Field Effect Studies by Benge

"The music contained on this album was created using a Moog Modular 3C synthesiser, one of the very few original systems made in 1967. In addition some sounds were originated on a 1975 Moog Polymoog keyboard and then passed through the modular system for further treatment. No other sounds were used on this record, however on occasion a short delay of around 500 milliseconds was applied to one or other side of the stereo signal to provide a spacial dimension to the recording

Several of the pieces made use of the Sequential Controllers, which are modern clones of the Moog design, and, along with the various Sequential Switches and Sequencer Interfaces, can be set up to create some very complex melodic patterns. These can be heard to good effect on the second track “Sequoia”

The Title of the album makes reference to field effects, but I have left it deliberately ambiguous as to which kind of fields are being referred to

"The Dark Energy is a single oscillator monosynth with a 24 db lowpass filter, 2x LFOs, and ADSR and VCA and a nice set of patch points! Perfect introduction to the world of modular synths (patch cables not required for basic operation) or as an ad-on to an existing modular setup. Includes the original power supply and is in great shape."

"Absolutely pristine digital synth, 8 voice polyphonic with incredibly flexible, basically modular voice architecture. Very high-end 96 kHz sound. Way beyond any other digital synth in terms of both flexibility and sound quality, as can be confirmed with so many excellent demos around."

"Very good condition as seen (just a few small scratches), has back panel CV/gate controls. Note: the octave switch had been replaced by a three-position knob, this is actually more robust and easier to use than the original design, for fast range switching while playing live. Has the nicest sounding filter especially at high resonance levels among several whiteface Odyssey’s we've encountered, perhaps because it's been very well calibrated. Hate to see this one go!"

"This is a surprisingly fun and capable quantized CV sequencer and duophonic voice oscillator module. The button combinations to access all features are very quick and easy to learn. In a matter of minutes you can have it playing melodic phrases with pseudorandom variations quantized to the scale/key of your choosing.

I received the bare PCB as a bonus with an order several months ago. I finally got around to ordering the parts I lacked and assembling the module. I'm an experienced builder with 7 years assembling and repairing electronics.

Your order will include a cheat sheet listing all of the module's functions and controls on one page, a power ribbon cable, and your choice of M2.5 or M3 mounting hardware."

Recollection | File Transfer Protocol

Published on Nov 15, 2019 File Transfer Protocol

"Sometimes I feel like I can travel through sound. A singular driving bass note shaking the earth beneath my feet, exciting the atoms and disturbing the continuum. Breaking me free of the physical realm. Opening the filter as the overtones resonate and carry my thoughts and energy elsewhere... upward... reaching out to you over distance, and wrinkling my perception of time.

The color of light blurs my vision between what my eyes see in front of me and what my mind sees deep within. I free myself temporarily of the shapes before me and almost as if focusing on something very close to my eyes, I let the here and now dissolve...

I leave it far behind as I drift. I don’t need to move the knobs or touch the keys. I know you will guide me there. I am a conduit and I open to let you flow through me."

Behringer K-2 Semi-Modular Synthesizer

Published on Nov 15, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"The Behringer K-2 is a modern re-interpretation of one of the greatest monosynths of all time: the Korg MS-20. Introduced in1978, the Korg MS-20 was one of the most affordable monosynths to hit the market...and the K-2 continues this tradition of combining near-infinite flexibility with a budget-friendly price.

The K-2 is a Eurorack-compatible adaptation of the MS-20, rife with potential for patching with itself and external devices. Like the original, it has a howling dual filter, semi-modular patch bay, and an external signal processor for integrating external gear.

In this video, we use the K-2 in conjunction with an Arturia Keystep and Behringer RD-8 to create a range of sounds from melodic keyboard sequences to huge bass lines."

Ambient jam with the Sequential/Oberheim OB-6, Elektron Octatrack MkII, Eventide Space

Published on Nov 15, 2019 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by some time convalescing. It's my first time using the Octatrack for some ambient, droning sounds, and once again, it doesn't disappoint. As before, the Octatrack's scenes are the star of the show, allowing for me to fade in/out tracks, as well as add modulation and effects either by track or on the master. What a beautiful machine.

I've also been pretty keen to give the OB-6 a spin for a while, since I love that Oberheim sound and will never buy the vintage gear. Despite its classic tone, it's got a lot of great modern features... that I don't really take advantage of here. I simply started playing it and this patch (007) sounded so good that I had to record something. Next time.

Elektron Octatrack MkII — samples, track effects, master effects
Sequential/Oberheim OB-6 + Eventide Space — poly synth
Novation SL MkIII — MIDI controller for the OB-6

Written and performed within a 2-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Behringer Pro-1 vs Prophet 6 and Toraiz AS-1

Published on Nov 15, 2019 Starsky Carr

"A look at how close the Prophet 6 is to the Pro-1 demonstrating the sonic similarities and differences between Behringer's Pro-1 and the Pioneer DJ Toraiz AS-1 synth, which is effectively a single voice of the Prophet 6.

It's not a comprehensive comparison .. I've not played with the High Pass or FX or demo'd the additional capabilities of the P6 and Toriaz. This video is purely just to see if they share sonic fingerprints with the Pro-1.

ELEKTRON ANALOG FOUR mk.1 + UNO DRUM // PURE ANALOG

Published on Nov 15, 2019 LESINDES

"This is another episode of PURE ANALOG here with ELEKTRON ANALOG FOUR Mk. 1 groovebox. Although A4 features a digital delay, chorus and reverb I did not use these as all the other on board FX of the synths that are being played hier in PURE ANALOG which is a project to find out and show the qualities of analog synthesizers and eventually also hybrids. And exciting Question is also how contemporary synths like this lush GRP A-2 or EREBUS NYX compare to vintage legends like MINIMOOG or ARP ODYSSEY or ROLAND JUPITER 4 etc. So this piece will be played and performed with different synths in the future track by track recorded in DAW without any equing or otherwise processed in DAW, no add modulation, reverb, saturation or other FX. Only a mastering compressor, EQ and Limiter is used on the sum. So what you hear is completely un-FX-ed material -- almost impossible to find these days!!!"

STG LFO Sync Test

Published on Nov 15, 2019 davidryle

"Suit and Tie Guy Envelope Generator in LFO A mode. This thing loops in SYNC mode with the other sync bus modules to give a wonderfully musical performance tool for rhythm and phrasing.

I used an Ian Fritz DDUVCO and Synthetic Soundlabs VCO throughan Ian Fritz 5 Pulser for the sound sources. An STG Soundlabs Post Lawsuit Filter was used on the SSL vco and a synthesizers.com Q150 ladder filter was used for the DDUVCO part.

A pair of Lexicon dual delays (MX200) added some tape delay DSP effects to the final signal.

The entire STG Soundlabs module suite can be bought from stgsoundlabs.com Check it out!"

FIVE MINUTES WITH - The Schmidt Synthesizer

Published on Nov 15, 2019 sonicstate

"The Schmidt is the stuff of legends, a rarity, under 100 made so far, the brainchild of a single enthusiast, it was first made as a labour of love and previewed a Musik Messe (remember that show?) 2011 by its builder Stefan Schmidt after which it was supported by E:M:C and made into a thing you can buy.

Made in batches of 25, the fourth and possibly last production run is happening now, due to the availability of certain parts. It is still hand built in Germany.

It features four oscillators per voice, with the first three being analog, the fourth a specialized digital one. Three VCF's and 8 part multi-mode.

We know its not cheap, priced at around €18,174 its certainly an investment, but we're glad it exists.
Fortunately for us, there was one at the recent SoundMIT show in Turin, so we got to spend a few precious moments with it. Around 5 as it happens."

Comparing the AN1x, Virus TI, Accelerator, and Radias

Published on Nov 14, 2019 MIDERA

"In this video - I'm just running through some basic comparisons of the Yamaha AN1x, Access Virus TI, Radikal Technologies Accelerator, and Korg Radias. I compare sawtooth and pulse waveforms, then test out the 24db LP filter (note that I believe I may have accidentally used a 12db LP filter on the Virus).

A few things to keep in mind - I do say the incorrect things a couple of times. I'm aware that the frequency of one sound was not 12,000khz (it was 12 khz). Feel free to point out other flaws, of which there may be many."
