As it was foretold. Korg Prophecy vs Eventide H8000

Published on Mar 3, 2019 Frequency Manipulator

"The classic Korg Prophecy synthesiser with the almighty Eventide H8000 effects beast. I recently plugged the Prophecy back in. It is a well specified instrument. Unique oscillator sources, waveshaping, two filters, plenty of modulation. About four tracks of prophecy into verbs and pitch shifters.

Moog Sonic Six mk2 vintage analog synthesizer + handbook + brochure

"Up for sale is a hard to find vintage Moog Sonic Six synthesizer. It's the later version with 4-pole Moog ladder filter which has the fattest sound. In our opinion the Sonic Six is the best sounding portable vintage Moog ever made. It's really, really an amazing synth!

This Sonic Six is been serviced in June 2018. The service report is part of the sale. Everything is working fine. Cosmetically it's in very nice condition as well. All the original knobs are there, the front panel is extremely clean, the keys are looking good and so on. The hardcase has signs of use: some scratches, wear and tear and the latches are have little rusty spots on them. Please check all the photos to get a complete overall impression of the condition.

The brochure (1974) and instruction book by Thomas L. Rhea (1972) are included in the sale. The Sonic Six is working on 230v. A power cord with European plug is included. The serial number is: 1653."

"more about - http://vtol.cc/filter/works/Poise-d

Poise→[d] is a hybrid installation that uses chemical and physical reactions to control its behaviour and sound synthesis. The installation consists of the main control unit and three balancing robots. The main control unit has three core systems where the reactions occur, with everything analysed by a computer algorithm using cameras.

This project is based on self-organising structures viewed from several different angles. All the three robots are connected to the main control unit and represent through sound and movement one of the three processes that are happening. The first robot is connected to a sound/mechanical process, the second one to a thermodynamic reaction, and the third to a chemical reaction. Taken together, they create a new and more complex system, as they affect each other through the movements of robots and the main algorithm. To a certain extent, this hybrid system consisting of robotised kinetic objects and chemical/physical reactions is symptomatic of pre-biotic chemical evolution. Another important aspect is the use of Belousov-Zhabotinsky’s chemical reaction - owing to its complexity and singularity, fascinating studies were conducted on cybernetics and some scientists were even enthused to create a chemical computing machine. In this project, the reaction is the most important component of the algorithmic process of the entire installation."

E-MU Emulator - Serial #000A (tenth) - serviced + media

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"It's hard to know where to start with this. First off, Emulator I machines are incredibly rare - I think something like 600 were made in total.

This instrument - well - is the tenth one ever made! The first machine went to Stevie Wonder, the next went to Captain, of "Captain and Tenille". From there, five Emulators were then sold to The Residents. This is believed to be one of these instruments.

I emailed Dave Rossum, and he says;

'I remember the Emulator 1's serial numbers were in hexadecimal, so this is serial number 10. I also remember that we used the Wildcard ROM when users had more than one E1, so they could use their disks to boot any machine.

I'm guessing this was one of the four we sold to The Residents. On the web they say their first one was serial #5. I have a vague recollection that the Residents didn't have their machines modified, but I have no certainty that's true.

Alternatively, it might have been a "demo" unit we used at E-mu and some employee bought at one of our old stuff auctions... The serial number 000A does sound vaguely familiar as some special unit.

Best,
--Dave R'

So there you have it. This machine has been gone over by a professional tech, and is working as it should. Here are the details;
The original floppy drive has been cleaned and calibrated.
The "Pratt-Read" keyboard has been rebushed, and contacts adjusted and cleaned.
Minor repairs to the power supply.
Synth has been tested and calibrated.
This machine does come with over 100+ 5¼" disks, many of which are original Emulator sample media. See photos. Note that it also comes with an original "Wildcard ROM" which will allow it to record and play any E-mu Emulator media. And unusually, it does not have the "ugly mod", which makes it very unusual indeed.

It is immensely heavy, and I'd rather local pickup / deliver anywhere in the Bay Area."

*IMPORTANT*
-the envelope lamp stopped working. this has had ZERO effect on the actual functioning of the envelope—just no fun flashing lights. i'm sure a suitable tech could fix it very easily. has made no difference in practice (actually made me use my ears instead of my eyes ;) )
-there is a minor fracture in one section of the plastic enclosure. again, ZERO effect on the instrument itself. included several close-up photos for full disclosure. not noticeable at all until you purposefully "pop" the fractured section out.
-the joystick stops functioning when the range knobs are turned past around 9"

Thomas Synti 1055 (Moog Satellite). Rare Vintage Analogue Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Incredibly rare Thomas Synti 1055 Monophonic Analogue Synthesizer. For those that don't know, this is basically an improved version of the Moog Satellite. The Thomas Organ Company acquired the rights from Moog for the Satellite in 1973 and this was the result - it uses the same internal boards as the original Moog version. Thomas moved the position of the paddle switches, and lengthened the keyboard - which meant deeper bass.

I have to say this is by far one of the best sounding vintage analogue synths that i've ever owned. It can sound really creamy and fluid, but also really edgy and fractured when you engage both modulation and emphasis. It's very playable AND very useable.

This is a definite rarity so you are unlikely to see another one for sale anytime soon, if at all. It has been fully serviced by my regular tech for sale, so you can bid and buy in confidence that you are getting your hands on a rare analogue that is technically sound."

Skyline Forty-Nine P does Mozart (Adagio in C)

Published on Mar 3, 2019 Kris Lennox

I beleive this is the first demo of the Skyline Forty-Nine P on the site. The only other post is this recent auction listing. This is likely the first time many of us are hearing one.

"Not too long ago I picked up this old synth/organ. It wasn't working at all, so I've spent a little time on it/brought it back to life. Great to hear it. I put up an article a few weeks back with photos of the innards (plus manual/schematics etc) - link here - https://krislennox.blogspot.com/2019/...

Reverb was added post.

To the piece: Mozart's KV356 for Glass Harmonica - an instrument invented by Mr. Benjamin Franklin. Have a look on YT and you'll find a live performance of someone playing this piece on Glass Harmonica. Beautiful sound.

The range of the Glass Harmonica is ideal for the synth. Also, being Mozart, there are sections where one can quite easily imagine a different tone (this is common with his piano works, and he often instructed his students to imagine certain parts belonging to certain instruments). I'm utilising the sense of difference within the piece to harness a small selection of tones from the Skyline.

The Skyline can sound very synth-like (i.e when the vibrato & sustain are on) - I'll upload something more 'synth-y' in the near future. Interestingly, it is Farfisa chips under the hood.

I enjoy playing these kind of instruments: no concerns RE voice limits/note stealing. They are also good for technique i.e finger-swapping to maintain a good legato (far less forgiving than piano).

PS I had a look on IMSLP at the Glass Harmonica repertoire: it is quite small, but there are a few sets. I'll maybe take a full set and record it on the Skyline. It would be a very nice way of not only expanding repertoire awareness for any curious listeners, but also giving the Skyline a notable recorded repertoire.

All best (more on this instrument soon)
Kris"

Waveform Research Centre Report of the Past Half Year

Published on Mar 3, 2019 Dennis Verschoor

"The Waveform Research Centre is a studio based in Rotterdam. The setup is just test equipment. Which makes stuff a bit harder and cooler. Basically there are no sequencers, envelope generators and vca's in the studio. And now you probably wonder if you can actually make any music without these? Well there is also other cool stuff which doesn't exist in a (modular) synthesizer. And by learning and using these items to and synth programming knowledge cool stuff can be made. The recordings are done with the iPhone, sorry about that. And the studio is basically available for rent and it's possible to book me with it to teach you stuff."

4 Modules, 8 Cables - AE Modular Synth Patch Challenge 08 #TTNM#TTNM

Published on Mar 3, 2019 The Tuesday Night Machines

"This is an experiment for the AE Modular Patch Challenge #08 :) We were tasked to only use four modules and eight patch wires, which I think worked out quite well ... if you like reverb-drowned, ambient drone music. Haha! PATCH NOTES BELOW + more info here: http://forum.aemodular.com/thread/196...

---------

PixelNoises Synth T-Shirts by The Tuesday Night Machines:
https://shop.spreadshirt.co.uk/pixeln...

---------

Patch Notes:

4 Modules:
VCO, VCO, LOGIC, MULTIFX

8 Wires:
VCO 1 square to VCO 2 CV2
VCO 1 square to LOGIC 1A input
VCO 2 square to VCO 1 CV2
VCO 2 square to LOGIC 1B input
LOGIC NAND to VCO 2 CV
LOGIC AND to VCO 1 CV
LOGIC XOR to MULTIFX input
MULTIFX to MASTER I/O audio out

I set the MULTIFX to Shimmer in Lo-Fi mode and turned just the wet output up at the beginning. Then I play mostly with the VCO pulse width and coarse frequency knobs. The pulse width knob can silence the square wave VCO output when set to max width, so it's a crude way to turn down the volume of the VCO. Of course there is a lot of cross-modulation happening, so there are weird pitch changes, etc. but the Shimmer effect smoothes everything nicely into some kind of ambient drone music :D"

"We have here a limited edition, platinum version of Korg’s 16 voice Analog Synthesizer, The Prologue. Only 5 of these bad boys were ever made for the grand opening of Guitar Center’s flagship store in Hollywood, CA. I’m not too sure what happened to the other 5 seeing as how there is very little information about these online save for a few articles from synth and keyboard magazines. I managed to pick the last one up from the very same store it was created for. I’ve been toying with the idea of selling it for awhile now so I i ally caved and told myself I’d put it out for a couple weeks and if it sells it sells but if not then I’d take it down. It will come with a matching black case that has a placquard of authenticity on it. Synth Britannia

Published on Mar 16, 2012 clr

"Documentary following a generation of post-punk musicians who took the synthesiser from the experimental fringes to the centre of the pop stage.

In the late 1970s, small pockets of electronic artists including the Human League, Daniel Miller and Cabaret Volatire were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard and dreamt of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain.

The crossover moment came in 1979 when Gary Numan's appearance on Top of the Pops with Tubeway Army's Are Friends Electric heralded the arrival of synthpop. Four lads from Basildon known as Depeche Mode would come to own the new sound whilst post-punk bands like Ultravox, Soft Cell, OMD and Yazoo took the synth out of the pages of the NME and onto the front page of Smash Hits.

By 1983, acts like Pet Shop Boys and New Order were showing that the future of electronic music would lie in dance music.

Contributors include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant."

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - In Motion - Modular synthesizer cover

Published on Mar 3, 2019 joeSeggiola

"From The Social Network ‎original soundtrack (2010, The Null Corporation).

I was trying to recreate the easiest parts of my favorite track from The Social Network's OST in my modular system. It soon became an exercise in using all the modules simultaneously. Recorded in February 2019.

Both drum sounds are created feeding signals from MFB OSC-3 into LxD vactrols, which are opened with Maths envelopes; the kick drum is a pitch-modulated triangle wave, the hat is from the white noise output. Intellijel Shifty is used like a gate sequencer to alternate kick/hat triggering. Two segments from Mutable Instruments Stages are used as faders for controlling drums' volume in Veils.

The bass sound is made with the Minibrute 2 using two saw oscillators one octave apart, with the LP filter controlled by an AD envelope from Stages. Pitch CV is manually triggered tapping buttons on the Korg SQ-1 in "step jump" mode; CV Out is sent to the SSF Modbox S&H for tempo quantization and to a slew-limiter made with Stages for slight portamento. The Minibrute mod-wheel is patched to increase the decay time of VCA and VCF envelopes, so it can be used to gradually control legato.

The 64-notes arpeggio is a square wave from MFB OSC-3, sequenced with the Minibrute (whose pitch CV is free to be used since does not control the on-board bass sound) and filtered with Bastl Cinnamon. A button on the second SQ-1 track is used to control Veils to un-mute the arpeggio at will. Digitech Obscura Altered Delay's mix and repeat controls are used to create the messy ending.

The piano-like long notes are pre-recorded in the Morphagene. A "distortion effect" is applied in real-time using the Minibrute's metalizer wavefolder, modulated by Morphagene's envelope follower. The sample doesn't loop, it's triggered using clock divisions.

Everything is mixed and sent through three guitar pedals: OBNE Dark Star for shim reverb, then a little room reverb and a compressor at the end."

"The final movement of J. S. Bach's first violin sonata in G minor, performed on a Moog Sub 37 analog synthesizer. The monophonic nature of this movement lends itself well to a mono-synth. "(c) 2019 by AnalogAudio1

Demo of the string machine / analog synthesizer CRUMAR PERFORMER from 1979. I played it along with a Korg SDD-3000 delay (right channel only). In the intro it was played through a Electro-Harmonix Small Stone phase shifter and a Korg SDD-3000.

This Crumar Multiman is the newer version (B) with the softer (SSM) filter, which I prefer. The earlier version A has a ladder filter. But the difference in sound is not that big like you might think. Anyway, a great string machine with big sounds, but easy to carry around. Used by Duran Duran on 'Girls on film'."
