New Digitone DS1000 Ad & the Digitone Teclado 44RT

This is not click bait, I swear! ;) For those looking for new Elektron products though, this is not it. That said, this might be just as interesting. Well, for those that find vintage-synths-long-lost-in-the-annals-of-history interesting, at least.

To the left you will find a ROCK STAR vintage ad for the Digitone DS1000. Below you will find a video for the Digitone Teclado 44RT. How did we come across these gems?

This is actually a follow-up to this post from back in 2011 for a different ad. The description that went with that post stated it was a DS1000 Giannini Programmable polyphonic synthesizer. Turns out it wasn't. According to a new comment from wmoecke in the comments section of the post, "This synth was created and sold exclusively by DIGITONE, a company owned and operated by Mr. ChristΓ³vΓ£o Batista da Silva. It never had anything at all to do with Gianinni." Gianinni was another Brazilian brand that re-packaged Siel synths as you can see in these previous posts.

I did a quick image search for DIGITONE DS1000 and found this new, old advert for it. See the previous post for the other ad, and some details. I'm guessing the details are correct minus the mislabel for Gianinni of course.

I then did a quick search for Digitone -elektron for other products and found the 44RT video below. Note the logo is the same cursive style Digitone with the ® on the e as on the DS1000.

If anyone knows more about the Digitone brand and any other products they manufactured, synths or other, let us know!

As I did not know the brand was Digitone prior to this post, I created a new label for them below. I'm also giving this post the New Old labels.

It looks like there was a DIGITONE before Elektron.

Teclado Digitone 44RT Published on Jun 4, 2019

This one appears more preset organ synth with rhythm section than synth. What's BLUMP?

Update via Marcelo Self in the comments:

"As far as I know, yes, Giannini had the license from italian companies. They made a Siel DK60 synth, renamed as GS7010 and Crumar string machine. Digitone was a division of Blump ( or vice versa) which made some preset organs, this synthesizer, DS1000, also comparable to the Poly800 ( or Siel DK60, Giannini GS7010) or Suzuki SX, but without the sequencer, and finally, a hybrid of splitable organ with autothythms and synthesizer section, the Poly SS61. They even thought about relese a system to compete with MIDI, based on paralel port, not serial. Specifically the SS61 sounded really good, rhythms , presets and poly synth part, but according to a local seller, were really not durable. Company stopped to make keyboadrs soon and I never heard about them after. Another Brazilian company which made organ with (solo) synthesizer section ( good) was Gambitt. And Gamasonic produced for a while a small 2 and 1/2 octave mono one with really few parameters, something more like a Prosoloist."

And via vito_mf:

Some years ago I bought a beat-up analog preset drum machine from digitone/blump. It need some heavy cleaning and whatnot so I took it to be serviced. The technician got really exited and he saw it. Turns out he worked at Digitone in the 80's. Last week I took it for some maintenance to another technician who ALSO worked at digitone. He told me they used to make robot pool cleaners in the 80's. But stopped because of poor sealing material. He said digitone instruments were not clones, he designed them himself and kept the schematics in a vault. About 5 years ago, by coincidence, I've met Mr. Batista's daughter. She told me some amazing stories: When he learned that R2D2 was operated by an actor with dwarfism he wrote George Lucas proposing to build a actually working robot. George Lucas wrote him back! (declining). He also built the robot who helped removed and discard the radioactive material in GioΓ’nia in the 90's in what was one of the worst atomic incidents in the world (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goi%C3%A2nia_accident). He did it on his own (no commission etc). When he asked for some compensation the government gave him a pat on the back. He went bankrupt soon after.

Song Mode for Digitakt Digitone Syntakt is here!

video upload by Dave Mech

"So they finally did it. They added song mode to the digitakt, digitone and syntakt! I think a lot of people will be very pleased with this. Really cool to see that Elektron keeps updating their line-up with really major updates that keep the instruments alive and relevant yet again for years to come.

In this video I show you how the song mode works and how you can also use it in a creative way. There was also a major update to the firmware of Syntakt adding a lot of great functionality like Portamento, global fx settings, midi mod matrixes and a few other very useful features. Beyond the scope of this video, and the video I did record to showcase those functions was unfortunately ruined. So maybe next time :)

Anyway, enjoy!

Elektron Digitone Ambient Works

video uploads by Benjamin Brodie

"Combining deep FM synthesis with a familiar subtractive synthesis signal flow, the Elektron Digitone is an amazingly powerful 8-voice synth. And with Elektron's acclaimed sequencing onboard, your creative potential is practically unlimited. Digitone is ready to create with four independent synth tracks, each with a 4-operator FM synth engine featuring eight different FM algorithms. Those algorithms — along with pretty much everything else — can be locked to different values for each sequence step. Factor in four MIDI tracks, an arpeggiator for each track, two LFOs per synth voice, multimode filtering, and built-in effects, and the Elektron Digitone may just be the FM synth you've always wanted to perform with.

The complex timbres and sonic animation you can create with FM synthesis make it a unique method of sound creation, and Digitone presents it in a welcoming fashion. Each of the four synth tracks features its own 4-operator FM synth engine with eight algorithms. Elektron gave Digitone a familiar subtractive synthesis-style workflow that makes tweaking these voices fun and intuitive. And with the potential to lock a different synth sound into every sequence step, Digitone offers far more sonic potential than most 8-voice synthesizers — or most FM synths in general for that matter.

The elusive song of the desert, caused by grains of sand rubbing against each other, is nature’s own FM synthesizer. Sometimes roaring, sometimes wailing, always enchanting. Enter the alluring dunes of Digitone: a compact synthesizer that fits snugly at home, in the studio, and on stage.

FM synthesis occurs when you modulate the pitch of one oscillator with another, to achieve rich and unexpected timbres. The ratio and rate of modulation impact the resulting sound. Digitone uses four oscillators, or operators, per voice. A particular configuration of operators is called an algorithm. For classical FM synthesis, it ends here.

With the Digitone, you get to shape, enrich and modulate the sound even further, using the powers of subtractive synthesis. Use the multimode filter with its custom envelope to soften or pronounce the wild overtones. Cut off the low, mid, or high frequencies. Sculpt with style and precision. Define the sound decisively using the full-featured amp envelope. Carve the contour of the sound.

You can add more movement to the sound using an LFO or two. Set any sound-shaping parameter in automated, repeated motion. At a very slow or a very fast speed, using a variety of different waveshapes, including a random one. Make your sound sway gently like the ocean, or flutter like a butterfly."

Synth Jams by Jay Hosking

Published on Jul 26, 2019 Jay Hosking

Spotted the first video in the playlist above on discchord.com. The Playlist contains 21 videos. You can use the player controls to skip around. Descriptions for each are below. All videos feature various gear so you should be able to get an idea of some of the capabilities of each featured. You can check out Jay Hosking's music at https://jayhosking.bandcamp.com/.

Note, more will likely get added over time. The following playlist is as of this post:

1. Jam w/ Vermona PERfourMER MkII, Elektron Analog Rytm MkII, OTO Bam, Styrmon Big Sky, Fugue Machine
A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by some pretty tough news that has me sentimental.

I loved the Elektron Analog Four MkII so much that I picked up the Analog Rytm MkII. My feelings on the Rytm are mixed. On the one hand, it's missing that spontaneity and spark of units like the Arturia DrumBrute Impact and Teenage Engineering OP-Z, with no readymade performance effects, roller bar, or global randomization, and a slower workflow. On the other hand, I really like its analogue sound engines, any unused tracks can be converted into impressive analogue mono synths, it does beautiful things to samples, and like all Elektron boxes it integrates the effects into the sequencer really nicely.

As for the Vermona PERfourMER MkII, I'd been pining over it for ages, and it was fun to finally tinker with it. The Perfourmer definitely excels in the mid- and high- range, and I love how the independent voices making really interesting voices for chords.

Vermona PERfourMER MkII + OTO Bam — Three synths (left chord note, right chord note, melody)
Vermona PERfourMER MkII + Strymon Big Sky — Bass chord note synth
Elektron Analog Rytm MkII — Drums, samples, sample melody, punchy bass
Fugue Machine (iOS) — Sequencing
IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo — MIDI out from iOS

Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little sidechain compression on the Perfourmer (to emphasize the sound that the Rytm was already making), and compression/limiting on the master.

Pipe Dream (Elektron Digitone 1.32 // Dreadbox Nymphes + Walrus Audio Julianna + The Pill Pedal)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"Can the sparkling digital vibes of the Elektron - Digitone form a nice pair with the fat analog sound of the Dreadbox - Nymphes?
I made this track recorded in one shot, trying to get an answer! I'll be glad to have your point of view πŸ˜‰

The 4 synth tracks of the Digitone were used here to play:
- T1: FM Drums
- T2: Chimes
- T3: Fast arpeggiated chimes
- T4: Lead bells (played live)

In the recent v1.32 firmware update of the Digitone, there's a nice mixer view which makes it way easier to fade in the different tracks 🀩

I also used 3 out of the 4 MIDI tracks of the Digitone to sequence the Nymphes 6-voice polyphonic analog synth. Each MIDI track played a different part (but with the same sound as the Nymphes is not multi-timbral):
- MIDI1: Bass
- MIDI2: Lead
- MIDI3: Riff (triggered by the FILL button of the Digitone)

I also make quite heavy use of the probability feature of the Digitone's sequencer in order to add some variations on the unique pattern which was used.

* Hardware used *
- Elektron - Digitone: Drums, Chimes, sequencer.
- Dreadbox - Nymphes: Bass, Lead, Riff.
- Walrus Audio - Julianna: Stereo Analog Chorus/Vibrato pedal, adding this wide stereo effect on the Nymphes 😍
- The Pill Pedal: Ducking the Nymphes, triggered by the phones' output of the Digitone (set it up in order that mainly the kick is triggering the effect)."

100% Digitone dub techno jam // Mastering Digitone part 2 groove

video upload by Dave Mech

"In depth course for Digitone ! Get here: https://davemech.live/shop

Ello, here's a new 100% Digitone jam. I created this groove for the Mastering Digitone course part 2. The groove itself you learn to create when following this second part of the course. The performance was recorded for this video. It's a deep dub techno groove made with only the Digitone. It still amazes me how much one can squeeze from this instrument. The little post processing I applied was a low cut eq to tone down the stuff below 30hz and a hint of dynamic EQ to make the mids a bit more forward. The limiter applied is practically doing nothing because I wanted the groove to sound as dynamic as it can be heard directly from the Digitone itself.

Get this track here: https://davemech.bandcamp.com/track/g...

Enjoy!"

Aureate πŸ“€ (Sequential Take 5 // Elektron Digitone + Red Panda Particle + Strymon Deco 2) Chords Jam

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"No sequencers were harmed during this recording! πŸ˜„ Just wanted to roam with some chords played live on the Take 5 analog synth. Further on I introduced the Digitone FM synth where I used 3 tracks (with 3 different sounds), where 2 of the tracks have their integrated ARPEGGIO enabled, with different settings in order to add some rhythmic complexity to the jam πŸ₯

The Digitone is being fed into the Particle 2 granular delay then the Deco pedal, in order to add random variations to the FM sounds and some kind of LO-FI vibes!

The MIDI Out of the Take 5 synth is triggering the Digitone. Hence both synths are playing the same notes. However the 2 ARPs on the Digitone help bring the syncopated sounds.

I think that the blending of the analog and digital synths here, makes the global sound and texture of this jam sound quite interesting! Hope you liked it too? 😊

* Hardware used *

// PADS:
- Sequential Take 5 (5-voice analog synth)

// CHIMES:
- Elektron Digitone (8-voice FM groovebox) + Red Panda Particle 2 (granular delay and pitch shifter) + Strymon Deco 2 (tape saturation & doubletracker)"

Elektron Digitone Keys Sounds

Published on May 8, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Read our article about the Digitone Keys here: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal...

Elektron has a new version of the Digitone that has a built in keyboard as well as a few other extras including individual stereo outs for all four channels and extra modulation controls. There are 8 knobs above the keyboard that control a preset set of voice controls as well as a set of 8 user programmable controls. The mod wheel and pitch bend as well as aftertouch and velocity from the keyboard can be routed as modulation sources to multiple destinations at once.

The synthesis of the Keys version is the same easy to use but great sounding FM engine from the original Digitone that also features the filters of subtractive synthesis.

Shuffle Trip πŸ”€ (Elektron Digitone + Particle + Deco // Korg Drumlogue // Sequential Take 5)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"This track starts with a PAD sound sequenced and played by the Elektron Digitone (Polyphonic Digital Synthesizer). I then enable the Doubletracker effect (on the Strymon Deco 2 tape simulation pedal) and unmute 2 other tracks on the Digitone, playing a LEAD and CHIMES sounds.

Enters the Korg Drumlogue (analog and digital drum machine) with some DRUMS (I used only one drum pattern where I made use of STEP probability to add some variations to the pattern).

And finally the BASS line played by the Sequential Take 5, sequenced by one MIDI track of the Digitone. In order to create this beefy dirty BASS sound, I use the onboard OVERDRIVE and DISTORTION effect of the synth! 😎🀘 The BASS line is also playing in triplets to add an odd groove to the track (it wasn't so easy to program on the Digitone MIDI track as I needed to shift each notes off the grid manually πŸ˜…).

Hope you'll enjoy!"

Ambient Minijam - 2018-08-12 (with Korg Monologue, Volca Keys)

Published on Aug 12, 2018 Oscillator Sink

"More experiments using the Digitone as a 'brain' in a live jam setting. Here, as well as sequencing its own, wonderful synthesis engine, it's also in control of the Korg Monologue and Volca Keys.

Both of the Korgs are being routed through the audio inputs on the Digitone so they can take advantage of the Digitone's own Reverb and Delay - all the ambience effects you hear are coming live from the Digitone.

I've gone for something a little more ambient today and I think these 3 synths really compliment each other in this setting - especially with the Digitone's reverb helping out!"
