input signal.
* Features variable Q saturation in conjunction with the "IN" control
* Full range Filter MOD from envelope in both normal and inverse polarity
* XT MOD from audio or voltage control source
SAT x2
* 6 SAT circuits with variable drive create texture and density, and with the dual channel layout multiple saturation options exist with the ability to filter and ampmod around the selected SAT circuit
VCA x2
* Functions as an Expander/gate or compressor
POST
* AUDIO routing from INPUT1/SAT1/SAT2
* FILTER with LP/BP/HP and open Q
* OCTAVE AND DIVISION circuits
* VCA with Normal and Inverse MOD from ENV 1/2 or direct waveform MOD from SAT 1/2
IN / OUT
* Balanced/Unbalanced 1/4"
* 2-In 3-out + mix out"

ems vcs3 with MIDI
via this auction
"this is a mk ii vsc3 but with silver top knobs that is because its probably an early mkii. it works fine but it could use a cleaning because some pots are scratchy,but this is normal for an old synth. it has a midi kit installed which is nicely done and a modification on the osc for modulation. it came with original cover and the black joystic top is extra. it has an original mkii joystic which is the same as aks joystic and i put this plastic top which makes the joystick easier to use. but you can take it of or leave it it just fits. its not stuck on the joystick. when i bought this vcs3 i was told it was pete namlooks but i dont have any proof . thats for the new owner to find out."

Novation XioSynth 25 Synthesizer Audio Interface
via this auction
"Novation XioSynth 2-octave Synthesizer and Audio USB MIDI Controller Keyboard
Never synthesis been so accessible! In this stylish, compact and highly affordable format, the Novation XioSynth offers a staggering amount of classic and cutting edge sounds, many from internationally acclaimed artists, along with a brand new X-Gator patch programmer and optional filter distortion. Furthermore, the XioSynth provides everything required for producing on the move, through its audio interfacing and MIDI controlling capabilities.
Novation-Class Synthesizer With New Features
The XioSynth features a mono-timbral Novation synth engine with 8-voice polyphony. In addition to 3 oscillators (17 waveforms each), 1 Filter (varying types), 2 LFOs (32 waveforms each), an arpeggiator and multi-effects board, this subtractive synth also boasts some brand new facilities such as the X-Gator patch programmer. The X-Gator can be made to gate each patch to create unique 16-32 step rhythmic patterns for every onboard sound, all automatically synchronised to MIDI clock from a sequencer; just press and hold one key to groove along to a track with style.
Novation Sound Old and New - High Profile User Patches
The XioSynth features 200 hard-hitting onboard patches, utilising a new optional filter distortion to produce an even greater range of sounds than on previous synths; from the distinctive clean British sound to the filthiest and grittiest of sonic characters. Furthermore, 60 of the onboard sounds come from internationally acclaimed artists and producers from a variety of musical genres, namely James Zabiela, Ferry Corsten, Rennie Pilgrem, Roots Manuva, Shimon and Skeewiff. As such, every one of the patches on the XioSynth is eminently and instantly usable for creating synthesized music of any kind.
High Quality Audio Interface
The XioSynth includes an ultra-low latency 2 In/2 Out audio interface for high quality recording and playback. This allows you to record a microphone with phantom power, as well as simultaneously stream the onboard synth audio directly to the sequencer via the USB cable. Equally though, a guitar can be plugged straight into the Jack input for DI recording, as well as simultaneously mic'd, and recorded with outstanding results. Check the demo XioSynth guitar track in the Novation online player to be blown away by the quality.
Flexible Midi Controller - Of Software Or Hardware
If wanting a compact controller keyboard for studio or live use, the XioSynth is the most flexible and powerful tool on the market. In addition to synthesizing and audio/MIDI interfacing, the keyboard is also a comprehensive control surface with 22 knobs and buttons (doubled to 44 by a Group A/B switch), plus a freely assignable Touchpad and joystick. All of these controls are pre-programmed in 12 of 16 onboard Templates, so that the XioSynth can instantly control many software applications straight out the box. Add to this many more Templates online, a free Template Editor software application and hybrid modes for simultaneous synthesizing and MIDI controlling, and you have an extremely versatile package for producing or performing.
Highly Portable
Simply connecting the keyboard over USB is all that's required to start recording, synthesizing and MIDI controlling. As the device is class compliant, no drivers are required for Windows XP or Mac OSX (although some are provided to improve latency and stability in some apps). Furthermore, if wanting to excape the confines of the studio for a while, the USB cable can be unplugged and the XioSynth can be powered by batteries, functioning as a standalone synth completely separately from the computer.

Bob Moog Foundation Unites with Asheville Brewing Company to Launch 'Moog Filtered Ale'
Proceeds of Limited Edition Brew to Benefit Foundation
May 5, 2010 – Asheville Brewing Company and the Bob Moog Foundation are proud to announce the launch of the limited edition Moog Filtered Ale, a pale beer named in honor of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog. The Ale will be available beginning May 27, 2010 at the Foundation's fundraising event, Moogus Operandi, featuring synthesizer wizard Erik Norlander. All profits from the sale of the beer will be donated to the Bob Moog Foundation to benefit their projects. The timing of the launch of the beer coincides with the inventor's May 23 birthday.
Moog Filtered Ale will be be distributed nationally and internationally in 22-ounce bottles through Asheville's Bruisin' Ales and will be available on tap in various locations throughout Western North Carolina. The beer will be sold from May 27 through July 31, after which it will no longer be available.
"Moog Filtered Ale is an American-style pale ale with distinctive notes of caramel and pine. It's a very accessible beer that reflects the Moog legacy. I've been a fan of Bob Moog since college, and I am excited to present a beer in honor of an American pioneer,” says Doug Riley, brewer and part owner of the Asheville Brewing Company.
Asheville Brewing has been making outstanding craft beers since 1998 and has won several awards for its beers. As an active supporter of local non-profit groups they are thrilled to be working with the Bob Moog Foundation, whose work is innovative and historical. Through Moog Filtered Ale, Asheville Brewing aims to support the interactive educational programs that the Foundation is developing to teach science through music as well as the eventual creation of a Moogseum.
Asheville Pizza Company President Mike Rangel says, “We are thrilled to be working with the Bob Moog Foundation to help keep Bob's vision and legacy alive. By donating the profits from Moog Filtered Ale, we will be supporting innovative science education through the Foundation's MoogLab outreach project. We are proud to be joining some of the larger beer companies in supporting important educational work in our community. Moog Filtered Ale is absolutely the most exciting project our company has been involved in."
"Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation, comments, 'Creating Moog Filtered Ale with the Asheville Brewing Company has been a rewarding project. We are very grateful to Mike Rangel and Doug Riley for their support of our innovative projects, which will benefit Western North Carolina and beyond. The unique partnership between the Asheville Brewing Company and the Bob Moog Foundation marks a true match of venture philanthropy and creative fundraising in a economically precarious environment. The proceeds from this project will assist us in continuing our important work.'
The label for the Ale was designed by Asheville artist Phil Cheney. The label, an original graphic in vibrant shades of purple, green, and orange, shows Bob Moog leaning over a keyboard with musical notes, synthesizer knobs, and patch cables floating from his head. The number “76” graces the upper right-hand corner of the label, commemorating Bob Moog's 76th birthday which falls on May 23.
A launch party for Moog Filtered Ale will be held on May 27, 2010, at the Orange Peel in Asheville. The event, Moogus Operandi, will feature virtuoso synthesist Erik Norlander and his massive custom modular synthesizer, affectionately called “the Wall of Doom.” An auction of Moog-inspired art will be held on eBay a week prior to the event and will conclude the night of the event.
Tickets to the event are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and can be purchased through the Orange Peel.
The Ale will be sold exclusively by Greenlife Grocery, the Orange Peel, and Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company from May 27 through May 30. Beginning May 31, Moog Filtered Ale will be available for international retail distribution in bottles exclusively through Bruisin' Ales. It will be available on tap throughout western North Carolina."
Note on the two images in this post: I decided to post both as the top made me reflect on how the label might look printed on the bottle, while the bottom was more clear for digital print.

2x Seiko DS-250 with DS-310
flickr by joelbrave
"Two Seiko DS-250 digital synths"
Update via onephatcat in the comments: "A couple of comments on my photo:
When connecting two DS-250's via MIDI, you can control the Vibrato depth/speed, sustain length (for both sound 1 and 2 in Dual mode) , detune, ocatave and chorus on/off/depth controls of the second DS-250 from the first one. The second DS-250 came with a Seiko expression pedal (useful as The Seiko's don't seem to respond to Midi volume control) and some kind of sound cartridge, which was attached to the back with a special bracket (removed so I could attach the DS-310 synth module). looking for additional Seiko paraphernalia, manuals, hardware, catalogs, advertisements, hit me up if you have any or even photographs."
Google Chrome Speed Tests
YouTube via googlechrome — May 03, 2010 — Yamaha SHS-10 at 3:00 on.
"These speed tests were filmed at actual web page rendering times. If you're interested in the technical details, read on!
Equipment used:
- Computer: MacBook Pro laptop with Windows installed
- Monitor - 24" Asus: We had to replace the standard fluorescent backlight with very large tungsten fixtures to funnel in more light to capture the screen. In addition, we flipped the monitor 180 degrees to eliminate a shadow from the driver board and set the system preferences on the computer to rotate 180 degrees. No special software was used in this process.
- 15Mbps Internet connection.
- Camera: Phantom v640 High Speed Camera at 1920 x 1080, films up to 2700 fps
"Why does allrecipes.com in the potato gun sequence appear at once, and not the text first and images second? And why does it appear to render from bottom of the screen to the top?"
Chrome sends the rendered page to the video card buffer all at once, which is why allrecipes.com appears at once, and not with the text first and images second. Chrome actually paints the page from top to bottom, but to eliminate a shadow from the driver board, we had to flip the monitor upside down and set the system preferences in Windows to rotate everything 180 degrees, resulting in the page appearing to render from bottom to top.
"Why does the top one third of the page appear first on the weather.com page load?"
Sometimes only half the buffer gets filled before the video card sends its buffer over to the LCD panel. This is because Chrome on Windows uses GDI to draw, which does not do v-sync.
"The screen wipes are so smooth - how was that achieved?"
The screen wipes up in a gradated wipe because LCD pixels take around 10ms to flip and gradually change color.
