Occasionally one reads about some musical instrument with an illustrious past, Jimi Hendrix's guitar, John Lennon's piano, selling for exorbitant amounts of money at auction. And typically, that's the last of it, the instrument disappearing into some rich collector's display case, never to be heard from again. Here then, is a bit of a different story. In April 2006, a Yamaha CS5 monosynth, having been owned by Richard D James (Aphex Twin), with the actual liner notes for his landmark "Selected Ambient Works Volume II" etched into the bottom, was sold at VEMIA auction for approximately $1200 - a bargain in retrospect. The winning bidder was, in fact, a friend of Solvent's, and the synth resides not in a display case, but in Solvent's studio, on generous long-term loan.
"RDJCS5", a new 4-track 12-inch / digital EP by Solvent, is the result. This is Suction022. Each and every sound on this record came from RDJ's old CS5, painstakingly programmed and multi-tracked by Solvent over the course of several months. The limited capabilities and sound palette of this humble little synth provided quite a challenge, but ultimately the results are not merely an exercise in technical synthnerdery; "RDJCS5" speaks more of Solvent's musical kinship to thee Analord. Opening track "Curtains" bears similarity to early Rephlex signing Bochum Welt, while "Radiator", "Mould", and "Tassels" each contain hallmarks of the classic AFX sound. At the same time, each track also sounds distinctly and unmistakably 'Solvent'.
The 12" vinyl edition is limited to 300 copies, in brown chipboard sleeve with sticker, and also contains an additional noise/drone piece at the end of side B. Entitled "Sandpaper", this cut will be individually hand-etched by Solvent, for a 1-of-a-kind cut/click/loop experience.

A Word of Warning When DIYing from The Analog Lab
via The Analog Lab which is running a course on synth repair (see this post)."Harlan (your favorite webmaster) plugged in the MS-20 and placed his hand on the chassis to steady said unit while plugging in a 1/4″ cable.
Unbeknownst to Harlan, someone had done a very peculiar mod on this lovely little synth… THE POWER TRANSFORMER HAD BEEN REMOVED. So, this means that there was no step-down transformer to turn the 110V from the wall into a more comfortable +/- 15V and the ground wire (which was grounded to the chassis, mind you) was soldered right into the AC.What does that mean? It means Harlan had 110V shot directly into his hand."

Marc Doty, aka AutomaticGainsay, who's videos are frequently featured here, has joined The Bob Moog Foundation for the summer. He'll be posting once a week during his stay. His first post is on something quite amazing. What you are looking at is Bob Moog's actual personal notebook from 1967 - 1969.
"It focused on the period between 1967 and 1969, and featured clients with names like 'Siday,' 'Margouleff,' 'Beaver,' 'Zappa,' and 'Carlos.' If you recognize those names and know what happened in that time period, you realize what an incredibly interesting and important document this notebook is. If you don’t recognize those names, they are a few of the artists who brought the synthesizer to the attention of the world… and by doing so, changed it."

"Our buddy Gerald played around with two FT201's (our Analog Filter / 10 Step Sequencer) and crappy but lovely old Moog Satellite synth. A little insight in the general sound, IR motion controller, filter and sequencer functions.

The FT201 Analog Filter / 10-Step Sequencer is our innovative voltage controlled vactrol state variable filter combined with a 10 step sequencer. The FT201 is capable of providing ultra low and high frequency filter effects which are controllable with the on board infrared expression controller, which allows the user to create filter sweeps by moving their feet or hands over the pedal. The FT201 has 3 different filter outputs: bandpass, low pass and high pass, which all work simultaneously. The cutoff frequency range is very large, between 20 Hz and 20 kHz and because of the vactrols used the sound quality is superb. The 10 Step Sequencer runs through the selected amount of steps (2 -- 10 steps) and adds the control voltage to the value set by the Cutoff knob, thus modulating the cutoff frequency in every step.
Just like the BD101, the FT201 can be used as a stand alone pedal, linked to other KOMA Elektronik effect pedals or as a controller for a (modular) synthesizer or other CV receptive electronic instruments. The CV and audio patch bay allows control of the Resonance, Sequencer Reset, Cutoff and gives the user the possibility to synchronize the pedal with an external clock signal."

It works perfectly, sounds amazing and features a set of original tapes. The Chamberlin is the, better and more advanced, predecessor to the Mellotron which has better sounding recorded samples resulting in a better, more dynamic, instrument. Due to the original premium purchase price, the Chamberlin M-1 was produced in very limited quantities (around 150-200), and they have since become one of the rarest and most coveted vintage keyboards.
