1960 R A MOOG Vanguard TUBE Theremin SN 6036 & Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

via this auction

"For sale is a 1960' R. A. (Robert) Moog "The Vanguard" all tube theremin!

MOOG and theremin collectors, here is incredibly rare model for your collection! I've never seen one for sale!

This unit exudes a super cool retro vibe and leaves novices guessing what it is! Is it a radio? A transmitter? A stereo? No, it's way cooler than that! It's a R.A. Moog tube theremin with integrated amp and speaker for a complete plug and play electronic instrument! In 1960, theremins were Bob Moog's only product and he probably had his hands on every one that left his small factory. Shipping totals for this model where very low! The serial number is 6036 making it only the 36th vanguard made in 1960. Take a close look at the pictures!

This theremin is in excellent condition and functions well making those eerie electronic violin sounds used in classic sci-fi films and TV of the past. 1960 was the first year for the Vanguard and this one is in great shape. It's all is original except the antennas which where missing when it came to me, so I had some custom made from stainless steel. Also the plastic coil clamps had become brittle and cracked so I replaced them with modern versions.

Features:
Robert Moog design
All vacuum tube circuitry with integrated amplifier and speaker
A deco wedge shaped cabinet made of solid mahogany
A cool control plate with text that lights up when turned on and bake-lite knobs

Original R. A. Moog Co. product description:

"The Vanguard"
The Vanguard is a completely self-contained electronic musical instrument. The tone is generated by purely electronic means, without the use of motors, strings, or other mechanically moving parts. A specially designed vacuum tube oscillator circuit, whose operation is sensitive to movements of the player's hand, generates an electric wave. When this wave leaves the oscillator, it passes through another circuit which adds the correct degree of overtones to give a pleasing and musical quality to the tone...

Still another circuit enables the loudness of the tone to be controlled by the player's hand. After leaving this circuit, the tone is amplified, and converted into sound waves by a loudspeaker.
All components of the Vanguard, including the loudspeaker, are housed in a handsome, hand-rubbed solid mahogany cabinet. The tuning adjustments are conveniently located in front of the player as he faces the instrument.

The pitch range covers three and one-half octaves, extending from an octave below Middle C to two and one-half octaves above Middle C...
1960 Price: $395.00

Also, here's some links to Jon Spencer using his Vanguard live! (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion)
It's not ambient or classic theremin music but shows a Vanguard in use."

"Jon Spencer Blues Explosion performing "Afro" on "The Word" on UK TV Channel 4, in 1994. This has long been one of my cherished VHS tapes! I think this was during their second UK tour, maybe early 1994. Shame they don't really get the props now, but like Mark Lamarr says on this clip at this time they really were the best live act around"

"This particular unit has been retrofitted with MIDI in/out/thru. It has mono and stereo outputs and panning pots for each voice. It's an 8 voice synthesizer with 2 vco's per voice: saw, pulse, and triangle. If you're looking for beautifully sounding synthesizer that will spark the creativity in any musician, this is the auction for you.

This unit has been internally refurbished, tested, and approved this year. Considering the work done on this unit, I would price this at $5,000, but it's priced to sell. Despite the few minor cosmetic imperfections as seen in the photos, this will be the closest you will probably find to buying a brand new Oberheim OB8.

The following parts have been replaced with new ones:
-Upper voice board-U12
-Mainboard-lithium battery
-Lower voice pcb-C18
-Upper voice board-R507, 807,819
-Upper/Lower voice pcb
-Lower voice board-Voice 4 Osc. 1, Upper voice pcb-Voice 4 Osc. 2

Bob Moog Foundation Retrospective on Archival & Bob's Lament

Above: "Several months after Bob’s passing, The Bob Moog Foundation (BMF) staff rescued Bob’s priceless archives from its home on pallets in his former vacant workshop space in the country, where it was exposed to heat and humidity. It was Bob’s intention to take care of the archives himself after his retirement. Unfortunately, he passed away prior to his retirement."

The Bob Moog Foundation has posted an article focusing on their work with Bob Moog's archives.  If for some reason you are new to the story, the archives are set to move to Cornell against the BMF's wishes.  See this post for details.  The following was sent out today via the BMF:

"For seven years, the Bob Moog Foundation has dedicated itself to the preservation of Bob Moog's Archives.

We have just posted a retrospective blog celebrating our efforts and tracing our progress.

Through photos taken over the years, see where this one-of-a-kind collection of documents and hardware was stored prior to our rescue and where we are today. Also, take a glimpse at the numerous events and museums where we have exhibited the archives.

Read the full retrospective here.

We'd like to say a special thank you to all of the volunteers who have donated thousands of hours of time to assist the BMF with preserving and protecting Bob Moog's archives. You are an important part of our work, and your efforts will live on through Bob's legacy!

Call to Action

One of our supporters started a petition protesting the transfer of Bob's archives to Cornell University. (If you don't know about this story, please read about it here.)

Please consider joining almost 1,000 people by signing the petition here. Please share this petition with your friends and family and help give the Bob Moog Foundation a voice regarding this disappointing decision.

Thank you all for your continued support of the Bob Moog Foundation--we wouldn't be where we are today without you!

Sonic Sadness: Bob's Lament [embed below]

The removal of Bob Moog's archives from Asheville will affect thousands of people in this area and beyond. Music technology educator, BMF volunteer, journalist for the music technology industry, and most importantly, Bob's long-time friend, Geary Yelton, gives voice to the lament of so many people with his beautifully haunting composition, posted on SoundCloud just a couple of days ago -- Bob's Lament. Emulator EMU EIII Black Rack Mount Digital Sampler with Analog Filters

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is the EIII Rack, not the XP or the XS model... Very few of these units were made and they are very hard to find. This EIII rack is the 8meg unit with analog filters and 16 note polyphony. Also has the 100meg internal hard drive with 77meg free (see pics)..

Sample ANYTHING and it sounds rich and creamy. The filters and converters on this model are warm and amazing for drums. Arguably, the EIII is one of the greatest sounding samplers ever made. Used by Depeche Mode, Genesis and many, many more...

Specs:
8 MB sample RAM
Latest OS 2.42 1993 on floppy disk
100MB Internal Hard Drive
Low Pass Analog Filters
16-bit Digital Sampler/Stereo16 voices
33k, 44.1kHz sample rate
4U rack version
16 channel Sequencer
SMPTE
Unit condition- for it's age, this 25 year old sampler is in good condition. Some rack rash around the ears and top. One voice gone bad and a 2nd is developing a bit of hiss (both slight distortion... disabled in the setup). If you know about the EIII's, then you're aware that this is a common problem with the line. It may just be a matter of reseating the voice cards (see pic). This is a delicate piece of gear. So packing & shipping needs to be done very carefully to avoid any damage to the voice cards. I pack and ship FedEx ground... Sorry, only USA for now."

Doepfer A-102 Diode Low Pass (VCF9) EMS Filter Module For Eurorack

analoglsd (RSS)

"Module A-102 is a reproduction of the legendary low pass filter design that uses diodes in the filter stage as frequency controlling elements resulting in "strange" resonance behaviour and frequency response as resonance and frequency are not independent from another.

As for the rest the A-102 is identical to the A-120 Moog low pass filter resp. the A-103 (18dB TB303 Filter). I.e. the same controls, inputs and outputs. Only the filter sound is different:

manual control of filter frequency
3 CV inputs (CV1, CV2, CV3), 2 of them with attenuator (CV2, CV3)
input level control
resonance control up to self oscillation (depends upon the frequency setting for the A-102)"

Kurzweil K150fs Additive Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction. Video of one previously posted here.

"One of the very first offerings from Kurzweil Music systems, when they were still located in Waltham, Massachusetts. This is the expanded "FS" (Fourier Synthesis) version of the K150. Besides being an early additive synthesizer, the K150 is notable for its implementation - a rack of 240 digital oscillators? 256-stage envelopes? MIDI velocity, polyphonic aftertouch, splits, layers and more? The MIDI implementation is more impressive than most modern instruments, and this was from 1986, when gear like the Juno106 were dealing with simple note on/off messages. It is utterly unlike anything else. Not a great general purpose box for all sundry tasks, but a programmers dream machine for those who desire to craft some sounds which could not be done with anything else. Unlike most digital synths (which lack low-end), the K150 is all low end. In fact, it cuts off around 8khz-10khz. You can play with the included presets for days, or hook up to an old Apple computer for full harmonic editing. Embrace this rare opportunity!"

"Has ARP label but is basically a re-branded Siel Orchestra. Limited production years, 1979-80 ….a four part analog orchestral synth with Brass, Strings, organ, and Piano. Polyphonic, fat sounds…nice Chorus effect on Strings is like an Arp Solina on the cheap ! Brass patch is especially fat and nice. all voices can be turned on at the same time for a nice layered sound.

All keys works, has all original slider caps, all voices work and sound as they should with the exception of..

Brass Sustain …makes the sound brighter but does not add sustain, and its LED does not light.

Has pop-up "stand" on bottom of case for playing on top of another keyboard....Case is okay for a 34 year old instrument…paint is crinkled in a small area on right of control panel, and there are some dings on the back. some chips in the wood side blocks.

To hear demos of this particular synth, i have posted YouTube clips with external reverb added….

ALTAIR 231 - Vintage Soviet Analog 3VCO Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"Altair 231 is an almost identical copy of the famous Moog`s Minimoog model D synthesizer made in the Soviet Union.

It was manufacture on "Estradin" military radio plant in Zhitomir city in January 1987. The serial number of the unit -3700.

Condition

This auction synthesizer after full professional service and in really excellent working condition.

All electronics was checked and tuned. All old soviet capacitors was changed on good quality new. All potentiometers and switches was cleaned and works without any noise on mooving. Old soviet In/Out connectors was changed on good quality Amphenols. 3 Oscillators was fine tuned. Cheap original plastic sides was changed on great wooden. In two words the old machine reincarnated in new spaceship...

Altair has the same architecture as Minimoog model D and the sound is also very similar. But due to original soviet electronic parts it has it`s own unique character.

It has very fat and impressive analog sound with wide sound palette. It can produce fat analog basses, classic rock leads, hard razor waves, various space fx`s , noises, ambient textures etc... The filter is really extreme and sounds fantastic.

The set include >>> Altair 231 synthesizer + original volume pedal + set of main rare soviet chips used in the synth, that you can see on the last picture..."  Like little robots ready to explore.

The algorithm and some code comes from this project http://www.scienceprog.com/avr-dds-si... which in turn is derived from http://www.myplace.nu/avr/minidds/

The sound uses a squarewave bank of overtones which is fed to a guitar amp with flanger and reverb. I plan to upgrade to polyphonic operation by having several ATtiny2313 for each voice."
