Misprints of the Synth World

Update: Make sure to check out the comments in this post for some other interesting examples.

Thought this was interesting. Peter Forrest of Spheremusic and the VEMIA auction called out that the Korg PS-3100 up for auction had LIMITER misspelled as LIMITTER. Ron West posted a link to the image below where you can see it. According to Peter Forrest the mistake was caught and later models were corrected. I wonder how many other synths have unintentional misprints. I know many of my posts do. : )

"I was just having a last play on the Korg PS-3100 that is in the auction ending today, and saw that this one has the spelling mistake LIMITTER on its front panel. It's serial number 712139 - presumably an early one, before it was spotted and corrected."

More Essential Synth Books - Peter Forrest

The "A-Z of Analogue Synthesizers" books by Peter Forrest are hands down two of the most highly regarded synth publications out there. I have a copy of each myself and they are absolutely essential in my opinion. Highly, highly recommended if you are into synths. They read like an encyclopia/catalog of synthesisers. There's a load of detail on each synth including specs and images. I sent an email to Peter Forrest asking if he had a recommended link to put up for the image on the right pane below. He ended up sending me a few nice scans of the books and another book, which I do not yet have, (but heard good things about), "Analogue Heaven, the Museum of Synthesizer Technology." Title link takes you to those shots. These are great books to curl up in your favorite spot and just flip through. Sometimes a book is just better than a computer screen.

For more info on ordering send email to pforrest@vemia.co.uk.

MATRIXSYNTH Visits Thighpaulsandra's Aeriel Studios

Click here for images of my recent visit to Thighpaulsandra's Aeriel Studios.

I want to thank both Thighpaulsandra and Peter Forrest for the great company. You can find more info on Thighpaulsandra on his official website (check out his discography) as well as his MySpace page. He recently performed in Analog Live! Peter Forrest is the author of the A-Z of Analog Synthesizers as well as the man behind the auction site Vemia (Spheremusic.co.uk). You might remember Vemia from these posts.
Over the next few days I will be putting up some videos of the visit. Mostly synth talk of us or rather Peter and Thighpaulsandra noodling around while I taped. Nothing too elaborate, but it should bring you into the visit. I created an Ariel Studios label below for this set of posts so once they are all up you can go back and review them all at once if you like.

On the synth front we have:
Two Synton Fenix Modulars
Two ARP 2600s
Two Oberheim SEMs with patch points
A Red Synton Syrinx
EMS Synthi and Putney
Two Serge Modulars (one old and one new)
Plan B, Cynthia, Doepfer Modular
Moog Voyager
Roland SH-5
Sequential Circuits Prophet-10 and Prophet-5
and more...

Yamaha GX-1 Coming up for Auction

Via Peter Forrest of Spheremusic. For those of you that do not know who Peter Forrest is, he wrote the excellent "The A-Z of Analogue Synthesizers" and he runs the Vemia Auctions on Spheremusic which once had Brian Eno's gear listed. You can find the A-Z books in the book section on the right of this site.

"The superb ex-Mickie Most Yamaha GX-1 complete with its two tube-amped speakers will be coming up for auction on VEMIA at www.spheremusic.com , November 3-10.
It might seem a bit early to publicise it, with the auction finish two months away - but it's going to have a reserve of around 15000 UK pounds, so people will need time to organise selling the grandmother or yacht or doing the odd hour of overtime.
It's in the UK, and unlike one or two of these rare monsters, it's in very good condition.
I'll know more in a few weeks' time.
Peter F"

Peter Forrest Interview on VICMOD

"As most synth heads know, the two books you simply must own are both from Peter Forrest!

The A-Z of Analogue Synthesizers is a synth lovers dream with so much information about all the great and not so great synthesizers specs and history. I caught up with Peter and asked him some questions."

You can find the full interview on VICMOD.

A - Z Of Analogue Synthesisers Part One: A - M by Peter Forrest

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Legendary books from Peter Forrest. Bought by me direct in the late 90s, iirc, so I could drool over things I didn't then have the money for, ha ha. It is the revised edition and is 0559/6000 of the limited edition.

It is well-used. There are a few minor tea stains throughout, a tear from the back cover as pictured and, as stated, it is well-thumbed. I spent many an hour reading through! This is reflected in the price. So, if you want a copy to refer to and not just put on a shelf, this is the one for you!

LOVELY 16-page full-coloured centre section. It takes each manufacturer in turn and ALL of their models and gives as much info as Peter could on each one, as well as his own opinions on them. Year of manufacture, original price, custom options, advertising material, price now (well...then - the late 90s!), well-known users etc, before going into the detail of each 'board. It's just a fantastic book and I always regretted not getting the 2nd.

And for those baulking at the price...check out the other listings! £200, £400 and £900?!?!?!"

P.S. Check the A-Z thumbnail link on the top of the site.

E-PRO Spirit Font

Warning, this post is about as geeky as it gets.
Background:
Pictured is the E-PRO Spirit. This image was pulled by nick kent who mentioned the following from Peter Forrest's, A-Z of Analogue Synthesis (BTW, these books are must haves for synth enthusiasts. If you want a copy, drop Peter a line): "From picture linked below and the Peter Forrest book text it looks like there is a HP and LP filter in the E-Pro Spirit, though it also looks like they ran out of room to mark the HPF clearly. The abbreviation up top isn't clear or is just too clever. VCI-PF (?)"

Geeky:
Take a look at what looks like the VCI-PF he mentions. Apparently that is actually VCHPF, as in highpass filter. The font they used is called STOP, and the H and P share edges. Just thought that was interesting. Told you this post would be about as geeky as it gets. The font tip came from Chris Strellis on AH.

The listing is from the author Peter Forrest who states this is likely the last set.  These are great books and imo the most comprehensive.  Click on the pics to get an idea of what they are like.  Peter also has other items listed including The Museum of Synthesizer Technology and Synthesizer von Gestern II.

Thomas Synti 1055 (Moog Satellite Made in Italy) thru Dedalus Delay on Ipad2

video upload by VSMI - Vintage Synths Made in Italy

"The Synti 1055 was designed as an improvement to the Satellite, which Thomas Organ Company aquired the rights to manufacture in 1973
The Synti 1055, like the Satellite, is an analog preset monosynth with a 3 1/2 octave, 44-note (F-C) keyboard (7 more notes than the Satellite). The major difference between the Synti 1055 and the Moog keyboards is that the preset tabs are above the keyboard instead of below. To the left of the keyboard there are 7 sliders for modifying a preset, including filter modulation, cutoff frequency, and resonance.

Peter Forrest's A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers books

via this auction

"A complete two-volume set of the most comprehensive encyclopaedia of analogue synths and keyboards in the world - direct from the author. Now that all completely mint copies of the A-M part are sold out, I'm selling sets which include an A-M which is not mint...

"The A-M is a printers' run-on copy, so had no serial number, but I have written that in it, and the N-Z is serial number 855. Both books will be signed by the author - if you want a particular dedication, please say when you pay.

The original A-M was produced in 1994, and then re-written and expanded in 1998. There are probably nearly twice as many words crammed in to the second edition as there were in the first. The second edition has 320 pages, 16 of which are full colour, while the original edition only had 240 pages. There's a whole lot of extra information about EMS, Moog, and many other manufacturers; a greatly improved index, and a new index to the musicians mentioned in the book. So if you're into, say, Tangerine Dream, you can find the 25 pages on which they're mentioned; Tim Blake, 8 pages; and even Tim Buckley on two.

The first edition was printed in a run of 2000, and 2000 copies of this revised edition were also printed. This second edition has been officially out of print for well over a year now, so is impossible to buy via any bookseller like Amazon.

The original N-Z was printed in 1996, in a run of 2000, and then the second revised edition (of 3000) was printed in 2003. It has 384 pages, including 16 in full colour. Please check the photos to see the sort of coverage you will get of rare, obscure instruments like the Syntons and Wavemakers or ultra-famous offerings like the Rolands and Yamahas.

The total number of words in these two books is probably over half a million. With hundreds of illustrations, charts, etc., the whole package provides a comprehensive guide to analogue synths, organs, electric pianos, theremins, etc., up to 1998 for ones beginning A-M, and 2003 for the N-Zs. The books have been well-reviewed in magazines all round the world, by people as knowledgeable as Mark Vail and Gino Robair, and enjoyed by some of the best-known names in electronic music, such as Fatboy Slim, Hans Zimmer, Herbie Hancock, Aphex Twin, Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode, and Adrian Utley of Portishead.

Who's selling: my name's Peter Forrest. I've been writing about synths, keyboards, effects and recording gear for over 20 years now, and for 14 years I have been running an internet auction called VEMIA (Vintage Electric Musical Instrument Auctions) which specialises in synths, drum machines, effects, and so on. Please check my eBay feedback to see that you can bid with confidence. Feel free to email me any questions."

I have a copy of these books. They are absolutely amazing. Highly, highly recommended. This is the ultimate analog synth reference book. This is also listed in the Synth Books section.

VEMIA Auction Nov 4

Via Peter Forrest. Note the VEMIA auction usually has some pretty interesting stuff. Last year some gear from Brian Eno including his DX7 were included. Definitely worth taking a peak. Here are some previous posts mentioning VEMIA.

"Next VEMIA auction has some good stuff coming, including 22 lots (actually probably nearer 40 or 50 lots) starting at 22 uk pounds with no reserve.

Some items are already up online at www.spheremusic.com

They include an ARP 2600 (but that's already had some keen bidding); an Obie 4-voice (at 110 pounds at the moment); some Metasonix items - two already listed; and, to come, a Moog Taurus, a MIDI'd Odyssey module, and quite a few other interesting pieces.

No hidden reserve on anything in the auction - one bid gets it if no-one bids higher. 10% buyer's premium, but you get personal service and protection for that, plus the ability to pay in a variety of ways for free. Auction ends Saturday Nov 11.

Thanks! Peter Forrest"

Synth Books

No title link. With the recent book posts for Essential Retro and Real World Digital Audio, I thought I should put up a list of synth books. A friend of mine joined the Amazon affiliate program and started putting up book ads in posts where he reviewed the particular book. I actually liked the look of the ads because they include a small snapshot of the book. So, I figure why not. I joined and added a few of my favorites to the right pane (just scroll down and look for the books on the right). I also found one I hadn't heard of before called "Quick Guide to Analog Synthesis." Anyone know if this one is any good?

BTW, if you know of any others I should add to the list on the right, please post them in the comments below and I'll put them up. I checked Amazon for A-Z of Analog Synthesis but surprisingly it wasn't there. BTW, I don't want to limit the list to just ads, so if you have any links for synth books not on Amazon or other, send them my way. I just think it would be cool to have a list of all synth books on the right. And yes the Amazon ones are ads, no trickery there on my part. And obviously, if you are interested in picking up one or more of these books, feel free to support my site by ordering through one of these links. : )

Update via Peter Forrest in the comments below : )
"Hi all - very nice to be a toilet stalwart! I'm Peter Forrest, writer of the A-Z books. Sorry, but Amazon demanded such a ridiculous price to stock my books that I won't do it through them. Luckily you can buy them direct through me if you want :o) The easiest way is to email me at pforrest@vemia.co.uk, and I'll send you the details. I also still have some copies of the Synthesizer Museum books (and videos if anyone wants a nice retro original vintage 90s etc. etc. version of Bob Moog's speech and a bunch of incredible synths)."

NAMM: Sneak Peak on New MOOG Products

via Peter Forrest on the AH list:

"If I missed some posts, forgive me.. but I just saw that Future Music February UK edition has details of three interesting Moog items:- a Little Phatty II with arpeggiator and USB; a retro Voyager with no MIDI, presets, or touchscreen but 'enhanced modulation', different knob layout, and a lower price; and the MP-201 pedal - USB, MIDI, and four CV outputs.

Maybe, I just thought, FM jumped an embargo on this. In which case apologies to Amos and the Moog company, but if the guys who read FM can know about it, I guess AH can as well. [and MATRIXSYNTH]

Same mag has my interview with Peanut, the keyboard player with the Kaiser Chiefs, whose favourite stage instrument is and always has been the SH-101. He's had all his keyboards re-finished in white by list member Jeff Toman of Custom Synth. They look very good indeed. (Kaiser Chiefs are one of the top indie/rock bands in the UK, and their live shows are legendary.)

Peter F"

Regarding photos:
"There were photos, yes.
But although watson asked really nicely, I'm not going to do it.
I just checked on the Moog site, and it's obvious that FM did forget an embargo, and that's basically cheating in magazine / manufacturer circles.
I doubt they meant to, but there we go.
Both look good. The retro Voyager is like a cross between a Mini and a modular in visual design - lots of module-like vertical divisions between sections.
I expect pics will be up soon enough on the web.
Peter"

I completely respect Peter on this one, but if you have a shot, and feel like sending it in, feel free. FM UK is print and it's been released meaning all of the UK can see it. If no one does send one in, we'll know soon enough as NAMM starts tomorrow.

MOOG Gets It's Name Back in the UK

Peter Forrest of the A-Z of Analog Synthesizers (see link on the right book section of the site if you want to pick up a copy), and Spheremusic (Vemia), sent the following into AH. I asked him if I could put it up and he gave the thumbs up.

"Just looking through the latest Sound On Sound, I saw a Turnkey store ad for the Little Phatty stage edition and Voyager Fire. The intriguing thing is that the Little Phatty is being sold under the Moog brand, while the Voyager is still 'by Bob Moog'. Did I miss some change in the legal situation? Secondly, the ad claims that the Little Phatty is one of the fastest selling synths in living memory. I wondered how much of that is ad hyperbole (after all, it could be one of the, um, 500 fastest selling synths...). Amos or anyone, can you fill me in?
Little Peter Phorrest (sic)"

And sure enough Amos replied:
"Hi Peter, AH'ers,

I am not 100% informed on this, but I know that Moog Music has regained the right to do business in the UK under their proper name. This means no more "censored" manuals and logo-less synths! :-) However, it may be that the rights to the product name "Minimoog" are still in dispute, which could explain why the Voyager is still Voyager by Bob Moog and not Minimoog Voyager as it is known elsewhere in the world.

Cheers,

Amos"

I wonder what happened to Alex Winter who owned the MOOG name in the UK. (BTW, for those that care an update to the Vemia site is finally in the works and should address the script errors and other issues).

Peter Forest's A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers

via this auction

This is just a glimpse of what's in there. An absolute must have for the synth enthusiast. My words, not the auction. Seriously the A-Z of Analogue Synthesizers is the desert island set of synth books. Highly recommended. Note they are listed in the Synth Books section.

"A complete two-volume set of the most comprehensive encyclopaedia of analogue synths and keyboards in the world - direct from the author.

This second edition has been officially out of print for a year now, so is impossible to buy via any bookseller like Amazon. I thought I had run out of every single mint copy of the books, but today my wife was doing a bit of cleaning and pulled out a drawer, and discovered two packets of books underneath the drawer. We then looked in the other side of the chest of drawers and found two more packets, making 96 books in all. This particular book is one of the books that the printer printed as 'run-on' - when a printer is supposed to print 2000 they will always do a few more to be certain they have done enough, in case a few have blemishes. That means it has no official number in the limited edition, so I have numbered it out of 2096 and initialed the number. (But just to be more complicated.... we're disappointed to find that many of the books have some slight defects from their long time in non-perfect storage - mostly where one or two of the colour photo pages have stuck together in places - talk about synth porn..... - and you can see where they have had to be peeled apart. Usually on the page edges, not very serious, but there when you look for it. So this unblemished A-M is one of only very few still in existence - the rest will have to be sold as imperfect.)
