Microgranny and Frau Angelico

Published on Oct 16, 2014 ISOTROPOSPHERE

"Bastl Instruments (formally Standuino) Microgranny v1.0 and the Frau Angelico drum instrument.

First a super THANK YOU shout out to Felix of Tuesday Night Machines for sending me the Frau Angelico (appropriately from Germany) for some weird candy. Awesome, dude.

Thinking the Frau was going to be problematic I was all set to receive it on the work bench for diagnosis, seems to be fully functional for me. I then changed the knobs and did a little decorative painting to make it mine. Pretty sweet little device and it is quick to get some beats going straight away.

The Microgranny is playing a loop within a sample and slowed way down for a drone. Love this thing.

Headphones recommended as the bass is deep on the Frau.
Thanks again Felix, you are awesome.

Enjoy!!!!"

A Lovely Gray Face - Soundsdivine The2600 Demo

"I've never owned or even played the venerable Arp 2600, though I've pined for one for a long time. The chances that I will own one are pretty small, so I was thrilled with this sampled version, which includes an excellent effects section. The2600 is truly a joy to get lost in; it sounds rich, powerful and yet playful."

All sounds from The2600 but the drums.

"This is an original GENMDM from Littlescale. If you are looking at this, you probably know what it is. It allows midi control through USB to control the sound chip in a Sega Genesis.

http://little-scale.com/

WHAT IS IT?___
GenMDM is a music interface for your SEGA Genesis or Mega Drive console.

Use GenMDM to write sweet chiptunes using your favourite MIDI / audio sequencing software. GenMDM will appear as a MIDI output device on your Windows, Mac or Linux-based computer. GenMDM will respond to MIDI notes and MIDI CC data, and will give you a high degree of real time control over the sound chips inside of the SEGA console.

All voices and sound functions of the standard SEGA FM and PSG sound chips can be controlled via MIDI. There is a small FAQ in this thread on chipmusic.org. You might be interested in reading it."

Bob Moog Foundation Announces Raffle for Williamsville-era (built on 7/28/73) Minimoog SN 3479

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"What: The Bob Moog Foundation 2014 Minimoog Raffle

When: October 16, 2014-November 25, 2014

How much: Tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100; all proceeds benefit our projects

A musical and technological revolution occurred in 1970 when R.A. Moog Inc. introduced its compact, simplified, and portable keyboard synthesizer: the Minimoog® . This musical instrument was the perfect intersection of convenience, effective interface, useful functionality, great sound, and Bob Moog’s legacy.

Thanks to the efforts of Bill Hemsath, Jim Scott, Chad Hunt, and Bob Moog, arguably the most iconic synthesizer of all time was created and introduced to the world. Used, embraced, and lauded by musicians for 44 years, the Minimoog holds a permanent place in history as one of the most loved and best sounding synthesizers ever created.

Because of this history, and how Bob’s inspiration and design is woven through it, the Bob Moog Foundation has chosen the Minimoog as the focus of its raffle again this year."

Teisco Synthesizer 60F

"What a beautiful sounding synth! The Teisco 60F is the little brother of the 110F. A simple one oscillator machine, but with a rich phat sound. And with one of the most beautiful PWM i've ever heard. Sometimes it reminds me of the Yamaha CS 50 / 80.
Beside the piano ( K2000 custom samples + AMS Neve RMX 16 Reverb ) and the wide delay/reverb guitar, all sounds are made with the Teisco synth. As usual a multitrack recording with fx."

He is correct, the Nord Lead 3 codebase was written from the ground up and is different the the original Nord Lead & Nord Lead 2. I believe Clavia went back to the original Nord Lead character in synths after the NL3 & G2.

"A stunning, and rare, Italian-made Crumar Stratus analogue synth from the early 1980s in full working order.

We are not keyboard players, but we have managed to rope in a friend, who does play in a band, to test it. He managed to get some pretty awesome sounds out of it and he immediately knew how to set it up for various voices (it’s nice to see a professional at work).

When we first saw this, we thought it must be a modern reproduction due to the excellent dust-free condition, until we looked closer and realised it was original and in pristine condition. From the condition, it is perfectly obvious that this has not been gigged and was presumably somebody’s personal toy until it was put away into storage.

We are aware that it has been kept in a loft for many, many, years in its original carry case, and as a result it is virtually dust-free, and the keys are bright white, and the knobs clean. All of the buttons and sliders are present. All of the potentiometers are scratch free (we didn’t have to squirt switch lubricant into any of them - they were all working like new!).

It also comes with three original overlays for the top control board to indicate six different settings for different voices and we guess that you will never see these on another one of these machines."

1971 MUSONICS MINIMOOG MODEL D SN 1204

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Soundgas are pleased to offer for sale this stunning early Minimoog Model D in excellent cosmetic condition and perfect working order.

It's in a finely-crafted Claro Walnut case, (the original case was beyond repair) and has been extensively overhauled by a respected synth tech in the USA. It's just been checked over and tuned/calibrated by James Walker at Synth Repair Services.

It was completed in August 1971 by 'Kip' at the R.A. Moog Inc. plant at Trumansburg, NY.
It's a 110v USA model.
All hardware looks to be original (aside from the case). The attack and decay controls were incorrectly-wired from the factory - the attack knob controls decay and decay knob controls attack: it has been left in this original state (a simple fix to put right, but we felt it to be part of the synth's history/identity - as did the US synth tech who worked on it previously).
Extensive work had been completed on this synth before we bought it to ensure reliability and practicality - this is an early Moog you can play: the tuning and tracking are very impressive for a Mini of this age with its original oscillator board.
All boards have had new metal film capacitors and new electrolytic capacitors.
The trimmers have been changed on the VCA, VCO and power supply boards improved fine tuning.
The filter board has rematched transistors and sounds stunning.
An octave buffer board has been added to the octave selector which, together with the additional wiring on the switches makes for greater stability.
Did we mention that the filter sounds gorgeous?

This Mini sounds and plays every bit as good as it looks: a practical classic and solid investment. The filter is slightly smoother and creamier than later Minis - this Moog has that classic rich larger than life sound."

"It's just been serviced and calibrated by James Walker at Synth Repair Services, including a full overhaul of the keyboard bushings, new jack sockets, recapped power supply and new slider caps. This synth is in excellent cosmetic condition for its age and sounds great. Inevitably for an instrument that's 30-plus years old, there's a few scuffs and scratches (see many detailed photos below), but overall it's in excellent condition. It runs at 240v.

These classic US synths are vastly underrated and represent excellent value for money compared to their more famous rivals, the Minimoog and Arp Oddyssey. They are hard to find, and highly-rated by synth cognoscenti. The flexible nature of this synth means it really punches above its weight: particularly notable features are the cross modulation options and mixable waveforms. It dates from the mid to late 70s and sounds like a classic 70s American monosynth should: powerful and tonally brilliant. Sound design-wise it's almost limitless with an abundance of bass, leads, and sound effects on tap - it's easy (and very rewarding) to lose yourself for hours programming this beast..."

LinnStrument ThumbJam demo (bus-powered by iPad Air)

Published on Oct 16, 2014 Geert Bevin

"Last night I made a lot of progress adapting the LinnStrument firmware so that it runs off of bus power from my iPad Air. This is a demo with ThumbJam's Bass Bowed sound, played with note-per-channel MIDI, recorded straight into Auria over Inter-App Audio.

The LinnStrument bus-powered mode is still experimental, but there's a good chance it will end up in the next firmware update. Note that this will only work with iOS devices that have lightning connectors, 30-pin connectors don't provide enough power."

NoisyLittleBugger Bjorklund lives!

Published on Oct 16, 2014 NoisyLittleBugger

And so it begins. This is how it all starts folks.  I created a new NoisyLittleBugger manufacturer/maker channel label for these moving forward. There have been previous posts featuring NoisyLittleBugger but they have been on DIY with the Mutable Instruments Shruthi-1 & Anushri, the Surge VSTi, and the Yamaha FS1R.  I believe this is the first NoisyLittleBugger design post.

Video description:
"Just another meaningless 20 second video. Sorry.

It shows my breadboarded Euclidean Sequencer working for the first time.

https://stimresp.wordpress.com/"

"I’m usually the one to grumble when I come across all those meaningless, grubby 20-second videos on Youtube. But today I’m adding my own. What the hell.

Here is Bjorklund just come to life.

At this moment I have a tight MIDI clock running on the ATMega328 at 24ppqn, with the option to go to a higher resolution if and when I trade-up to a better processor(Teensy 3.1 here I come!).

The 4 encoders and buttons are multiplexed using a single MCP2317, and the LED matrices are driven by 2 MAX7219s (both apparently counterfeit but working perfectly).

What you see are the available tempo divisions from slowest (each quarter note) to fastest (each MIDI tick) flashing across the screen.

I’ve come-up with an elegant way to deal with the note queues, rotation and sending MIDI. I can send notes on 8 tracks, remaining stable to master BPM of >300. All Looking good so far!

All that’s left to do is implement Bjorklund’s algorithm and feed it’s output to the note queue.

Then finally the controls/menu system and that’s it! It’s all optimization from there. It seems the most challenging part is documenting the process, but I’m gathering my notes…"

Synthesizer Sample Library Review: J4 from Synthmagic / Tronsonic - ARP and Motion

Published on Oct 16, 2014 Synth Anatomy

"Please support Synth Anatomy
http://www.sampleism.com/tw-sounds/sa...

J4 is a custom instrument for Kontakt 5 (5.2.1 required), based on a legendary analogue polysynth from the late 1970s – an ever-present on every synth enthusiast’s ‘Best Ever’ list! J4 is a single oscillator, analogue-style synthesizer featuring 6 waveforms, a sub square wave and a noise generator.
We’ve included 2 sets of samples with J4 – a DI set with Neve-style valve pre-amp/EQ, and a second set, through the same pre-amp and EQ but then recorded to ‘old-stock’ tape on a Studer A807 quarter inch reel-to-reel. making 1GB of sample content in total, there’s plenty of varoety for your productions.
J4 can be set to function in 4-voice mode (just like the original) or switch to full poly and take advantage of the extensive synth conttrols to creat some truly epic sounds of your own!
