This one was sent in via John L Rice. One more below. "I've always wanted to do this one since I was young. I blame the Exploratorium commercials during Captain Cosmic on KTVU with Wendy Carlos music. Now that I'm stuck at home, here goes. One of my favorite Bach pieces, almost impossible to play live and just as difficult to mix. Keep creating people!

Details for the eurorack nerds out there ... I pulled out Yarns for this one, but even with the two A4 CV outs, I was only able to do 6 parts. Cello is Klavis and the sub going through Evolution with a touch of distortion so it pops, Viola is Klavis through a Wasp with heavy S/H on the cutoff. Lead violin is the E352 going through an SEM (very Depeche Mode sounding) with the remaining violin parts coming from Chord2 in poly mode going through Belgrad with just enough input clipping that it sounds like a harpsichord at times. Listen to it on real speakers, the voicing really comes together in the third movement. And yes, I added a kick to the first movement, it just seems to work for me.

Lesson learned is how powerful ADSR's are (thanks Peaks x2) instead of just AR's on the Quadra. Recorded the individual tracks on a Zoom L-20, then fine-tuned the mix in Reaper. It's got the right level of rumble to my ears, but I wish I was better at EQ'ing and mastering."

AJH Patch of The Week: Mini Mod & Muting Mixer Melodic Performance (with patch sheet for Eurorack)

"A re-recording of an old performance/composition using the AJH Synth Mini Mod system with the new MUTING MIXER & VCA module. This module allows input sources to be punched in and out quickly, ideal for live performance. Here I'm using one before the VCF to mix 5 waveforms from 3 VCOs, and also using another one as my final VCA after the filter. Patch sheet at the end of the video.

Patch Notes:
Green dots show approximate pot and switch positions. Where a pot or switch has two dots, this illustrates the range I move them during the video. Pots and switches that do not have green dots are not used in this patch, and should be left at their zero or off positions.
In the video I'm using the Glide + Noise MkII module to access the CV bus, allowing me to control multiple VCOs from one input/cable, otherwise you will need to use a multiple or stacking cables to connect the keyboard/sequencer to all 3 VCOs, as is usual with a fully modular synth.
VCOs: Tune them to the same pitch, only octaves are different. PWM SHAPE can be experimented with, setting all 3 VCOs to the same or different settings effects the sound of the combined pulse waves subtly.
Muting Mixer: These settings allow me to switch O/DR (overdrive) on and off without driving the signal too high, and keeping both states at a comparable level. Notice I always un-mute either the pulse waves (channels 2 & 3) OR the sawtooth waves (4 & 5) of VCO 2 & 3, never both pairs at the same time, as their combined signal would significantly increase the input level and risk unwanted clipping distortion. I tweak the level of VCO 1 (channel 1) to drive the signal a little more, but however you use it try to keep the level meter in the GREEN.
VCA: In the video I use another Muting Mixer as final output VCA, so in the diagram I show the Discrete VCA being used for the benefit of those who have one, but the same principle applies - set master to full then gradually increase the input level.
Modules used from top-left to bottom-right: Glide + Noise (for bus board access - optional), Vintage Transistor Core VCO x3, Muting Mixer, Transistor Ladder Filter, Contour Generators, Discrete Cascaded VCA (or Muting Mixer)."

"Lately I have been experimenting with the really beautiful but unusual 'organismic synthesizer', the Lyra-8. It's the kind of machine that feels like you can coax it to life... if you just spend enough time on it. Here is a full recording of one of my first sessions exploring its sounds, with a touch of the Roland RE-101 Space Echo for good measure. The video is fairly unpolished, to give you an idea of what it's like to sit and play with the thing for real.

Patchable, squishable noise maker From the basement emerges a prickly friend to drone, squeal, sing, and sputter along with. The box is built on #ciatlonbarde’s Lil Sidrassi and Rollz paper circuits, with a set of switched capacitors that can take you from ultrasonic and sub-bass frequencies with the flick of a switch. Below the switches are the Rollz, rhythmic drivers that send electric impulses to the Lil Sid. When connected to the Rollz, the Sid’s five oscillators can respond regularly - giving you techno textures - or chaotic - producing ultrasonic guinea pig battle cries.

9V Center Negative, includes a banana ground for connecting with other noisy friends.
Note: The only patch points that can be connected (after grounding) to other similar gear are the red ones, otherwise you may damage your gear!! Negative voltages are no joke!
