Steve Turnidge of the MMTA & Synthwerks on the Rise of Modular Synths

via Steve Turnidge on Facebook:

"Here is a response I wrote in the Mostly Modular Trade Association forum regarding why Modular Synthesizers may not be a niche market for long:

My vision is that Modular Synthesizers are the new Records. When we were kids, we distinguished ourselves from our peers by our record collections (at least my peer group did). The driving factor behind this is kids spending their parents money on materials designed to drive said parents batty.

The advent of Napster removed the record collection glamour - You have all Frank Zappa? Ok, now I do too...

I think the next stop on that story was videogames - until the decks and games became ubiquitous.

Now, I'm happy to believe, we are at the dawning of the age of moduars. It meets the requirements of a reasonable beginning investment, repeat but differentiated sales, and it drives parents crazy. Mix and match - when you go to a friends house with a new module, oh what noise you can make...

The MMTA is founded on the idea that this aggregated output from a community of hermits can find a marketplace in disaffected (and effected) youth - who grow up to be the equivalent of computer geeks.

An additional benefit is the subliminal educational affect modular has on impressionable minds. By making a patch, you are learning signal flow and what works (which is a broad variable) together. Harness SoundCloud and YouTube, and you have the bragging content distribution outlet. No need to monetize the content (even though we have something in the wings for that) when you are monetizing the hardware. Although 'software eats everything' - modulars have already been eaten, digested, and excreted quite a while ago. We are at the time for the pendulum to swing from aggregated software toward dis-aggregated hardware, and I'm excited to be here now...

Steve is also part of Synthwerks and he recently published Desktop Mastering currently available on Amazon.

Why You Should Consider Getting a Modular - "I'll try to keep this short: a modular doesn't have to be a full blown synth. It doesn't have to be a synth at all. It can be an extension to your existing setup; it can be a simple way to process your synths, guitar, drums, etc."

Grant Richter on Cutting Down Modular Costs - ""If the public could change their perception of how a synthesizer module must be constructed, we could have a renaisance unlike anything in the past."

Armon Gracia Remi Analog Combo Organ with Rythm Section

via Dennis Matana on Facebook

"Pretty rare 70's combo organ...totally analog including the drums...also has bass accompaniment, this only works with the drums on aqnd on the lower octave...."

And some additional info via the image description Google translated from Dutch: "There are 5 sounds, Flute, Oboe, Trombone, Accordion, Violin, which also can be combined and there is a vibrato on .... this is the switch that I'm in when I posted ..... got him he missed the Accordion switch, when I switch the vibrato on the site of the Accordion placed switch. He also misses vd drum section 5 press buttons but they are obviously still using ......

The drum unit is really the bomb .... lovely and also analogous to mod .... just sit on the board of 6 little trimmer that includes the decay of the BD, Tom and RS change .... also, the various presets combined for really funky rhythms .....

Audio comes in at 1:18 so turn up your volume too loud.

"Buchla and Associates just released a new firmware for the preset manager in the 206e and the 225e. It allows for voltage control of what preset to go to which means you can sequence the presets in just about any way imaginable. I've been waiting for this sooo much! So here's a quick video demo of how it works. The implications of what this can do is just pure awesome!"

Circular Keyboard Finish - organfairy's Jarre-like Circular Keyboard Controller

YouTube Published on Jun 11, 2012 by organfairy

"A while ago I converted some old christmas decoration into a circular keyboard. Now it's the time to finish it and get some light in the keys.
It didn't turn out as impressive as Jean Michel Jarre's circular monstrosity [see this post and this post]. But I still think it came out pretty well.

Unfortunately it doesn't work very well when it comes to generating control voltages because the input impedance of the operational amplifier in the sample-and-hold circuit is too low. But if I change the bipolar LM324 to a JFET based opamp then it should be fine. I just need to get some.

The music is something I made back in 2001 on Yamaha HE-8 organ and Roland JX-8P synthesizer."

Dual LFO & ASR synth module Demo

YouTube Published on Jun 10, 2012 by davidryle

"Cat Girl Synth CGS58 Utility LFO and two CGS34 Analog Shift Registers in one module. The addition of Loop and Series switching on the dual ASR's was a fun logic exercise.
At the time of video posting, the module still has a few bugs. One of the registers is glitchy and produces a short voltage burst occasionally. The Looping function layers the last voltage onto the next sample causing a linear rise in cv pitch, which is probably a switch logic problem. Otherwise the module works pretty well.
The series switch sets up a six register round. The channel A LFO pulse is forced to the channel B side for this keeping everything timed. The Loop function also works with/without the Series and was a major hurdle to make work together - logic wise.
I added the Hi/Lo speed caps to get the range broader on the LFO. I also added a mute switch for each register stage on the ASR's.
A fun project but a time consuming and challenging build for my level. The module is 3 spaces wide in 5U MOTM format. The depth behind the panel is 3.5 inches (89mm). Pretty tight.
This thing is a vco eater. I used eight vco's in this demo. Two for the LFO and six for the ASR's.
Thanks for watching and commenting."
