RARE MAM MB 33 Roland TB-303 clone

via this auction

"The MB 33 is a rare vintage rack-mounted Roland TB-303 clone released in the mid-nineties by German synth maker MAM (Music And More).

It is a true analog monophonic bass synthesizer with MIDI implementation so you can create 303-like bass lines from your sequencer. A single VCO offers the same two basic waveforms as the TB-303: a sawtooth and square wave.

!! But in the MB 33 they can be mixed together for a more interesting tone than the 303 could originally produce !!

Additional knobs control the VCO tuning, filter frequency cutoff, resonance, envelope mod amount, envelope decay time and accent intensity - the same controls found on the TB-303! The 24dB lowpass filter can also produce the characteristic sound of the 18 dB filter used in the original 303. There's also an auto-slide function (4 octave range) for producing those 303-style slides and a separate input for filtering external signals through it."

Korg Lambda ES-50 Ensemble Synth

via this auction

" The Lambda has 48 note polyphony and the Ensemble section runs off of 3 high frequency analogue VCOs(Percussion sections runs off 2 VCOs) that can all be detuned to achieve excellent lush layered string sounds. This board does not have a lot of patches by design(Brass,Organ, Chorus, Strings I, Strings II, Piano, Electric Piano, Clavi, &Harmonics) but what it does(STRINGS!!!), it does extremely well. The piano patches from the Percussive sides are a bit bland, but Clavs are OK, and the Harmonics preset from the Percussive section is excellent and layered with the String , Organ, Brass, and Chorus presets of the Ensemble section, sound phenominal, especially if you set a bit of delayed release.

The Chorus Phase setting for each section is particularly cool in building the layered sounds into your mix via pulse waves .This board can layer any combination of these voices up to 9 to create some exceptionally thick sounds. For the time period, this was one of the top three sounding string machines available. I have also owned an ARP Solina and side by side, the Korg's strings are as lush and wide if not wider(especially when you detune Osc 2&3) The ES 50 has a unique sound and is very analogue(and loud!!!). What makes this vintage string machine stand out from the others like the Solina and Omni is that each key triggers 2 separate VCAs(thats 96 envelopes and VCAs in total!) .The ensemble section also has an adjustable attack ,release,& vibrato control. The percussive section has an adjustable delay, a sustain setting , and a tremolo whose speed can be controlled. This keyboard also has an octave transpose up setting and separate volume controls for the percussive and ensemble sections which have separate audio outputs for real stereo effect- not too common on 1970s analogue equipment. The best feature I have enjoyed is the two Chorus buttons above the pitch bender(one for the Ensemble section, the other for the Percussive section) that when activated, send your layered sounds through separate BBD(bucket brigade) analogue delays that really augment the fullness of all the layers sounds. Also has a brass cutoff for it's low pass filter and a Gate Trigger out. And its big wooden backside is useful for holding all your effects pedals or stacking other synths, but at 33 lbs, it is still very portable for gigs..."

Live Improv Sound Design and BeatFlipping Demo 01

YouTube Uploaded by SyndicateSynthetique on Feb 9, 2012

Rhythm starts at 1:20.

"My name is James Jaret Kojac / Syndicate Synthetique. I'm a Sound Designer and one of my latest projects has been working with DSI on the Tempest Drum Machine.

This video is primarily a showcase of what my friends and I have been calling "beat flipping" on the DSI "Tempest". Beat Flipping is essentially an exercise in live improvisation to see how far one can take the same 4bar pattern on one device.

All Patches/Sounds and patterns are all designed from zero'd out custom patch initializations and designed by myself for DSI and/or Myself.

This video is 100% Live Tempest. It was recorded into an MBox2 into Reaper at 48/24 .wav with no pre- or post-processing except normalization.

In this video I demonstrate use of polyphonic synthesis, reverse, beat roll, pad pressure modulation routing and obviously a bunch more. As time goes on and I add them, the timed comments should go over a few things as I do them.

Enjoy! More to come...

"Moog Music Inc. is proud to present Dr. Joseph Akins' five part series on the fundamentals of synthesizer programming. Dr. Akins is an associate professor at Middle Tennessee State University and strives to teach his students a complete understanding of synthesizers and computers as tools for modern music production. In this five part series Dr. Akins uses a Voyager to teach the process through which a synthesizer's sound is generated and the techniques needed to program your own sounds and sonic experiments. In part two of this five part series Dr. Akins goes over operation of a synthesizer's two main sound sources the oscillators and the noise generator."

Padshop - VST Granular Synthesizer

YouTube Uploaded by SteinbergSoftware on Feb 10, 2012

"Coming straight from the Steinberg sound lab, Padshop is a state-of-the-art granular synthesizer that provides out-of-this-world atmospheres and far-out effects — and a user interface that's a breeze to work with.

Granular synthesis is one of the most fascinating fields of experimental sound design, but the conversions for programming sounds based on granular synthesis algorithms have always been too complex for every-day sound design or too shallow for serious in-depth sound manipulation.

With Padshop, Steinberg offers a granular synthesizer that raises the standard in terms of handling, flexibility, musicality and sound.

Top features:
• Advanced granular synthesis engine with 2 independent layers and individual oscillator, edit and FX sections
• Up to 8 grain streams per oscillator for impressively rich and spacious structures
• Intuitive user interface for effective usability and direct accessibility
• More than 400 presets dedicated to atmospheric pads and evolving textures
• SoftGrain Wave ROM with hundreds of sounds for custom presets

The Padshop VST Granular Synthesizer will soon be available as a download product from the Steinberg Online Shop. So, fasten your safety strap and get ready to expand your universe with this high-class virtual synth.
