MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST 2013: John Bowen Demos the Rotors on the Solaris
Published on Mar 18, 2013 matrixsynth·274 videos
One of my favorite features of the John Bowen Solaris. You won't find this in other synths. The simplest way to think of a rotor is a cycle through four oscillators. You can set whatever oscillators you want in the four rotor slots in any order you like, including up to four external audio inputs. If you want you can set all rotors to just OSC 1. Why would you do that? Because you can set modulations on OSC 1 and then use the rotor to skip through the changes. You can then cycle the rotor into the audio frequency range to create new timbres not possible on other synths. You can also adjust the crossfade level for the rotor for either smooth sounding or more edgy transitions. Everything is open to modulation as well. This is a new and pretty incredible method of timbral synthesis for source oscillators when you think about it. Be sure to see the John Bowen Synth Design website for more.
A side note: this marks the last post of my own content on the MMTA Spring SYNTHFEST 2013. More is coming in from others though, so stay tuned.

As an established gospel and jazz fusion keyboardist, Cory knows the importance of having an inspiring instrument at your fingertips: "The Kronos does a great job of making you feel as if the instrument that you're playing is right in the same room as you. Every time I browse another sound, it kind of gets me into a different place that makes me just want to play, as if I am a violin player, or if I have an actual electric piano in my house. Controlling a Eurorack Modular with the iPad & Lemur
Controlling my Eurorack from my iPad (Lemur) from Icaro Ferre on Vimeo.
"In this video I'm trying to use the Lemur app on my iPad to control my Doepfer A-106-5 module in my Eurorack.
So basically the A-106-5 is receiving CV from my Expert Sleepers ES-3 (which is receiving data from the Silent Way plugin on my mac via lightpipe).
The Lemur app is connected to my mac and it's mapped to Silent Way's parameters.
Kinda cool, kinda nerdy.
PS: I know I'm moving the camera a lot but my idea was to document the process so I didn't pay much attention to the excessive amount of movement! Sorry :)"

"Just running through some midi and different presets to show it's working. It's for sale locally. I test each knob to show what they do. At the end I am pointing one or two jumpy encoders. A little bit of reverb from the Furman RV-1 Spring Reverb. Apologies for poor audio, will add the HQ audio soon. Thanks."

"5 Space rack mount. Awesome synth with classic Novation sound. All the same sliders and knob controls as the keyboard versions. Very easy to program, sounds great, pads, drones, leads, basses… Very versatile synth. Awesome arpeggiator. On board FX. Delay, Reverb, Distortion, Chorus, Eq, Panning, and Vocoder. Tested and working 100%! Good physical condition, but missing 2 knobs and the attack slider. No power cord, but it takes a generic 3 prong power cord.
You are going to want to read this awesome review from Sound on Sound. It will tell you everything you want to know about the KS"

"The filterbank is a dual hp/bp/lp filter than can be used in series or parallel. It has incredible sync options for syncing the harmonics of the filters. It has incredibly warm tube type distortion at the input stage and a really great LFO for even further effect variables. It also has 2 sets of envelopes for further shaping the waves. The sherman filterbank V1 has a nice depth that the V2 didn't seem to have, in my opinion. I have owned both and they are fairly different machines with different nature and characteristics aside from features. This is an early run V1 in great condition. Sounds excellent and really provides an extreme variety of possibilities..."
