Demo & Detail of a Switched Formant Synth Module Made From a 1960s Bell Labs Speech Synthesis Kit

video upload by ParadisoModular

"This video describes and demonstrates a novel synthesizer module I recently designed and built out of a "Speech Synthesis" Kit that was distributed to schools by Bell Labs in the 1960s. After walking through some basic background on the kit and how I adapted it, I demo the kinds of sounds this module makes."

Lofi tech beats PCBcore w/ NUNOMO QUN MKII, TX-6 and pikocore

video upload by Arman Bohn

"Bare PCB devices. The Qun clocks the piko through the rk-006.

The Qun provides a generative bass-scape and I tweak the amount of FM and certain probability ranges. The Qun has been a bit of a mystery … I’m still thinking about making a video where I talk through trying to use it."

A history of synthesizers with Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio | Art Works

video upload by ABC Arts

"Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) holds the largest collection of electronic instruments in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s home to 1400 synthesizers, drum machines and other electronic making equipment.

We zeroed in on two synthesizers in particular, the ARP 2600, which provided the iconic voice of R2-D2 in Star Wars, and the Fairlight CMI, which was made in Australia and changed synthesizer history."

You can find additional posts featuring the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio here.

"A little demo of a the last available Godwin Drummaker 45 for sale - just back from extensive repairs it sounds marvelous!
Some spring reverb and echo from the Solton Cathedral E-2000 unit.
Condition is very good with some oxidation on front panel which tend to happen with these - we put down some anti-oxidation to halt it in its tracks so should not deteriorate further down the line.
The keys of the keyboard have some minor scratches and miss-coloration up close.
We demo the one finger mode towards the end of the video - along with the Orchestral arpeggiator mode - good fun."

"Godwin Drummaker 45 for sale - this is our last available unit - just back from extensive repairs it sounds marvelous!

All wooden details have a fresh new veneer.

The keyboard has a new all-black paint job and a new cable.

I cannot stress enough how damn cool these machines are - check the video demo of this very unit for sale here.

Condition is very good with some oxidation on front panel which tend to happen with these - we put down some anti-oxidation to halt it in its tracks so should not deteriorate further down the line.

The keys of the keyboard have some minor scratches and miss-coloration up close.

220 volt version Power cable (standard) is not included.

Item ships from Italy."

Bugari Sound Unit

via this auction

Note this appears to be the first post to feature Bugari.

Some details from the listing:

"Amazingly rare machine - Most likely this was made by Bugari in Italy in the early 80s or late 70s.

There's no brand logo or serial number number anywhere on the machine so we can't say for sure who made this but it's a professionally, mass produced unit.

It's likely controlled by an external controller such as a foot pedal or accordion.

Lots of sound presets and and what are most likely rhythmic options on the front panel.

The idea would be to build a controller for it but right now there are too many other projects lined up.

It looks almost new inside and out with some light oxidation on the handle on top and metal plate underneath.

It sports 2 hardwired cables : 1 for external controller and 1 for the on board (thank god!) power supply with long cable with regular Italian 3 prong power connector at the end.

220 volt version with EU plug.

Items ship from Italy"

Elka Drummer One - Serviced

"Just back from service - sounding just like it should - please have a look at the video of this very device. Gold metal front frame version.

We’ve had 5 of these now and we’re starting to get a hang of how to get them sounding right.

This one’s has had little use - front panel looks amazing - some smaller, hairpin scratches on metal piece and plastic corners and a few smaller spots on the tolex that might go away with some patience. The feet have been removed - not a bad idea.

These machines are old - 1968-1970 - they don't like other machines or metal surfaces - they start humming immediately - so don't stack them on top of other instruments, amps or any metal / electric current loaded surface."

Farfisa Soundmaker - Serviced SN 6739 / 204

via this auction

"Very fun monophonic and polyphonic string machine combo from Italy up for sale - only selling since we have two.

Great preset sounds on both mono and poly section, love the monophonic filter, lush independent string machine acts as an independent third section, you can route the poly section and string section to the mono section and route an external audio source to the filter section - lots on board ;)

Just back from an extensive service and sounding truly amazing.

It has some scratches and dings, the colours of the preset buttons are a bit faded, the music stand plastic strip that's on top has been broken off at the middle, a small piece of plastic is missing on the front panel and one wooden side has a piece that's been re-done, but overall condition is definitely a strong good - please take a look at the photos.

The after-touch modulation is controlled by a lightbulb inside that worked up until just now but now seems to go out after some time after it’s turned on - we can get that fixed but will cost a bit extra so up to buyer - current price is as-is.

The after touch does not affect the mono filter - could be a calibration or factory issue - we have two units here and none of them lets after touch modulate the filter."

Solina String Ensemble - Serviced SN 0136212 w/ Music Stand

via this auction

"The repair included a re-wiring of the transformer, a recapped power supply, a ton of transistors have been switched out along with the master tone generator - the wooden sides have been repaired and the whole wooden structure has been re-enforced and has a fresh varnish.

Includes original glass music stand and schematics.

This one has seen some action but overall impact is really not bad: some wear and oxidation on the front panel and minor dings on the corners of the wood.

A small piece of the plastic music stand strip is missing and two burn marks on the keys are visible on close inspection.

The glass music stand has a few scratches - mostly smaller ones visible only when held up against a light."

Terra & MIDI | Terra's secondary nature | Embracing the limitations

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"When I started making this video, I assumed Terra could double as a midi controller. It supports three modes that can be summed up as 'keystep', 'controller' and 'MPE'. There's a midi in, but it only supports clock to sync the ARP/LFO. I don't think I'd ever use Terra as a keystep or controller, but MPE sounded interesting. However, the standard implementation doesn't map or translate pressure/velocity so it simply never gets as expressive as a 'real' MPE controller. So I abandoned the video at first and almost deleted my recordings.

The manual describes the midi implementation as a secondary role with Terra first/foremost being a stand alone instrument. It's easy to read as 'we added midi, but it's a bit limited'. So if you're thinking of Terra as part of your midi setup, you may need to review your expectations. 'keystep' mode doesn't use microtonal scales. MPE doesn't do velocity. And controller mode only outputs midi CC messages.

I didn't get it.

But then the words in the manual started to form an image in my head. A spider in a web, where the spider is Terra, and the web is a midi network. When the spider moves, the world responds. It's not designed to be part of a midi setup, it's designed to be in the heart, the center. So I wired it up with this concept in mind, and a new world opened up. It's a wonderful limitation."

Analogue Solutions AMPLE // The BIG REVIEW review and demo

video upload by Starsky Carr

"A full walkthrough off the functions of Analog Solutions AMPLE. Its a 3 oscillator mono synth with its own version of a sequencer ... the PATTERNATOR. Not a knitting obsessed android from the future, but an unique take on an analog sequencer. All tied together with a pin matrix and with some extra control form the interval generator.

If you've ever wondered how you'd use something like this you've come to the right place. I demo the sound engine, how to use the matrix (it's not like a VST!) and put together some idea for the patternator, Snare Drum Noise and the beat pulses.

"Very hard to come by these days. Not getting easier. Only one listed in the USA that I’m aware of. Works like a charm still but for a slightly muffled speaker but let’s face it nobody is using that and instead going line out to an interface and recoding/adding FX. Simply a stunningly awesome vintage analog sound that a repro can‘t come close to nailing."

MiniMod Keyz & 6U Full System - Keyboard Split & Arpeggiator Sequencer mode melodic performance

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Testing the keyboard split and sequencer mode on the Niftykeyz controller as part of the MiniMood complete Eurorack synth system, also controlling a 6U Full System.

Both these systems are based around the 3-VCO MiniMod voice, which is a re-creation of the original R.A Moog version of the Minimoog, so they can sound huge. Both have the Ring SM, allowing a further 2 sub-octaves to be added to the sound, with substantially more mixing capacity, so being able to control both from the same controller provides great scope for performances.

The 6U system is available on a Doepfer vintage-look case (not pictured here - this was a custom build), and all feature the very powerful Gemini 2412 dual, state-variable, voltage-controlled filter based on the VCF from the excellent, vintage Oberheim SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module).

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Roland Jupiter 6 | Industrial ambient exploration

video upload by MIDERA

"I've spent so much effort trying to dislike the Jupiter 6 because I like the Prophet 10 more. I tried figuring out how to do things that I like on the Jupiter 6. I realized that using cross-mod WITH sync, I can better control Oscillator 1 pitch. With just cross-mod, it's almost a worthless utility.

The Jupiter 6 doesn't at all feel equivalent to the Prophet 10, but I guess it's got its own thing going. I think the results end up slightly different than what I would get on the Prophet 10.

Strymon Volante and Eventide Blackhole VST used."
