New Mattson Mini Modular Eurorack Express - Expression Pedal Interface Module

via Mattson Mini Modular on Facebook

"I've done it. I'm releasing a Mattson-branded Eurorack module.

Actually, I have been asked by many people about my Handicon module. I designed the Handicon years ago and my WIKI page about it has the second highest hit count of all of my modules. But, I could never figure out an economical way to manufacture the hand controller.

I've used the circuit to provide pedal interfaces for a variety of custom projects.
People have been pressing me to provide this as a pedal interface in Eurorack.

So, I did. Here is the prototype and it will be in production soon.
I'm calling it: "Express"
Catchy, huh?

I scaled it to 4-channels. Up to four, 3rd party expression pedals can be plugged into the pedal interface and be utilized to provide foot pedal control of CVs or audio into your Eurorack modular system. Any available 3rd party expression pedal can be utilized if it uses a TRS plug. Such as the M-Audio and Moog expression pedals.

I use it for pitch bends, vibratos, audio "volume" control for specific patches and even use it to change the key of a sequence on our sequencer from a major to a minor scale in real time

Division 6 will be adding this to their catalog and provide a sales point for everybody.

Division 6 will be displaying the prototype at the Muffwiggler store grand opening in Portland, OR on 5-24-14. Drop on by if you read this before that date.

Here's a couple of pix of the prototype. Hand made by yours truly"

"The Cwejman RG-6 Random Generator module can be used for a slew limiting effect:

Set RG-6 Clock to Audio rate. Lower clock rates will produce a sample and hold effect.

Patch external pitch CV through the 'EXT SIGNAL' input of the RG-6.

Patch 'LOW' , 'NORMAL' or 'HIGH RANDOM PROBABILITY SPREAD to FM input of oscillator or sound source. The choice of distribution influences the Frequency range for slew & CV modulation. Adjusting the SIGNAL SAMPLING LEVEL "tunes" the EXT SIGNAL CV.

Adjust Slew Rate to desired effect.

XILS-lab breathes virtual life into prototyped EMS VCS4 analogue matrix modular monster

"'XILS 4: a life-changing tool... absolutely 100 percent indispensable modular heaven!'

- Anthony J. Resta (record producer and multi-instrumentalist)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software company XILS-lab is proud to announce availability of XILS 4 — an authentic software emulation of the legendary VCS4, a ‘dual VCS3’ analogue matrix modular synthesizer prototyped by EMS back in 1969, but never commercially released — as of May 19...

EMS (Electronic Music Studios), a British company founded by the pioneering Peter Zinovieff, made musical history in 1969 with its introduction of the VCS3, the first portable synthesizer commercially available anywhere in the world. Its innovative modular matrix-based patchboard dispensed with the telephone exchange-like cabling of other (much larger) modular systems in favour of making connections with (removable) coloured pins, so it could be comfortably housed in a small wooden (solid afrormosia) cabinet.

Needless to say, the (hi)story of the EMS VCS3 is well documented, with XILS-lab later playing its part in resurrecting its still-sought-after sound with its cost-conscious and award-winning XILS 3 software emulation for Mac (OS X 10.4 and above) and PC (Windows 7, Vista, and XP) proving popular with both first-time buyers beginning a wonderfully in-depth journey into the wonderful world of modular synthesis and also seasoned synth explorers, including renowned sound designer Richard Devine and original VCS3 aficionado Tim Blake (Hawkwind), and even Peter Zinovieff himself, who commented kindly: “A great step forward!”

Not so well documented, though, is the stuff of legend: the 1969-vintage VCS4 was EMS designer David Cockerell’s so-called ‘Live Performance Module’, comprising two VCS3s sat side by side, together with a five-octave keyboard, a mixer, and a signal-processing unit, all housed in a single wooden cabinet. Only one prototype was ever produced, its ear-opening sounds lost in the sands of time... until now, that is!

By being based on two intricate and interacting VCS3 (‘Synthi’) cores — following in the fanciful footsteps of its one-off analogue ancestor to a tee, XILS-lab’s XILS 4 favourably emulates EMS’ VCS4. Indeed, those two cores can be set to work side by side or operate in serial (with one feeding the other). Each and every module on one side can be used to modulate or feed anything on the other side with stunning sound possibilities plus weird and wonderful effects readily available in abundance as a direct result. That said, XILS 4 shows its true 21st Century colours by also allowing amount settings to be individually applied to each patch ‘pin’. Providing patchboard power par excellence to an already special soft synth shows that there is clearly so much more to XILS 4 than solely emulating vintage hardware — rare as the vintage hardware in question clearly is. Little wonder, then, that XILS 4 is billed by its creator as being the Ultimate Analog Matrix Modular Synthesizer!

XILS-lab has sought to take things severals steps further still by coupling those cores with the SEQUENCER 256 module, inspired by EMS’ trailblazing Synthi Sequencer 256 namesake. Needless to say, this three-layer sequencer with analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue converters to enable digital processing of control voltages to drive multiple analogue synthesizers or multiple parameters with storage of up to 256 ‘events’ was well ahead of its time when released in 1971. Here in the virtual world, XILS-lab has well and truly transported it to the present day with three independent layers, slew rates, and recording modes, together with added abilities like sequencer layers acting as modulation sources in a dedicated SEQ MATRIX — matchless, even by today’s most sophisticated DAW standards!

So is that all? No, not at all! Adding a second ‘pin matrix’, two additional envelopes, an LFO, comprehensive SAMPLE AND HOLD module, and VOLTAGE PROCESSOR, plus several new input modules — including GATE, ENVELOPE FOLLOWER, and PITCH TRACKER — means that there are hundreds of additional connections available to the discerning synthesist set on exploring XILS 4 to the full as a superlative soft synth or as a powerful effects processor plug-in in its own right. The fact that there are over 1,140 possible connections per patch makes for a literal lifetime of programming possibilities that will surely far outlast the host computer concerned, though those in need of a helping hand have easy access to almost 700 professionally-programmed presets from world-renowned sound designers, including the complete XILS 3 factory library and over 350 presets specifically designed for XILS 4. A selection of tutorial-style patches are also available to help users seeking to take their first tentative steps towards scaling the heady heights of this mountainous modular monster of a soft synth!

Simply put, with a whole host of modules and associated far-reaching functionality — for starters, 12 aliasing-free oscillators, grouped in six pairs with wave-shaping and hard sync — yesteryear’s impossibilities have become today’s possibilities with XILS 4... a great step forward, indeed! A giant leap for modular synthesis software, some might say.

XILS 4 is available to purchase as an eLicenser or iLok copy-protected virtual instrument and effects plug-in for an introductory discounted price of €149.00 EUR (rising to €179.00 EUR on June 17, 2014) from the XILS-lab web store here: http://www.xils-lab.com/pages/STORE.html (Note that this time-limited offer also includes the XILISTICS sound bank with 160-plus presets worth €25.00 EUR, plus a free USB-eLicenser copy-protection dongle!)

XILS 3 owners can upgrade to XILS 4 for an introductory price of €29.00 EUR (rising to €49.00 EUR on June 17, 2014). XILS 4 can be directly downloaded as a 32- and 64-bit-compatible virtual instrument and effects plug-in for Mac (AAX, AU, RTAS, VST) and Windows (AAX, RTAS, VST) from here: http://www.xils-lab.com/pages/XILS4_Download.html

"ARP Odyssey Mk2
Model number 2811
Serial number 0044

As can be seen from the photos, this ARP Odyssey has been modified by the removal of the keyboard and the addition of 3.5mm jack sockets for extra CV and audio inputs and outputs. There is also a round multi pin connector fitted, but I don't know what it is for. Possibly for the removed keyboard, which I don't have. It was already modified when I got it about 8 years ago in a part exchange deal. I assume that it was done by Analogue Solutions, as there is one of their stickers on the front panel. Cosmetically, it is not brilliant with quite a few scratches and chips to the panel paintwork. It has not been serviced or any parts replaced since I have had it. When I got it a few sliders were stiff and a couple of them were crackling. So I opened it up and lubricated all sliders, switches and sockets with contact cleaner, and it has been working fine since then. As far as I can tell everything is working properly. I have played it with a midi keyboard with a midi to CV/gate convertor, and recently I checked it with a QuNexus keyboard.

Internally, it didn't look too bad, although not very clean. it looks like it might have been poorly stored as the solder joints looked dull and some metal parts are rusty.

The labelling on the fitted sockets could do with replacing as they are starting to peel off and the print is fading. Here is a list of the sockets. All socket are working. I checked them using my Eurorack setup.

New Analog Bytes tbDSP Eurorack Module with Knob Touch Detection

"tbDSP is a modular synth that’s currently under development. It will be available in 2014. Here is a picture of the current prototype (remember, the front panel aesthetics and screen graphics aren’t finalized yet)"

"With tbDSP we set out to create not only the most powerful DSP synthesizer platform in Euro, but also a platform that could evolve over time. At the heart of this goal is the ability to add functionality and make improvements once the module has been released into the wild. To support this, we put a USB port on the module and developed PC and Mac applications so that when a new idea pops into our heads, we can share it with everyone that owns the module. Likewise, it will allow users to influence development.

Microchip PIC32 - USB, Firmware Update, and housekeeping

The FPGA processes audio at sampling rates as fast as 98MHz, and the SHARC can compute over 24,000 1024-point FFTs per second."

You can find additional details and follow progress at http://tbdsp.tumblr.com. The following are a couple of videos and audio demos.

"My appreciation of the old Atari POKEY sound chip compelled me to recreate its guts in a tbDSP engine. Some might argue that doing so is a waste of perfectly good DSP, but I saw an opportunity to make an engine with features that I wish the original chip included. The new engine is called POKE. I want to cover two of the new features here."

Chvrches: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Published on May 12, 2014 NPR Music ·549 videos

Update: make that ALTO, not LTO. Only one previous post on MATRIXSYNTH. Synths include the DSI Tempest, Mopho x4, and Teenage Engineering OP-1.

Update 2 via Chris Haynes in the comments: "That ALTO is controlling a Moog Minitaur for the bass drones."

"For a brief moment, I imagined hearing Chvrches perform "Recover" or "Gun" with a couple of acoustic guitars and perhaps a shaker or two. And, though these songs would surely stand up well when broken down and bared, I'm thrilled that Chvrches came with a small arsenal of synthesizers to perform a few highlights from last year's album The Bones of What You Believe.

Seeing these now-familiar earworms executed up close was nearly as much a campfire moment as an acoustic set might have been, except the flames burned brighter. Lauren Mayberry's voice felt powerful and vulnerable, while Iain Cook and Martin Doherty kept those memorable synth lines bubbling underneath. The result works as a perfect introduction to the Glasgow trio, but also a reaffirmation of talent and longevity for those already love with the band. --BOB BOILEN

Devil Fish-Controls the Modular

Published on May 19, 2014 TB-303 Devil Fish·19 videos

"A live jam of a track called 'Sparrows HEAD' by Random Knobhead.
MIDI, AUDIO, CV signal routing-
To start in some sort of logical order, I will begin with the master tempo and transport commander:-
Yamaha RS7000 is sending MIDI (100bpm) to the Roland TB-303 Devil Fish and the Elecktron Analog four. The RS7000 has percussive parts playing from internal synth voices and is not sending out note data.
The Analog four is sending clock pulses to the Roland SH-101 and the TipTop Trigger Riot modules Ext Clock Ins, The A4 is playing a panning percussive pseudo random sound, and has the SH-101 running through its Reverb unit, it is also sending a gate pulse on the first of a 64 step pattern to the Trigger Riots Reset in.
The SH-101 is playing an internal sequence.
The Trigger Riot is sending (the A4s) Clock out to the Make Noise Woggle Bug and Echophon modules, along with Clock Divisions to the TipTop BD808 module, and Clock Division Pulses to the Echophons Freeze in, and to the Devil Fishes 2 Dynamic Bank Switching inputs alternating it between 4 or 8 internal patterns depending on if 1 or 2 patterns were selected.
The Devil Fish is sending CV to the Make Noise DPO modules second oscillator (the first is an FM source for the second which is also being FMed by the Make Noise Woggle bug modules 'smooth' random out), the Devil Fish is sending gate out to the 4MS Pingable Envelope Generator which is opening the Make Noise QMMG (DPOs channel after its filtered through the Intelligel Korgasmatron module), the Devil Fish is also sending its Accent out to the TipTop Hats808 modules Open Hat. Devil Fishes Audio out is through the Boss SD-2 distortion pedal(not used) and through the A4(with no effect).
The iPhone is not synced but still set to 100bpm it has the NodeBeat app playing a simple melody into the Echophon which has the Pitch knob modulated by the Random out of the Woggle Bug.
All Audio from the modules is routed to the QMMG then to the mixer.
The Korg Kaoss Pad 2 is a send effect for the mixer and is used to 'Stutter' the RS7000 and Modular together and separately.

Published on Mar 15, 2014 Mono Jono·2 videos

"A recording of some Jammin'

On Lead:
Intellijel Dixie
Bubblesound VCOb (into VCF sub osc input).
Blue Lantern Asteroid VCF
Rohren (tube) VCA (for distortion)
ADDAC sys 101
Mode Machines SID

On Bass:
Intellijel Dixie
Dinsync.info VCF 303 (with overdrive cranked up)
Asteroid VCA stage

On Drums:
Vermona DRM

Arranged by: Analogue Solutions Oberkorn sequencer

Synth mixed by:
Pittsburgh M3

A couple of short techno tunes.
All sounds from the Asteroid VCF (Dixie, VCOb and ADDAC 101) are fed through a Rohren (tube VCA).
The VCF 303 is fed a squeare from the Dixie and is run through the VCA on the Asteroid VCF. A CV channel from the Oberkorn is fed to the VCF 303s CV in, which causes the filter to fully open up (if you were wondering why it disappears into a tweeting budgie!
The above are sequenced by the Oberkorn.
The Sid is used for a couple of glitchy 8 bit sounds.

Really this is just part of a jam and is not a professional job."

Modular synth Jam (electro/tech) feat VCF303 and BL Asteroid VCF

Published on Apr 17, 2013 Mono Jono·2 videos

"A simple patch to show some analogue music and some twiddling as opposed to patch complexity.
We have:
Oberkorn (off shot) CV channel A to Pittsburgh M3 mutilple stage and onto Dixie vpo in.
and VCOb vpo in.
Oberkorn CV channel B to Blue Lantern Asteroid VCF FM in.
Oberkorn gate channel 1 to Doepfer a140 in.
Doepfer a140 out to DIN Sync.info VCF 303 Accent in.
Oberkorn gate channel 2 into the ADDAC 101 trigger in.
Dixie SQ to VCF303 in.
DIxie pulse to Asteroid VCF in (VCF303 out goes through the asteroids separate VCA, but is left open.
VCOb pulse to Asteroid VCF sub oct in.
Analogue solutions LFO NZ triangle into Asteroid VCF CV mod in. This is attenuated by the polarised larger lower pot. Clockwise opens it up and anti inverts the signal.

All drums courtesy of the Vermona DRM (off shot),

This kicks off with a bit of electro and about 3/4 through (rather clumsiliy) I disconnect the dixie and the vcob from the asteroid vcf and patch in the ADDAC 101 which is fed into a new audio channel with a smidge of delay. This is modulated by the lfo nz into the asteroids fm in and twiddled by me!

Apologies for the quality and half my stuff being out of shot. This is my first vid and first attempt at synching video and audio (it goes a bit pear shaped towards the end and ill learn how to merge 2 video sources (from the mob sat on the euro case pointing at the Oberkorn and Vermona DRM) soon!
Im also a "beginner" at precision patching!

Many thanks,"

MODULAR SYNTH JAM #4 - Dirty Electro / Techno

Published on May 19, 2014 DivKidMusic·25 videos

"Jam number 4 in our series of videos we're using as 'extended vines'. If you use Vine search DivKid and check our videos there. We post all sorts of production and modular bits but 6 seconds isn't enough for some patches, so here's an extended video with a dirty electro / techno patch.

Drums are single shot sounds just sequenced in the computer and the rest is all modular.

As always feel free to comment and like, don't forget subscribe for more videos coming every week."
