Borderlands Granular V2 New Features Overview

"Borderlands Granular is a new musical instrument for exploring, touching, and transforming sound with granular synthesis, a technique that involves the superposition of small fragments of sound, or grains, to create complex, evolving timbres and textures.

The software enables flexible, real-time improvisation and is designed to support interaction with sonic material on a fundamental level. The user is envisioned as an organizer of sound, simultaneously assuming the roles of curator, performer, and listener. Gestural interaction and visual feedback are emphasized over knobs and sliders to encourage a sculptural approach to making music.

Create, drag, and throw pulsing collections of grains over a landscape of resizable audio files, dynamically and polyphonically sampling the waveforms beneath your fingertips. The iPad's built-in accelerometer may also be employed to shape sound with gravity.

Borderlands comes ready to play with default sample content included, but you may also load and export your own sounds via Audiobus, AudioShare, and real time input from the mic or external audio interfaces. Recordings made within the app may be imported on the fly for layers-upon-layers of granulation.

It is also possible to improvise alongside the app - touches and parameters may be recorded, looped, stored, and duplicated. Entire configurations of clouds, sounds, and automation can be saved into presets, or 'scenes,' that may be recalled at a later time, allowing Borderlands to seamlessly transition between the studio and the stage."

Befaco Workshops

If you are interested in setting up a DIY workshop in your city or event, Befaco has you covered. Here are the details on their workshops via the Befaco workshop page (or you can contact them directly here):

"Our workshops consist of a working group in which each makes its own complete machine or some modules for a existing machine.

They are free workshops in the sense that everyone works at their own pace in the module you want from those available at that time.

In each workshop you will receive a kit with a step by step manual and all necessary parts .

You do not need any experience in electronics and we started from scratch , teaching welding and follow the manual like a sort of electronic puzzle .

FAQ:
- Do we need knowledge of electronics?

No. It starts from absolute zero , even if it is good before going to the shop to try to read a little about it and be patient . Note that a modular synth is not a “Just one weekend project”

- What modules should I choose?

This depends on each.

Basic modules that everyone will need are the power supply, Power bus and the output module and from there … well all depends if you already have a system to which you want to add modules or want to start to make you one

- How many modules I can make in one workshop?

A normal rate , you can mount one or maybe two workshop modules , depending on their complexity and your experience / skill. If you want to do more modules and do not want to wait for the next workshop you can buy kits to continue working at home, and bring them to you to test at the next workshop .

- How many seats are in each workshop and how can I reserve one?

When booking the place will have to reserve the kit or kits you want to build .
The reservation is made through this mail. (Remember to indicate on what city is the workshop you like)

- Case / rack for modules is supplied ?

Currently we have two models of Cabinet/rack and a starter kit including box, power supply and power bus .

Also if you want to hop a box on your own, we have aluminium rails and other hardware necessary to place the modules in it and can advise on how to build a box according to your idea.

- Will I need to bring tools ?

Ideally bring pen, multimeter and a decent soldering iron.

If you don’t have these tools we can borrow some during the workshop.

- How much is the workshop? The price of the workshop is included in the price of the modules that you supply . This price varies from city to city depending on the cost of travel and accommodation as well as the conditions that contribute to host the workshop in each case.

If you want to check the price of a particular city please contact us

- What if the modules do not work? - How many workshops are enough to learn how to build synthesizers ? say that three lifetimes are not enough, but you’ll learn enough to distinguish components , soldering, printed circuits and understand the basics (and you will build your own modules is clear ) . The workshops are resolved and raise questions but if you want to pursue the subject will have to jump completely in to it and putting in hours on your own. - Would it be possible that workshops in my city? It is possible if you can find enough people to make it worth going (about 15 people). We are open to suggestions so if you want to organize a workshop in your city please contact us."

New MFOS Quad Timbre Bank

Quad Timbre Bank Presentation Published on Mar 29, 2015 Ray Wilson

"The MFOS Quad Timbre Bank began as a fixed filter bank but evolved into more. The PC board hosts four 12dB/Oct resonant VCFs and four VCAs. Front panel controls for each VCF/VCA pair include cut-off frequency, resonance and output level. In addition the cut-off frequency of each VCF and the output level of each VCA is able to be modulated independently with control voltage. The external CV modulation is linear in nature and not logarithmic so the filters are not intended to be 1V/Oct tone generators in sine oscillation mode."

Features
Four complete 12dB/Oct VCFs (linear CV response)
Four complete VCAs (linear CV response)
Three Filters: Band-Pass/Low Pass Selectable
One Filter: Band-Pass/High Pass Selectable (Low-pass output available)
Board supports use in several configurations
All filters resonant & sine capable
Supports Percussion Synth possibilities

You can find samples and additional info on the MFOS website here.

"100% Fully Fuctional with no noisey scratchy pots.

A little marvel capable of some great sounds and effects. This one has had a bit of a face lift. The original top surface began to show signs of rust so i sanded the surface right back to the steel and added decals instead. I think it now looks a bit like a synthi in styling!. All knobs intact including the coloured inserts. Jen logo and rear black paint left original. Capable of some great squelchy basslines and effects. Incorporates a wicked resonant filter. For more information, google SX1000."

Its pretty much like new other than that chip. Comes with the case and plug and both are in fine condition."

"Analogue Solutions Liepzig S pure analogue synthesizer. This unit is in excellent condition with the exception of a very small bend on the bottom left hand corner of the unit. This is hardly noticeable and in no way affects the ability to rack mount this unit(see picture). Also this unit is in perfect working order only being used in a smoke free home studio. PSU included."

"This was one of the last Prophet models made by Sequential Circuits and came late in their existance so it was one of the first analogue synthesizers to feature MIDI functions. It sounds great. There are so many workable sounds within the 600 and plenty of control over them too. Patch memory is available so you can save your sounds, but I would probably recommend putting a new battery in there and updating the unit.

Before listing, I plugged it in and tested all the functions. She works great and sounds amazing..."

A Podcast Interview with SynthTech / MOTM's Paul Schreiber

Update: see here for the full set of interviews.

---

via Art + Music + Technology

"If you would give me an hour and ask me how I'd want to spend it, talking with Paul Schreiber would be at the top of my request list. I appreciate his sense of humor, his strong feelings about thing, and his willingness to share openly about any subject that might come to mind. I also appreciate that, by having been a 'hobby' synth maker, he has always been able to stay at arm's length from the grittier side of the industry.

Some of this podcast covers similar ground to my first discussion with him (podcast 13), but as is the case with Paul, each discussion about something reveals new information. And Paul is a treasure trove of information, having been there at the crusty beginnings of the new modular revolution.

Enjoy, and let your friends know about the podcast!

Wall of SIMMONS Electronic Drum Brains on MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Mar 28, 2015 Gerald Stevens

"My collection of SIMMONS electronic drums: the legendary SDS 8, the under-recognized SDS 400, and the Digital Clap Trap. Fantastic analog drum goodness. I'm selling 'the wall' over on Matrixsynth classifieds. I just don't [use] them enough."

via MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS

"I'm selling my "wall of SIMMONS" - fantastic analog drum machines. If you're looking at this, you're already familiar with what they are - knobby, bassy, awesome. Brains only (no drum-pads - but includes a midi interface). Priced less than equivalent set on e-bay. Comments on condition:

SDS 8 - missing one blue knob cap - light surface rust here and there, and a few scratches (visible in pictures). Functions / sounds fantastic. A beast!

SDS 400 - (personal favorite) - great shape. Missing two rubber "feet" - get them from digikey if you want (not hard to replace). This one is packed with CEM3394 goodness - more versatile than the SDS 8, and 100% analog too unlike other later models. The "second skin" (ring mod?) The chips alone are worth $200 - they're used in the Doepfer Dark Energy and other synths.

Digital Clap trap - Fantastic shape - fantastic sound. You really need this for your 80's double clap.

MIDI SDS - a simple 8 channel midi (CH6) interface. It can't trigger all 10 voices that I'm selling, but close enough. Nice thing about this unit is that a sustained note sends a sustained trigger to the SDS, allowing super-long analog notes to be played on the SDS 8. Just play staccato notes if you want drum hits to sound like drum hits and not the mothership's engines roaring.

These are used - and sold AS IS. Video shows that they're working well. Buyer pays actual shipping. US only - they weigh a bit. I'll keep shipping as low as possible, while packing very well."
