Final Boss Music // Sinistar // Dave Smith Evolver // Jet Phaser // Electronic Music // Synth Topics

video upload by Saul Stokes - Frequensea

"Escape with Frequensea, the Recurring Livestream from Saul Stokes' Eclectic Electronic Music Studio.

Episode 3

On this episode, Saul Stokes unleashes a live set of final boss inspired electronic music accompanied by widely twisted arcade influenced reactive visuals. Additionally, Stokes discusses his early memories of the game Sinistar, connects it to the the amazing motion arts program called Touch Designer, and talks about the incredible combination of Dave Smith's Evolver and Warm Audio's Jet Phaser.

A final boss in a video game is the ultimate opponent encountered at the end of the game. It represents the peak challenge, typically possessing unique abilities and serving as the climax of the player's journey. Defeating the final boss signifies the successful completion of the game's storyline, testing the player's mastery and providing a sense of accomplishment."

The Buchla Archives & The Garden Weasel

Richard Smith & Ryan Gaston have a launched a new website dedicated to Buchla, aptly named The Buchla Archives.

If you are curious what The Garden Weasel references, see his latest post here.

You'll find images never shared before.

From the home page:

"For years now, I have had what might be described as an unhealthy obsession with the musical instruments produced by the artist Donald Buchla—as well as the mystery that surrounds his designs and the philosophies at work in his obscure musical artifacts. My experience during this time included a decade-long friendship and apprenticeship with Don, in which I was involved in instrument construction, marketing, conceptual design, and the maintenance of both his modern and vintage creations.

The Buchla Archives is the result of over twenty years of work collecting and cataloging everything that I could pertaining to the development of Buchla's unique body of work. Today, the archive includes a significant collection of documentation, ranging from schematics and production files to user manuals, software, photographs, sketches, correspondences, and much more. Additionally, the Buchla Archives collection includes meticulously restored, functional, original examples of nearly every Buchla instrument ever created—in some cases, the only remaining fully functional examples of their kind, altogether.

The Buchla Archives mission is to thoroughly, thoughtfully, and respectfully document and preserve this peculiar piece of music history: the instruments, the documents, their story, and the ideas that led to their creation.

Novation MININOVA/ CLASSIC Synths & Pads

video upload by Arty Party

Interesting use of the Hold buttons as a performance controller starting at :36.

"Novation MININOVA CLASSIC Synths & Pads it's a soundset that includes versatile sounds for different styles like Pop, Soul, R&B, Funk and others. The Mod Wheel adds different characteristics to the sounds, and the Mininova Pads add some effects and different types of LFO vibrato, it is more noticeable in some patches."

Incus Iteritas Alia | An anvil for your modular

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"They did it again. Incus is a new firmware for the Alia platform, which will also be availabe as a dedicated module. The Ataraxic and Cursus can also be installed as new firmwares. However, Incus is something special. It starts where the Basimilus stops, so they complement each other very well. Major differences are in the envelopes, FM engine and creative modulation of something that sounds like an LFO. It will make you kick, hit, strike, rise and fall like never before! Check out POB's walkthrough for detailed information.
Highly recommended as the default firmware if you already own an Alia.

How much drum machine do you need? Perkons vs the LXR-02

video upload by

"To everyone who comments on my videos, sincere thanks. Comments are one of the best things about making videos. If I can use an Australian analogy, my brain is the giant flock of sheep and comments are the cattle dogs barking and nipping to keep me on track. Which is to say that this comparison video of Perkons vs the LXR-02 came from ideas in a comment thread. At first I hesitated since it seemed like an irrelevant and unfair comparison. But the comments reminded me that these are the decisions we face all the time? Will machine X satisfy or should I try for something bigger and better?

As soon as I bought Perkons I sold my old LXR-02 thinking it was redundant. Why would I bother with such a pipsqueak when the Great Blue-Green Master had arrived? But regret soon set in and the LXR-02 returned. Why? Well, that's really the essence of this somewhat chaotic comparison. It's not an analysis of kick and snare drum frequencies, rolloff curves, or about particular waveforms. I'm not trying for lab test answers. This is a collection of critical impressions of both machines, looking at some of the fundamental differences in how they're played and programmed. I hope will be of some use and interest to you.

Gates by Ranzee

"A quick look over the latest album Gates. There's an excerpt from each of the 16 tracks. You can buy a copy via BandCamp here:

https://sinnersmusicuk.bandcamp.com/a...

Or alternatively add it to your favourites on your streaming provider."

"An album with a theme about gates - a double meaning. For those who are knowledgeable in synthesisers, especially the modular type, will be aware of gates. Gates are a control voltage (a pulse of electricity) which is used in synthesiser things - like: clocks, envelopes, sequencers etc. Gates are voltage high or low (a square wave) – hence having an open or closed state. Working with this each track has a themed gate, such as a farm gate or a boom gate. Some gates exist in our daily lives, others are a fantasy. The noon of a gate either stops things from getting in/out or protects the things within. It has a stop/go feature."

Access Virus Ti - "Meditation" Soundset (55 Presets)

video upload by LFOstore

"There are things that do not lose value over the years - gold, platinum, true feelings and the Virus Ti! This synthesizer remains the best virtual analogue device on the market, despite the fact that its release took place more than 15 years ago. For Otto K. Schwarz, this synthesizer has a fateful significance - his career as a sound designer began in 2011, when he started to collaborate with Access Music regarding creating new presets for Virus Ti.

We decided to create a soundbank for your intention to compose harmonizing music, in which imitation of living ethnic instruments, soft and gentle pads, fantastic arpeggios, bright analog leads and even the effects of nature and the environment will be organically intertwined! This soundset is suitable for both studio work and live performances and could be easily added to your synth in a minute using the Total Integration software.

We are happy to share our more than 15+ years of experience with this device. You will receive presets in which every detail is perfected. Each preset is carefully prepared, with modwheel assigned, as well as 3 modulation knobs to customize sounds deeply to the needs of your musical works. Be prepared to the next-level presets!"

Pollard Syndrum Quad - Analog Drum Synthesizer - Pro-Serviced w/Restoration

via Analog U.S Reverb

"This one is in excellent cosmetic condition and working 100%. It has just been serviced and has had some restoration. It is ready to be used and needs nothing! It will come with all four pads and a new cable. Not sold as-is! Shipping to most countries! The shipping price is just an estimate and might be less. If it is less you will be refunded.

*** The photo listed is of another I had sold. Photos of the actual unit will be posted shortly.

Cosmetically- Nothing is ever mint in my opinion and this one is no exception. Please check out the photos. Apart from being cleaned up, the wood sides have been restored and all screws & jack nuts have been replaced. Most of the original slider caps were cracked or missing so they were replaced with ARP Odyssey style caps.

Internally- Besides any repairs, all potentiometers, switches, jacks, and xlr connectors have been cleaned, the sliders have been cleaned & re-lubed, and the power supply has been re-capped. The headphone jacks on these are extremely noisy as they are powered by a pre-amp chip with a very high gain. Because of this, it picks up a lot of cross-talk and noise. Please be aware of this!"

Electronic Music Laboratories EML 500 Electrocomp Synthesizer

via this auction

"What we have today is an EML 500 Synthesizer. In the late seventies, there were a few different US based synthesizers. You all know about Moogs, Arps, EMS, Oberheims and all of the Japanese models, but EML made unique and idiosyncratic designs.

This is their 500 model, designed as a competitor for the Minimoog/Micromoog and the Arp Odyssey. In its case, it didn’t make much a ripple in the pond, but some guys from Akron liked it. Devo had a EML500 in their studio, and that should tell you all you need to know about this guy.

These are extremely rare. It is probably a Good instrument, but for this model, there aren’t a lot of choices."

"This thing is great for dreamy evolving pads, drunk sounding horns, lofi surfing, and 80’s car chases.

The filter is modded to allow free playable control over cutoff and resonance, with a 2 pole/ 4 pole switch installed for more variety.
The chorus has been modded to allow adjustment of the rate, going into audio range for ringmod-like effects, adjustment of depth, and a true mix knob allowing for control between fully dry and fully wet.

There’s an external input, so you can run some audio signals in and override the noise.

The internal battery has been replaced with a battery clip for no-solder battery swaps and a brand new battery has been installed.

All the tact switches have been replaced, so no annoying switch bounces while trying to program a sound.

The instrument is painted to match the green lettering in the programmer menu."

Roland GR-500 Guitar Synthesizer with GS-500 Guitar and 24 pin cable

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Two pics of the of the GR-500 inside below.

""Listed here is the flagship of the legendary pre-MIDI, all analog guitar synthesizer systems; The Roland GR-500 synth and GS-500 guitar.

This listing includes the Roland GS-500 guitar controller, The Roland GR-500 Synth module and a factory 24pin cable.

The GS-500 guitar is in Very Good condiction with all of it's original electronics, including the hexaphonic pickup, synth controls and 24pin connection to the GR-500 synth module. The gutiar hasn't been modified at all (as far as I can tell). The original pickups are intact as are the string isolators which are essential for the mulichannel infinate sustain system to fucntion. There are a few -very- small scrapes and dents as one might expect from a guitar from 1978... but overall it looks like this insturment wasn't used heavily and it looks great.

The GR-500 synth itself has recently been serviced (2023). It just got entirely re-capped (capacitors replaced)s, power supploy serviced, and several of the chips were changed from soldered to socketed.

Almost all of the features of the synth work well. The Guitar, PolyEnseamble and Bass sections work exactly as you'd expect them to. The PolyEnsemble and Bass sections are remarkably cool. Being able to play fully polyphonic chords on an anlog guitar synth is just a beautiful thing.

The Solo Melody section, however, is currently not functioning quite correctly. Right now the pitch of the Solo Melody section does not track the pitch of the guitar correctly, and the amplitude detection in this section doesn't seem to be tracking correclty either. I am not sure what the issue is, but two techs have suggested that this section may just need to be properly calibrated and the instructions for this procedure can be found in the service manual which is readily available. I regret not having the time in my life right now to address this issue as it may be quite minor, but I just can't say what this issue is for sure and I wanted to be totally up front that this issue exists.

So we have this remarkably, unique and rare set of GR-500 and GS-500 where the gutiar is in really nice shape, and the syth has recently been serviced and cleaned, but does have some issues with the Solo Melody section."

Introducing ALM MEGA MILTON - Compact Utilities

video upload by ALM TV

"The 'MEGA MILTON' is a smorgasbord of handy all analog utilities in just 8HP that will greatly extend the functionality of your Eurorack system.

It includes a stereo line input converter for incorporating line level external sources into a Eurorack system, a fixed 4 input mixer with breakout attenuator for combining signals, a gated slew limiter for adding slides to sequences, a sample and hold with analog white noise with a myriad of uses such as generative melodies or producing percussive textures and finally a buffered mult for droop free signal distribution with handy LEDs to monitor.

All sections are normalised to help with typical use cases such as generating random CV from the sample & hold section, a smooth random source from the slew output and breaking out a standalone attenuator from the fourth mixer input.

The 'MEGA MILTON' provides essential classic synthesizer building blocks for patching in any Eurorack system. In this video we take a look at all of its features."

Roland SP404MK2 Selected Ambient Works 89-93 "Mellago"

video upload by Benjamin Brodie

The Roland SP-404MKII Linear Wave Sampler is the most powerful incarnation of Roland's beloved sampling workstation ever devised. Dual headphone outputs streamline collaboration with other musicians, without needing a mixer or separate headphone amplifier to monitor your sampling session. An updated resampling workflow makes it simple to re-record patterns and effects layers; plus, with a generous selection of new effects on top of classic SP effects, the sound design potential is vast. Factor in its OLED screen for visual sample editing, the ability to tap out edit points in real time, pattern sequencing to turn ideas into full performances, and much more, and it's clear the Roland SP-404MKII stands out as a leader among portable sampling workstations.

Here's a first among portable sample workstations: the SP-404MKII is equipped with a USB-C port to connect to your mobile device. You can sample audio from mobile apps, videos you've recorded, or any other audio source from your device. You can also stream audio to your device directly from the SP-404MKII. Finally, the USB port allows you to connect with the SP App on your computer for sample editing and project management.

Effects such as Lo-fi, Cassette Simulation, and Resonator expand your creative potential, and the Mic/Guitar input can tap into Vocoder, Auto-Tune, and Guitar Amp Simulator effects. And thanks to the SP-404MKII's updated resampling workflow, it's faster than ever to process audio through effects and bring the resampled audio into your arrangement.

Gigging electronic musicians who typically juggle two SP sampling workstations will rejoice at the SP-404MKII's new DJ mode. It offers an all-new approach for live performance, allowing you to manipulate and mix two audio files with eight pad controllers per side. Speaking of live performance, the SP-404MKII allows you to chain patterns together manually, save a sequence of patterns chained together for playback, or even link up to four pads to be triggered by a single pad.

• Huge sample storage capability, with 16GB onboard storage and support for 32GB SD cards
• 16 velocity-sensitive, 9-color RGB pads for finger drumming, sample triggering, and launching patterns
• Vibrant OLED screen for visual waveform editing
• Powered by USB-C, mobile battery, 6 AA batteries, or AC adapter (included)
• Can sample from mobile devices via USB-C or even stream audio directly to your device
• Expanded effects including Lo-fi, Cassette Simulation, and Resonator, plus Vocoder, Auto-Tune, and Guitar Amp Simulator via the Mic/Guitar input

• Envelope and pitch shift for shaping samples
• Updated resampling workflow makes it easier to re-record samples through various effects
• Skip Back Sampling captures up to 25 seconds of a performance — never miss a sonic gem just because you didn't hit record
• Adjustable input quantization and shuffle
• Up to 4 pads can be triggered simultaneously with Pad Link
• Roll button for triggering note repeats at speeds of 1/2 beat up to 1/64 beat
• DJ mode allows you to mix and manipulate 2 audio files with 8 controls per side
• BPM can be set per-bank for scripted tempo changes
