Roland D-50 Linear Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a *really nice* vintage Roland D-50 synthesizer from 1987.

When I bought around 10 years ago it had sat as a "new, open boxed" unit in the back of a music store untouched since the late 80s. As a result it was essentially in new condition when I got it, and I have treated it well ever since. It only has the most minor of cosmetic imperfections, as you can see from the photos.

Functionally everything works great: the synth sounds perfect, all buttons, joystick, sliders and LCD screen work as new. The keys plays great - velocity action is fine, but aftertouch (as with almost all mid-80s Rolands) takes some force to activate. However, the aftertouch is still very playable, unlike most other D-50 I've played.

If you've been looking for a really nice example of a D-50 to relive your teen years in the 1980s, or capture some of those decade-defining L/A patches (Fantasia, Soundtrack, Atmosphere?) then this is the unit to go for."

Roland Alpha Juno-2 Analog Synthesizer with Original Box & Music Stand

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a really clean Juno-2 analog synth. It sounds perfect, and all buttons, data wheel and keys function like they should. The key velocity still works fine, but as with almost all mid-1980s Rolands the aftertouch requires a lot of force to activate. The LCD screen is crystal clear and strong, but the backlight has faded with time so it's not as bright in a dark room as it originally was (see photo).

Comes in the original shipping box, AND as a bonus the original sheet music stand. How cute is the sight of a Juno with a music stand attached?

These Junos really are the perfect compact analog polysynth: full of classic pads, leads, filter sweeps, drones and sound effects."

Pristine 1987 Casio CZ-1 Digital Synthesizer with Original Box, Cover & Manuals

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a remarkably clean Casio CZ-1 synthesizer from 1987.

I bought it about 10 years ago from a music store that had it as "new, open box" stock sitting in their back room since the late 1980s (also got a Roland D-50 from them, see my other auction).

As a result it was essentially brand new when I got it, and I have treated it very well ever since. For that reason, it not only functions 100%, but is probably the cleanest, as-close-to-new example of this classic digital synth still around.

All functions work, all buttons and sliders work fine, all keys play perfectly. Notice it still has the original tops for the chorus and volume sliders - why are those missing so often on other used CZ synths? Also the LCD is still crystal clear and has kept its beautiful bluish green backlight.

Comes in its original shipping box with all original manuals AND original dust cover."

1977 Korg Poly Ensemble (PE-2000) SN 78004

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"It's highly sought after for beautifully lush strings, brass and uniquely eerie vocal choir sounds, not to mention the remarkably huge cathedral pipe organ preset. With 3 detunable VCOs (supposedly based on the divide-down VCOs from the huge Korg PS3300 modular) it has a very thick rich sound, especially when routed through the onboard phaser - pan the dry output L and mix output R for some amazing stereo animation.

Like many vintage string machines it's fully polyphonic - if you lay your arm across the keyboard, every since note will sound. However, unlike ARPs and Rolands from the same time, each key has its own envelope generator which makes playing the Korg as a polysynth much more pleasing than dealing with typical string machine note-retriggering behavior.

This Korg was completely overhauled in 2009 including recapping the power supply and recalibrating the VCOs. It plays remarkably in tune with no warm-up time needed."

Vintage Doepfer VMS - Voice Modular System for Auction

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via eBay Germany

Note this would be the third Doepfer product according to the timeline here. It is from 1982 and it predates the Sound Sampler recently posted here by two years.

Another one spotted by Florian Anwander who had the following to say:

"This is an auction on ebay Germany. The VMS - Voice Modular System' was a Curtis based synth, that provided
* a voice card with two VCOs, VCF, VCA, and two ADSR,
* an addon card with two LFOs and Noise for each card, and may be some other functions
* an interface card to controll the synths parameters from a C64
* a 32 x S&H card, where the voltages from the interface where distributed to the voices.
* a memory card, where presets could be stored
One system could consist of 8 Voices.

In this auction also a Sound Sampler Card,a MIDI-CV-interface, and a card for a polyphonic CV/Gate-Keyboard is included.

Unfortunately the auction the seller does not ship to other countries than germany.

Original text of the auction in Googlish:
'Mid-80s, I have several times different special assemblies by Dipl. Phys. Dieter Doepfer purchased to build me a synthesizer module system. I once 1,032.50 DM for all these parts paid (the old invoices I send with). From the construction project unfortunately did not work out. The various boards, partially equipped with plenty Curtis CEM ICs and other were not built by me, the boards were therefore not connected to power supply voltages. While these are all modules of the early Doepfer devices series, but it would be a shame to dispose of these boards as hazardous waste. Even if only the Curtis ICs into account, then this package is still some value is, therefore, the starting price of the auction of EUR 150, -. Because I can not verify the circuit boards and assemblies, sell everything as defective goods. I'm still on the assumption that the ICs work.

There are the following modules with the corresponding assembled boards:

1 Voice Card
1 expansion card
1 analog output interface based card
2 analog output interface 32 channel S & H Cards
1 analog memory bank
1 half-Europe microcomputer board
1 analog memory bank backplane

The matching of the modules front panels, potentiometers, switches and jacks are not there. A few existing external components (front panels, mounting, etc. s. Photos) I deliver to.

At Curtis CEM ICs are installed on Voice Card and expansion card into the following number:
2x CEM 3340 VCO
1x CEM 3320 VCF
4x CEM 3330 Dual VCA
2x CEM 3360 Dual VCA
2x CEM 3310 ADSR

Full-linked blueprints for different modules with copies of the original CEM IC documentation (in English) are for the following modules in the Appendix:

Voice-Card
Expansion-card
Analog output interface (ASB)
Analog memory bank
Midi-CV interface (v. Peter Fischer)
Polyphonic computer keyboard (v. Peter Fischer)
Sound sampling unit (natural sound memory (SSE)

Furthermore, the scope of the auction include several brochures and price lists from Doepfer from 1983-84 and 1984-85, as well as a multi-page copy of a Elrad article about Curtis CEM CEM ICs and documentaries about other ICs.

This offer is valid only within Germany. This offer is valid for Germany only - no shipping to other countries.'"

Verbos Electronics Harmonic Oscillator

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Great condition Verbos Harmonic Oscillator. Minimal rack rash. Includes power cable and screws.

From the Manufacturer:
For the first time in Eurorack, this oscillator module provides outputs for the first 8 harmonics as sine waves. Also included are triangle, saw, square waves. A voltage controlled mixer with various methods of address allows the user to scan, tilt and mix the harmonics from both panel and external voltage control.

It is built on a discrete, all analog triangle core with an old school discrete transistor exponential converter. It has inputs for linear and exponential FM, the exponential with a reversing attenuator. Of course there's a 1 volt/octave trimmed CV input as well."

Otherwise it's really nice. Bright screen, no dead pixels, everything is 100% functional, no tuning issues and it sounds really great. An analog beast for pads, sequences, effects, leads, basses, one the last true great poly-analogs. It's been lightly used and well cared for. Check out the pictures for your own detailed inspection. I believe the SN is 6210 based on the writing underneath. Interesting way to mark it.

"For sale here a cool Analogue Solutions Europa. These are getting really rare, they have been discontinued for many years and you can't find them new anywhere. So this may be your best bet at getting a perfect looking unit. This is a great multi track sequencer with step style sequencing that's almost a combination of the TR808/TR606 step pattern meets TB303, note pattern, which makes it a great centerpiece for studio recordings or live performance. There's not much else out there that comes close to the capabalities and format of this sequencer, only the Genoqs comes to mind (at a much higher price). It doesn't produce any sounds, only creates sequences. Be sure to research its capabilities, here's a Sound on Sound review"

Raspberry Pi Music Synthesis : Virtual Analog oscillator walkthrough & introduction to wavetables

Published on Mar 27, 2015 Pi Synth

"A very quick run through of what the oscillators can do under my Raspberry Pi Virtual Analog synthesis model. Each monosynth has a pair of full-feature oscillators OSCA and OSCB, plus a sub-oscillator OSCC which may be configured as a sinusoidal sub-bass oscillator or as a noise generator. Each full-fat oscillator supports limited Phase Distortion (effectively PWM of any shape wave), smooth morphing of the wave between a pair of endpoints (e.g. sin to square, or saw to sin), and the oscillators' pitch, Phase Distortion, level and morph may be driven by a outputs from the modulation matrix. Modulation outputs are an arithmetic combination of an EG, an LFO, a constant offset, and a continuous controller. The envelope generators take 'Velocity' as a programming parameter to support piano-like vs. organ-like playing, and additionally the Envelope Generators support a 'sustain half-life' parameter, so rather than ADSR they are ADSĪ»RV.

Note that I largely play 'F' throughout. This makes for dull listening but more educational viewing - the global tuning for the synth has been tweaked slightly away from concert pitch. F1 - normally 43.654Hz - is retuned to 43.0664Hz, which is 44100 / 1024, ensuring the waveform remains stationary on screen, at least in the absence of frequency modulation or pitch bends. Also note that this demo only shows one rather than two waveforms on screen - the software auto-detects a mono signal, and pulls back to one wave. As soon as stereo is detected the second waveforms jumps back."

Raspberry Pi Music Synthesis : introduction to wavetables

Published on Mar 27, 2015

"The wavetable synthesis system for the Pi is the newest and the one I have to date explored least. Here's a very quick introduction to what's in place. In brief -
* a wavetable is a single cycle of a waveform, captured via sampling or computed
* 2 oscillators per note
* each oscillator driven by a wavetable trajectory through up to 8 wavetables
* 2 LFOs, one dedicated to pitch modulation via Mod Wheel
* single Envelope Generator for overall level

This is deisgned to be a much simpler, more CPU-light synth than the Virtual Analog engine, and so has none of the rich arithmetic modulation, but is still capable of some very cool sounds, and excels at those glacial early 1980s things - it makes for great beds and pads as a 4-note polyphony chord engine, and 4 notes of wavetable polyphony costs about as much CPU as a single Virtual Analog monosynth, so it's a good trade-off."

In Oblivion - (end of March 2015).
