The Buchla Music Easel II from 2006

The 2006 Buchla Music Easel II that never was.

Today is Don Buchla's birthday. He was born on April 17, 1937, which would have made him 85. He passed away five years ago on September 14, 2016.

via @shastacults

"I was planning to save this until i got some more info from the parties directly involved but the Behringer announcement yesterday [posted here] kinda inspired me to just drop this one...

Years ago I sat down with Don to discuss ideas for a new 200e keyboard.. I mentioned that the system needed one, that it was his signature and completed the system... we discussed the merits of capacitance touch plates vs membrane before Don finally settled on membrane (I was pro capacitance). Before I got up I suggested a new Easel would really be the ideal way for people to experience his ideas without being sucked into the modular vortex.

Later while recovering from illness Don began design of the next instrument, one which went though the paces only to be shelved and never seen again.. instead we got low quality reproductions of a 40 year old design (the BEMI Easel) that were rushed into production to beat the inevitable DIY clone which was not so secretly being developed.

Let there be no mistake, Don was not happy about the 208e but slodged through it, making circuit and physical changes against the wishes of his new bosses who wanted an exact copy, something I don't think Don was capable of.. or just didn't want to do cause they told him to, both are possible.
here is the new Easel design which could have been..

Model 209e Matrix Potpourri
Model 222e Multi Dimensional Kinesthetic Input Port
the 209e responded to the lightning rings and was programmed via the 222e keys acting as virtual sliders , 24 stage MARF, Dual Envelopes, Mod and Princ Osc, Morphing Filter, Dual LPG, Random, Programmability... etc

The LEDs animated and depicted offsets and modulation activity, something we got later on the 296e. #buchla"

The same here the Buchla Music Easel II was under consideration.

Ace of Spades on two DB-01 synths

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The Ace of Spades by Motorhead is a classic song with interesting little twists and turns. I especially like the intro and just for fun I tapped out the sequence. One thing led to another and soon I had most of the song. Didn't get as far as the solo since to go that far would really deserve a full multitrack effort. As t is having just two notes leads to some hard choices - especially since the bass by itself plays a lot of power chords!

I would have liked to have shown the sequences as they played through but unfortunately by chaining patterns together you have to stay in pattern mode :(

The track was done in a single take using only what you see here plus a compressor on the lead synth in post just to even things out.

Finally, if you're getting some weird ad on this video it may be because there's a copyright claim from some sausage company that sung over the top of the original Ace of Spades and now claims the melody as theirs ?! Strange days.

MINIDEXED - honey, I shrunk my DX7 collection

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"MINIDEXED is a superb implementation of 8 instances of DEXED, the free DX7 emulator, on a 'bare metal' Raspberry PI. Think of a TX816 in mini format. In this video, I walk through the installation, setup and navigating the menu. Table of contents:

00:00 introduction
01:00 assembling the PI setup (LCD and rotary encoder)
01:32 other hardware needed
02:45 installing and configuring the software
03:30 navigating the menu, setting up a performance
06:34 important considerations
06:54 demo (synthwave... )

Anyone recognize the gear in the third image below?

Update: it appears they are early Wavemakers. And via vco2vcf2vca in the comments: "The white-paneled units look similar to the ones at [link]"

"THE ELECTRONIC ARTS OF LIGHT AND SOUND
By Ronald Pellegrino
1983 First Edition
Rare early book on merging music synthesis with visuals
Near mint condition in plastic booksleeve
About the nicest copy of this book you can find."

The following is a decription for the book from Amazon:

"Sound and light explode, then whisper - partners in an eternal dance. Interwove rhythms burst into vivid images in the and ear. Uproarious hues flash, shimmer, and fade....

And all of this is under your control, thanks to modern electronic wizardry. Sound and light synthesis has coaxed some of man's most visionary images from his imagination, and now Ronald Pellegrino provides you with the tools to make the most of this miracle of technology. In one compact volume he integrates electronic history, theory, composition, and performance techniques. From this foundation you can launch yourself into the boundless realm of the electronic arts.

Pelligrino explains how to tap the creative power of real-time composition, the 'glue' of sound and light synthesis. You'll discover visual music as it is expressed through oscillographics and film, videographics, and laser light forms. Electronic instruments are viewed as both live performance and studio instruments, opening up infinite possibilities.

Wave theory fundamentals - the heart of the electronic arts - initiate a guided tour of the electronic arts studio that shows you how to design your own. Pellegrino describes the instruments you'll find there, shows you how to operate them, and explains their interactions and how to use them to their full potential. He also highlights the computer as an essential component in the system, as a generator and controller of sound and light waves."

"This is a fantastic sounding analog synth, with oscillators, filters and vca’s that are modeled after various vintage ARP circuits. With an additional Steiner Parker filter and a built in distortion circuit, wavefolding, and ample modulation paths, this synth offers a base sound that is grounded in the past but can cover unique unchartered territory."

"As used by Tangerine Dream and Kansas as well as many other artists, including Diane Bish (believe it or not), this one is it!!! If you've looked this item up, you already know what you're buying. I can't say enough about this synthesizer! The digitally controlled analogue sound is sooooo ARP! Adjusting and tweaking the filter and modulation settings, this unit makes most any mono synth sound that you would need! Add a little reverb, delay, etc. and you're really in business! Using the "Tuba" preset for instance, you can modulate the filter ("Brilliance") slider along with up to six after-touch EFX, and you will get a really FAT synthesizer sound. Adjusting the octave switch, gives you a 5 octave range! Please check the photos closely. This beautiful synth has been stored in an air-conditioned studio for more than 40 years now, still works great and stays in tune, spot-on!"

"Legendary, very rare & powerful soviet analog synthesizer "ALTAIR-231". It is a 3-OSC monophonic precise equivalent of infamous western MINIMOOG MODEL D.

Synth has 4-octave keyboard (F-C) with velocity (sensitivity assign to vibrato effect). For live performance there is a wheel which provides pitch shift. ALTAIR-231 is based on 3-VCO (OSC-3 can work as the modulator), 1 VCF (lowpass 24dB/oct) with ADSR, 1 VCA, 3 LFO, noise generator (white/pink), glide, memory. It has an EXTERNAL INPUT allowing to use FILTER and GENERATORS with OTHER INSTRUMENTS such as guitars, synths, etc! ALTAIR-231 consists of 5 main sections - OSC, MIXER, MODULATION, FILTER and AMP."
