OB6 PADS & KEYS

via Third Man on the Moon

"The OB6 is a very special and unique sounding analogue synthesizer.

With its 12dB state variable filter it is especially well suited for pads and keys. Since the filter is sweepable between low-pass and high-pass, blending in just a tad of high-pass can give you that nice fairy dust pads. Yummie!

To make a great synth special we have recorded the left and right channels separately and detuned them slightly for truly wide stereo sounds on 31 of the 50 patches . (Add a touch of reverb and/or delay and you’ll be floating in space!)

For the recording process we’ve utilized a chain consisting of hi-end solid state and tube Gear. Going thru a passive DI (Jensen Transformers), VP28 Preamp, BT50 EQ, Manley Variable Mu Compressor, Culture Vulture Tube Saturator and finally recorded into our Apogee Symphony MK2 Converter. No digital processing whatsoever as with all of our samples. Resulting in a big and wide stereo spread and warm tone.

The focus of this pack is Pads and Keys but you’ll find Strings, Leads and Basses as well to round things off. Download the free demo version of the OB6 Pads&Keys sample pack here"

DIY voltage controlled Xtal replacement

Published on Sep 19, 2019 juanito moore

Some DIY with Modular for the Masses.

"This is an optional part of the Modular For The Masses reverb module. This adds a voltage-controlled clock to the cheap Chinese digital reverb/effects circuit. With this modification, the reverb effects module can do vibrato, tape-wobble, all the crazy modulation you might want to do.

You can build it!!!

You will need:
PT2399 chip
Ceramic disc 100nF capacitors (get lots they're CHEAP)
Resistors (get a kit or buy 100 each of the most common values)
10uF capacitors
a 5V regulator (the 78L05 I use here isn't powerful enough to run the whole effects module I'm building, so in the final project I'll be using a larger 7805 regulator)
a 100K potentiometer
one NPN transistor, I'm using a 2N3904 (whoops, I accidentally wrote 2N3906 in the video LOL)"

spectral needs

Published on Sep 19, 2019 zack dagoba

"Purity of Buchla. Nothing else in this one - I set up 7 envelopes on the 200 series, being triggered by 7 trigger outs on the 100 series sequencer. The envelopes control 7 bands on the 296 Spectral Processor, giving it a sort of polyphonic note sequence, the source being a mixture of oscillators and noise. This mono signal was then sent to the Dodeca reverb and the 277 delay unit for stereofication"

"Freshly restored Simmons MTM (MIDI / Trigger / CV interface) in excellent working and physical condition with new battery and OLED display.

These are incredibly rare and don't come up very often or in this condition. And, 35 years later, it's still the best way to control your vintage SDSV, SDS7 or other non-MIDI drum modules via MIDI. Especially if you have a Hi Hat module - as no other interface will allow you to control Hi Hat Open / Closed.

This would also pair perfectly with the fully loaded, freshly restored SDSV < SDS 5 > I have listed separately." [just posted]

"Incredibly rare, FULLY LOADED, Vintage Simmons Electronic Drums SDSV < SDS 5 > Mainframe (including insanely rare digital Hi Hat and Cymbal modules!) in freshly restored condition.

Every aspect of this machine has been gone through with a fine-toothed comb and it sounds as good as it looks. All pots have been cleaned and are smooth and noise free. Edge connectors have been re-tinned and receptacles cleaned. Power supply has been checked and puts out a clean +15v and -15v. All knobs, caps, faceplates, etc. have been thoroughly scrubbed. All buttons work perfectly. Trimmers for Presets 3 and 4 all function as expected with none of them too chewed up to fit a screwdriver. Preset 1 has been fine-tuned on all modules, as well."

"Let's get one thing clear: this is an ANTI-DRUG song / video.
The real star in this song is the use of the PAiA 9730 Dual VCF to achieve the pure filter self oscillation to play the 'melody'. This was done by feeding the filter resonance control voltage through a foot controlled volume pedal. In this way the filter oscillation was 'played' with precise control. If you are not familiar with the PAiA 9730, do yourself a favor and check one out. They are one of my very favorite voltage controlled filters. Too many features to go into here, but the PAiA website has a detailed description of this DIY kit.

And don't do drugs!"

Octave CAT SRM Synthesizer | Original 1977 Soundsheet / Flex-Disc

Published on Sep 19, 2019 Alex Ball

"A bit of a different upload this week, but I think it’s good to mix things up.

Whilst working on my documentary about ARP Instruments I got the opportunity to speak to David Frederick (aka Dave Fredericks) who was one of the key people who worked there from 1970 - 1976.

His full role will be told in the film, but in a nutshell, David’s background was as a performer, recording artist, demonstrator and regional sales manager for the Lowrey Organ Company. When one of his friends at a music store took in a strange new invention called the "ARP 2600" in 1970, David was asked to demonstrate it. A certain Mr Pearlman turned up to see his instrument demonstrated live and was impressed enough to snap David up to join him at what was then Tonus Inc.

David was heavily involved in the human engineering, patch books, overlays, soundsheets, point of purchase materials, marketing, demonstration and management of the sales teams and rose to the role of Vice President. He started the NAMM Jam (that still continues to this day) and is also the link between ARP and Eminent which resulted in the famous ARP/Solina String Ensemble that then lead onto the later ARP Omni and Omni II.

Post-ARP David went onto join Octave Electronics who’d released the CAT Synthesizer in 1976. The updated Series Revision Model (SRM) was released in 1977 and that’s where this recording comes from. David sent an original copy he had to me in the post and I asked if I could digitise it and upload it for posterity. So here we go!

There was a little nick in the soundsheet that meant that the very first sentence couldn’t be picked up by the needle but it was '…(missing)… for Octave Synthesizers' and then continued on where this digitised version picks up. I assume it was 'This is Dave Fredericks for Octave Synthesizers' but I can’t be totally sure.

Anyway, here’s an Octave article from Sound On Sound for those who want to delve deeper. https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/...

The Octave posters are taken from the wonderful Retro Synth Ads site:

Thanks for watching!"

He is a vintage synth restoration guru who has restored the Thompson Twins OB-Xa amongst many others. Simon re capped the power supply and recalibrated all 8 voices. "Very rare guitar synth from 1977.
This is the later revision with the tuning pot on the back of the synth. The guitar cable interface and an anvil case are included with it. Overall it's in great condition for a 42 year old synthesizer, all pots and sliders work as far as I can tell. It is missing the vinyl binding on the sides of the synth though, but that's purely cosmetic and the case has no rust and only minimal scratches, there are two small dings but are only noticeable if you hold it up to the light."

Extra is a custom user oscillator, that allows you to have 2 or 3 paraphonic voices per minilogue xd voice. This allows you to play chords with more notes than 4, up to 12 in some cases! You still have the 4 voice limitation of the hardware, but with each note being able to play 2 or 3, a few more sonic possibilities exist!"
