The Mojave Desert Modular Experiment: Dustin & Takako

Published on Jul 8, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"In the Mojave Desert Modular Experiment, we worked with local artists to create modular systems suited to their own styles and workflows...despite the fact that none of them had ever used modular synths before. Each artist/group had two weeks to get to know their system and prepare a performance.

The second participants in the experiment were Dustin & Takako (Dustin Wong & Takako Minekawa). These two have years of experience improvising together and often combine musical instruments like guitar and keyboards with more experimental sounds from effects and looper pedals used with found objects and other odd sound generators. We built a eurorack system with each of them, both featuring playable touch interfaces, while Dustin's system focused on FM synthesis, and Takako's on physical modeling.

Come by our showroom to try out these systems for yourself, and keep an eye out for more results from the experiment each Monday this month! Read more about Dustin & Takako’s system and get links to his music here: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal..."

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #73: Boehm Dynamic 4x9 - Song 1

Published on Jul 8, 2019 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the Boehm Dynamic 4x9. It's a German FM-synthesizer from mid-80s that were only available as DIY project. It uses 12(!) Yamaha ICs of the type YM2203, which were commonly used in home computers from NEC as well as in arcade games until the early 90s. Each of the ICs has 3 FM-voices for an overall 36 voices 4-part polyphony.

I used for the recording the following FX for the song:
Sony DPS-V77 (for chorus only), Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe, GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated.

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

DSI Prophet REV2 - Sounds & Patches - Analog synth demo | Dave Smith Instruments

Published on Jul 8, 2019 synth4ever

"DSI (Dave Smith Instruments) Prophet REV2 analog synthesizer demo, featuring various sounds and patches. This Prophet REV 2 demo was filmed at Perfect Circuit in Burbank, CA.

The Prophet REV 2 is a modern analog polyphonic synth that comes in 8 or 16 voice configurations. It features analog DCOs with waveshaping, 2-way bi-timbral splits, a low-pass filter, 4 LFOs, extensive modulation matrix, 64-step polyphonic sequencer and 16 step gated sequencer, arpeggiator, 3 envelopes and 61 keys with aftertouch.

The Prophet REV2 is a very versatile analog synth and excels at brassy sounds, pads, leads, arps/sequences and basses. It can also create lovely ambient soundscapes, textures and complex drones thanks to its extensive modulation matrix.

All sounds in this demo are from the DSI Prophet REV2 with no external processing."

AI Synthesis Giving Away One AI010 Switching Attenuator a Day Through July 11

See this post for demos and details on the new AI010 Attenuator. AI Synthesis kits and modules are available at thonk.co.uk and synthcube.com.

From Monday the 8th, through Thursday the 11th of July, AI Synthesis is giving away one kit or built unit on their product page.

The following is the official press release on the availability of the new AI010 Switching Attenuator:

"Portland, OR, USA July 8, 2019 – AI Synthesis has released the AI010 Switching Attenuator in both a built and guaranteed version, as well as in kit and PCB/Panel format. The AI010 Attenuator was a limited run I made for myself, but people wanted them, so here they are. The AI010 has two different attenuator circuits, but they are normalled together, so it can also function as a 1 in, 3 out Multiple. The module allows users to attenuate and control voltage for modules that lack attenuation on a CV input, in only 2HP. Following the tradition of the other eurorack modules, the AI001 Multiple,AI002 Mixer, and AI003 Looping ADSR, the module has a full video how-to build guide. Unlike some DIY companies that focus solely on providing kits, AI Synthesis has an educational mission and our kits and documentation are aimed at those who have never held a soldering iron. PCBS are professionally manufactured, and all panels are aluminum and designed by Grayscale.

From Monday the 8th, through Thursday the 11th of July, I am giving away one kit or built unit on the product page at https://aisynthesis.com/product/eurorack-attenuator/

“In the year 2000, I was in college and obsessed with modular synths, but could barely afford to eat. I knew it was possible to build your own synth, but there wasn’t anyone, or anywhere to turn to for advice. In the past decade, much more information has been published online, and in 2013 I started down my path to DIY modular. Even with all of the information online, there still lacked a single, simple, comprehensive guide for those looking to build their own synthesizer. I want AI Synthesis to be that guide. Prior to building my own synth, I was a dreamer, after building my modular, I felt I had awoken. I want to help others do the same.”
-Abraham Ingle
Founder, AI Synthesis

In addition to providing step by step build instructions, schematics, and circuit explanations, the site also includes a guide for getting started in modular synthesis, and a series of DIY Guides, with information regarding how Resistors actually work, and how to integrate a $26 scope into your Eurorack system."

In this video, I try to experiment with Anglerfish and effect pedals (eq, filter, reverb)."

Automatic Gainsay Synth Demonstration Music

Published on Jul 3, 2019 AutomaticGainsay

"Most of the intro and outro themes used in Automatic Gainsay synthesizer demonstrations are original compositions and performances by Marc Doty where the synth being featured in the demonstration is used to provide all of the elements of the theme.

These themes are usually largely improvised multitrack recordings atop drums provided by live performances, sequenced synthesizer drum sources, or manipulated and edited GarageBand loops.

Here are the Automatic Gainsay synthesizer demonstration themes from 2006 through 2011. Most of these themes focus on a single synthesizer used as the tonal source for the entire theme. The drums are often live performances by Marc Doty or Pat Simmons. Electric guitar is usually provided by Klayton Giese.
