Evaton Technologies SDIY MDRONE Kit Announced at Knobcon 2015

"Evaton Technologies announced the upcoming SDIY MDRONE kit at Knobcon 2015 this weekend. The SDIY MDRONE is a DIY kit consisting of a bare PCB and parts kit, that implements a 3-oscillator standalone desktop drone machine with adjustable bandpass filter and filter overdrive.

Kit features:
* 3 independent square wave oscillators (pot-controlled, not CV)
* On/Off switch for each oscillator
* Adjustable filter bandwidth (Q)
* Adjustable filter center frequency (Fc)
* Selectable filter overdrive On/Off, which creates gritty, dirty distortion in the filter.
* Volume knob
* Line out, with build option for Eurorack-level audio.
* 9V battery operation, with very low current drain; perfect for electro-busking
* Assembly manual with theory of operation; great for educational users
* Patch points for circuit-bending, and additional hints in assembly manual for more circuit bending ideas

Construction is all thru-hole components, and can be assembled in an evening by experienced kit builders, or over several evenings for those just getting started in DIY.

Evaton showed the SDIY MDRONE at Knobcon, constructed in a see-thru pencil case. Final kit will be available as either PCB + parts, or as PCB + parts + pre-drilled case (production case is not see-thru).

Available Fall/Winter 2015. MSRP TBD, but will be under $100 for the full PCB + parts + case option, and less for the PCB + parts option.

Watch www.evatontechnologies.com/music-products for further details in the next few weeks."

"Looks good. Was recently serviced but still has a bit of a noise issue. The highest C# for polyphonic string voices sounds strange (lacks the same envelope as the rest of the keys). See video for demonstration. Missing one lid "cleat". A chunk is missing from right side foam end piece. See pictures.

Includes keyboard cover and new AC adapter.

If you're looking for those lush chunky, crunchy analog string sounds, this is the best keyboard for that."

"Looks beat. The ends have been taped and glued. But, all features, functions and keys work. Occasionally the leftmost C# will not work for poly voices. I've found that tugging the wire bundle immediately to the left for the keybed usually gets it to work again. There is probably a loose connection somewhere. Someone added a three-way switch which seems to combine the poly voices (see video).

Includes keyboard cover and all four feet.

This is like a combination ARP Pro-Soloist and simple polyphonic string machine. But, it has its own character especially when you add the envelope wah effect, portamento and vibrato."

"An ambient track made entirely using a Sequential Circuits Prophet 600, all hand-played - no midi, sequenced parts use onboard sequencer.

Recorded and arranged in Apple Logic Pro, some light limiting on master, reverb from Valhalla VintageVerb.

Speech is from a public domain recording of The Sleeper Awakes by H.G.Wells"

An Interview with Barry Schrader

Hi everyone! As you know Barry Schrader will be giving his farewell concert at CalArts on September 26. The following is the beginning of my interview with him. I opted to post the questions and answers as they come in.  New QAs will get a new post so you do not miss them and they will be added to this post so we have one central post for the full interview. This should make it easier for all of us to consume in our busy lives, and it will allow you to send in any questions that may come to mind during the interview process.  If you have anything you'd like to ask Barry, feel free to send it in to matrixsynth@gmail.com.  This is a rare opportunity for us to get insight on a significant bit of synthesizer history, specifically with early Buchla systems, and I'd like to thank Barry for this opportunity. Thank you Barry!

Barry Schrader on KXLU's Trilogy, Wednesday, September 16

Barry Schrader, who's upcoming farewell performance is set for Saturday, September 24, will be sharing a selection of his works on KXLU's Trilogy program this coming Wednesday, September 16. Two electronic works featuring the Buchla 200 Electric Music Box will be featured.

Details follow:

Time: Wednesday, September 16 at 9:00 PM PDT (Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 4:00 AM UTC (GMT))

Place: KXLU 88.9 FM, Los Angeles, streaming on the web

For this show, I’ve selected a variety of works of mine spanning a 45-year period, most of which are not commercially available. The first will be a student work from 1968 for soprano and piano, Signature for Tempo, based on the poem cycle of the same name by Archibald MacLeish, with Maurita Phillips-Thornburgh, soprano, and the late Leonid Hambro on piano.

"Next will be two electronic works composed on the Buchla 200 (Electric Music Box) system."

"The first of these analog works will be the complete Death of the Red Planet Suite, featuring music from the 1973 film and second will be Moon-Wings from Moon-Whales and other Moon-Songs (1982-1983) based on poems by Ted Hughes."

"The second movement, Jig, from Dance Suite for Harp and Computer (1987), composed for and performed by Susan Allen will follow. This is presented as a tribute to Susie, who passed this September 7th."

"Finally, I’ll present two more recent computer music works, Monkey’s Magic Dance - Jumping Buddha’s Palm from Monkey King (2005-2007) [see this post here on MATRIXSYNTH for some details on the initial release], and Chinese Kaleidoscopes, from The Barnum Museum (2009-2012) [see this post], based on the short story by Steven Millhauser."

"One of Martin Hannett's Transcendents No 6 in it's original flight case, and fully working- Hannett first used Transcendents in 1978 on Durutti Column and Joy Division records. This is probably one of the best from Hannett's collection. Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division 1979 featured a Transcendent as did The Return of The Durutti Column. Hannett pioneered the use of synths on punk records and created the Manchester sound. He also worked his magic on The Happy Mondays U2 and The Stone Roses, Nico, Pauline Murray and John Cooper Clarke. Will include a copy of Hannett's manual for his Transcendents and a certificate of provenance"

Here's an interesting bit of synth history.  Atari ST programming software for the Roland D-50 by Steinberg. I believe this is the first time it has ever been featured on the site.  Steinberg was founded in 1984, the Atari ST came out in 1985, and the D-50 was available from 1987 - 1989. This software isn't listed on Steinberg's list of released software on wikipedia.
